February is Quilting Month!
![]() |
We don’t want to go crazy with the analogies, but you know how the little pieces of a quilt come together to create something magical? We’ve been busy with all of the little pieces of Quilting Month and it’s going to be a wonderful month of fun here on the Sew,Mama,Sew! blog. Our resources, articles, inspiration pieces, interviews and projects for the month are sure to appeal to sewists and quilters of all skill and experience levels. It’s Quilting Month because quilting is a part of so many projects we love; the techniques we explore can apply to patchwork in a bag just as well as they can in a quilt (though we guarantee you’ll want to make a quilt by March!). |
You can look forward to:
- FAT QUARTER GIVE-AWAYS! Every Friday we’ll give away two packs of 10 fat quarters from Sew,Mama,Sew! We’ll randomly select the winners from all blog comments in the previous week. The first give-away is next Friday, February 1, so all comments from this point on are eligible for the drawings.
- A Quilt of the Day feature, sharing a huge variety of our favorite quilts.
- A Quilt Block Sew-Along! Every week we’ll share how to create a new quilt block. We can all make one in a big, virtual sewing bee and add our photos to the Quilting Month photo group. We’ll feature your blocks from the group on the blog too, with links back to your blog or photo set. We’ll have lots more information about our sew-along with our first block on February 1st but here’s your sneak peek: lots of 9-Patch variations, Log Cabin & Courthouse Steps and Pinwheel variations!
- Articles, projects, guidance and interviews from some of our favorite quilters including Jennifer from Moving Hands, Denyse Schmidt, Kathy from Pink Chalk Studio, Amy from Happythings and Gina from QuiltersBuzz and Threaded Pear!
- Top ten quilting books, batting resources, binding resources, information on quilting your pieced work, handstitching help and much, much more…
We can’t wait! If you’d like to help spread the word, feel free to use the button above (http://www.sewmamasew.com/media/blog/quiltingmonth.jpg) and link back to this post.

I’m really excited about quilt month. I’m fairly new to quilting, and I know that all of the posts will be tremendously helpful to me. Keep up the good work!
that sounds fabulous. I can’t think of anything more exciting than quilting month!
I’m looking forward to all the ‘new’ ideas that you and your special guests will have. Quilt block sew along sounds fun… it’s always great to see other peoples’ color choices for the same block.
This is so exciting! I have about 10 little quilts to make from fat quarters and I was thinking February would be a good month to those done. Now I’ll have some one else to play with too! Thanks for all the inspiration!
Yeah!!!! I’m looking forward to February now. I’m glad we get a bonus day this year!
Looking forward to the handstitching help – I can use some refreshers in that area.
This is the perfect reason to start my first quilt. I can’t wait to see what everyone is working on!
I. can’t. wait. for quilt month to begin!!!
I’m looking forward to this! I have a quilt in mind so maybe this is just the motivation I need.
I have come full circle. I am a quilter who has been inspired to do some craft sewing because of your site. I have made some really fun and adorable projects that I found on SMS. Now I am excited to quilt again!
I’m looking forward to increasing my repertoire of quilt blocks- I’m just barely getting started and have only really worked with squares and rectangles. Still feeling intimidated by triangles! Can’t wait for the tutorials!
I’m so glad you’re doing this!
I have been saving some old t-shirts that my son has outgrown with his favorite thing in the world on them – cars. I want to make them into a big cozy quilt for him to have and snuggle up with. I have never made a quilt, so I am looking to Sew, Mama, Sew for lots of tips, tricks, ideas and inspiration! Can’t wait to see what you have in store for us!
Ooh, I love the idea of a quilt block sew-along! Thanks for including that.
That sounds a lot of fun! I love your commitment towards the crafty community!
This should be inspiration to finally finish the quilt I started in the fall of 1998! We’ll see!
I am so excited – I signed up for a FAIRY QUILTS swap on Swap Bot. It’s in March but I’m sure I’ll have it done by the end of February. http://www.swap-bot.com/swap/show/10039
I’m so excited! I think I’ll make February Quilting Month at my house, too.
I cannot wait!! I just “found” the art of quilting this summer and am looking forward to more patterns and more tips and hints!
This is great! I need a little inspiration thats fresh and new. Sometimes looking at all the old stuff I have makes me tired. This is exactly what I need! Thank you.
Quilting month? I LOVE it! Can’t wait to get started with you . . .
Oh, I love the idea of the quilt block sew along. I’m teaching photo editing classes the next couple months. So I’ll be a bit behind, but I think I want to try the sew along.
I love this site! I get so much inspiration from your posts. I’m a novice quilter so I’m looking forward to getting a whole month of quilting ideas
Oh my, I’m salivating at the thought of all of this inspiration! it’s going to be so hard to hard for it all to start!
Oh Groovy! A quilt block sew along!!!
ooooh!
That’s exciting! I just made my first quilt, so this is great timing!
My grandmother used to handquilt and those are my favorite quilts I own, I’d love to get some advice on handquilting.
I’m an avid quilter! I’ve been waiting for February! Of course, being a textile artist, most of my quilts are rather non-traditional and hang on the wall. But I still use traditional techniques to make them.
I can’t wait!
This is going to be fun – my rotary cutter and rulers are ready and waiting!
Quilting is my new obsession so I couldn’t be happier with all the info you’ll be giving us through the next month!! Thanks!!
Wow, just found this blog! Thanks for the inspiration to be active and sew, not just look at other great projects and wish “if only I had the time…” This helps me to find the time!

