Summer Sewing ~ Bandana Pants Pattern
Stefani from Blue Yonder makes these fun bandana pants each year for her three boys. While planning for July’s Summer Sewing we remembered her great tutorial from last year and asked her to create a little pattern for us all to enjoy.

You can print Stefani’s PDF Bandana Pant Pattern to place next to your sewing machine as you create this inexpensive, fun project for everyone you know! Stefani notes that the pants are lightweight and breathable; they’re an especially welcome wardrobe addition for little boys used to the popular and heavy cargo-type shorts or “sticky” baseball shorts. Have fun! |
Don’t miss out on Stefani’s Blue Yonder blog where the Texas summer is in full swing, creative solutions abound and moments of childhood are always noted with the best mix of humor and love. You can also find her beautiful photography on Flickr and Six One Way.

Too cute. I love making clothes for children, but have a hard time making things for little boys…these are adorable…thanks for the pattern.
these are great! I am sure little girls will love them also!
This is such a cute pattern, and I can definitely picture the little boys in my life running around in a pair of these! I especially like how the print of the bandana on the sides makes it look like little chaps.
What a great idea – thanks!
These are so cute. I can see them working for both boys and girls.
I love these shorts! My 10yo son wants a pair now! I guess I’ll have to get started.

These are so cute! And fast! My kind of tutorial! thanks!
Very Cute! I’ve made the bandana tops for girls, but hadn’t thought about shorts for boys! Great idea.
Those are so cute and creative; they are perfect for summer.
What is it about bandanas that just look like summer? I was about to make some summer napkins for the many birthday and other parties we wind up having in the summer, but I may have to make some out of bandanas and throw those into the mix.
Where is the best place to buy bandanas? I’ve got to make some.
Those are so cute! Makes me wish I had little kids so I had a reason to make them!
I love these. Thanks for sharing. I hope to make some soon for my 2 year-old!
There is a woman who makes these here by the beach. All the kids near the pier were wearing them on the 4th and it was too cute!
These are totally cute. I can’t wait to try a pair!
These are excellent – what fun! Thanks for the tutorial.
That’s a great pattern. Thanks so much for sharing!
Looks lightweight and comfortable. Too bad they don’t make bigger bandana’s for the rest of us!
Those bandana pants are adorable. I wish someone had shown me how to do that when I had 3 young boys running around here.
These pants are so cute! I’m definitely going to try these.
Adorable – thanks for sharing!
my son lives in these! we love to make each leg a different color!
Cute, cute, cute…..need to find me some of that cool bandana print….
I love this idea! I am going to make some for our kids.
Neat. I just might try this.
Love this tutorial! Especially because it’s colourfull and fancy and for BOYS!
I think they are in need of much more of this!
Love this idea! So simple and so fun.
Bandannas were all the fashion rage when I was a teen – are they back again or hard to find? I have not looked recently.
My son would love these!!
Wow, those are adorable!
Thank you so much for the link to Steffani’s blog. It’s a wonderful new read for me.
We made a pair of these for my daughter, they’re great! So easy to put together.
Thanks for this great pattern/tutorial. Love your blog!
Such a cute idea!
What a fun pattern and idea! I’m sure my son will love them during this hot summer. I’ll have to make them and try them out soon. Thanks for the pattern!
These are adorable. I’m going to make them tonight.
love this simple idea! Thanks for sharing
I’ve made several of these this summer for my 6 year old daughter.
They’re SO cool and comfy! She even sleeps in them! I bought some
floral bandannas at WalMart for 97 cents each. Best part for me?
NO HEMMING! I just use one of the sewn edges as the bottom edge of
the pants. They’re more capri pants than shorts but they’re perfect.
At less than $2 a pair, I can’t beat them!
What a clever idea! Enter me in for FFF
Thanks for the pattern! These look like fun!
Those are really cute! Too bad I don’t have a little one that I can sew some up for.
Very cute shorts, and I agree, a nice change from heavy cargo shorts or the non-breathing athletic shorts!
How fabulous – my daughter will love these! Thanks so much!
Fantastic – simple and effective. My cousin’s boys will love these (you’ve solved my “what to make them for Christmas” problem)
Love these – can’t wait to pick up some bandanas and make them. (Also loved the comment of the bandanas at Wally World for 97 cents!)
These are great. I’m going to get started on a pair right now!
Adorable. And they’re so simple to make. The best type of pattern.
These are too cute! Thanks for the pattern, my son will love them!
I will be trying this one out, for sure!
What cute and easy pants!

