Summer Sewing Recap & Free Fabric Friday!

There’s still time to take full advantage of the season with July’s Summer Sewing projects! Pack lunch in your fancy picnic basket and toss your picnic blanket and sun shade (made with grommets) in your appliquéd, classic tote. Make sure everyone’s wearing their bandana pants and pool robes as you all plop cushions down next to the kids’ tent (more shade!) for a relaxing afternoon of summer sun. I have been sewing lots of new clothes for my little girl, planning a quilt for her 2nd birthday and doing tons of hand embroidery.
my latest project was embelling flour sack towels with fabric and ric-rac and then a couple of hand-embroidered chickens. Easy and fun!
The Classic Tote tutorial was great. I whipped one up in a couple of hours and plan on making more for Christmas gifts. I also want to try the cushions – the instructions looked very clear. You do a great job getting a variety of projects posted. I check the site almost everyday. Thanks again.
I’m making rompers for my sister. She isn’t going to find out if it’s a boy or a girl, so I’m making her a boy one, a girl one, and two yellow/green ones. Fun! I think I’m going to try one of your appliques on them.
I just started to sew. With the help of my friend, Amy, I’ve made 2 skirts. I’m starting my 3rd and I have the material to make a tote from your site. There’s about 10 things I have on my “To Sew” list but I figure that I better pace myself!

I just finished making some soft toys for my niece for her 1 year birthday. I used one of the tutorials featured in The Ultimate Handmade Holidays last November to make a soft cube and some other shapes. Now I just need to make a little bag or backpack so she can carry around her toys.

mm what have i been sewing,well hubby bought me a serger and i’ve never had/used one before so i’ve been playing around with that.
I made a couple of empire waist tops and …a pair of jeans (which was a first).
I have been sewing my red/white folklore fabrics quilt, which is almost finished now, except for the quilting part. This I will do by hand so should take some time.
I really like some of the projects, so will start on some of them too.

I have recently started sewing. I love your blog and it has given me some great ideas of things I want to start sewing. Right now I’m working on a bag from Amy Butler. I’m having so much fun learning and exploring sewing.
I have been making seasonal table toppers for my sister’s new home. I’ve also discovered hand embroidery and am working on a tooth fairy pillow for my daughter.
I’ve been working on a baby blanket with a big giraffe appliqued on the front. I love all of the ideas posted and can’t wait to get started on some new projects!
These are such great projects – I’ll have to try some of them out – very talented ladies. So far this summer, I’ve made 3 tops for myself and am working on a 4th one. I also tried my hand at placemats & napkins for a swap which was quite fun. We’re trying to use more cloth napkins (3 1/2 weeks now of paper-free napkins – very good) so I need to make some more soon.
I’ve been obsessed with elastic thread smocking. I cannot seem to stop. The totes are on my list, but they may have to wait until Fall
My latest projects have been a few taggie blankets for friend’s newborns. I did buy the bandana’s and just need to find a few minutes to sew up some pants for my son!

I am just starting to sew.. I have been making a few purses/zippered pouches, and I’m taking a class right now to make a pair of pijama pants!
I have conquered my fear of knits and as a result have made two skirts!
making a dress for my daughter. I loved the paper dolls on the oliver and s patterns, so I bought one. now i just have to get it finished.
I’m in the midst of making piping for pillows for my living room. I am using Anna Maria Horner’s “Drawing Room” fabric for them, and making the piping out of black microfiber. I wish someone had warned me at the black fuzz microfiber leaves EVERYWHERE!
I am working on a new set of pillowcases and a couch cover to lighten up our living room – it has been so much fun, picking the fabrics
My latest project was cloth menstrual pads made out of old shirts. Not pretty, but practical.
I just finished a dress! With a zipper! First “real” piece of clothing from a pattern — unfortunately I’m not clever enough yet to do it without a pattern!

I have been and will continue to sew lots and lots of baby quilts for all of the babies that have been arriving.
I’ve been sewing shorts for my boys and I have more shorts and seersucker pj pants cut out on my ironing board to get sewn. I also have a skirt and a dress to make for myself. Now to find more hours in a day to fit it all in!
I just finished helping my daughter sew a pair of pajama shorts. I’m now going to try the picnic blanket. I had to laugh at myself, I thought the “rock pockets” were for children’s treasures as well.
I haven’t been sewing too much. The kids want to play all the time. However, we did buy some curtains at the store and then hemmed them to fit our windows. I hope to get to the wrap skirt from S.E.W. next week. I love reading all the tutorials and hope to use them someday soon.

