Baby showers are a special time for the celebration and arrival of a new and precious life. When you look back at the history of baby showers the gifts given to the new parents were handmade. Clothing and blankets were gifted and made with love. I think that our society is moving back to handmade and found objects, and we are realizing the significance of instilling the grace and beauty of these arts to our children. In doing so we’ve come to embrace handmade gifts with a new modern flair. So instead of rushing out to your local big box store for your next shower why not make your gift? The time and love put into your present will mean more to the new mom and her child than words can say and they will surely be treasured.

For all you looking for the perfect and may I say “essential” gift for a new mom and her babe, here’s a great place to start. I’ve given you items for all skill levels and interest. Gifts ranging from a basic bib to drool catchers for your baby carrier. A simple, cozy swaddling blanket to a car seat cooler– Yes, I found a car seat cooler! No more hot straps after the car is parked in the sun for babe anymore! All the basics are here. Most of these tutorials give you a great place to start if you want to customize and add your own personal flair! Sew on that ribbon, applique a car on a little boy’s onesie or fabric paint images on a cute pant bottom! It’s all fun and it’s all about baby! In giving a handmade gift you are not only bringing joy to the new family but also finding happiness in the process for yourself as well. So get sewing, get creating, snuggle up to that new baby and have fun!

Thank you so much for this fabulous roundup!
What a fantastic list of tutorials! I just found a great tutorial for making cute little animal hats for babies:
http://mothandsparrow.blogspot.com/2010/10/baby-animal-hats-tutorial-with-pattern.html
I love Shannon! Thanks for including my headband!
WOW! I love all these things! I know what I’ll be doing this afternoon….going through all these posts!!
This is an absolutely amazing list of tutorials! Makes me want to run home to my sewing machine, rather than sit at the desk at work
Looking forward to putting some of these into action this next “baby” season.
Seriously? How am I going to decide which project to do? They are all so fabulous!!!!! Thanks for the line-up (and giveaway!)

What a great collection of ideas! Thanks for putting it together.
Now that the grandbabies are coming fast and furious, this has been a great resource! THanks! maybe do this on a yearly basis to remind us old foggies where the tutes are!
I have a lil 5mos old that would love the doll!
So many wonderful links to look through! Wow!
Great roundup! Definitely have some new projects added to my to do list. Thanks!
Timing is wonderful – I have three new babies due in the next few months and mommas that will appreciate these great ideas, particularly if I will do the work!
My favorite cousin just announced she’s having her first baby! Now I have a long list of pretty things to make her and her new little boy! Thanks!!!
Lots of nice tutorials! I wish I’d had the shirt skirt one months ago–that would make a great pregnancy skirt!
WOW! THANKS! I was just thinking that I needed to make some bloomers to go under the round of jumpers I just made my little one, and the Made Diaper Cover is perfect! The only “problem” is that I now have another list of projects I want to start. ;0)

These are all so great! Now if I only had the time….
This is absolutely amazing! I recently made a nursing cover from an online tutorial. I’m so thankful for all the ladies out there who share their gifts with everyone else. Thanks for this quick handy tutorial guide. I’m adding it to favorites right now.
I love the wrap around onesie! Those were my favorites with my daughter for all of her first year…so much easier!
What a great roundup! It’ll take me days to go through all these fun links.
What a wonderful round-up! Thanks for including me!
So many projects, so little time.
WOW. Simply WOW! Some AMAZING stuff! Thanks for rounding it all up for us!
Beautiful tutorials! Thanks for this list. One thing to include for next time is some nursing-friendly tops and dresses for momma. Purchased nursing clothing is so expensive! But they’re easy to make with thrifted t-shirts or fabric you have lying around in the stash. And great for nursing on the go (maybe in your new, custom-made sling!) without worrying about preserving modesty.
Check out some of these (which I have used with great success, for me and other momma friends). The third one is my new go-to gift for baby showers and mother blessings. http://www.sleepingbaby.net/jan/Baby/shirt.html
http://rowena.typepad.com/rostitchery/2006/05/overlap_nursing.html
and my personal favorite, http://www.rostitchery.com/2006/05/twist_top_with_.html.
There are many more nursing-friendly tops and dress patterns online, and some that you can buy, too, but these are just a few that have worked for me. Thanks for the excellent Baby Shower theme!
Wow…thanks for all the great tutorial links! I have been on the look out because I have another grandchild on the way and need to get some ideas for things to make that are useful!
