From Melanie: I just love perusing blogs, Flickr and Pinterest, looking at what people are making. Doing this, I often take note of trends I see in different areas of the handmade sewing community. Here are a few trends I’ve noticed recently.
Quilting Trend: Pinwheels
I’m seeing pinwheels everywhere! I think they’re a nice challenge for the intermediate to advanced quilter. They look so fresh and pretty with a lovely Spring feel. Clockwise from top left: Pinwheel Baby Quilt tutorial using a charm pack with some additional yardage by paisley’s place quilts; Fresh Modern Bee Block by Blue Elephant Stitches, Pinwheel Pillow using Nature Walk organic fabric by Michelle Engel Bencsko/Cloud9 Fabrics; Sweet and Sour Pinwheel Sampler by Mrs. McPorkchop.
Sewing Trend: Ruffles
Ruffles are big right now. Many of us have been admiring them at Anthropologie, Urban Outfitters and J.Crew. And some of us are making ruffles ourselves! Clockwise from top left: for the littlest girls, an Ivory Chiffon Ruffle Dress from Classy Sassy Girls; Ruffled Pillow made from a man’s t-shirt with an explanation as to how it was done by The Little Moments; Ruffle Shirt Tutorial made with two t-shirts by Tea Rose Home; Ruffled Shower Curtain Tutorial, (gorgeous!) by Elle Apparel for *a little lovely.
Stitch Trend: Cross Stitch
Yes, cross stitch is making a comeback and I love it. Of course, we’re seeing it with today’s fresh colors and motifs, simple and clean. Clockwise from top left: a color gradient, Cross Stitch Sampler by make something; cross stitched hearts on a baby shirt is the Baby Singlet Tutorial by Mummy Crafts; Hoop Travel Bag PDF pattern for your cross stitch project (isn’t that clever!) from The Frosted Pumpkin Stitchery.
Color Trend: Yellow & Gray Quilts
Yellow is a color that quilters usually approach with caution. It can easily dominate a quilt if not used properly. That’s why it’s refreshing seeing it used so much now. I especially love seeing it paired with gray. Clockwise from top left: This classic pattern, Lady of the Lake, looks so fresh and modern in yellows, grays and white by AFriend2; yellow and gray bee block by The Loop Designs; Yes and No quilt with gray text fabric by BeaSpoke Quilts; sophisticated crib quilt, Equilateral Triangles from Carson Converse Studio.
Fabric Trend: Painterly
I’ve noticed a painterly theme in a number of newly released fabrics. Clockwise from top left: Bryant Park by Khristian A Howell for Anthology Fabric; Magnolia Lane by Laura Gunn for Michael Miller; children’s book author Jane Ray for Liberty Fabric; Painting Muji from Nani Iro Basic by Naomi Ito.