I’ve been sewing a lot of baby clothes, blankets, booties, etc. for my December baby. It’s so much fun to sew little things for babies! I’m actually making a baby quilt, my first quilt ever. I enjoy every step of it, I hope it will meet my expectations! Handmade items have so much more value to me than anything that I could buy, and I only want what’s best for my little one!

I made messenger bags for my little girlies, starting with the legs of pants that will never fit me again. Way fun!
My most recent project is making two things out of one pretty, vintage, extra-long yellow floral pillowcase: first, a skirt for my daughter that allowed me to keep the scalloped, bias-bound edging, and second, a tote bag that allowed me to use the other half of the pillowcase and not actually sew very much… unfortunately I don’t have pictures yet because I”m not 100% done with the tote, but I plan to finish it soon!
Im JUST brand new to sewing…so nothing yet! but im drooling over fabrics and getting excited over potential projects! LOVE the tote bag…
I’ve been sewing a quilt this week – really simple – took the “Nest” layer cake (10″ blocks) and arranged them – then sewed them all together (well mostly together so far) – it’s nice to be back at the machine; I can’t wait for more.
The classic tote tutorial was perfect! I made mine in just a couple hours and am planning on making some as Christmas gifts. Thanks for sharing that.
Still working on too many things, I think I will focus on a new tote bag and the lining of a knitted bag. One day I might even get them onto myblog
I tried the towel robe tutorial for my little one’s swimming lessons. He is only 19 months so I used a old shrunken towel I had at college and eyeballed it. It was so empowering to do the applique. We did the seahorse on his robe. Best of all he LOVES it! He is so excited to put it on and never takes it off. Thanks for all the tutorials! I am trying things I never would have. Thanks!

I’ve been working on a quilt forever. My poor machine must feel so neglected this summer. But i do have a fall lineup. Got baby ideas in mind just waiting to find out the gender, a baby quilt, fall/winter toddler pajamas, and i really want to do amy butler’s wide legged lounge pants seen all over blogland. Finally got the book from the library, a vintage sheet for fabric, and am ready to give it a go.

I have had a very productive summer of sewing! I made two sets of valances, a tablecloth for the kitchen, a tablecloth for the outdoor patio, two pillowcases, two flower pincushions, a fabric beach ball, and a set of placemats for a swap. I am almost finished with two portable cushions based on your tutorial, which I love!

I’ve actually been working with my 11 and 9 yr old daughters on learning to work the machine. They have been making pillows (what I started with when I was little). My 11 yr old got to learn a little last year, but then had to take over the machine for making scarfs for my head after surgery. They have been enjoying it and are quickly inheriting my addiction to fabric.
I’ve been frantically trying to catch up with a Dear Jane Quilt along. If I had time, I would definitely be sewing an Amy Butler Birdie Bag.

I loved the classic tote tutorial and made one each for my mother and mother-in-law to hold thank you gifts for the baby showers they are hosting. I also used the embroidery tutorial to make an absolutely adorable bib for the baby in honor of my husband – it has a skull on it. It was SO easy and it looks great! Next plan: some flimsy cool tops to cope this summer heat. And some colourfull cushions for the couch!

I made a tote from Irene’s tutorial using Nigella fabric. It makes the perfect beach bag!! It only took about an hour and I get lots of compliments every time I use it!!

I made a birthday banner just in time for my daughter’s first birthday. All the rest of my sewing energy has been spent on baby gifts (blankets, booties, bibs, bags), since it seems like everyone I know is expecting this summer and fall.

I’m planning to use the instructions from the cushion project to help reupholster my sofa! That was the only part that I was hesitant about — the staple gun and fabric fitting I’ve got down — I almost had a professional redo my cushions.

Oy, my latest project…….I just finished up a baby sling, hurridly sewed up some curtains so they could be put on the rod for guests a couple weeks ago (but they need to be taken down and re-sewn because they aren’t very straight), and I’m in the middle of making a little dress for my daughter. This is my first time making children’s clothing but I like it…..less material to mess up with and it goes so much quicker!
My latest project was lining a knit and then felted tote bag! It’s my new knitting bag! I’m still learning, but it even included some pockets on the inside!! No pictures yet though! I need to take some pictures and blog about it!
Love all these summer tutorials! I just finished my first king-sized quilt, for our master bedroom, and am starting a quilted tote to keep for myself. That’s about all I can handle since we’re also replacing our floors right now!!

