“Everything Old Is New Again” ~ Sewing Trends
Melanie from A Sewing Journal joins us today for her monthly look at recent sewing trends. You can find Melanie at A Sewing Journal, on Twitter and on Facebook. Today’s post features “old as new” looks… Tell us in the comments: Are you inspired by the past in your sewing? Have you seen any sewing with a vintage vibe that’s “wow-ed” you lately? What do you think about these trends?!

“Everything Old Is New Again”– So true, isn’t it? Especially in the world of sewing, I think. Here are some “old as new again” trends I’ve been seeing around the online sewing community.

Sampler Quilts
Many people are working on, or finally finishing up, sampler quilts. Currently, there’s a Farmer’s Wife Sampler Quilt Along going on (find details on the following blogs: Fussy Cut and msmcporkchopquilts) based on the book, The Farmer’s Wife Sampler Quilt. Here is a bit of what I found around the web. Clockwise from top left: Pieces of Time pieced by Sherron of The Thrifty Gourmet and quilted by Piece N Quilt, Sampler Quilt 2 by make something, FWQAL by s.o.t.a.k handmade, Rainbow Craze quilt top from the Faith Circle of charity quilters by Stitched In Color, FWSQ Blocks 1 – 12 by run amok, Sampler Quilt by Fluffy Sheep Quilting.

Embroidery Embellishment
Embroidery as an embellishment for quilts, clothing and more, or just on hoops or in frames. It’s delicate, pretty and/or intricate. Also, you simply must check out Bari J. Ackerman’s new blog, We Love French Knots {Modern Embroidery Inspired By Grandma}! A few examples: Clockwise from top left: From Issue 3 of Vignette (The Comfort Issue) by Leanne’s House, Market Folk journal cover from the book Cotton Floss by Natalie Lymer of Cinderberry Stitches, Dress Embroidery Pattern by A Little Sweetness, All Dressed Up quilt pattern with embroidery by Bunny Hill Designs.

Aprons
I think we all still love aprons, don’t you? It seems like we’re still making them. And what I’m seeing a bit more of are 1950s-style half aprons, just like my grandma had. Clockwise from top left: 1950s Diner Apron by Terrace Hill, A Fabric Lover’s Apron (made with Anna Maria Horner’s fabulous Loulouthi fabric) with a tutorial here by Maureen Cracknell Handmade, Vintage Inspired Apron #21 by Q is for Quilter, Making Aprons by living the swell life.

Pretty + Old-Fashioned Dresses
Pretty and old-fashioned dresses for girls are popping up around the web. Clockwise from top left: Leah dress by Craftiness is not optional, Little Blossoms by Olabelhe found in Pat Bravo’s Flickr photostream, Children’s Corner Virginia by Piles Of Laundry, summer baby dress from Vintage Style for Kids book made by Saidos da Concha, Vogue 7435 by dream bug.

Overalls
Sweet and old-fashioned overalls for the boys. Awww, aren’t they cute? Clockwise from left: retro coveralls – red car by red pajamas, Overalls for Noah by missymuh, A quick change to the Quick Change Trousers by Anna Maria Horner, Train Man Sun Suit by Pinkdixie.

A stroll through the “Coming Soon” section in the Sew,Mama,Sew! shop features a great variety of “old-is-new” fabric with an emphasis on roses and florals with a vintage feel. Clockwise from top left: Posy Sky from England Swings by Rebekah Merckle, Rose Garden Pink from Treasures by Rachel Ashwell, Sprinkle Dots Pink from Peacock Lane by Violet Craft, Chintz Grey from Paris Apartment by Bari J. Ackerman, Floraburst Pink from Happy Mochi Yum Yum by Monica Solorio-Snow.

There’s one more day to win a complete fat quarter pack of Spring Street by Carolyn Gavin, Crafting a Meaningful Home by Meg Mateo Ilasco or a $25 Gift Certificate to Sew,Mama,Sew! Comment today for your chance to win!

