April 25 ~ Quilt of the Day

Heart/h Quilt Detail by Chawne, cauchy09
This Courthouse Steps pattern quilt from Chawne was machine-pieced, hand-quilted and hand-bound. It measures 58″ x 62″. Chawne writes, “The quilt is made in the same spirit that my great-grandmother brought to her quilting in Alabama in the early 20th century. It is a utility quilt made from the worn out pants of various extended family members and carefully put together into a simple geometric pattern. The fabrics are all cotton twill or corduroy: the white is painter’s pants, the blue is denim from heavy-duty jeans and the browns are various shades of khaki twill and corduroy. The quilt is backed with a patched vintage sheet and hand-quilted with thick cotton string.” Here’s a wider view of the quilt.

chawne, ik like your quilt a lot. I can see that it is heavvy and flowing at the same time.
That quilt is awesome!
Thanks for showing how beautiful recycled materials can be!
So beautiful and I love how she reused materials!
Love the simple quilting!
I love this quilt. The simplicity of the color scheme, the number of “steps” are very striking. It’s also very cool to have the quilt made from something meaningful.
Impressive!
Wow, this quilt is great~ I’ve been saving jeans and my husbands work pants for just the right project and I’m thinking this just might be it! Thanks for all the inspiration!
that looks so clean and neat
xx
A “green” contemporary take on a favorite block — looks so clean and crisp.
beautiful!
Gorgeous. I’ve never seen a courthouse steps put together quite like this before.
Whoa! I can’t imagine hand quilting thru those thicknesses. Striking quilt though.
so fantastic.
Lovely. I always want to use my kids’ worn out jeans, but I find if denim is not done well it looks really wrong, so I’ve never actually done it. This is beautiful.
Very pretty. I would love a quilt like that.
I love this one! The colors and design are awesome!
Great quilt.
This is fabulous!
Wow! That’s terrific.

What an undertaking! Does everyone point out which pieces came from them?
OMG, that looks like a lot of work. Very impressive.

Love this quilt – great use of re-cycled fabrics.
I love those colours.
peaceful and beautiful
Very vintage-y yet clean and contemporary. I like it, but must have been a hard one to quilt by hand.
Hand quilting–you’re very patient!!!
This is so beautiful, and the hand-quilting just knocked me out!
What a treasure! I love the simple pattern and the history in this quilt!
Stunning quilt. Looking at it, you can almost feel the heft of the fabric, and the coolness of the backing. My great-grandmother’s quilts always felt heavy, yet the cotton felt cool against the skin.
Beautiful hand quilting!
Stunning. You can almost feel the heft of the fabric and the coolness of the backing just by looking at the pictures.
Wow, love, love, love it!
I love this quilt and the history behind it. Just perfect…:)
So simple, and yet so beautiful!
The simplicity and impact of this quilt are striking! It’s a beautiful reminder of “less is more.”

Neat quilt! The look of “dimension” made by the combination of the pattern and fabrics is really interesting!
Wonderful and inspiring – Chawne’s hand-quilting is always beautiful!
absolutely awesome
Great idea! I’ve been saving jeans for awhile so that I can make a jean quilt. Love this one. Of course mine won’t be quilted by hand!
This is a great quilt. I think it is neat that the quilt is made out of worn jeans and pants.
I love the soothing colors but it’s also striking. I love the stitches. Really wonderful.
Love it. Courthouse Steps blocks are so simple and yet they just draw you in. Amazing work with the hand quilting…Chawne, you are much more patient than me. Great job. Thanks for sharing!
That is really neat!
Lovely. I really like the picture of the back, too.
What a great idea! That would make a wonderful picnic quilt.
Amazing! I love heavy denim quilts…but such thin pieces in this pattern…I can’t imagine how hard it was to piece together. Those seams! And hand quilting! How did you do that through these thick fabrics???
That quilt is gorgeous!
Chawne=the best.
Something that has become clear to me through the quilting month here is that there are a lot more fabrics out that that can be used for quilts than just the ones I buy at the quilt store! Thank you for giving me a way to repurpose some of the pants and clothes that are hanging around, not able to be used as clothing anymore!
Your quilt is so inspiring!
What a neat idea for old pants. Love the back, saw it on flicker.
oh wow, i love this one! the hand quilting is especially stunning!
Simply beautiful! The colours, the pattern, and the quietness that emanes from it.
That is so refreshing! A recycled and beautiful quilt!
I’ve seen this one on Flicker before. Definitely one of my favourites, especially how the maker reused darn near everything in it.
Oh my goodness, I originally loved the subtle colors and strong geometric design but once I read about it, I love the resourcefulness just as much! Thanks for sharing.
I am clicking on the Super Like button! Chawne’s 30 minutes a day commitment has motivated me…that’s doable!
You know, I was just amazed at the beauty of the quilt–but the story behind it makes me respect it and the artist so much! Awesome work!
I love recycled items. So pretty.
I have been saving jeans and this may be the quilt to make with them.
Very intriguing and cozy feeling.
I love such a clear geometrical pattern!
What a brilliant idea and the result is great! Well done Chawne it seems like a lot of work as well.
I love this quilt! It’s so pretty and so useful. I love the use of the old clothing.
This is stunning. The simplicity of the white and blue with the complexity of the courthouse steps block = a gorgeous juxtaposition of color and form.
That is so cool! It’s a fantastic way to recycle. Lovely!
My grandmother made utility quilts too. I love them.
How cool is that using a simple pattern and recycle family members clothing to make a lovely quilt.
Wonderful to see some hand quilting.
