Yo-Yo Garland |
“…Back then, even the smallest piece of fabric was precious. Scraps from sewing projects were used to create coverlets and table covers. Even worn out clothing was checked for a usable piece! This is a perfect way to save pieces of a loved one’s clothing and make into a ‘memory quilt’! I can remember looking at my grandmom’s (we called her Babci) yo yo quilt she kept on her porch swing and pick out which pieces came from my clothing! All of my yo yo’s are created the same meticulous way they were back then. With each little stitch, I’m reminded of my Babci and her beautifully handcrafted quilts.”

This is so beautiful! I love the idea of taking snippets of baby clothing to make it.
I just recently started making yo-yos! I love how quickly they work up and how I can revisit the memory of each fabric as it becomes something else. When they are complete, I keep them all in a clear plastic bag and I swear they look like candy in there (all the yummy colors, and the shape is so appealing)! I want to eat one!
What a neat introduction to yo-yo’s for me. I went to the shop and was wowed by all the color combinations.
Love the range of colors in the picture.
I love yoyos — making them is very relaxing — but I never *do* anything with them!
Cute. I actually made my first yo-yo over the weekend!
Wow, I love the garland – it’s just darling!
Yo Yos are so happy
I’ve never made a yo-yo, but I have a whole pile of circles that my grandmother cut out of clothing and scraps in the sixties – lots of purples and bright polyester fabrics! I might need to learn more about this type of quilt!
Love the garland idea. thanks!
love the yo-yo’s
I am fascinated by yoyos! Gorgeous in a garland like this!
I am reminded that they are actually fun to make too.
I have always loved yo yo’s. They are just a fun, neat piece to look at. I wish I had the patience to make all those little stitiches. Really cute and fun.
Oh thats alot of beautiful yo-yos!! Makes me want to start a yo yo collection!!
I have a yo-yo quilt top made by my great-grandmother, great aunt and their housekeeper. I adore it and think one day will finish it as a quilt!! Plus i started making yo-yos 22 years ago as I made clothes for my baby girl! One day that’ll be a quilt too.
That is really interesting! I guess I’m so new I’ve never seen anything like it before!
I’m a yo-yo lover who dreams of making her own yo-yo coverlet someday!
I might have to start with a pillow, tho, for immediate gratification
Those are so pretty. They would look beautiful on a Christmas tree or as a bedspread. And the tutorial is very helpful.
Oops, the tutorial is on the other yo-yo sewing.
This is a great idea.
How cute! One of these days I’m going to make some yoyos of my own
This is so pretty! I’m definitely going to make one of these garlands someday!
What a fantastic idea.
you just gave me an idea for christmas garland made of yo yos!
LOVE the Yo Yo’s! Have always wanted to make a coverlet for my bed with these…..so pretty yours are!

I started one of these last year for my Christmas tree. I am hoping to add to it this year.
This is so beautiful! And what a great idea to use baby clothes… now finding a part of the outfit that has not been spit up on is the real challenge!
I love yo-yo’s! They are so fun and easy to make, hmmm, I see some of these in my week!!
this is such a beautiful post, and what a creative use of old clothing!!
I want to make a yo yo garland for christmas this year
I’ve been making yo-yos for a decorating project and love the idea of a pillow! They are a perfect on-the-go project. I keep a bag of supplies in the car to help fill my *waiting* time!
I love the idea of a garland made of yo-yos. How lovely and festive. I love making yo-yos they are so fun.
That’s really pretty! I’ve put off making yo-yos because I haven’t really known what I’d do with them. This seems perfect, though. A nice way to spruce up a room!
Would like to learn how to do this to use up some of my scrap stash.
This looks so lovely! I must try making yoyos!
This is so inspiring. Thank you for sharing.
I love the “memory” aspect of making yo-yos. Saving material from clothing and other cloth things like a favorite tea towel and making them in to yo-yos are great memory triggers.
Wow! That’s a ton of work. I love it! (wish I had that kind of persistence.. probably wouldn’t have 18 different projects in the works in 5 different crafts…)
The garland is beautiful! I love yoyo’s myself. I’ve been making them since my Mom showed me how in 5th grade. I’m working on my 7th coverlet out of yoyo’s right now. It used to take me a really long time to cut everything out and get going until I found Olfa’s circle rotary cutter. That thing is a lifesaver–timewise and for my hands which I’ve had tendinitis in.
They’re lovely!
Great story and yo-yos.
That is some yo-yo dedication!