I love looking at the many different things people are up to. I am so in the mood to sew an apron with lots of ruffles.
I’d add the vintage sheet craze to the ‘old is new’ concept!
Yes, I´m very inspired from old fashion and materials, because I have many great old fabrics from my grandma. And I love hand-embroidery.
Oh I love that Posy Sky fabric. Those hand embroideries are so sweet..I just don’t have the patience.
I’d love a chance to win Spring St or the book or the certificate- interesting reading about the trends
I’m on the apron craze, but I have always loved them!
I like vintage look!!! your examples of girls’ dresses and boys’ overall are very very beautiful!|
Those little boy overalls are so cute! If only I could sew clothes…
I would love to win that one too
)
Loving so many of these trends!
I love the photo of the very first sampler quilt = these should definitely come back into vogue!
Each trend displays another delightful project to be done. Thanks for sharing this post, I’ll have a busy summer.
wow lots of inspiration here!
(I quite fancy a sampler quilt myself… if only I had more time in the day…)
I am loving those girls dresses…. I wish it wasn’t so hard to get my girl to wear anything other than jeans and shorts.
A great round up of “old is new.” Just my style!
If “old” is hot right now, then call me old! I am working on my first sampler quilt now, and i love the way my son looks in overalls! I wouldn’t have connected the two together, but I think Melanie is spot on!
I really love the sampler quilts you show! each is so unique with its different layour and color scheme! And aprons are defnately a fav of mine. using quilting cottons to make them gives us so many ootions to play with ! i always wear n apron!
Good post! There is some sewing fun for everyone. Thanks for a chance at the giveaway!
Great post, Melanie! I really like your view on this current trend. So much inspiration! Thanks for featuring my baby dress. Have a great week!
win! me! win! me!
Love these trends, especially the pretty dresses and vintage-inspired fabric!
I love little boys in overalls. So stinkin cute.
Thanks…glad someone knows what is going to be the trend….need all the help I can get
I love the way trends keep coming back. I’m especially happy that the “home” based things are so prevalent. Aprons, embroidery…it all makes you feel warm and close to the meaning of making things for people.
I just love those little dresses, they remind me of the ones my mom used to sew for me! That’s one of the main reasons I’m teaching myself to sew: I want to make things for my children, especially dresses for my daughter!!
Edgy has its place, I guess. But, sweet, modest and pretty will always win in the end.
Really appreciate the monthly trends post by A Sewing Journal!
Thanks for sharing all sorts of neat ideas on your blog and thanks for the chance!
Thanks for the great links and the look at this fun sewing trend!
I love these trend posts! They are always spot on!
Great post! I’m loving the vintage goodness lately!
How about the low stitch count machine embroidery for the dish towels with day-of-the-week motifs such as Sunbonnet Sue, cats doing daily errands, or roosters, just to name a few. They make great house warming or wedding gifts.
I love the England Swings line of fabrics – just finished a bag with it and will definitely be ordering more to sew some skirts and dresses for my girl!
Yes! I love all these things! Now if I could only quilt…
I agree with the dresses and sampler quilts. I haven’t seen the overall craze but I sure wish the guess overall would come back for women. I love overalls. I just wish I could wear them in public again.
Loving all the embroidery…great project to take with me for soccer practises!
Love the aprons and the adorable overalls! Great compilation of old things new!
Oh, I love the aprons. I actually have some of my grandmother’s, including a hand-made little one for my toddler. I’d love to make a few more, though…
Everything old is new again is totally correct but then I have had a fondness for all these things anyway! I had not given any thought to the sampler quilts though. Love that idea!! You are getting me motivated to make a new apron or a little girls dress. They are all so wonderful!!
I’m loving the return of the sampler quilt.
I see quilts that I remember seeing in my Grandmother’s house 40 years ago. My mother always says nothing is new, it was done before. My mother is a very smart woman.
Those overalls are so sweet on little ones!
love vintage and the 50s is one of my fave eras
I ve those old fashioned dresses! Beautiful colloction,
great info-thanks
i am loving the “old is new” feel… especially the embroidery! my mom taught me to embroider when i was a little girl and i still love it
Why should I fight it? I love so many of these trends, and will embrace them enthusiastically!
It’s fun to see how the same basic items evolve and change over time, flowing and ebbing with the seasons.
I love embroidery, I love that a few designers are selling embroidery patterns that go with their fabric lines!
what a great compilation! now if I could just get my hands on that issue of Vignette!
Love these…..I keep thinking I’m more of a modern quilter until I see pics like this and it totally makes me want to go buy some old fashioned fabric….
How fascinating to see the lovely new/old ideas! I particularly enjoy seeing all the embroidery – such lovely work.
These are spot-on. Thanks for the info and links, SMS!
This is an excellent trend roundup. I love sewing vintage things! I’ve been hunting for original vintage dress patterns for my daughter, but they are always so expensive.
I can’t believe I nearly missed this one. That book looks interesting! And fat quarters are always welcome!

