June 27 ~ Make It, Wear It! Inspiration

Sewn by Amanda, little cumulus
Pattern: 20-Minute Skirt Tutorial
Notes: Amanda writes, “I cut the fabric to be about twice my waist measurement; with 1.5x it doesn’t allow for as much movement as I would like towards the knees. So far I like the 2x a lot. I also zigzagged the fabric to the elastic right sides together, instead of the way suggested in the tutorial– I found it easier that way. I used the existing hem of the sheet, which made the whole thing that much faster (yay, I hate hemming!).”
Fabric: Amanda continues, “The skirt is made from a vintage sheet (I have a ginormous stash of them that I use to make clothes for my Etsy shop… I keep them all in our walk-in closet, which my husband only half-jokingly calls my ‘office’). I love sewing with vintage sheets; they’re soft, bright, cheap, funky, and never shrink or wrinkle.”
Check out the other lovely things Amanda sews in her Flickr sets.

20-minute-skirt is a great thing, especially with vintage fabric. I love it, the fabric and the quick making.
That’s how I make most of my skirts and dresses: quick measure, quick simple cut and elastic. Haven’t got the peace and patience for real patterns… unfortunatly, because there are lots of nice ones I would like to sew.
Love the vintage sheet used! So perfectly bright and cheerful!
I love the colors and print in that vintage sheet. It’s a beautiful skirt.
Was just admiring Amanda’s store and everything in it I would love to own myself. The sheets she sews with are so Pretty!!!
i love vintage sheets too.
Great idea using the hem to avoid hemming

I’ve got some vintage sheets, I might have to make one!
Great skirt! I love the bright colors – it looks great with the yellow top! Thanks for the tips.
Cute skirt. Thanks!
so pretty!
It’s so cute! I think my mom still has bedsheets like your new skirt!
thanks for the very helpful tutorial
Oooooh you remind me of those pillowcases I should use up to make skirts of.. Thanks for the hints! The flowers on your sheet are sweeter though
When refashioning something I love to use any existing features I can, such as hems, to save time! The skirt is lovely!
Lovely! I love the yellow! I might have to make a couple copies of this myself.
congrats, Amanda! Beautiful as always.
Smart girl-cute idea-love the fabric!
I want to make this!!!
Great use of a vintage sheet! I’d love to make a skirt in 20 minutes – even the 1 hour ones always seem to take me longer than they should. This is a beuatiful piece of clothing for such a small output of time.
cute skirt
That’s it! I’ve got to start shopping for vintage sheets! And make a skirt with this tutorial!
Very cute skirt! I have some vintage sheets that I think I’ll try using for one of these.
This is a great tutorial. I think I might try this one.
Very cute. I just taught my niece how to sew an elastic waist skirt and then made one for my daughter for hula class. Now I think I need a couple for myself.
See my niece here: http://www.ayorata.com/2010/06/protege.html
I’m going to make a variety of these this week.
Oh, I adore Amanda’s stuff!
So cute! Would never of thought about using old sheets to make dresses and skirts. I hate to admit this but I just cleaned out my father in law’s linen closet and got rid of those sheets that would of been just perfect
That skirt is really sweet, and it is always fun to make things from sheets! Thanks for the easy tutorial.
Love the skirt and definitely love to avoid hemming at all costs! I definitely need to make something for myself as most of my sewing creations go to my little one…
cute skirt, and great idea! I’m gonna have to try that. I have recently started a vintage sheet stash myself.
What a lovely skirt for spring!
Love it! Wish my op shop had nice sheets
