Elizabeth’s Fabric Focus
![]() |
Each month Elizabeth from Oh, Fransson! shares a new project featuring one of our current fabric collections. Elizabeth was a SMS Board Member last spring. In addition to today’s fun, she has a series of excellent, free tutorials and PDF patterns in her Etsy shop. Today’s ponytail scarf project is a free PDF download for you to enjoy. |
From Elizabeth: This month, we’re looking at Woodland Wonderland by Jay McCarroll. These prints featuring little deer, mushrooms, ants and trees are cute without being cutesy. My favorite is Wood Maze, which looks like slices of tree trunks populated by tiny ants. Besides being great for simple accessories, I think these prints would make a really wonderful baby or lap quilt.

I used a fat quarter pack to make some simple ponytail scarves. Despite being bias-cut, these are quite easy to make. They’re also a fun, preppy accessory that’s perfect for Spring and Summer.

Cutting these scarves on the bias makes them hang nicely, and really sets off the prints on the fabric. It also gives the scarves a tiny amount of stretch, which makes it easy to tie them securely around a ponytail.

The tutorial includes a variation for a child-size scarf. If you don’t have enough hair for a ponytail, either size can be a fun embellishment for a bag or purse.

Even though you only need a fat quarter to make this project, you’ll still have some great scraps. I made six scarves and had enough fabric left over to make this little mat, which is a smaller version of Alissa’s sew-along doll quilt.

Thanks!! I was *just* thinking about how to make scarves like these in the car on the way to work today!
The mat is so cute!
What a way to dress up a drab ponytail holder.
Thanks.
Love the scarves and mat, as well as the Woodland Wonderland fabric…
Too cute! Love it!
oh i love the look of these in ponytails!
LOVE the fabric…I wish I had long enough hair for the scarf!
Looks pretty easy. Thanks.
What a cute project for fat quarters! I don’t normally like orange, but am loving the blue and orange fabric in the pics.
really loving this scarf!
i love this. This is something that I think I can do. Thank you so much.
What a great idea! Thanks for all the wonderful ideas and tutorials.
Neat idea! I can see myself making one to ‘match’ my girls’ outfits I’ve made. Or is that geeky? They are only 4 and 6 so they probably won’t think so.
Although I have no need for ponytail scarves, the project is one to keep in the back of my mind. But I do love the table mat you made with the leftovers. The orange adds a sweet bright touch.

I have the deers in green and love them! Wouldn’t be to sad if I get some more green fabric though
A friend of mine, buys all sorts of these! I think now is a perfect opportuntity to make her some and show her how she could save bundles and still look awesome!

My hair just go long enough for a ponytail and it could definitely use some embellishment!
I so need to do this. My hair is always up in a pony-tail, so this will be a great way to make me not look so drab.
I just love the little mushrooms in this line!
I’m sure my princess needs a couple of preppy pony holders
Wow, I didn’t even see the tiny ants on the tree cookies until you mentioned them! So cute!
My girls will absolutely love these, thanks as always, Elizabeth. Your tutorials are *always* so detailed and utterly awesome. This time, I especially liked the “for maximum efficiency” phrase. :0)

These are so cute. I have made pony tail “scrunchies” with my beginning sewing students but these are so much more stylish. Thank you for the great idea!
Cute ponytail scarves and I love the little mat–that would be a good size to practice meandering quilting on.
I love the woodland fabrics, you have a fantastic blog!
My little girls would love these! I’ll have to give it a try.

I love the fabric! And thanks for the great tutorials! My hair isn’t long enough for a ponytail, but I love the idea, and I imagine that if I cut the scarves a tad longer they might work as a headband
Cute. Cute. Cute! Thank you for another wonderful FatQuarter idea…that also gives us scraps to play with.
Those are so cute! I love Jay’s stuff. What a cute way to turn a plain old ponytail into something cheerleader fabulous!
This is a beautiful project. I’ve been thinking about making something like these scarves for awhile, so I’m really happy you posted this project.
SUPER cute! I think I need to make some of these!
So cute!
These are fabulous!
What a great idea! I love this and will definately be making some for gifts.
This fabric is so fun!
How cute and fun for Spring!
For my 8 year old who likes to keep redoing her ponytail, I like to tie these right to the ponytail holder.
I as just in the local Coach store and love the ponytail scarves used for their purses, but at 38-48$ each I was looking for a pattern, when I happened on your website. I went to the local fabric store & purchased $5 worth of fabric and made 3 scarves.. I am sure I will have the best dressed purses!
