Sites we love: True Up
|We’ve been big fans of Kim Kight’s sewing, her personal blog and Kim’s Modern Quilt-Along group for a long time. We were thrilled when she started True Up, a blog dedicated to “all fabric news, all the time.” If you love fabric (and we’re sure you do), you’ll love the site. We recently asked Kim (that’s her with her cute little guy!) a bit more about True Up…|
SMS: What kind of features do you have on True Up, and what do readers seem to really enjoy about your site?
Kim: I write about contemporary and vintage fabric. The blog definitely reflects my own tastes, but I try to expand my and others’ world view. Some regular features have emerged: “The Daily Swatch” features one vintage fabric a day, based on a weekly theme, “Show Us Your Stash” is about people’s collections. I also post sales every Sunday. I hope there’s a little something every day that anyone into sewing, fabric, or design would find interesting or useful.
SMS: Congratulations on your six month “blogiversary!” Can you tell us about how the site has changed over the past six months? Where do you want it to go?
Kim: Thank you! The site has already gone through a redesign and it has slowly become more professional/commercial, which I always intended it to be. I want it to become even more of a hub for people who love to learn about fabric… so look for more guest writers, Q&As, international fabrics, and more garment fabrics… The list goes on and on!
SMS: Why did you start True Up?
Kim: Just a few years ago it was rare to find prints that I liked. Now, between the domestic fabric companies responding to our demographic, the influx of Japanese prints, and the rise of DIY and digital fabric printing, it’s nearly impossible to keep up with everything! That was kind of the initial idea, to be a place where people could keep up-to-date with interesting new fabrics. It was also a challenge to myself to learn more about the making and marketing of various fabrics. There are so many wonderful sewing blogs and on- and offline magazines about sewing already, but I knew there were enough fabric hoarders like me who would enjoy an all-fabric blog.
SMS: Do you have a favorite post/series of posts so far?
I loved my series on linen because I learned so much. My favorite Daily Swatch theme was Pennsylvania Dutch– I’m still crazy about those motifs. And I hope to have more posts like the one on pattern directionality that Michelle Engel Bencsko of Cidada Studio helped me write– Important things to know for the aspiring fabric designer!
SMS: Has True Up given you any inspiration/access/experiences/knowledge you might not have had otherwise?
Kim: Big time! Through True Up I have met some wonderful textile designers, historians, shop owners, collectors, and other people who know far more about fabric and the fabric business than I do. I’m getting an informal education, and I hope the content reflects that.
Kim just returned from her first Quilt Market, and you can vicariously enjoy the experience through her posts this week! Learn more about True Up here, and then have fun exploring the site. We’re excited to see what Kim has in store for us in the next six months and beyond!
