April 15 ~ Quilt of the Day

Winter Rainbow by Faith, Fresh Lemons
This is actually the back of Faith’s quilt, but we think it’s fun to focus a little on how the fabrics you choose for the back of your quilt can really add something special to the overall effect. Here’s the front of Faith’s beautiful quilt. Faith also writes about her Winter Rainbow quilt on her blog and shares some more pictures there.

It’s the last day for you to enter to win one of these prizes!
Comment in any post this week for your chance to

I love both sides of the quilt. Well done Faith! I like the idea of doing designs on both sides of it though I believe it takes more time.
What a lovely quilt! I love the idea of creating an interesting look for the back of the quilt.
Beautiful quilt!
I can’t decide which side I prefer!
It is a lovely quilt!
Love it! I’ve only done one quilt where a nine patch was used for the back but plan to do this again. No worry about having enough of one piece when several pieces can be used to compliment the front.
What a beautiful quilt! Thanks for reminding me to think more creatively about the back of my quilt – it doesn’t always have to big just a big piece of fabric. Well done!
Half the time I like the backs of my quilts better than the fronts! I need to start approaching all my quilting like that! I use whatever I have available. Once I used a vintage quilt top! I try to add something to make it special and not just one big expanse of fabric.
I never know what to do for the back but I REALLY this idea where the entire back mimics one block!
One thing I love about modern quilting is the interesting designs people do on the backs of the quilts. I love the idea of using extra blocks (a la Oh Fransson), as well as the asymetrical look that is so in vogue now.
I love the use of bright color on the back, well done!
Oh now this is so pretty I love the simplicy and then the “POW” on the front!!
Wow, that’s so beautiful! In that way, you actually get two quilts in one.
This quilt is a beauty! You’ve inspired me to make my next quilt back more interesting.
Love this quilt! I love that the back is as pretty as the front.
Very fun. I never thought of not doing a solid back before!
I like to make my backs interesting… piece some leftover blocks or leftover fabs!
That is amazing. I wish I were the Faith that owned that quilt.
I love the patterns and colors! Red, Yellow, and Blue can never go wrong. I love it.
I love to see the backs of quilts made beautiful!! This one is great.
I love the idea of continuing the idea from the front onto the back–and not having to find one piece of fabric big enough always helps out too… I love this one, it’ so colorful and I just want to crawl under it with a good book!
I like the colorful background. As a hand quilter, I’d not like to quilt through seams on BOTH back and front. It would be harder to get a consistent small stitch size.
For machine quilting, this is a lovely decision!
What a gorgeous quilt!
I love this quilt! Gorgeous!
what a great idea! i hate buying all that material for my backing when i have so many smaller cuts i could use!
I love the big patchwork on the back.
I love the back the most!!
Such a good idea! There’s no reason the back can’t be as attractive as the front.
Hm, at what point does a back become interesting enough to make the quilt reversible? Love it.
love it! I love when the back is just as pretty as the front. And I’m adoring the grey on the front!!
I am just starting to do more on the backs of my quilts. I love how they turnout!
I first saw this quilt when she finished the top! The finished product is beautiful!
really nice!
Oooof, this is daring to make the back a quilt in itself. Yikes!
The quilt is beautiful. lately, I have been using up some of the fabrics in my stash for the backs of my quilts or piecing together fabrics that were used on the front. I love coordinating the front with the back.
Beautiful quilt – love the back!
I like that the back is not just a solid piece, but several nice fabrics. I always have thought (beginner quilter here!) that the back “had to be” one solid piece. This one has a nice front and back!
Beautiful quilt! Thank you for sharing it.
Now that looks like something I could quilt!
I haven’t worked as much on the backs of my quilts — except to try to choose fabric that wouldn’t show quilting mistakes. Perhaps it is time to make them more interesting!
I like to do a little piecing on the back so that it’s the back, but not borring.
Lovely quilt, great colours!
Thanks for the inspiration!
Beautiful! It really highlights the fabrics.
So simple, but very, very pretty. Just proves that you don’t have to spend 200 hundred hours sewing to produce a lovely quilt.
What a great way to feature favored fabrics!
the back is pretty but the front shown on flickr is beautiful!!
Front and back are both beautiful. I love the idea of making patchwork backs – it makes for a truly special quilt.
I love the way this top is pieced. Thank you for the inspiration!
Very pretty – pieced backs are my favourite!
That’s a great quilt on both sides! I like the trend I’ve seen of piecing the back at least a little bit.
Beautiful quilt! I love the front. This quilt makes me want to buy some charcoal Kona fabric. I tend toward lighter colors for sashing, but this looks great. Time to step outside my comfort zone.
This quilt is beautiful both on the back and the front. You did a great job.
I absolutely love Faith’s quilt. So gorgeous!!!
Great quilt.
I like the patwork idea for the back of the quilt too! Usually I’m just too excited to get it done that I just use a solid piece instead.
I love different backs. Then the quilt can be reversible! Beautiful job.
I like the strong reverse side & that Faith used prints from
the front ( i share her pain at exhausting some of her favorite
fabrics…..bittersweet ! ) Her quilt is a true two-fer !
I always just backed quilts in one big plain piece of fabric, but am loving the pieced backs, and starting to use them. More fun design options!
I was just thinking this morning that I’d like to use gray in a quilt! I’m glad to see it can work so well.
The back complemented the front of this quilt. Sometimes I use up the left over fabric from the front to make the backing.
Thank you everyone for your kind comments! What an honor to be included on Sew, Mama, Sew! I had a great time making this one and the back even works great for picnicking at the park. I have my kids sit on different colors…makes “staying put” fun for them. LOL
i love the backing of your quilt. You chose great fabric combinations.
i love quilts that can be reversible>
The back looks deceptively simple. Two quilts in one!
I like a back that is interesting, coordinates with the front, but doesn’t compete with the front. But then again, the idea of a totally reversible quilt is appealing too. hmmmmmmm…
Another beauty! It really makes me think about using dark sashing fabric, something I have yet to do. Thanks for sharing!
The dark grey is a perfect foil for the bright blocks. Lovely job!
I love this idea!
I like the back and the front of this lovely, colorful quilt. It’s nice to have a pieced back – first, it’s like two quilts in one, and second, one can use fabric remaining from the front of the quilt so it’s economical and space-saving as well.
I do love it when the back could easily be the front (or vice versa)! It makes it so beautiful and fun!
Oh, I like the bits of color in the sashing on the front. So pretty!
I love that quilt!
Wonderful!
Winter Rainbow is the perfect name for this quilt!
a very cheerful quilt for tax day!
I love the charcoal grey paired with those bright colors!
A really beautiful quilt and I love both sides! Sharonj.
Such a cheerful quilt front and back.
I love the colors. Great combination.
I adore the quilt back (the front is amazing too, but… ) It’s simplicity, and the beauty of the fabrics really speak to me.
I have always tried to choose a fun, contrasting fabric for my quilt backs, but this has inspired me to try to be a bit more creative with my future backs!
One huge 9-patchn is a great idea! I love it for a quick baby gift or a throw!
I think I prefer the back! And she’s got 2 quilts for the price of one.

I love the back and the front! Very nice colours!
Nice use of color and value!
Really pretty…front AND back!
This is beautiful! I’m a bit nervous about pieced backs (have trouble getting them to line up exactly), but this is inspiring.
Awesome choice for the color palette!
Very nice! I like the simplicity of the back. It’d work as a front if you wanted to switch it up too.
Great idea!
Love the back, how it matches the front.
I’m a recent convert to making the back as interesting as the front and basically try to ‘tie’ the two together