Oh dear, this has been my summer of sewing! I’ve made a skirt for my niece, a skirt for my daughter, a shirt for me, 7 flannel baby blankets (one currently resides on the lap of my bed/chair bound grandmother), 3 flannel burp cloths, and a few “grandparent” dolls for my daughter (a picture of the dolls can be seen here: http://iwonderwoman.blogspot.com/2008/06/thrifting-and-crafties.html. Oh, and a purse for me. Oh, and I’m learning to embroider- getting a head start on this years’ Christmas gifts!!
This has been the summer of crayon rolls and diaper & wipes case for friends and family….lots of expecting moms and friends with toddlers can do that to you….hopefully there’s a project for me in the form of a cushion or picnic blanket on the up and up!
I have been very busy this summer. My niece wanted to re-do her room. We took a trip to IKEA and got a duvet cover, accessories and extra fabric…then the fun began. We went through my many bins of fabric, gathered all the hot pink, orange and sage green we could and got to business designing. I made pillow cases, a patchwork pillow, curtains, a wall quilt and lined a basket for her. We also did some fun labels with chalkboard fabric to help keep her organized. All in all it was a big job in a short amount of time (she visits fo the summer) but well worth the tears in her eyes when her mom, my sister, put it all together!

As usual, most of my sewing time is filled with making quilts. But I’ve also become completely addicted to the Mail Sack Pattern from Pink Chalk Studios. I suspect my next thing to tackle will be some pillows/cushions (the tut. you gave us is perfect!)/curtain as my sister just bought a new house!

Nothing! I have been busy in the garden and painting the garage. I am slowing starting to get back into sewing 10 minutes each morning. Next up, baby blanket for some friends whose due date is fast approaching.
I have so very many things going and things I want to get going before School starts! How about just 3: 2 more nephew’s quilts, a summer bag, and a wall hanging or pillows from some very rad old pants.
I’m currently sewing some bookmarks for a bookmark swap, turning a pair of pants into a pair of shorts (can’t decide on the length), and some beginning sewing work for my boys.
I check SMS everyday, because I love your projects. This summer I’ve made piles of totes, my first diaper bag, newborn blanket, little girl nightgowns, crocheted one rag rug, and engineered the most absolutely CRAZY Vacation Bible School costumes featuring Giggles Gecko, Christian Caterpillar, and Silly Snail. Fun, fun, fun!

I’ve been making baby quilts. One was very tedious to piece, so the next one has no piecing at all! It’s got a jungle panel on front and a jungley batik on back. Now how to quilt it??? And next I’ll make my son his first “Mama-made” quilt, which is what he calls the blanket I knit for him before he was born. Oh, and a couple of cute little aprons for my 3 year-old twin niece and nephew.
This summer I’ve been working on sewing aprons & reusable coffee cozies. I just got a vintage pattern for making womens panties and I can’t wait to give that a try!

The tutorial on the quilt with the rock pockets was brilliant! Yet another great idea to tuck away for when I have the time!
I have made sundresses for my girls and a vinyl covered tote for the beach vacation that didn’t happen due to Hurricane Dolly. Oh well, the bag works great for the pool and the girls can wear the sundresses anytime. I also made a quick quilt for my new nephew and a few fat quarter tote bags. Many more projects are also still in the works. Too bad I have been too busy sewing to get pics on to my blog!
Not very exciting, but I just whipped up a little felt camera case for my trusty digital camera–I somehow lost the previous (handmade) one in Japan…I hope someone found it and is using it! I love this blog–I feel like a greedy kid in a candy shop: I want to make one of everything!
I just finished making two bags for birthday parties, as well as a doll for my neice’s birthday.

I just finished my second ever baby quilt. It was a marked improvement over my first one. Hooray!
This summer I have been teaching myself how to sew. It’s a lost art and the sound of the scissors against the dining room table remind me of times long past. So, I started by sewing simple beanbags. Then moved on to some felt puppets for my son. Next was a backpack I envisioned for my two year old that I created without a pattern or instructions followed by a tote bag for myself. Now I’m having a ton of fun making crayon wraps for all the kids in the neighborhood. Slowly but surely, this summer has been about filling our home with items created by me with love.
I made a new tote from your tutorial, a dress for my 19 month old, a blanket for a baby shower, and am currently working on a minky backed quilt for my 19 month old.
I’ve been working on a quilt of my son’s design. He’s an art student. Handy with pencil and paper, but not so much with a needle. Will be a wonderful collaborative keepsake for him.

Thinking about adapting the cushion tutorial for a wooden bench cover. Great tutorial! Lots of awesome tutorials-within-a-tutorial. Any thoughts on waterproofing the fabric for outdoors? Basic Scotch Guard, or are there better products?

