Guest FQ Pack Designer ~ Amy Karol
We’re thrilled to continue our series of Guest Fat Quarter Pack Designers with none other than Amy Karol. What can you say about Amy? She’s like Martha, but she keeps it real. We don’t know what we’d do without a daily dose of great things from Amy’s Angry Chicken blog. We’ve bookmarked recipes, gift ideas, wardrobe inspiration, sewing tips and craft projects. Not to mention the fact that the girl makes her own underwear. Idol.
Amy’s first book, Bend the Rules Sewing, is a must-have for any modern sewist. Full of fun projects and easy instruction, Bend the Rules makes sewing very approachable to people of all skill levels. Her new book, Bend the Rules with Fabric, is now available for pre-order. We’re super excited to try out the fabric stamping, dying, stenciling and screening projects in this book! Visit Amy’s site to learn more about her books, her blog, her art and Tie One On.
Amy lent her love of fabric and fantastic sense of style to this amazing fat quarter pack.
I love fat quarter packs so much. I had always thought of them primarily for quilts, which is why I selected this group to have a variety of scale and color values—but in the last few years I have loved using fat quarters for small simple projects, too. Bibs, bags, zip pouches, doll clothes—that type of thing. I get a thrill seeing all the patterns and colors in a group as opposed to standing alone. It inspires me, even if I don’t use everything I’ve pulled together in a particular project. I really like stretching what matches. I think it makes a project feel fresh and unexpected if it’s slightly off and not perfectly coordinated.
This group is called Summer Picnic. Summer comes late here in Portland, so I’m hoping this will help bring it a bit sooner. The cherries and blue gingham are so picnic-y and the reds and blues are punchy and happy—bring on the sun! I hope you like this group as much as I do. It was so fun putting it together.
And how cute would a picnic set be in these fabrics? A patchwork blanket, napkins, a basket liner. That’s what I would do with this group for sure.
