“Everything Old Is New Again” ~ Sewing Trends

“Everything Old Is New Again”– So true, isn’t it? Especially in the world of sewing, I think. Here are some “old as new again” trends I’ve been seeing around the online sewing community.
Sampler Quilts
Many people are working on, or finally finishing up, sampler quilts. Currently, there’s a Farmer’s Wife Sampler Quilt Along going on (find details on the following blogs: Fussy Cut and msmcporkchopquilts) based on the book, The Farmer’s Wife Sampler Quilt. Here is a bit of what I found around the web. Embroidery Embellishment
Embroidery as an embellishment for quilts, clothing and more, or just on hoops or in frames. It’s delicate, pretty and/or intricate. Also, you simply must check out Bari J. Aprons
I think we all still love aprons, don’t you? It seems like we’re still making them. And what I’m seeing a bit more of are 1950s-style half aprons, just like my grandma had. I love looking at the many different things people are up to. I am so in the mood to sew an apron with lots of ruffles.
I’d add the vintage sheet craze to the ‘old is new’ concept!
Yes, I´m very inspired from old fashion and materials, because I have many great old fabrics from my grandma. And I love hand-embroidery.
Oh I love that Posy Sky fabric. Those hand embroideries are so sweet..I just don’t have the patience.

If “old” is hot right now, then call me old! I am working on my first sampler quilt now, and i love the way my son looks in overalls! I wouldn’t have connected the two together, but I think Melanie is spot on!
I really love the sampler quilts you show! each is so unique with its different layour and color scheme! And aprons are defnately a fav of mine. using quilting cottons to make them gives us so many ootions to play with ! i always wear n apron!

I love the way trends keep coming back. I’m especially happy that the “home” based things are so prevalent. Aprons, embroidery…it all makes you feel warm and close to the meaning of making things for people.
I just love those little dresses, they remind me of the ones my mom used to sew for me! That’s one of the main reasons I’m teaching myself to sew: I want to make things for my children, especially dresses for my daughter!!
Edgy has its place, I guess. But, sweet, modest and pretty will always win in the end.

Great post! I’m loving the vintage goodness lately!
How about the low stitch count machine embroidery for the dish towels with day-of-the-week motifs such as Sunbonnet Sue, cats doing daily errands, or roosters, just to name a few. They make great house warming or wedding gifts.
I love the England Swings line of fabrics – just finished a bag with it and will definitely be ordering more to sew some skirts and dresses for my girl!

I agree with the dresses and sampler quilts. I haven’t seen the overall craze but I sure wish the guess overall would come back for women. I love overalls. I just wish I could wear them in public again.

Everything old is new again is totally correct but then I have had a fondness for all these things anyway! I had not given any thought to the sampler quilts though. Love that idea!! You are getting me motivated to make a new apron or a little girls dress. They are all so wonderful!!

I see quilts that I remember seeing in my Grandmother’s house 40 years ago. My mother always says nothing is new, it was done before. My mother is a very smart woman.

It’s fun to see how the same basic items evolve and change over time, flowing and ebbing with the seasons.
I love embroidery, I love that a few designers are selling embroidery patterns that go with their fabric lines!

This is an excellent trend roundup. I love sewing vintage things! I’ve been hunting for original vintage dress patterns for my daughter, but they are always so expensive.
I can’t believe I nearly missed this one. That book looks interesting! And fat quarters are always welcome!

I think that sewing itself (as a mainstream thing) is something old. The fact that people are embracing the “old-ness” rather than trying to distance themselves from it is what is different. People are now using the past and what sewing was, to create what sewing is now

LOVE overalls!! I have boys and love to dress them in overalls, they look so cute!
I have found myself rummaging through old patterns I used to make for my daughter (now 33). They were ruffled and smocked, twirly and layered. The details abounded..pleats, embroidery, pintucks…you name it. I worked for hours to create the “right dress” for Meliss.Then we went through the grunge stage, quick to make up and easy care. I think I have come full circle as we are making dresses for my grandaughter using the 30 year old patterns from McCalls, Vogue and Simplicity…Yeah..I love to smock… Thanks …

Well I think that I am finally back in style LOL! I love all that is in this post. I think overall on little ones are just too cute! I love the old fashion dresses for a daughter and make thema all the time. This was a really cool post!!

Isn’t it always the way. I’ve thought to myself don’t throw out dated clothes or fabric because if you keep it long enough it will come around again.
I’m a gardener and when I was learning my craft my old boss taught me how to grow dahlias, dahlias were a complete no no in the fashionable gardens at that time, but now everybody loves them again.
Sometimes it just takes a fresh pair of eyes and a new approach to appreciate little treasures.

There was a time when I would roll my eyes at my mother anytime she’d want to bring another “vintage” item into the house… Now, I just can’t seem to get enough.

Its so fun to see the little girl dresses! I hope that trend continues. There’s nothing more fun that getting a new dress to twirl around in. And for boys, it seems that there’s never as many patterns or cute clothes for boys so I like seeing the overall designs for the little guys.

I love that there are cycles in crafting just as there are in life. The new modern twists with old favorites are thrilling to me.
I love this trend…particularly since I never stopped loving vintage aprons, dungarees, pinafores and, as my husband affectionately refers to it, my “nana fabric”.
I can’t wait to see what people are creating with the rose and floral fabrics! I have a beautiful toile that has fat Victorian yellow roses on it and I can’t wait to make curtains for my laundry room.

I find myself sewing more vintage inspired patterns lately. My first real vintage is waiting for my to grade up on my sewing table.

I’m in love with aprons! I’ve picked up such fabulous ones thrifting along with making my own. Just found a wonderful handmade gray/yellow/white apron with long spoon pockets in fantastic condition for a dollar.

Wonderful roundup of Old is New again! I like how different styles of embroidery and stitching are making a comeback. It’s often my go-to method for embellishing items. A sampler quilt is a perfect idea for trying out new quilting techniques too. I must give it a try.
Old is new” is great for me since vintage fabrics have always been a hit with me!! I love the sweet little dresses that are coming out too like Shabby Apple makes with a vintage feel.
I love aprons – so useful! My boys grew up in overalls that I sewed. Now I have gone back to embroidering everything that doesn’t move – just like when I was a girl! Yes; everything old is new again