Ooh! I have been sewing skirts for myself out of thrifted sheets, and tote bags from pillowcases. I am looking forward to the weather cooling a bit, so I will feel even more like playing with fabric!
I whipped up a children’s purse for a birthday present after making a backpack for my little boy with curious george fabric. He’s taken it with us on all our summer adventures. I’ve done a couple quilt blocks and some odd and ends such as clothes repair (not the fun stuff).

What have I been sewing this summer? Dresses for a little girl. She has so many summer ones (although I always see more I’d like to make). I recently came across some cute cordoroy (sp) with little skunks, rabbits and squirrels and decided it was time to begin her fall/winter dresses.

latest project: attempting my first dress with a New Look pattern (6725 – view C) and sadly discovering that I was short about 1/2 inch of fabric for cutting out all the pieces needed (that dang yoke front!!) I blame it all on the irritating tendancy of all fabric I like coming on 54″ bolts. Do I find patterns using 54″ width fabric? Never. So either I or the lady at the fabric store miscalculated for 54″ and I’m stuck for now. Oh well. Maybe some free Friday fabric will make me feel better!! Yay free fabric Fridays!!!

Not much in the way of sewing. I did finish my first quilt down to the binding, which my daughter loves. Last night I basted the layers of my second quilt top and I will begin quilting it tonight. I also finished the Amy Butler Nappy Bag and I’m excited to make another.

Im not a great seamstress… but I recycled some hand towels that weren’t getting used and used them to back some super cute prints I had and made my son a new set of bibs!
With a brand new baby and a jealous toddler, there hasn’t been much time for sewing yet this summer.
Oh well, there’s still August to tackle the list of projects!

Loved the classic tote… after making 3 from home decor fabric, I’m in the midst of making 9 more from 3 clearanced tablecloths (doing them assembly line and only have gussets and straps left for 7 of them). It was fun to make the pockets and straps out of the opposite, coordinating cloth! These turned out so nice each time – I’ll be posting pics of the new 9 on my blog tomorrow. Thanks Irene (and her aunt) for the great tute!! I’m a bit addicted to these totes and find that they can be used for just about anything!
I’ve found that I have quite a bit of time to devote to sewing this summer, which is always wonderful! I’ve made a few purses, a couple of aprons, some apple pincushions that I have for sale on my craft site caitlinscrafts.blogspot.com, and as always, my enormous quilt that I am hand quilting and have been working on for almost two years now. It’s beautiful and always getting closer to being completed. I’ve loved all the tutorials and wonderful ideas that are posted here on Sew, Mama, Sew, and I come to check things out at least once a day, but usually more often than that!
Oh, I am also totally in love with the picnic blanket idea of putting pockets for rocks in the corner and will definitely be including that in pretty much every quilt I ever make from now on!

I’ve made the classic tote, 2 in fact! Next up… 2 quilts for my twin toddler boys using the hungry caterpillar fabrics. The Very Hungry Caterpillar is their favorite book so I’m excited to be able to make them something they can hold, touch and settle in with when they are drifting off to sleep.

I’m planning to make a quilt out of some great Amy Butler fat quarters I bought to commemorate the summer. And my daughter’s birthday (she’s turning 1) is at the end of August so I plan on making her a party dress and a cute birthday crown to celebrate the day. Lots of celebratory sewing for August!

I’ve been making clothes for my little girl and baby presents for my friends having babies this year. You can see a picture of one of the dresses at my blog. I love all the summer sewing projects and have a long list of things I want to do.
I made my 2 year old a cute shirred top just today. And I helped my 8 year old put some pockets into a little bag she sewed a few months back…she wants to be Nancy Drew and so she needed some places to organize her notebook and pens and such.
This summer I made a few drawstring bags, some shorts, and a fleece blanket for a birthday gift. Not as much sewing as I would have liked, but summer does that to you sometimes!

I’m working on a baby quilt for a friend whose baby is going to be 1 year old soon. It will be a small-ish quilt (36 x 42 or so). What have I been sewing this summer?
I think the biggest thing I’ve sewn this summer were throw pillows for my living room. The old ones were hard and uncomfortable and terribly old and worn. I’ve never sewn throw pillows before, so it was a great learning experience — not only were they easy, they are darn cute too with some goldfish fabric I actually bought from you guys a few months ago.

