Board Member Introduction ~ Melissa
|It’s time to welcome a new board to the blog! Today we’re happy to share a little about our new board member, Melissa from tiny happy. Kristin and I have both loved Melissa’s blog and work for years. Melissa imbues her creations with a deep appreciation of the beauty around her. Her sewing and her posts tell stories, of seabirds and willow branches and mother of pearl… We appreciate her travels, we’re mesmerized by the moments she captures and just look at these embroideries! We’re so glad Melissa’s here at Sew,Mama,Sew! to lend a bit of her creative touch to the blog. Enjoy her interview today, and look for more to come.|
SMS: How long have you been sewing?
Melissa: I’ve been sewing since I was a child (my Mum has always done all sorts of fibre crafts and was a patient teacher), but seriously fell in love with all crafts after the birth of my first child six years ago.
SMS: What do you enjoy about sewing? What are your favorite things to make?
Melissa: I love the whole process involved in sewing something- the idea and inspiration, the pattern-making or following, and seeing it all come together in my hands. I’m not so fond of mistakes and unpicking, however. I’m trying to get better at embracing the accidents, though! Probably my absolute favourite thing about sewing is my accompanying fabric obsession. I love collecting it and I think most of what I make is inspired by the fabric I start with.
SMS: How do you find time to fit creativity (sewing and any other creative loves) into your life?
Melissa: I’m often asked that and nearly always reply: I stay up really late at night. I drink black coffee after the children have gone to sleep, and then have about four uninterrupted hours for crafting. It’s probably not that healthy, but it’s what works for me right now. I also squeeze little bits in during the day, whenever I can. And I’ve always got ideas and projects swimming around in my head, so that when I do have a bit of time, I know just what I’m going to do.
SMS: Do you have a favorite sewing tip or skill that’s made things work better for you?
Melissa: It took me a while, but I think something I’ve finally learned to do is match my sewing project to the correct fabric choice. Most of the sewing projects I did when I was young (especially clothing) were rather disappointing and I realise now it’s all about choosing the right fabric weight. Oh, and ironing everything as you go is also very helpful. Ironing is like make-up for your work!
‘pond life’ by Melissa
SMS: What’s a favorite thing you’ve made lately? Why?
Melissa: It was just a small project, but I really enjoyed working on this little embroidery- ‘pond life‘. I’ve been getting a lot of happiness from embroidery lately, and this piece was inspired by a great place we visited in Sweden last summer. So I was thinking about that holiday while I was stitching away.
SMS: Can you tell us a little more about yourself?
Melissa: I’m a 28-year old mother of Arlo (6) and Keira (4) and partner of Tom (a teacher), and we’ve just arrived back home in New Zealand after a year and a half living in Norway. I’ve been writing my blog, tiny happy, for 3 years now and am currently inspired by wildflowers and ferns, all things Scandinavian, and books about the history of textiles.
