Other mats we love. Although there isn’t a tutorial for this exact project, we found tutorials for similar projects and similar techniques here, here and here. Later today we also have a patchwork tutorial for our February Sew-Along that could also double for a perfect floor mat project. Stay tuned!

Oh that floor mat is beautiful. I really need a new one in my bathroom & kitchen. Love the inspiration here.
My bathroom could really use one of these. Fun! Thanks for sharing.
I love the floor mat – how clever! The giveaway is great also!!
This looks like a fun project for a beginner like me.
It definitely would wash up really easy. Can’t wait for the sew along!
Looks great! I need to do this.
I love orange! Tangerine… hot sunset orange, yellow-orange…thanks for the floor mat idea.
Thanks for the great links!!
The floor mat is a really cute idea!! Love it!
This mat would be pretty to put in a guest bathroom. Thanks for sharing!
Great ideas. Thanks once again.
I really like this idea! I think I’m going to need to make one with dark colors that can be easily washable for our front door. An easy fix for wet, snow covered shoes all over our entry floor!
Oh, that’s such a cute idea! I hate buying rugs–they’re so expensive and they never fit the space I’m looking for right! I’ll definitely be making some of these.
I am rediscovering all the things I used to love doing, including sewing & designing, before full-time job + kids redirected my attention. I love your site. The tutorials, ideas and encouragement are just what I need to get back into the swing. Thanks!
Cute! I love the colours in the example!
This is a great way to add a pop of color to a drab entry way – I want to make a bright one right now to make me forget that winter will be lasting for 6 more weeks!
Love the blue/greens…could see this on my floor. Thanks for sharing the project.
How fun is this?!??! Must try it! Thanks !
I like this idea! Good for small spaces, like mine.
This is a great idea! I’m subscribed, so I won’t miss any of February’s Fat Quarters – but this is a great idea. My stash is full of FQ and scraps that just need to be sewn up! Thank you!
Oooh, now I want to make floor mats for my kitchen. It looks like it could also be used as a placemat, if made smaller.
What a great idea! This goes straight to my to do list
I have a couple fat quarter packs (and would love a few more
) that have been waiting for perfect project. I’ve been wanting to try out quilting, I’m thinking about joining the doll quilt sew along! I’m looking forward to seeing all the project ideas this month. Your site is great!
I love that mat! I never would have thought of making that! The colors are GREAT!
Love the bathmat idea! Looking forward to the Sew-along.
oooh this is a great idea!! I am totally making a floor mat for my kitchen!
Thanks!
Rachel

These first few ideas are showing us what an incredible fat quarter month February will be. Thank you!
I love fat quarters. They are such a great way to get some of the “must have” fabric without busting the budget!
I have two handmade mats in my house, and now that I think about it, I could use a lot more! Here’s the ones I am currently using: http://tinyurl.com/dytn6s and http://tinyurl.com/cujf5j. I love the idea of using fat quarters to make mats. Thanks!
What a fun way to add a little color to a room!
Smiles!
What a great I dea!
ooooh…. i like. The sad thing is I know I wouldn’t want anyone to step on my lovely work! It’d drive my husband nuts!
Very bright mat .. beautiful!
I love how washable that looks. I think I have my next project lined up!
I agree with kate, it’s too pretty to walk on!
I love the projects you can make with fat quarters. I also have ben loving orange lately. I made a purse, with some Amy Butler Midwest Modern fabric, which came out great. I should upload the photo….humm. maybe I need to figure out how to do that.
I love your fabric choices, so pretty!
I love it!!! I’m getting a longer list of projects to try!
Fabric floor mats are so intriguing. Thanks for the inspiration.
What a great idea! I’m feeling so inspired to make one for my apartment.
This is a wonderful thing…I have been thinking about a bathroom mat or kitchen mat for a while!!!
Gonna do it!!
I love the mats. My favorite was the bathmat in the “mini bath, mini re-do” Flickr photo.
This looks like lots of fun!!
Pretty! –It’d add a nice handmade touch in my bathroom!
What a stunning design – never mind making it as a floor mat – I could see it as a quilt……..and the colours are divine. Thanks for all the inspiration.
That would be great in my bathroom…both, actually.
Love the FQ projects! I might try a mat… or a pilow…
This is just what I need. I was just thinking I needed a bath mat, but couldn’t find anything that made me happy. Now I know what to do, I have the perfect fabrics too! Thank you.
That is such a beautiful floor mat. Perfect for hardwood floors!
Great idea – I just might have to make one.
Beautiful. Sure beats my ratty old terrycloth-ish thing…
Now thats something I need to make for the kitchen. Thanks for such a great idea.
