November 19 ~ Gifts for Grandparents
| While many of our other gift lists this month include great tutorials for the grandmas and grandpas in your life, grandparents are extra-special family members; we decided we needed a day (and a bounty of ideas) devoted to perfect gifts for grandparents. What are you giving grandparents this holiday season? (Have you heard about Give-Away Day? Check it out, then come back here!) |

I like the brooch holder idea!
I love the family jewelry! So creative!! I would love to have the book as well! That pin cushion on the cover is to die for!
LOVE the fingerpaint wall art! AWESOME! They are going to love it! THANKS for the amazing ideas! You guys are the best!
Last year I made my grandma an apron. This year I think I’ll make one of those travel tissue holders, and a couple re-usable shopping bags.
Yay for handmade holidays!
Mmmmm, chocolate fruitcake!
And I love the patterns too… and the fabrics… and the tutes… it’s a yummy morning, for sure!
I always have such trouble thinking of things for grandmas – they always say they don’t need anything. Thank you.
I ADORE the silver spoon jewelry… so tempting to buy for myself!
I love those tissue holders, I know some grandmas that would love them.
I made a tissue holder similar to that a long time ago and lost the pattern. And now here it is!!
Hmm…this is all I need to do to enter the contest? Sweet!
Love the holiday ideas. Thanks!
Great ideas today. Thanks so much!
We are already planning canvases for Grandpa, but the foot and handprints are a great idea!
Your ideas this month have been fabulous. Would love that purse pattern!
Everyday I am inspired by the blog. Love it and pass the word along to several people freguently. Thank you to all the crafty women and men that contrbute to this wonderful blog.
My gosh – the great ideas just keep on coming! It’s never ending. Impressive.
This is my first comment, but I’ve been a huge fan of SewMamaSew for so long! I love being inspired by the brilliant creativity featured on the site, and the HandMade Holidays are my favorite!
The spoon bracelet is such a cool idea. When I was a teenager, my mom had my baby spoon made into a ring for me, so I love this idea!
I love the hand print and foot print wall art! Thanks for the link!
love the brooch keeper!
I love these ideas for grandparents. Thanks for the inspiration!
Thanks for making a special day just for grandparents.
The fruitcake actually sounds good!
Yummy!! I think I’m going to try that fruitcake. I love fruitcake and adding chocolate just makes it perfect.
Thanks for this post. I have twins on the way next week and SpoonerZ will be great place to get grandma something for the holidays.
The wall art is so modern but looks so easy to do!
love it all.
The fingerpaint wall art is great, I always wondered how to do that. Please enter me in the drawing for the patterns
OHHH!
I love this post. So many thing I could do to offer my in-laws or my mother on behalf of my son. the Brooch keeper, the eyglass case, or the paintings with the footprints. Just lovely!
For the grandparents that don’t really need (or want) anything, we love giving gifts from Heifer International — you can pay for a flock of chickens (or a goat, or geese, or a water buffalo, or trees, or whatever) to go to a family in need in various parts of the world, and have it be a gift in honor of Grandma and Grandpa.
Love the finger paint wall art. Definitely going to have to do it as a gift!
the footprint/handprint idea is so great…beats the handprinted sweatshirts we used to give to Grandma, but she is still wearing them!
Oh, I love that cupcake! I am making a quilted notebook for my nana, to keep stamps and envelopes and such in.
I love the patterns and the spoon bracelet!!
Thanks for the great ideas
The fingerpaint wall art is a GREAT idea!
I might be making these tissue holders for myself
I’m sure Grandma would love them too!
The brooch keeper is a great idea and will probably help some of the pieces from tarnishing. It’s a simple modified pin cushion envelope. Good thinking!
Another day and more great ideas. Thanks! By the way, I love Lara’s fabric choice today!
Thanks for all the wonderful ideas!
I’m sure my grandparents would love some fingerpaint wall art from my two toddlers–thanks for the idea!
love the grand parent gift ideas, think I’ll be making some shopping bags for christmas this year.
First of all. Yeah…you are back on Bloglines! Love the Giveaway day idea, I’m going to be busy checking out all sorts of new blogs and hopefully getting some stuff together to giveaway!
My friend did those tissue holders for everyone at her wedding. It was so cute!
Thanks for all the great ideas! I might have to try making that eyeglass case.
Those travel tissue holders are so nice!!
I am loving all tutorials and links you are sharing with us for Handmade Holidays 2008! I recently came across Portabellopixies patterns and absolutley love them! They are unique! I love the vibrant fabrics she chooses to sew her patterns.
Keep the Handmade Holidays inspirations coming!
I love the eyeglass case! I think I found what I will give my dad! Thanks so much.
The tissue holder is too cute- and a good idea to help my grandma (who always has those little plastic tissue packs in her purse) get a little more green. And I want to win the Portabello Pixie Sewing Patterns
)
how wonderful. thank you. and the portabellopixie patterns look awesome!
Finger paint wall art is adorable.
You always have the best ideas. I love the brooch keeper.
The cupcake pin cushion is super cute too.
Thanks for all the great Holiday ideas. Keep them coming.
OH MY! Perfect Idea with the fingerpainting art for the grandparents! I think we’ll be doing this!!!
This would be great to add to my growing to-do list.
These are great ideas for grand-parents. I was just thinking about what I could do for my Grandpa who is 95 years old.
I love the finger paint idea so much that I want to have babies just so that I can do the project and give it to my mom as a present!!!
The handprint and footprint wall art are perfect. I’ve been trying to come up with something for grandma from my daughter.
Fabulous link for the personalized jewelry! Thanks!
These are great gifts!!! Love the patterns too!!!!!
I’ve been checking all morning for today’s update and ideas. I love the spoon designs and the wall art idea. Thanks!
I’m liking Lara’s choice!
I love that tissue holder tutorial! I’ll definitely be making one of those, if only so I can have one more opportunity to look at my favorite fabrics!
