Interview with Kaffe Fassett
We have a long-time love of all things Kaffe Fassett, from the knitting to fabric and quilting (and every other Kaffe creative endeavor!). One of our inspirations for Quilting Month II was the publication of Kaffe Fassett’s beautiful new book, Simple Shapes Spectacular Quilts. The book, written in collaboration with Liza Prior Lucy, includes 23 original quilt designs and over 200 gorgeous photographs full of color and inspiration. The quilt patterns range from projects suitable for beginning quilters to more complex designs. Geometric inspiration for the designs is shared in over a hundred photos, an adventure that takes quilters from the squares of garden pavers, cargo containers and carefully organized shop displays, to the squares in quilt designs like the Yellow Potpourri pattern (a free PDF download in the STC Craft Quilt-Along mentioned below). Finished quilts in the book are also beautifully highlighted in photos of wonderful urban landscapes. You’ll view the the shapes of the world in a whole new way, with quilting in mind and Kaffe’s insight to guide you.
STC Craft is hosting a Quilt-Along in celebration of the publication of Simple Shapes Spectacular Quilts. You can download a free pattern from the book and find details about how to participate on the STC Craft blog.
You have a chance to win a copy of Simple Shapes Spectacular Quilts with your comment on today’s post! We’ll keep the giveaway open until Thursday night. Enjoy our interview with Kaffe Fassett, and be sure to comment for your chance to win a copy of this beautiful new book.
Edited: This giveaway is now closed. Thanks!

SMS: First of all, we’d just like to say what an honor it is to ask you a few questions and to be a part of your blog tour. We’re in awe of your work… Your approach to color, your quilts, knitting and, of course, your fabric! We love it all. Your new book, Kaffe Fassett’s Simple Shapes Spectacular Quilts, joins the list too!
It’s so nice that you included a wide range of quilt patterns that work for beginning through advanced quilters. We especially loved Stripescape, which you mentioned you handstitched. Do you have a favorite quilt and/or pattern in the book?
Kaffe: No, I really don’t have favorites. The quilts are so different that I love them all for different reasons.
SMS: Do you end up keeping many of your quilts? Is everything you produce part of your work or do you ever, say, sew a gift for a friend?
Kaffe: Most of the quilts travel to exhibitions of my work so yes, I do keep them. I have never made a quilt for a friend but I have knitted projects and it is a lovely process to make something with your hands for someone you love.

Yellow Potpourri Quilt
SMS: We enjoyed your discussion in the book about being fully absorbed in creation, like you were as a child while creating toy villages from mill ends. Do you still find yourself focusing on simple shapes in the world even though that intense period of focus on shape for the book has ended?
Kaffe: Definitely, working on this book has made me focus on all these shapes as they occur in the urban landscape. I keep finding fantastic locations for quilts in the book even though they have all been shot now. I never stop looking but this book in particular has sharpened my eye for geometry.
SMS: Do you photograph (or document in some other way) the visual inspiration for your quilts?
Kaffe: Occasionally, I do take a photograph but I used to do a lot of drawing, particularly when it is some source where the idea is partially or fully formed like a modern painting or distressed walls on a street.

Stripescape Quilt
SMS: We mentioned our love for the way you use color in your designs and fabric. Is your home full of the same rich colors?
Kaffe: Yes, of course my house is full of color and delicious finds from my travels. I’ve done a book called Welcome Home, Kaffe Fassett which is about to be re-published later this year. It really shows the details of my surroundings.
SMS: Can you tell us what to look for from you in the near future? What’s next?
Kaffee: I have just designed a range of carpets and needlepoint cushions. Our quilts will be on exhibition at the Houston Quilt Festival and at the Birmingham England Festival of Quilt this fall. In December there will be an exhibition of all of my work, including quilts, at Silkiborg, Denmark. Please check our website’s calendar page for more exhibition information.
Thank you, Kaffe!

so amazing!
They say to never judge a book by it’s cover, but this must be an exception to the rule! The cover is delicious!
I love Kaffe Fassett’s designs! His flair for color is just stunning.
I have big pile of Kaffe Fasset fabric just waiting for some inspiration. I think this book would be just the thing I need!
What a pleasure it is to look thru his books! One of these years, I’m gonna devote my whole quilting life to making some of his patterns.
Love Kaffe’s bold colours and designs. Thanks for posting this interview!
My very favorite quilts are always those with simple shapes. I like the beauty of individual fabrics to shine through. I need to get this book!
How interesting! The book looks lovely.
The circle quilt in the bottom right is awesome! Looks intimidating though.
I love geometrics, can’t wait to read this!
Kaffe has done it again – I can see that this is a book I need to add to my collection! I am completely in awe of the way he manages to combine seemingly uncompatible patterns and colours and make it work!
i would LOVE this book!
He is something else…I have all of his books (will have to get this one now too!!) and a HUGE stash of his fabric (that I just can’t bring myself to use!!)
Kaffe taught me a very very valuable lesson: don’t be afraid of color and that whatever my imagination comes up with is what I should do.
Would so love to meet him sometime!!!
Wow. You are getting such amazing interviews this month! Thanks for the interview.
don’t you just love yummy, colorful quilts? I think stripescape is one of my favorites….
I love his sense of colour. So beautiful!
Oh, I love anything Kaffe Fassett! I have all of his books EXCEPT for this new one. I collect and use his fabrics often. His beautiful designs, so full of color, just make me HAPPY! I recently used one of his polka dot batik fabrics in a quilt – I know these fabrics are no longer made, so I am careful about where I put them to use, I want them to last forever. He is truly an amazing artist!
Kaffe’s quilts are breathtaking, absolutely breathtaking!

Pick me, pick me!

I would be over the moon if I won his new book. Thanks for the chance.
More amazing stuff from Kaffe. Thanks for the give away!
If I don’t win the book I’ll buy it! In my 70th year I bought Kaffe Fassett’s, Kaleidoscope of Quilts, and was inspired to embark on a new journey… Quilting. It is now my passion. I searched the internet for the original fabrics for the cover quilt, “Hot Diamonds.” Many were discontinued. I found all but one…. from 9 different quilt shops across the U.S. It took a year till my quilting skills allowed me to complete this quilt It is the focal point in my home. It took a 2nd at the Canfield Fair, and one of my art quilts won a 1st. I’m greatful to the initial spark from Kaffe Fassett and to Quilting Arts for support and inovative spirit. Pakki
Very nice, i love her colors combinations! Thank you for this great giveaway!
Kaffe’s quilts frighten me a little because they are so saturated in colour – this is me being timid and so these designs are pretty insprational.

My one really guilty pleasure is spending time at the one local quilt shop that just happens to carry Kaffe’s fabrics. I, too, have a tough time cutting into the fabric but what fun when I do! Simple Shapes would make it much easier.(And what a way to spend an allowance!)
I love how Kaffe finds inspiration for textiles in all sorts of places, rusty fences, old walls and rocks as well as all the natural sources we usually use such as flowers and animals. This new book looks very exciting.