LOVE that mat!!!
I have never thought about making a floor mat like this. Cute idea.
I don’t know why I have never thought of making a floor mat out of fabric before (as opposed to woven)…. it’s not only obvious, but cute.
Thanks for the idea!
I’m making one of these right now, even as we speak! I’ll post photos soon, and share the link…
A fat quarter pack….how delightful
Awesome! I need a new bathmat! What a great way to affordably bring color into the room!
I really like this idea. I need new floor mats in my bathroom and want one by my bed so my little dog can jump up on the bed and not slide on the hardwood floors. Thanks for the great suggestion.
I love the floor mat! The colors are so calming. I have one of those on my list to make for Christmas 2009. Sew Liberated has a tutorial for one on her site which is simple but fun.
IGreat idea! That mat is way too cute to go in the mud room!!
I love the Montessori by Hand bath mat! I made one for my bathroom, but used leftover pieces from the bathroom curtains instead of making it patchwork and then appliqued daisies on it to match the shower hooks. A very fun project!
I love this idea. Now I need to order a set of fat quarters and make one.
What a great idea! I never would have thought of a floor mat but this is a great way to use some of my stash.
Folks are oh so clever with their fat quarter ideas. This entire series is proving to be very inspiring.
I was just thinking about how I need a new floor mat…another project to add to my list! Thanks for the inspiration!
I enjoyed seeing all the different mats. I love your Blog!
Love the different floor mats. May think of doing that in my bathroom instead of knitting one.
great idea–i need to make some of these–maybe use up some old towels????
That’s so cool, but I think the animals would fight over it – they all love a quilt!
What a great idea!
This would be a good way to experiment with free motion quilting designs. I usually make a 10″ or so square to figure out quilting designs, but if I made a floor mat then I’d be able to use it after instead of just having it as a stitching sample for the project.
This is the perfect inspiration for me, as I am dressing the guest bath…:)
Fat quarters by far are one of my favorite tools to use to make projects, especially because of how they’re cut!
This is a great idea for a collection of handmade batik fat quarters that I purchased while on a trip to Grenada, in the West Indies. Of course, I would be afraid to use as a rug- maybe more or a hanging.
Astounding, really. I was just in the shower and trying to think of something that I could make for a friend of mine and hmmming and hawing, because what I really want to make for her is a quilt of some kind (even though I have never quilted)… And then I scan through my list of blog links and lo and behold! I could do this!
I would love to get a free pack of fat quarters to make a mat! Looks like fun!
I love this blog. I love the ideas. I am just starting out on re-learning how to so and I am so excited. The more I look around, the happier I get – and then I find out you are from Beaverton, too! I think it was meant to be!
*sew* not so…. Sorry, my mind is not working.
I love the colours of that mat.
Ooo, I like this one. It’d be a great way to try out patchwork/piecework without comitting to a full quilt or something. Plus, I need a bathroom mat.
This is a great collection of floor mat ideas. I especially like the jute coffee bag mat!
Ooooh, I love this idea!!! I think I’ll make an even bigger one to go under my coffee table. Thanks for the inspiration!
I love fat quarter friendly projects. A smaller quilted piece means instant satisfaction sooner. Those fabrics used on the post are delightful.
I love the floor mat idea! And, you know, orange is my favorite color….
I think I’ll make a similar sized mat, but then hang it on the wall in the foyer. WIth the first letter of our last name monogrammed in the largest block….awesome. Thanks for the idea….
I really want to make a mat, but my craft list is getting longer by the day with all these great ideas!
Very cute – i’ve been meaning to try this for awhile…..
Gorgeous!
Wow I never thought of a patchwork bath mat. I want to try it. Thanks so much for such a great informative site.
I am really enjoying the fat quarter projects! I wouldn’t want to put this one on the floor for everyone to step on…
I love this idea! Such a great way to add a bit of warmth and color to an apartment bathroom! I see these in my sewing future…I can practice piecing and quilting on something small!
Leelee
Love the color combinations here.
That floormat would definitely make my feet very happy.
Hmm. Have lots of fabric squares and strips already cut. Never thought of a mat before. Nice color arrangement. Thanks for the idea.
This is such a great, useful idea for FQ’s!
I think I need to make one of these for the floor by my kitchen sink! With lots of cushy batting! Maybe then I won’t mind doing dishes quite as much
!
That is beautiful! Thanks for sharing!
My kitchen needs a bit of sprucing up. This would help dramatically! Thanks.
I was looking for a fun project for my girls – this is perfect.
Ooh, a floor mat. Honestly, I had never thought about making one, but I know what I will be doing this afternoon.
