Hello to everyone at Sew,Mama,Sew! My name is Amber and I’m crazy about kid’s craft. I started the Kids Craft Weekly website and newsletter back in 2006 as an outlet for the insane number of craft ideas going around in my head at any given time. I’m a big believer in *simple* kid’s craft. First and foremost I like craft ideas that have a fun process and that use everyday objects. If the finished product is really cool then that’s great too but I tend to discourage people from focusing too much on the outcome. That’s tricky with gifts of course (!) but I’m convinced that the key to a positive parent/child crafting experience is for everyone to be chilled out – particularly important at this time of year!

For parents – a miniature work of art Child-painted canvases (2) are a great present for proud parents and doting grandparents. Consider purchasing a set of small canvases – one for each child perhaps. When doing this craft with very young kids it’s a good idea to think carefully about which colours you will give them to paint with, and whether you would like to prime the canvas with a different colour before you start. |

For relatives – a colourful framed picture Using this technique (3), kids can transform their favourite artwork into something even more special – perfect to hang on the wall or stick to the fridge! We’ve used rectangular lids but I think these would look great with circular or square lids also. |

For grandparents – a beautiful hand-crafted bowl These translucent paper maché bowls (4) are simple to make and beautiful to look at. Perfect for gifts, you can fill them up with something special or simply give them as is. |

For teachers – a colourful bouquet Show your appreciation with a bouquet of child-made paper flowers (5) and perhaps a gift voucher for a local book shop or department store. |

For children – a teeny bucket of trinkets or treats Children as young as three can help to make these adorable little buckets (6) and then fill them with whatever they fancy – a great gift for their friends! |

For someone special – a treasure made from clay When children work with clay it encourages them to plan and create a permanent object. These custom-created clay treasures make meaningful gifts for the closest friends. When buying clay, make sure you get the kind that hardens with exposure to air rather than the kind that requires baking in a kiln. These kid craft posts are wonderful! Last night our church had a Christmas party and I used craft ideas that I found on the Crafty Crow blog (ice skate ornaments, and the foil tree Christmas cards). I teach little ones, and it’s so refreshing to see projects and ideas that focus on the child’s enjoyment and creativity, rather than the finished product (there are far too many teachers out there obsessed with the idea of their display looking perfect and losing any creative spark in the process, which I find very sad). I love crafting with my kids. My 2.5 year old can do quite a bit now and my 1 year old just started drawing with crayons today! This post is perfect. Cute ideas! We have made the paper mache` bowls before and we made our own paper first. While they were drying we put dried flowers on the outside and they turned out so pretty!

I just recently found your site, and it’s so inspirational. Thank you for taking the time to put this together for us! I am forwarding these Kids Crafts to my Mom for ideas- it’s nice to have something for the kids on Christmas Eve when we’re all cooking. Usually when we have a craft set up, though, all the adults leave their duties and sit to craft with the kids. It makes for a lovely way to spend time together. Thank you!

This would be perfect for my moms group.
These are great gift ideas, love them. Especially the painted canvases. We paint a canvas over a couple of days to stretch out the painting experience and to save paper. My sons love it!
I made those same clay beads in kindergarten and my mom still has the necklace. So cool to see it resurface. Some things are still good ideas years later.

I awoke from a much-needed nap yesterday to find my husband helping my four-year-old daughter paint a child-size canvas. This is a GREAT idea! It was so fun to listen to her describe the monster’s world she was creating!

What wonderful ideas! My little one is just 2 but already loves craft time.
I love crafts that the kids can do as presents for grandparents. What grandparent (aunt, uncle, etc) doesn’t love something made by a little one? A favorite in our house is carpet square with footprint snowmen & puff paint to write “Welcome” complete with lots of snowflakes, puff paint as the eye, nose, mouth on snowmen, and kids names written under their snowman. We do this every few years for grandparents

The paper bowls are great. My son brought home one of these from school last month and it’s still sitting on our living room shelf holding some sea glass treasures from our summer vacation. They are amazingly durable.