I love the practicality of the travel tissue holder & reading glasses case. My toddler and I are going to add those to the agenda today and make them for the grandparents in her life! Thanks for offering ideas that are quick to make, but very practical for the receiver. We love giving specialized gifts with the receiver’s needs in consideration. Thanks again!
I love the addition of trim on the tissue holder and that cake looks fabulous!
I really need to make some of those eye glass holders! We are a family full of glasses wearers
I love the fingerpain wall art. I can’t wait to try it!
Nanna is going to love the fingerprint wall hangings! Thanks for the great idea!
Thank you for all inspiration and free patterns.
I would love to get the cupcake pincushion.
Kind regards
Liene
Whoa!
Woke up thinking: I really should see if I can make some cases for my husband’s new eye glasses!
Thanks for all the great ideas and give-aways!
Those eyeglasses cases are really great! Maybe an idea for my kid’s teachers too!
OOoooh first comment? I bet there are others.. haha
I love the fingerpaint wall art! Too cute! And the patterns to win look fun as well!
I keep seeing little tissue holders and I love them every time.
I have a similar tissue holder, and I love it! It’s a great way to use a nice scrap of fabric!
Love the fingerprint wall art & I’ve been looking for an easy eyeglass holder tute! Great stuff!!
I love the fingerprint wall art!!!
The sewing patterns look so fun!
Oh my gosh! the wall art….too cute.
I’m hoping to get some of the tissue covers done for gifts this year – thanks for the link.
Everyone needs an eyeglass case even if its for sunglasses.
Thank you for the host of lovely ideas!
The personalized family jewellery is great and a perfect keepsake. My grandparents love all things edible, so perhaps the chocolate fruitcake would be great for them!
I love the fingerpaint art idea – colorful and meaningful, too.
Great ideas! love the brooch holder. thanks for all the inspiration
I love all this!! Gonna definitely make some eyeglass holders. I know several people that could use them!
The tissue holder is just darling … and the trim really makes it special.
Those are great gifts to make. Thanks for the chance to win the gorgeous patterns!
Grands are so hard to buy for. This is great.
Patterns look wonderful, too.
I love those hand and foot print paintings. Those are great!
The fingerprint wall art is totally cool. The brooch holder gave me an idea. Grandma doesn’t need a brooch holder, but she might really like something to store her jewelry in when she travels. She travels a lot (vacation, and visiting the grandkids) and something to carry her jewelry safely, and be able to use when she reaches her destination would be a good idea. But, what could it be?? Hmm…I will have to consult with Grandpa and ponder this idea.
Thanks for the GP gift ideas.
And, I love all things Sandi Henderson!
Thanks for the prizes this month! They are awesome!
What lovely ideas!I like to make thiings they can use otherwise it gets put away in a drawer forever:)
I love the brooch holder and the wall art that you have featured today. I would love to win those beautiful patterns, also. Thanks.
The fingerprint wall art is an excellent idea. Grandparents always love those personal touches. I just realized I could use the brooch holder for myself. It’s got to be a step up from the shoe box they’re currently hiding. Thank you!
You guys are amazing! Every day I come back here and am just amazed and inspired with all that you have come up with this season! You should be proud of yourselves, these posts have all been really impressive.
Love the wall art!
More great ideas! Thanks!
grandparents can be the hardest to shop for these are really great ideas!
I love the fingerprint and foot print art. I’ll have to do that with the girls.
The tissue holders are cute – I love the trim!
Oh Grandparents! They do deserve extra-special love! And cake, too.
Wow! The cupcake looks good enough to eat
I like the look of that personalized jewelry, thanks for sharing all of these wonderful things!
There’s always an updated picture of the kids. I made a set of picture ornaments for each branch of the family(Child/Spouse and grandkids). I made my dad a log cabin style pillow with the center being his 1944 army picture and the logs being various patriotic fabrics last year.
I’ve just favorited the SpoonerZ store! Thanks for sharing
the finger paint wall art is brilliant! must do this!
I definitely need to make some of those eyeglass cases – and that spoon jewelry is so pretty!
Oh! Those patterns are divine. I would *love* to win them!
The wall art looks FUN! There’s so many great ideas on here.
The Footprint Wall Art reminded my of a rug I did for my dad for Father’s day one year. I got a small carpet rug for him to but at the foot of his chair and I painted my little girls feet and had her step on it. It was really cute and he still has it.
Thanks for sharing the tutorials!
Just made six of those travel tissue holders.I am making a total of 35 for a retirement home that my family visits once a month.I made about 10 last year year and everyone loved them. They are especially nice for the elderly, also great for the purse and car!
Oh I love the bracelet! The brooch holder is a great idea.
I need that brooch keeper. I need so many pins for dance costumes, it would be great to have them all in one place
My mother would love the family jewelry. I love seeing your new ideas every day!
I’m still a little unsure about the difference between “want” and “need”. I’m sure I really need those patterns, but I haven’t figured out how they fit into the categories of food, air, water and shelter.
I love the spoon bracelets!
Love the handprints. Wish I had grandchildren that we could do that with. I will make the tissue holder though. It will make some nice little gifts. Love that pincushion!
oooh I like the brooch keeper a lot – but I think I will make it for myself!
Great ideas again!
Great ideas! Thanks
Handprint and footprint gifts are always a great idea for grandparents – my kids and I are making footprint reindeer stamped on a shirt for Grammie this year.
Yeah! My MIL’s birthday is Friday and I think we have a winner! That fingerpaint wall art looks like something she would love!
Such cute patterns!
Count me in the contest! i would love to win a Portabello Pixie pattern.
oh my gosh…the fingerpaint wall art is so on my list for the grandparents this year!
I love, love, love the fingerpaint wall art!! I will definitely have to make that for my little one’s grandparents soon.

