Board Member ~ Kathie from Ramonster
You probably recognize Kathie Sever from her amazing pattern reviews of some of our favorite Colette patterns, and the Frida pattern for kids too. Kathie creates some of the most amazing, one-of-a-kind, indie/Americana-themed clothing around. Kathie joined the Sew,Mama,Sew! Editorial Board last month to help us plan a spectacular Make It, Wear It! June on the blog. You can find Kathie at Ramonster and Future Craft Collective. Enjoy her interview!
SMS: How long have you been sewing?
Kathie: I guess since i was about 7 or 8. My mom was a sewing teacher and always always had her machine and fabric stash in an accessible spot and pretty much let my sister and I have at it. And I had at it.
SMS: What do you enjoy about sewing? What are your favorite things to make?
Kathie: I think my favorite thing about sewing is that it satisfies both my creative side as well as my pragmatic side. You are more able to access the creative aspects of sewing through nuanced skill building, and the skills that are the by-product of your desire to create also happen to give you the ability to clothe your family, warm your beds and cushion your chairs.
SMS: How do you find time to fit creativity (sewing and any other creative loves) into your life?
Kathie: I made it into my J.O.B.
SMS: Do you have a favorite sewing tip or skill that’s made things work better for you?
Kathie: Follow directions. My mom and sister, both of whom are vastly superior to me in the technical aspects of sewing, still laugh I think when they reflect on my evolution into ‘professional sewing type person’… I half-assed EVERYTHING I made for years…! I refused to use patterns, or if I did cut from them I then went about neglecting directions willy nilly. And the things I made showed it. I finally decided to bite the bullet and school myself, and boy howdy! It sure makes things look nicer.

SMS: What’s a favorite thing you’ve made lately? Why?
Kathie: Normally my favorite thing I’ve ever made is the last thing I finished. That’s always a good sign. Although I have a soft spot in my heart for this dress. (Here are a couple more close-up shots!)
SMS: Can you tell us a little more about yourself?
Kathie: A little more about myself… Hmm… Well– If I don’t run at least three times a week I have panic attacks. I vacillate in the spectrum between: bacon and egg tacos, and spinach and kale juice fasts. I have a husband who loves me so much he recorded my favoritest song in the world and put it on his last album. And he actually improved upon it. I have two kids who remind me to stay connected to my grand triumvirate of life (and parenting) wisdom: Shel Silverstein, Thich Nhat Hanh and my middle school yearbook. The first because he is awesome and silly and deep. The second because he is true and right and deep. The third because it is painful and utterly shallow and me. And in accepting one I have to accept the other and in accepting the other I have to accept it all.
Oh and also I have chickens and I like Nutella.
