Introduction ~ Emu
From Beth: We were blown away by Emu’s sewing when we ran across her Flickr pages. Look at her “Clothes I Made” set! We’re all lucky because Emu agreed to create a tutorial to help us draft our own spring skirts, complete with ruffles and comfort. Enjoy Emu’s introduction then stay tuned for her free PDF tutorial.
From Emu: Hi, I’m Emu Izaki. I’m originally from Japan, but fell in love with life in New Zealand and have been living here for the last 11 years.
I’m happy to say that I have finally conquered my sewing machine phobia which was with me ever since I sewed my thumb in a home economics class at junior high school (ouch!). Now I enjoy making clothes and bags, especially using vintage fabric (such as linen and tablecloths) and patterns. They are sources of my inspiration, and I love the eco-friendly side of it as well.
I work in an office staring at a computer screen all day long. At home, my sewing passion comes alive in a little sewing room full of fabric, and the end results go to a local shop to be shared with kind people who support and fuel my sewing addiction.
I feel little scared to send my very first tutorial off to the world, but I hope someone out there enjoys it.

Loved looking at all the clothing on flickr- such cute ideas! It is an encouragement to me as my skills are rusty and I’m teaching my four daughters to sew. They will enjoy looking at the clothing as well. Can’t wait to try the skirt pattern!
thanks for posting about emu’s site! her clothes are fantastic and so springy-happy! i have a large stash of fun and happy fabrics waiting for me to sew and this inspires me to get moving on it… leave quilting alone for a bit and make spring wardrobe.
Love her stuff! I found her on Flickr when I was looking for dress inspiration! Lovely things!
Ha! I’ve had her bookmarked for months and think she is a genius. And unlike me, everything she makes looks adorable on her! Great post.
Thanks for the freebie

So nice to see your sewing on flicker! I loved the halter dress for baby/toddler girl, and also loved that you linked to the free pattern you used! (and the many others offered on that site!) Now I just need to beg my Japanese friend to help me translate a bit!
Oh my that’s quite the collection! Great collage! I love that most of the photos were taken with the same background. You have some serious skills!!

Lovely! Makes me wish I was better at sewing clothing.
I was just thinking that making my own clothes isn’t really for me…should just stick with bags, belts, and purses. This may just inspire me to stick with it a bit longer!
Cute clothes. Thanks for sharing!
The polka dot skirt is simply lovely! And at least I’m not the only one who has caught a finger in the sewing machine!
I will pass this pattern on to my daughter. She was wanting a new skirt. Thank you!
Thank you Emu; I like it!

Beautiful designs. I love your style. Thanks for sharing on SMS.
Welcome! You make beautiful clothes!
Beautiful Emu…… I started sewing for the first time last Sept. and in November sewed through my thumb witht he machine. Luckily I’m so obsessed with beautiful fabrics that I still sew…. You have such a beautiful figure for wearing clothes, unfortunately they wouldn’t look so flatering on me…. I sure wish that Rubens had been a clothing designer too. I bet he could paint a mean tutorial if he had been!
Love it!! The styles are so simple, and the fabric is…..WOW!!! Fabulous Emu!
I really like the lounge pants with the ruffle. So cute. I need to try and make myself some clothes again. I have a hard time picking put patterns that work with my body type.

I love the work you’ve done Emu. Sad to say I can’t find the pattern anywhere though. Did I miss it?