Oh, fun! I want in on this giveaway. I have the claire pattern from portobello pixie and it is awesome.
I love the wall art! I am thinking about doing something similar in ornament form for the grandparents and repeating yearly. But it would also be fun to do that in my daughter’s room
I also love the spoon jewelry!
No only am I finding wonderful gift ideas, but I’m left with lots of inspiration for after Christmas through the winter while we spend lots of time indoors.
I’ve been wondering what to give my parents for the holidays–the children’s art really sparked some ideas! Thanks for all the fun posts!
I love the spoon bracelet and Sandi’s patterns. Count me in for the drawing.
I love the broach keeper. My grandmother will love this!! Thank you!
We are finaly getting all of the families together over thanks giving and going
to get a family potrate made for my parents. They have been asking forever!
I think that those feet and hand prints would be awsome too, maybe I will do
the same as above but leave more space, and add a frame and photo and
a name to each.

Love the spoon jewelry. They have some beautiful things on their web site.
Portabello Pixies are great patterns!! I have a few of them and they just go together so well and are so versatile. I plan on making a few market bags for Christmas gifts.
Love the art work. Personal gifts for the grandparents are always a hit!
I might need to try the fingerpaint wall art, we have a grandparent with a birthday this week!
Thanks.
I love those spoon bracelets! Beatiful and unique!
Spoon jewelry is the best – thanks for passing along the link!
I am loving your Christmas Posts…
I’ve been inspired to try my hand at fruitcake
The chocolate fruitcake sounds wonderful! And the brooch holder is a novel idea. The gramma’s both wear pins often and this will be great to store all those holiday pins as well that we all seem to collect.
I like the fingerpaint wall art.