Those are wonderful and I wish they made giant bandanas so I could make myself some.
These are great! I’ll have to make some for my little men.
Thanks for this pattern! With our 100+ degree weather, these will be perfect for my 3-year-old to run around in.
I know two little girls that would enjoy some lightweight pants like these. How adorable!
Totally love these! Have spent ages trying to locate bandanas in Scotland but there seems to be a distinct lack of them! Will have to try ebay because the boys have to have these shorts for summer.
Thanks for the link to Blue Yonder. Looks like a fun read! And now I have to explore your shop.
These are too cute and sooo simple…my kind of sewing project!!! I must make some of these right away for my little boy and little girl! For those of you looking for bandana’s, Walmart carries them and so does Hobby Lobby.
cute pattern. It’s hard to find boys clothing patterns out there – it’s nice to see new ideas!
So cute! This made me think about making a bandana skirt for myself…I’ll have to think a little about that one.
I made these a while ago — HI think they were fetured in kids clothing month. We got some COOL bandanas from JoAnn’s – my son LOVES his flame shorts and DD has pink with white floers and they wear them alot! If you have a girl – you can use the Js that are left to make a hair scrunchie!
Very cute idea, thanks!
what a totally fun projecT!
Great idea, I will definitely try this one!
Thanks!!
very cute
what an adorable and super simple pattern! love it!!
how fun! and wal-mart always has all those fun badana prints and patterns – this will be a lot of fun for the summer!
These are too cute!
These are so cute and simple to make! My little ones are definately going to be sporting a few pairs of these! Thanks for sharing with us!
With all the incredible bandanas you can find nowadays you could make a whole summer wardrobe out of these! How cute and easy! Thanks so much!
I love this tutorial! My 5-y-o guy approves, and I’ll start on these as soon as I can!
Thanks so much for sharing this.
What a thrifty fashion statement
I have seen these in the past and love love love them. With all the bandana colors out there why limit them to boys?!!?!?
I was just thinking about making some of these the other day, but couldn’t remember what I’d done with my instructions! Perfect timing…thanks so much!
Too cute! Sent this to a friend who is always looking for projects to do with her grandsons. They can even pick out their own bandanas!
I wish I had this pattern about 12 years ago!
I’ll be making these fairly soon for my godson. too cute!
I can’t wait to try out a pair of these for my daughter! So cute!
Very creative! I love it!
Adorable! Thanks for sharing.
I am going to make these, about 50 pair, so that all my sons nice shorts will last him a couple years. Okay, maybe not 50, but a whole lot!
What a simple pattern and a cute idea! I would make these for my nephews AND nieces.
A cute summer family picture idea: have all the grandkids in my family wearing these with cute white tops and sandals.
It’s official…I need kids of my own.
Oh, I just found this blog. I love all of the tutorials. These pants are so cute, I think I will have to try it out
These are too cute! What a great idea!
Thanks!
Can’t wait to make some of these next summer, when my little guy will be big enough to wear them!
Wow, these are sooooo cute!
I love these little pants. So summery!
Fantastic! Do they come in adult sizes??
It is winter here in Australia so I will be on the lookout for some bandanas so I can get organised for summer! Little kids clothes can be so expensive for the small amount of fabric that is used. Love the hand drawn tutorial too!
Great idea – can’t wait to try them out
so cute! i’d almost love a pair myself!
Such a great idea, adding it to the looooong list of sewing projects in cue.
I found this pattern on BlueYonder several months ago and love it. My daughter now has bandana pants in every possible print.
These are my favorite. I think we need some in a couple of colors. My daughter may need a skirt out of bandanas as well!
My kids can hardly wait until I make this for them. Thanks for sharing a great idea!
I just made these and my son loves them. So comfy and easy to roll up into shorts/3/4 pants or as long pants without being bulky. Great idea!
Sweet
can’t wait to make these for my daughter!
These are so great! Absolutely adorable!
I love this pattern and can’t wait to try it!
Very cute!
Darling! Perfect for our 6 year old daughters western themed b-day next month! thanks
Very cute!
Very easy and it looks too nice!!! Great!
Great pattern. Thank you so much for sharing. I will be making my friend’s daughter these for her birthday…Just the thing.
Thank you so much for such a great easy pattern!!! I havn’t sat down to my sewing machine since highschool and I’ve always had a difficult time reading sewing patterns. I whipped up 2 pairs tonight in no time. Yay!!!
Where do you but 27 x 27 bandanas?
I just made a pair of these for a 2yo little girl. Turned into to cutest little ‘gypsy’/yoga pants. Used bandanas I got when I walk 1/2 marathon for breast cancer. There pink, so perfect.
Made several pairs for my children. A regular sized bandana worked great for my 5 year old and I was able to get larger sized bandanas at a western wear store. Those were perfect for her. Great pattern and super fast!
I finally got around to making these. They are so cute and super easy.
Saw your post through Digg, and I am excited to have found your blog page! Awesome, Cheers
