Classic Tote Irene from Mushroom Villagers (and our wonderful forum moderator) shared this Classic Tote Tutorial during our month of Summer Sewing this year. It continues to be our very favorite tote tutorial (with french seams and gussets it looks very… professional!). We plan to make a set of several bags for some of our family members this year as they’re perfect for shopping, but also just right for lugging everything else around in your day! |
Don’t miss these related tutorials from the SMS archives: Drawstring Bags (a nice alternative packaging for holiday gifts), Recycled Slippers in our Warm those Toes compilation, Recycled Bath Mat & Rag Rug from For the Home, Tote Bags & Lunch Bags.
Here are just a handful of fabrics we love for some of these projects. Click on the fabric images to visit the Sew,Mama,Sew! shop:

It’s such a great help making this a handmade Christmas. I would have been pressed for time if I had to find all the how-to’s myself! Thank you so much
Nice tutorial for the tote and french seams!Never have tried those but think I will now!
The napkins are really cute. I would love to win those cute patterns.
Love the eco friendly!
Wow, these bags are wonderful!
I love that crochet tote, so eco-friendly. Now if I can just remember to bring them with me to the store. Dang!
That crochet market bag pattern looks great! I have been looking for a pattern.
all three are very good choices. I must also say I have made the tote bag, and yes, it does look very professional, is sturdy, and holds a lot o’ stuff!
i love those napkins!!
Loving the napkin set. Hoping maybe someone will make it for me!
Wish I had some eco-conscious tutorial links to share – I love the idea of sustainable sewing! Your could make your tote bag even more eco-conscious by making it out of recycled materials – I have been saving all of my worn-out clothes which so far have been transformed into a laptop bag, messenger bag, purse and bathroom mat. By leaving out the worn-out sections you would never know they were made from old clothes. In difficult economic times eco-friendly is wallet-friendly too!
Great projects once again!
I love the napkins. So pretty.
I’m so wanting to make some napkins. Now if I can just justify all the fabric they use to make them instead of buying them!
Fab projects. Love those bags. Hmm, never thought a hedgehog would sound appetizing!!
I am so glad to see eco-friendly crafts on the blog, I’d love to see something on recycling fabics and scraps!
Yay more bags!
I might have to try the napkin set.
I think I will make a tote for someone for christmas!

Ohhhh, the Heather Baily patterns are SO cute! Here’s hoping I win something this week!
I just made that napkin set this week for my mom’s birthday! (I should probably comment on Helen’s blog and tell her what a fantastic tutorial it is.) The tote bag is on plan for this afternoon.
The tote bag pattern looks great!
The Market Bag is great!
That basic tote is so nice–the question is, am I brave enough to try it? I’m a beginning sewer–I need to maybe plunge right in! Thanks for all the tutorials this month…they all look fabulous.

The Classic Tote looks like a great patternto make up and have on hand! I love totes, and I can think of people on my gift list who would like them too!
As much as I enjoy the idea of stores selling reusable shopping bags, I would much rather see handmade shopping bags. That is even more eco-friendly! Thank you for bringing attention to the beauty of handmade!