~
I love that cupcake pincushion! I just finished making my mother-in-law’s gift (so my son’s grandma…)- the crochet hook holder you profiled earlier in the handmade holidays lineup! My own mom (other grandma) is getting a GPS holder. When you have a portable GPS that you put up and take down (and take with you on a trip) it pays to have a soft sleeve for it so you don’t damage the screen. So I made her a cute one- it’s pretty much like making a glasses sleeve… But came out great and she’ll love it! Unfortunately my own (and husband’s) grandparents are already gone, but I figured our moms are our son’s grandparents!
Great ideas. I especially like the tissue holder. How cute!
maybe i’ll get lucky this time:)
The finger paint wall art is the greatest! My kids will love it and so will there grandparents.
The eye glass case would be SOOOOO simple and yet so helpful to those older ones, that have a pair of reading glasses in every room, and every vehicle, and every purse!!!
chocolate fruit cake?! What a great twist on an otherwise not very welcomed food in my family! Every year my mom and i are usually the ones eating the fruitcake delivered by her neighbor because no one else will. But now with chocolate in the mix? i think we’ll get a better reaction.
I’m not a grandma yet but would love that brooch keeper !
Those patterns are fantastic! Enter me please…
Plus the tissue holder would be just the thing for the car.
I’ve been checking every day waiting for the gifts for grandparents day!! And it’s my luck it’s today! I love the purse and would love to make it- for myself and friends!!
I like the kleenex idea. =)
Golly!! Love the ideas, please keep them coming!! I have a ton of gifts to make and would be completely lost if it weren’t for Sew Mama Sew :0) All of the giveaways are such a great added bonus..Ooh, Ooh..Pick Me, Pick Me!!!
Fabulous ideas, as always! thanks!
Thank you for the wonderful ideas! Our Nana is going to be recieving the beaded necklace from a few days back and now I have a gift idea for our Pop-pop- the eye glass holder! Thank you again!
Ooh, that tissue holder would be great for the ol’ man, but I think I need one for myself, too!
the fingerprint wall art is fantastic!
The fingerprint wall art is a perfect gift! Thanks for sharing!
I’m thinking of making my grandma a Melly and Me bag, maybe I should make the tissue holder to go with it!
Omg….I’m LOVING the Portobello Pixie patterns today!!!
love that bracelet! it is so cute.
Looking forward to creating the wall art! Thanks for all your great ideas and sharing.
That’s so funny! I came up with the idea of having my daughter paint canvasses for our living room earlier this fall. It’s fun to see other people appreciate that kid’s art can be really great and worth putting on something a little more durable than paper….now if only I’d used acrylic instead of the tempera we had hangin’ around they’d be even better!
Thanks for more great ideas! This will truly be a “handmade holiday” for us this year, and you are making the planning so much easier.
I love the spoon bracelet. I’ve got a ring made out of a tiny spoon that I got at a market in Portland, OR.
I love the handprints on the wall-art. My kids would have so much fun with that!

I’m finding your blog this month very inspiring! Would love to win one of those fun patterns! Thank you for all the great posts!
I think I could make my mom two or three of the eyeglass cases. They’re a great idea for using her favorite fabrics, and she’s always putting her glasses down and losing them.

i love those hand/footprints! i think i will add that to my ‘for the grandparents’ list, instead of another art-related idea. that is so cute and easy to do. i love the spoon bracelet with the family names, too. i’ll have to check out her site. thanks!

So many wonderful ideas, so very little time. I still have yet to make half the things I found here last year. Thank you for all the fantastic gift ideas and for giving them to us so we have time to make them before the holidays actually hit!
My kids are doing a variation on the wall art for their grandparents- I am planning to embroider their handprints and connect them all together as a long skinny wall quilt. I am hoping my oldest (7.5 year old) can help with at leas this own embroidering and my 5 and 3 year-olds can run the sewing machine pedal- gotta love that variable speed control!!
these are beautiful, creative ideas, as always! i’d like to share a little something my grandma once got for christmas that she loved: my cousin gave her a yearlong present of one handwritten letter per month. she would reply, too. it was a great idea!
The patterns are really cute. It’s fun to find new blogs listed here — saves me the time to find them myself!
Oh, I would love to have that cute purse sewing pattern!

The patterns look wonderful! And the cake, and the eyeglasses case. Thanks!
Awesome gifts!! Everyone needs a tissue holder.

Great ideas! Now I just need to get motivated and make some stuff!
My grandma is getting a quilt this year, my first full size quilt ever. She is in the hospital fighting cancer and could use something warm and full of love to cuddle with. She’ll be okay. Grandma is one tough lady.
I am hosting a give-away at my blog. I am giving away 2 quilted bookmarks to 2 lucky winners. To sign up, I am asking questions about the sewing machines you love and/or hate. I need to buy a new one and would love some reviews. The prizes go out at the end of the month.
Would love to win any of her patterns!
That cupcake pin cushion is so cute. How creative!
The wall art is the best!!! What a great way to add color to an apartment too where you usually can’t paint.
I love the Fingerpaint Wall Art idea!
I think there are several grandparents in this family, who could use new eyeglass covers =)
Sandy’s pin cushion is just too cute!