I love quilting, but I’ve yet to finish my first project!
I’m so excited about reading your tips this month.

Cant wait!! I am actually getting ready to tackle the baby’s bedding and that will include her quilt. I have all the pieces cut just waiting on the cotton prewound bobbins as I usually use poly with my diaper business.
Yay! I just happen to be making two quilts right now, so this inspiration is coming at a good time!
Woo hoo! Looking forward to lots of quilty goodness.
exciting stuff!
I haven’t delved into the world of quilting yet, but I’ve been wanting to. Sounds like February will be the month for me.
So EXCITING!

A theme after my own heart! I cannot wait to see what wonderful things you have in store for us. Thank you for all the great information!
I have an obsessive compulsive quilting disorder….Must……quilt…..everything!!
I’m starting my first quilt right now and I’m honestly pushing it back a little bit even though I’m so excited to jump in just because I can’t wait to get the tips for Quilting Month. I could have used your advice on batting yesterday when I sat at the store for 30 minutes going back and forth and feeling every kind of batting! It was on sale so I had to make a decision, and I think I’m happy with the one I choose…
Can’t wait for all the fun!
how cool and exciting!!
Sounds like a lot of fun! Woohoo! Bring on quilting.
I’ve been looking forward to this ever since you announced it. We quilters can never have too many tips and patterns. *S*

yay! Happy Quilting Month!
eeeee! this is going to be fun
Wow – you have been busy getting ready for Quilting Month – I’m looking forward to it!
Quilters are good people – that’s my new motto after a perfect stranger drove me across town and back after I locked my keys in my car in the fabric store parking lot a few weekends ago. I only hope my friend and I paid her back by helping her match some fabrics for a quilt she was working on.
this sounds like fun!
I *heart* quilting. I can’t wait to see what’s in store for February.
Oh wonderful! That is just the inspiration I’ve been needing to get to work on a quilt for my baby-to-be! I adore this site!

Been wanting to learn more about quilting – just did my first patchwork this winter, thanks to the tutorial you posted from Amy at happy things. can’t wait!
Exciting and motivating, can’t wait!
I am not a quilter. I would like to be, but have not felt the confidence to take that first step. I want to make a quilt for my husband, but every time I try to start I chicken out. I hope there is some good information for beginners during quilting month.
Looking forward to quilting month!
So I said I was taking a break from quilting…maybe not.
This sounds like way too much fun.

