Board Member Introduction ~ Beki
![]() |
We learned more about Beki last year in one of a series of interviews about women who create and inspire in their daily lives. We were thrilled this month when Beki agreed to share her fun approach to sewing (not to mention her great ideas!) with us as a Sew,Mama,Sew! board member. Board members join our planning team for four months, lending the blog their expertise and innovation so we can continue to make this one of your favorite places to visit! Our last interview with Beki was in April of 2007 so check out her updates below and visit Beki’s artsy-crafty babe blog and shop for her Fiesta dress, her latest bag designs and much more. Welcome, Beki! |
SMS: How long have you been sewing?
Beki: I guess sewing has always been a part of my life in some form or another. I started sewing things with a needle & thread when I was a child. I learned to sew on a sewing machine at around 11 or 12. When I brought my grandmother’s sewing machine with me to college I had periods where I was really into sewing, then I wouldn’t sew anything for months and months. It wasn’t until about 4-5 years ago that I seriously got into sewing. Now I sew almost every day.
SMS: What do you enjoy about sewing? What are your favorite things to make?
B: I like the process of turning a piece of fabric into something useful. I enjoy making purses and clothing. Home dec projects are my least favorite to make, though I sew all my own curtains & stuff because I can’t bring myself to buy things that I can make!
SMS: How do you find time to fit creativity (sewing and any other creative loves) into your life?
B: I make the time. With my busy schedule I am forced to fit in 10 minute increments here and there. After the kids go to bed is when I get larger chunks of time, if I have the energy. I often trade sleep for crafting time.
SMS: Do you have a favorite sewing tip or skill that’s made things work better for you?
B: I would say that the most useful sewing tip is to use a cutting mat and rotary cutter when you can. Before I started using these, I never had a straight line. Now that I cut my things straighter, everything goes together better. Oh yes, one more thing – trace your sewing patterns! By tracing your patterns, you preserve the original and it gives you the freedom to make changes.

SMS: What’s a favorite thing you’ve made lately? Why?
B: Hmm, this is tough because I make so many things. I’m usually in love with whatever I’m making at the moment…until I move on to something else. At this very moment I’m pretty pleased with the appliquéd t-shirts and onesies I recently made. They’ve sparked my love of appliqué again and my new sewing machine makes it really fun. I’ve been sketching some new designs to make some for my little guy, who is full of requests and is my toughest critic.
SMS: Can you tell us a little more about yourself?
B: I’m a mom of three little ones and I’ve been married for 10 years. I work full time outside the home to pay the bills, but it’s my crafting time that gets me going. When I’m not humming away at my sewing machine, I enjoy hanging out with my family, cooking, eating, gardening, drinking red wine, watching trash reality TV (LOVE Bravo), reading my bazillion magazines, blogging, surfing the internet, and attempting all things crafty – if I’m really lucky, I may fit in some sleeping.

Wow! I’ve been reading your blog for quite some time (over a year!) and really enjoy seeing and reading about your creations. But, here comes the part I’m really wowed about, you work full time outside the home, have three young children and still have time to craft??!! WOW!
I just picked up the little potholder book last week at B&N. Fun to see she contributed to it.
I love her blog!
Awesome! Love your etsy site!
Beki is awesome I have been enjoying her blog for a long time and to boot she almost always replies back to my comments which for a lot of “big” blogs is unheard of now!
Congrats Beki!! You inspire me everyday.
How neat Beki! I’m always checking out the latest creation you’ve whipped up, so I’ll no doubt follow you over here too!

Beki’s blog is fabulous and lots of fun (as is this one!). Love the “Board Member” idea – congratulations SMS and Beki….
Loved your blog. The only question I have is when do you sleep? So many pretty things on you blog.
I’m with other commenters here: I’ve read your blog for a while and had no idea you did all this while working full-time. I’m in awe!
I can’t believe you get all that done while working a full time job. I only have time to craft because I’m home with my daughter. I was amazed and impressed by your list of what you like to do in your free time. Do you ever get to sleep?
Where?
