Skirt Sew-Along Part Three ~ Sewing the Skirt
Today Kathie shares the third and final installment in our Skirt Sew-Along! Start with Part One (Materials, Preparing Pattern, Cutting Fabric), then follow along with Part Two (Sewing the Waistband & Shirring) right on through to today’s instructions where you’ll sew the whole skirt together! Tomorrow we’ll post a Q & A to make sure any questions you have in the comments are answered. We hope you’re ready to sew along!
Sewing the Skirt Body:
1. Pin one pocket piece 2” down from the top edge of either side of both sides of your top skirt panels, aligned as in the photo.
Sewing pocket pieces on the panel.
2. Sew the pocket pieces on to the sides of the skirt panels.
3. Place the top skirt panels right sides together, with the pocket pieces flared out.

4. Pin and sew from the top down the side of the skirt panel, pivoting and sewing around the outer edge of the pocket, then continuing down the side of the skirt.
Stitching around pocket piece.
5. Repeat on the other side of outer skirt.
Serging the sides.
6. Serge to finish, if you so choose.
Pressed skirt panel with pocket.
7. Finish bottom of outer skirt with a rolled hem.
Rolled hem.
8. Baste 1/2” around the top of the outer skirt for gathering.
Sewing the Skirt Lining:
9. Pin and sew down both side seams, matching underskirt panels up right sides together.
Serged underskirt.
10. Serge to finish if you so choose.
Rolled hem on underskirt.
11. Finish the bottom of the skirt lining with a rolled hem.
Baste to gather.
12. Baste 1/2” around the top of under skirt for gathering.
Join Skirts & Waistband:
13. With skirt body right-side out, place the underskirt inside outer skirt, also right-side out. Place skirts inside waistband, which should be upside-down and inside out.
Pinning skirts.
14. Match up side seams of both skirts and waistband. Pin.
Gathering.
15. Adjust gathering by pulling up basting stitches to get all skirt layers to match width of the waistband. (Use a lot of pins– It gets messy.)
Stitching.
16. Sew.
Serged!
17. Serge to finish, if you so choose!

I’m slightly confused about how to finish the top of the skirt without a serger?
I’m quite tempted to give this one a try since it seems pretty easy, but I still worry I won’t be able to wear it. It seems like one would need a tiny waist like the girl in the picture to pull it off.

Finished mine but it’s too small in the waist and too mini
I also had trouble with the pockets and sewed them shut. Glad I used an old curtain panel and not my nice fabric! I’ll likely try again, though. Hope everyone else’s turns out better 
I think you could also use the serger for the rolled hem . . . maybe I’ll try that since I otherwise always have to do hems by hand.

I love reading through these tutorials. I am teaching myself to sew and there are so many things to learn. I am finding tutorials a great way to learn different tricks and techniques in sewing.
I like the pocket. I hate clothes without pockets.
lina you are my new best friend. but acutally i don’t have a tiny waist. in fact, after two children and a deep abiding love of sierra nevada, i don’t really have a waist at all. i think the trick is in the higher waistband. it sort of hides the waist/no waist issue.
oh and don’t forget to IRON it all when you’re done. IRON all that gathering and it will be way more flattering. WAY more.
Definitely not to this point, but I’ve got my fabric cut out finally!

Aaaah, you make it seem so easy and do-able however, how do you handle the noise from the machine waking the babies? Hhhhmmmm ?

I love this turorial!! Still confused about the waistband, sewing the back and the front, but I have done them before in my hit and miss attack method and it works. But thankyou for sharing it… I was always curious about the elastic in the bobbin now I know!