How delightful!!
Cool! I’ve never quilted before but I think I might have to start! I want some fat quarters too!
Perfect! I’m totally buried with quilting projects right now, so I’m looking forward to resources as well as the interviews and patterns.
I’ve always been a bit daunted by the idea of quilting – this may be the spur I need to finally have a go. It would be so satisfying to create your own quilt from scratch. I’m really looking forward to the next month of inspiration and ideas!
I can’t wait!
Perfect timing as I was planning to start my first quilt.
My To Find… Quilting Book List has grown like topsy & How many sleeps till Quilting Month did you say ? Sew Much Fun & Anticipation…
I can’t wait!!! I’ll have the quilting bug, for sure.

I am inspired now…what a great month to start a quilting project since Feb can be quite cold and dreary in Ohio…I hope you will have some good tips for those of us new to sewing and quilting!
Love the site and the fabric I have bought recently has been just perfect.

Vbg,
LouAnne
novice quilter here so I am super excited for this up coming month!
Hmmm… I think this sounds like a good time to finally learn how to quilt. What an exciting month February will be.
This is great. It only took me 8 years to finish the twin size quilt I started for my daughter while I was pregnant, now it’s time to begin again. Something small this time.
I haven’t made a full-sized quilt, but I have made some interesting smaller quilted items. I’m interested to see what tidbits and advice you pull together for us!
Looking forward to some fresh inspiration! Thanks!
Sounds like just what we need to get rid of the winter blah’s!!!!!!
I can’t wait!!!
woohoo! I live to quilt!!!!
This is great! I made my first baby quilt 2 days ago, and I want to make a real one! This will be a great learning tool for me! Thanks!!! Kris
This sounds like fun!!
I’m looking forward to reading about quilting!
I keep telling myself that I’m not a quilter – but more and more patchwork becomes part of my work. Just ‘coz I’m not making bed quilts doesn’t mean I’m not doing quilt-like things. So I’ll call myself a reluctant quilter – always towards the non-traditional end of things!!
I can hardly wait. The Quilt Block Sew Along sounds fabulous!
Fat Quarters…Quilt month…looks like the beginnings of a new project on a project rotation list! But who can resist the look and feel of new fabric or the lure of starting something new?
I am so excited!!!! Seriously, I wish you could see my face right now. I started quilting last spring and have since made one project. I can’t wait to see the quilt blocks. I want to make a quilt for my queen size bed. Feburary can not get here fast enough!!!!
I’m looking forward to learning more about quilting!!
This is going to be a blast! I can’t wait for February to start!
Quilting – stitches for the soul! I can’t wait to start!!! Thank you in advance for the inspiration! Susan in SC

I love quilt-a-longs!
YEA!
Can’t wait! What a great month ahead!
I’m so excited for quilting month. I just made my first baby quilt ever. I realize it was nothing like the stuff you guys put up here but for me cutting those six inch squares out of the minky fabric was scary stuff. It turned out great though and I’m excited to try something new.
Quilting month sounds like so much fun! I can’t wait to make some blocks along with everyone. I usually hate dreary ol’ February–this is sure to brighten up the month.
Quilting in my favorite month…and my B’Day month too!!!
This looks like it will be a lot of fun.. Let’s get sewing !!

my fingers get impatient, sounds great
How fun! I have added your blog to my list of daily reads so I don’t miss anything
Hooray! I’m new to the quilting scene…can’t wait!
After the excitement with the handmade holidays tutorials and posts, this looks so exciting. I’ve missed finding something new on your blog each day in January (although I realized that the novelty would wear off if it was all the time).
I have never quilted before. This really inspires me to try something new and different. Thank you, thank you, thank you. Come on February, momma needs a new blanket!
I just picked out my fabric and I am excited to get started on my first quilt.
How fun! This is an awesome site! I just came across a disappearing 9 patch tutorial that I wanted to try. Thanks for reminding me that February was quilting month!

