Hello, Sew,Mama,Sew! readers!
I have been loving all the Back to School features here at Sew,Mama,Sew! this month-– It is such an exciting time of year. Since I have two daughters about to begin Kindergarten, I thought it would be nice to make a hair band to keep their long locks out of their eyes as they embark on this new adventure. And it had to be something special.

My inspiration was fabric, of course-– namely the new Fulham Road Lawn collection from Alexander Henry. The fabric itself has an amazing, silky translucence to it and the prints are breathtaking. They are perfect to put a slightly whimsical twist on a basic hair band-– How fun to have butterflies and flowers on your head to keep you company at school.

For this project, I chose to feature Oxford Butterfly Blue Gold and Blue Bell Pink from the Fulham Road collection. I used Essex Linen/Cotton in white for the backing and added some Pellon 911FF Fusible Interfacing to give the hair bands just a touch of reinforcement without making them stiff.

The florals in the collection work just as well as the butterflies-– you can make these simple and understated, or wildly whimsical-– it’s entirely up to you and your fabric stash.

I hope you enjoy my Aflutter pattern and have fun making many, many of these unique hair bands for your little ones or even yourself. You can download the free Aflutter Hair Band Pattern PDF today! As always, if you make anything with Fulham Road or using any of our free PDF patterns and tutorials, we would love to see your creations-– So please show off your work in the Sew,Mama,Sew! Flickr pools. Enjoy and happy making! xoxo

Love the pattern for today! I have a daughter with thick, long, curly hair she loves having her hair flowing free…being a “wild child”. But I think with her love of nature, she will consent to having some buterflies or flower such as these in her hair! Thanks so much for the pattern