Oh, I love these! A friend has a beautiful coverlet made of yo-yos. You’ve given me the idea of making these from some of my mom’s clothing. She passed away in March and this would be a lovely way to hold onto her a little longer . . .
I just love yo-yo’s. Such a wonderful thing to have fond memories attached to something you love to do…
Very pretty! I have made some yo-yo’s but not a lot. I might have to make some more so I can make a garland like this.
Oh good, good, good. I’m glad you posted on yo-yos. I just picked up a couple of bags of yo-yos at a yard sale!!
I love the garland and all the colors. I would love to have them all over a blanket or basket.
Wonderful. I love the garland too!
I love yoyos! But, I am yoyo challenged as far as sewing them! Guess I’ll just have to buy mine.
Lovely yo-yos! I like to add them to my girls clothes to cover stains or small holes.
wow…this is amazing!
I have to make one of these for the Christmas tree this year!!!
These are absolutely lovely!
I always use up scraps with yo-yo’s. Over the years I have made a bedspread (on a white muslim base), a coverlet (on a pink base), baby coverlets, apron tops, table toppers, dresser scarves, added them to quilts and used in applique and embroidery. The list can go on and on. They make a very interest ing vest and can be used in dresses and blouses. The yo-yo is so very versitile. Everyone thinks you are so artistic to use them. Have never had a bad remark about them and their uses. Thanks for spotlighting them. Sarah e4e
I love yo-yo’s. We had two clowns made out of yo-yo’s growing up and they some of my favorite toys.
I love yo-yos. I actually keep cicrles in ziploc in my sewing to go box for me to have something to do on trips or at dr offices. Love all those yo-yos.
What a great idea to make it into a garland! How wonderful it would look hanging in my daughters bedroom.
I just recently made around 50 yo-yos. They are addicting to make and I can’t stop. I’m thinking on applying them to my daughter’s head bands, blouses, and to a pair of jeans.
That is an extraordinary, beautiful collection of yo-yos!
Love those yo yo’s so bright and cheerful..
fun!! i love yo yo’s
That is beautiful. One of the first things I ever learned to sew at my grandmother’s as a little girl were yoyos. They are still fun and in fact I am about to embellish my daughter’s curtains with some.
A spiralling yo-yo quilt. Another must do prodject!
I thought that I already had in my brain too many things that I want to make to even consider giving another one houseroom. But these yo-yo’s are a great temptation…
What a neat idea and it would be perfect on my country tree..
I really love those Yo-Yos, but I never made anything with all my Yo-Yos. I guess its time now, to go and grab them.
wow..very pretty…
Those are stunning! A garland is such a great idea!
I’ve never made a yo-yo, but maybe I’ll give it a try now!
I’ve been thinking for a long time about giving Yoyo’s a go. I’m thinking christmas fabric and a garland to put around the tree.
Thanks for posting this and jolting my memory
Beautiful! I’ve been wanting to try making yoyos, and this is the perfect inspiration
Lovely website -such great ideas! I’ve so far made only large ones – but now am inspired to work on some little yo-yo’s to play with.
yo yo fabulous!
What a charming idea to string yo-yos into garlands! Now to learn how to make yo-yos . . .
My mother in love taught me how to make yo-yo’s years before I started quilting. I have always liked them!
WOW ! I’ve never seen anything like this ! Never knew how a yo-yo is made until now
Thanks !
That would be a fun way to use up scraps and small pieces of my favorite fabrics.
Debbie
What beautiful yo-yo’s. I love yo-yo’s!
What a great use for those small fabric scraps. Unfortunately, it means justification for me to save even smaller scraps of fabric! I love the idea of a quilt made of scrap yo-yos.
I just learned how to make Yo – Yo’s and love them! They are so adorable, easy to make and can cutey up so many things!!! I love the idea of the yo yo memory quilt! Good thinking… I am always blown away by all the creativity
I have several sizes of the Clover yo-yo maker and it really makes it easy-peasy.
I am making a garland with large ric-rac, yo-yo’s and buttons for the holidays and
am hoping to be inspired to make a table runner.
I have been wanting to try this. I was at a yard sale and found a tiny piece made up of yo-yo’s and just love it.
I’ve got to share this yo-yo link to my yo-yo making friend. Whenever I see something new made with yo-yos, I let her know.
Love the yo-yos! I just read a tutorial on them and can’t wait to try it out my self. It looks very fun and addictive! =)
Great idea, I will try to make yo-yos to turn into medals for the competitions/games in my daughter’s birthday party
I’ve never made yoyos before, but this looks awesome!
This is really beautiful. I love all of the colors and enjoy making yo yos myself!