I can’t wait to see what you have in store!
Can’t wait to see some great ideas and get to work!
this sounds like much fun. i can’t wait to read about all the quilt stuff. shall get needles and scissors ready…
Yay! I got into a wee bit of quilting when I was in high school, by way of my mom’s new hobby. She has since made millions of quilts, I have made very few. I am looking forward to seeing NEW ways to present old patterns. I love the modern looks these days, so I’m hoping your readers will help kick it up a notch. Of course, I do still love the old fashioned farm looking quilts now and then, but the modern fabric out there…so much fun!
Can’t wait. I’ll be checking back nightly.
I am looking so forward to it!!!!!
I am so psyched for this. Making a quilt is one of my 2008 resolutions, so I’m sure you guys will be filling me up with lots of ideas and inspiration. Fun!
Oh Yay! I am very excited. Thanks!
So glad you picked quilting for Feb! I’m looking forward to it!
Thanks!

Hooray! I’m only 23 and don’t have any friends who quilt, but hopefully I can “meet” fellow quilters here. I have been quilting for years but just finished my first 100% all-on-my-own quilt yesterday. I am on a major craft-high right now!
I am so glad you will be having quilt month. I am looking forward to reading what the writers have to say!

Fun! I need to get my crafting space set up!!! Thanks for always having such great ideas!
Perfect time of the year to “get cozy” with quilt blocks. Thanks for the grand idea!
This sounds fab.
I’ve been wanting to start a quilt.

I’m looking forward to the quilt-along! Your blog and online store are awesome. Keep up the great work.
I love quilting so I’m really looking forward to all the quilt-related entries for February.
How fun! I’m taking my second quilting class this month and I am very excited!
Looking forward to this month!
I’m just returning to sewing after a considerable absence…something like 30 years.
I have a confession to make. I have always associated quilting with old ladies. But now I find I AM an old lady, and much to my surprise, I find that young and old both are doing it.
I don’t know if I have it in me to make a whole quilt, but I’m warming to the idea of sewing little strips of scraps together for gussying up my simple aprons and bags like those I’ve been coveting in the photo pools.
So I’m looking forward to reading all that you’ve put together about quilting and hope to overcome my former bias and try some teeny, tiny patchwork.
Sounds fun! Can’t wait!
I have so many friends and famiy members with little ones on the way, which means plenty of baby quilts to be made. Quilting month comes at a perfect time.
What a fun coincidence! I was declaring February a month of quilting at the same time over on my own blog before finding that you are doing the same. Cool! I can’t wait to see what’s coming in February.
I’m so excited!
What a fun way to celebrate February. I am looking forward to some good reading and inspiration and winning a contest would be icing on the cake!
OooOO I am so excited to learn! I’m new at this whole quilting thing so it is going to be fun!
Ooh, February is the perfect month for quilting.
I will definitely be interested in the Fat Quarter give away because I really do not have enough fabric already no matter what the dh says.
Sounds lovely. I’m always getting great ideas from your site. Thanks for your hard work.
February sounds like a fun month. I’m looking forward to it!
I’m excited about this! i can’t believe I missed it until today, though! I have a quilt in progress and the inkling of a new quilt in my brain. I can’t wait for the quilt block sew-a-longs, I need some new tricks.
I am wicked excited. Your blog is one of several I check out almost daily. After several smaller sewing projects, I’ve finally decided to brave making a quilt! I’m in the process of cutting fabric for my first one. The Future-mother-in-law is a quilting diva and is a great help!!! Thanks to her for getting me hooked on all things fabric!! I’ll be keeping my fingers crossed for some Fat Quarters! Woo woo!
I am so freaking excited for the Quilt Block Sew-Along!!! Well I am excited for all of it actually!
Ditto Ditto Ditto What more can I say? Too right, bonza, grouse and y’ little budie; which all means ‘great’ in Aussie speak.
What a wonderful month coming up again! Thanks for sharing so much creative inspiration.
I’m new to reading blogs and found your blog marked as a favorite on several other blogs. Oh how I love fat quarters!
Well you have done it again! I thought Bag month in August was the ultimate, but quilt month!…that is even better. I am a quilter and a “bag lady” so this is pure bliss. At first I was thinking that having February for quilt month was a little bittersweet, with Feb. being the shortest month of the year, but then I remembered that this is a leap year, so I felt somewhat soothed. I am so looking forward to this and will be spreading the word at our quilt retreat this weekend and our guild meeting next week. Sew Mama Sew!
Hurrah, can’t wait. Enjoyed the Christmas month so much, this will be just as much fun!! What a great idea.
Sounds like lots of fun
Wow, sounds like so much fun, I can’t wait for february!
Perfect timing to get us through the last of the cold and dark wintry weather–thank you!
Great idea for a monthly theme. Actually, I can’t seem to get enough of patchwork lately! I’ll be looking forward to seeing all you come up with to share.
Love a quilt-a-long. The blocks sound fun and I know I’ll learn lots. Count me in!
cool. we’re just finishing a 12 week quilt along with Amanda Jean . It will be awhile before she starts the next one of stars. Giving us time to get these together. Maybe if I use the same fabrics I can use your blocks for a matching wallhanging.
Sheesh! everyone wants in, including me! look at all the comments!
Yay! I am loving my quilting, but really need to build my stash! What a great idea! Em
I am so excited about “quilting month” because I just recently became interested in quilting!
Thanks for the inspiration!

