Yo-Yo Garland |
“…Back then, even the smallest piece of fabric was precious. Scraps from sewing projects were used to create coverlets and table covers. Even worn out clothing was checked for a usable piece! This is a perfect way to save pieces of a loved one’s clothing and make into a ‘memory quilt’! I can remember looking at my grandmom’s (we called her Babci) yo yo quilt she kept on her porch swing and pick out which pieces came from my clothing! All of my yo yo’s are created the same meticulous way they were back then. With each little stitch, I’m reminded of my Babci and her beautifully handcrafted quilts.”

This is so beautiful! I love the idea of taking snippets of baby clothing to make it.
I just recently started making yo-yos! I love how quickly they work up and how I can revisit the memory of each fabric as it becomes something else. When they are complete, I keep them all in a clear plastic bag and I swear they look like candy in there (all the yummy colors, and the shape is so appealing)! I want to eat one!
What a neat introduction to yo-yo’s for me. I went to the shop and was wowed by all the color combinations.

I’ve never made a yo-yo, but I have a whole pile of circles that my grandmother cut out of clothing and scraps in the sixties – lots of purples and bright polyester fabrics! I might need to learn more about this type of quilt!

I have a yo-yo quilt top made by my great-grandmother, great aunt and their housekeeper. I adore it and think one day will finish it as a quilt!! Plus i started making yo-yos 22 years ago as I made clothes for my baby girl! One day that’ll be a quilt too.

I’ve been making yo-yos for a decorating project and love the idea of a pillow! They are a perfect on-the-go project. I keep a bag of supplies in the car to help fill my *waiting* time!

I love the “memory” aspect of making yo-yos. Saving material from clothing and other cloth things like a favorite tea towel and making them in to yo-yos are great memory triggers.
Wow! That’s a ton of work. I love it! (wish I had that kind of persistence.. probably wouldn’t have 18 different projects in the works in 5 different crafts…)
The garland is beautiful! I love yoyo’s myself. I’ve been making them since my Mom showed me how in 5th grade. I’m working on my 7th coverlet out of yoyo’s right now. It used to take me a really long time to cut everything out and get going until I found Olfa’s circle rotary cutter. That thing is a lifesaver–timewise and for my hands which I’ve had tendinitis in.

Oh, I love these! A friend has a beautiful coverlet made of yo-yos. You’ve given me the idea of making these from some of my mom’s clothing. She passed away in March and this would be a lovely way to hold onto her a little longer . . .

These are absolutely lovely!
I always use up scraps with yo-yo’s. Over the years I have made a bedspread (on a white muslim base), a coverlet (on a pink base), baby coverlets, apron tops, table toppers, dresser scarves, added them to quilts and used in applique and embroidery. The list can go on and on. They make a very interest ing vest and can be used in dresses and blouses. The yo-yo is so very versitile. Everyone thinks you are so artistic to use them. I love yo-yo’s. We had two clowns made out of yo-yo’s growing up and they some of my favorite toys.
I love yo-yos. I actually keep cicrles in ziploc in my sewing to go box for me to have something to do on trips or at dr offices. Love all those yo-yos.

I just recently made around 50 yo-yos. They are addicting to make and I can’t stop. I’m thinking on applying them to my daughter’s head bands, blouses, and to a pair of jeans.

That is beautiful. One of the first things I ever learned to sew at my grandmother’s as a little girl were yoyos. They are still fun and in fact I am about to embellish my daughter’s curtains with some.

I have several sizes of the Clover yo-yo maker and it really makes it easy-peasy.
I am making a garland with large ric-rac, yo-yo’s and buttons for the holidays and
am hoping to be inspired to make a table runner.
