Jennifer’s Fabric Focus ~ Patchwork Notebooks Free Pattern
We’re thrilled to share that Jennifer Casa from JCasa *handmade is joining us for a monthly fabric focus, starting today! Each month Jennifer has a new project featuring one of our latest, favorite collections from the shop. You can find more from Jennifer on her beautiful blog, of course, and she also sells a variety of sewing patterns, knitting patterns and handmade goods in her shop. Today Jennifer is giving away two kits to make these notebooks, so visit JCasa *handmade to enter to win and then come back to download your free Back-to-School Notebook tutorial. Enjoy!

Hello! I am delighted to be joining you for Sew,Mama,Sew!’s monthly fabric focus. We are in the midst of quite the snowy winter here in Ohio, but Moda’s bright and cheery fabrics have me dreaming of springtime, longer days, warmer weather, sunny skies and all that good stuff.

I am especially loving Dizzy White, with its vibrant colors and happy little flowers-– picture it in a patchwork picnic blanket combined with sky blues and crisp whites, or how about some fresh new pillows with a bit of grassy green and sunny yellow appliqué. Are your wheels turning?

To highlight just how well some of these new Moda prints get along, I’ve created a tutorial for my all-time favorite Back-to-School Notebook. My hope is that you will get some ideas as to combining these great prints as well as learn a little patchwork technique along the way.

This quilted patchwork cover fits a classic standard composition notebook and features a pen sleeve on the spine. In the tutorial, you’ll find complete instructions for two versions of the notebook as well as ideas to embellish and personalize it further.

For this project I have combined Dizzy White, Lollipops Pink, Dots Pink and Dots Orange from the Oz collection by Sanae with Breezy Budding Pink and Stripe Dewdrop from the Verna collection by Kate Spain. I’ve also incorporated some of the Essex Linen/Cotton Blend as well as some of Girl Friday’s Writing Paper Plain for some whimsical embroidery. This is happy stuff, I tell you.

So what are you waiting for? Download the tutorial and get started! Enjoy + happy making! xoxo

Awesome! I just passed by a huge stack of composition books at Target for 50 cents each, but they were ugleee. I’ll have to pop on over and pick some up, now.
I love this idea. So very cute!! I am considering whipping up a few myself. Check out my new blog for similar crafty musings: http://www.sundaystitch.com

I was ironing fabric yesterday for a quilt thinking of all the great tutorials Elizabeth posted and hoping y’all would find somebody to take her place. I’m so thrilled to see the monthly fabric focus from JCHandmade. Can’t wait to see the rest!

I love those! I’m such a sucker for pretty notebooks!
these are adorable.
This is right on time because I need to make one for my son’s easter basket. I had planned a simpler one, but will now get some “boy” patchwork going on!
This is a beautiful example of color blocking and quilting. I love the zig-zag of the fabric detail. Great tutorial!

I love the “pen goes here” part. Too cute!
This is perfect timing. I have a month to make a present for a little boy in my life, and had already decided upon a composition book cover. I hadn’t quite decided how I was going to put a pen holder on it. Little did I know that SMS would go so far as to figure out the dimensions and instructions for me. Thanks!
Thank you so much for the tutorial. This is too cute. I am going to try to make a couple for my kids.
Thanks for the great tutorial. I have some birthdays coming up that these would be perfect.
What a nice tutorial. It looks very cute and I’m looking forward to making one. Thank you!
Thank you so much for the tutorial for the notebooks. I just love them. Where did you ever get the fabric with the lines on it like kids use to do their writing on?
Looks like a great project!

Thanks so much for the tutorial…….I love it. It is on my list of things to do and then I will have a nice notebook cover for my to do list! Hugs~
I love the look of these patchwork notebooks. I’ve downloaded the tutorial three times now and am continually getting an error “file damaged”. I also have clicked the link to open from the page rather than to do the right click/save as and am getting the same thing.
Anyone have any ideas? I’d love to have this tutorial. Given all the comments it seems that I must be the only one not able to open this tut. Strange.
Wanted to post a follow up comment to my last one to say that I finally have had success in opening the pdf. Looks awesome. Thank you so much.
Wow. I am IN LOVE with this blog and the tutorials. I want to learn how to sew (by hand and machine) and your site has small, simple projects that would be perfect to start with (and make fantastic presents too).
I had not seen the Dizzy white line and now I’ve got another thing to pine for…too many great fabrics and not enough time!! I will definitely be using this tutorial!!
This is a good tutorial for practicing machine piecing (NOT a skill I possess!) and color work. This was clear and useful; I completed it in an hour (plus a bit). Thanks for a good lesson!
Great tutorial. Easy to follow.
“pen goes in here” “top secret stuff” soooo cute! I love that it’s hand embroidered.
Just what we need while waiting for Spring. Will it ever get here? Thanks!
Awesome! Easy, cheeky, and foolproof! I just loved it!
I love this project! I made one for my daughter to take to a birthday party… it makes a nice little girl journal.
Thanks the author for article. The main thing do not forget about users, and continue in the same spirit.
You have definitely inspired me! http://piecelove.wordpress.com/2010/03/14/summer-camp/
I had to have some of that notebook paper fabric!
The journals are absolutely adorable! A great gift idea. Who wouldn’t love to receive one! A very inspiring article!
It’s so beautiful craft. I love it. Thanks for sharing your idea! God bless you!
I absolutely LOVE both the pattern AND the fabrics selected for use in the sample! It’s a great excercise in how to vary the patterns and scale of one’s fabrics in any project! Thanks for sharing!
I love Sew Mama Sew~ Because I always can find inspirational tutorials like this one! I just finished my Notebook cover based off of this pattern. I thank you! I personalized it with the letter “P” for a co-worker who’s mother has cancer. This is a great gift for anyone. Thank you again Jennifer for sharing!
Thank you SO much for this adorable tutorial! I hope I can handle it as a beginner. I love the writing paper fabric! How can I get some? I tried clicking on the link, but it wasn’t found. Anyone able to find it somewhere?
Fabulous! We’re sharing a link to this projec page at http://www.WeAllSew.com!
The notebook cover is perfect – it’s going on my Christmas gift to do list!