I’m looking forward to Quilting month. I’ve never quilted before and don’t have a clue but I want to learn. I want to make a ribbon quilt for my daughter for graduation next year.
This sounds terrific. I am “sew” excited to begin my first quilt in February!
I’ve been gathering fabric for a quilt for the past year. This will be great inspiration to start designing and making it!
I read your blog everyday. I totally loved the ideas and links you had for the month of december and have made some of the ideas you showed.

I can not wait to start reading the quilting month blogs…
Sounds so fun!
I’m an avid quilter and looking forward to your month of quilting!
Quilting month – yes!!!
just a note: i totally ruined a quilt project yesterday…i’m still new to all of this and i tried something before i really thought it through…so upset, but then i remembered some wise words from my mom about this whole quilting/sewing world that has opened up for me…posted about it on my blog and thought i would share here as well because i see so many comments from first-timers and those that are a little scared to try something so new and so big…”this whole quilting/sewing experience is supposed to be enjoyable and fun! if it’s tearful or a struggle, then that whole purpose is defeated…” everyone, have fun! there are going to be a few mistakes at first, a few crooked cuts, a few seams that don’t line up…but that’s part of the learning process and your new hobby will bring you so much more joy than all the mistakes in the world can take away…=)
There are only 34 minutes left in this day (February 1st) but I am determined after i post this to get on board and quilt everyday! This will be such a motivator—-yeah for SewMamaSew coming up with these mahvuhluss ideas!
looking forward to checking back daily
I am so looking forward to the month of quilting my youngest went off to school this week and after 24 yrs with children at home I need something to fill my days
GREAT news from Sew Mama Sew! I am a new quilter and know I’ll in line to learn so much from this!!! Thanks!
heard about “quilting month” at quilting class last night. i’m finally taking my 1st class, but have been trying quilting off and on for years. maybe with some real instruction i’ll get it right, hee hee! anxious to learn all that you have to teach.
Well, I am a little behind, but looking forward to celebrating quilt month with everyone.
I have been quilting more again this year, than I have in a while and it has been a blast using up my stash.
julie
thanks for the quilting month.
Great month for quilting!
thanks for quilting month – i needed something to jump start me!
Quilting Month has been great. I never really knew much about quilting. My impressions had been that is a very matronly hobby which is not very interesting, and only mildly creative. The county home themes and calico prints all seemed very homely and boring. How wrong was I!!!! Many of the quilts you have shown this month are spectacular and incredibly inspiring. I’ve already read 2 books on quilting since the month began and am about to start my own first quilt.
Thank you for your valuable information.