This summer I have been sewing shirts, dresses, and pants for my daughter who will be entering preschool this year. We have had a lot of fun selecting fabrics and trims. We went to the store today to purchase fabric for a picnic blanket!
This summer, I made my daughter a tank and shorts outfit, and an additional tank top. I have plans to make the tote from the summer sewing, and a bedspread for our California King bed. Thanks for all the great summer sewing posts.
I’ve been working on a quilt, but lately I’ve been working on ipod covers and lap top covers made from fabric that I’ve designed using fabric markers and paints…it’s a great creative outlet!

Bags and Quilts! I am busy trying to finish a wedding quilt for my sister-in-law and have had several custom bag orders lately to keep me busy. I am dreaming up a new a-line skirt for myself but I haven’t quite made it that far yet!

my latest project was a new diaper bag made to be carried as a messenger style bag or a backpack, for those times when i need two hands free to wrangle kiddos! i love it!

Thanks for all these links in one place – these projects are wonderful! This summer I’ve been sewing all kinds of things for my baby girl (who will be born in November): curtains, sheets, quilt, crib skirt and laundry bag for the nursery, self-designed diaper bag, plus some clothing. Also some maternity clothes for me!
I have been sewing clothes for my daughter this summer. It put a little dent in the back to school clothing… and it gave me a chance to be creative. You gotta love that!

I who swore I would never get into garment sewing (ha) have been sewing tons of clothes for myself. I’m hooked. It’s so gratifying to have clothes made from fabric I love (and that is way higher quality than most ready to wear stuff) that fit beautifully too.
I’m making wallets right now! and i totally want to venture into bags, but that’s pretty daunting!
I’ve been sewing dresses for my daughter, trying to learn to knit (from a book, and making tons a baby gifts. The summer sewing series has me really excited for the handmade holiday’s. I am already using last years list to get ideas but find myself not wanting to commit because I never know what great ideas are going to be in this years list. How sad is that!

I’m making a fitted tablecloth for the pop-up table in the back of our Element. From fun fabric, & quilted even! My husband thinks I’ve lost it. Oh well….
I’m finally finished with wedding sewing and have started sewing some couch pillows for a customer and friend of mine. After that, I have in the line up to make a shirt for another customer and hem up 2 pairs of her pants and then I’m taking a break from customer work to focus on a new idea I have and prepare for a craft show in November!
I’ve spent the summer gaining new tailoring skills thanks to my Wonderful Sewing Grandma. (It is her official title)
So far we’ve tackled a cute fluttery summer top, we’re just putting the finishing touches onto a pair of city shorts, and next up is something for the Fall (it’s a trench coat!). It’s amazing the things you learn in a few afternoons time (about sewing and about a grandmother).
I am mostly working on sewing things for decorating our new apartment and some clothes for myself this summer… Although my latest project was a little baby blanket for a friend’s baby shower. Now I just need to make some more presents for other friend’s who are pregnant too
I’ve been sewing skirts most of the summer this year. I started a new job and didn’t want to wear pants all the time, so off to the vintage pillowcase section I went! I love them and so does everyone at work. ^-^
Now I’m looking forward to piecing together some cute fall jackets. That grommet tute will really come in handy for some very funky ways to close the jackets.
So far this oh-so busy summer, my only “sewing” project has been to clean out the old closed-in porch dumping ground and turn it in to a Project Room. Should be functional by Tuesday, and the next 2 or 3 weeks are fairly lightly scheduled, so, oh, the sewing I have planned!
I’ve been learning to sew this summer and made a stagecoach roller curtain for my bedroom and a new shower curtain with grommets! the pattern even hangs straight!
My next project is definitely something involving grommets! Yay

I have been making a lot of quilts (in spite of the high temps) this summer to give to women in crisis. I am using fun and bright fabrics that I don’t normally use because they don’t go in my house. I love how needle and thread can expand my world.

Latest project has been a flower girl dress for my daughter for a wedding. It was a bear!!!
My 6 year old has absolutely lived in bandanna pants this summer!
She even sleeps in them since they’re so cool and loose! I’m going to use that
pattern to make some cute and comfy pants for back to school.
Here in Florida we can use all the cool clothing we can get!

my latest sewing project has been a mod-podge of mending and the finishing of things unfinished, like that summer shirt for the baby that won’t fit much longer, pants for boys to wear to church, and the beginnings of a waldorf doll.
I have been making some quilted coasters for both myself and gifts, and my next project is a baby quilt.

Thank you for the Teepee tutorial – I enlarged the pattern and just finished a 5 ft teepee for the birthday of my 5 year old grandson. He loved it! I read SewMamaSew daily and have learned so many things. I just had to say a special thank you for this tutorial.