I think that sewing itself (as a mainstream thing) is something old. The fact that people are embracing the “old-ness” rather than trying to distance themselves from it is what is different. People are now using the past and what sewing was, to create what sewing is now
Yes, it’s fun to see things come around again!
I love the farmers wife blocks I am seeing all over flickr. I have my eye on that book =)
I love the vintage look. I have some of my grandmothers aprons. And I love the little girl dresses you showed.
I am just loving the sample quilts and have been toying with the idea of picking up the Farmer’s Wife sampler quilt book. Also, the overalls are adorable!
I love Melanie’s blog, and this is a great little roundup of trends! That posy sky fabric is lovely
LOVE overalls!! I have boys and love to dress them in overalls, they look so cute!
I have found myself rummaging through old patterns I used to make for my daughter (now 33). They were ruffled and smocked, twirly and layered. The details abounded..pleats, embroidery, pintucks…you name it. I worked for hours to create the “right dress” for Meliss. Then we went through the grunge stage, quick to make up and easy care. I think I have come full circle as we are making dresses for my grandaughter using the 30 year old patterns from McCalls, Vogue and Simplicity…Yeah..I love to smock… Thanks …
Man, I love overalls on little kids!!
Thanks for a great segment!
those sampler quilts are really pretty
I love “everything old is new again!” Its so fun to see retro stuff come back around with fresh interpretations. Now that I’m getting old, I sure wish someone could make ME fresh and new again!
Loving the throw-back stuff. Can never have enough aprons, in my opinion.
Well I think that I am finally back in style LOL! I love all that is in this post. I think overall on little ones are just too cute! I love the old fashion dresses for a daughter and make thema all the time. This was a really cool post!!
i love all the embroidery designs i see everywhere – we have a long road trip ahead and i’m planning to do a little stitching
Interesting! Thanks for your insight.
Thanks for the shout out! XO,b
Isn’t it always the way. I’ve thought to myself don’t throw out dated clothes or fabric because if you keep it long enough it will come around again.
I’m a gardener and when I was learning my craft my old boss taught me how to grow dahlias, dahlias were a complete no no in the fashionable gardens at that time, but now everybody loves them again.
Sometimes it just takes a fresh pair of eyes and a new approach to appreciate little treasures.
The little girl dresses are adorable
There was a time when I would roll my eyes at my mother anytime she’d want to bring another “vintage” item into the house… Now, I just can’t seem to get enough.
What a great post about sewing trends. I particularly enjoyed the sections on dresses and embroidery.
So true! Old is new again
Love the embroidery trend….so cute!
I was just thinking this – old is the new new, love retro, love vintage and love your post
Oh! I love vintage fabrics and clothing! It never gets old!
I love the combination of embroidery with quilting.
All those things are near and dear to my heart! So good to see the “old” crafts and classic clothing and patterns come back.
The “Everything New Is Old Again” post is so sweet and inspiring. I love some of the “Coming Soon” fabrics…so many ideas are popping up.
Its so fun to see the little girl dresses! I hope that trend continues. There’s nothing more fun that getting a new dress to twirl around in. And for boys, it seems that there’s never as many patterns or cute clothes for boys so I like seeing the overall designs for the little guys.
I LOVE the old is new stuff! I’m in love with the look of embroidery even though I can’t do it and I LOVE the new look on the old school dresses. very cute project featured.
I love the posts on sewing trends/forecasts. Keep em coming!
Thanks for all the links on aprons, I love them and have been wanting to make another for quite a while. Now I have added inspiration!
Loving this “trend”, but for me the classic look will NEVER be out of style!
Love the Little Blossoms dress….the kind of dress my daughter used to wear (she’s 17 now)and I used to love to make for her. Would love to win any of these great prizes! Thanks!
I’m crazy about the samplers quilts. I’d love to make one of those for my own house.
I just love the old-fashioned dresses for little girls…it’s so much better than the prosti-tot look being sold in most department stores.
I love revitalising old items into new works of art and love looking at others creations – so inspiring.
I love that there are cycles in crafting just as there are in life. The new modern twists with old favorites are thrilling to me.
I love this trend…particularly since I never stopped loving vintage aprons, dungarees, pinafores and, as my husband affectionately refers to it, my “nana fabric”.
I can’t wait to see what people are creating with the rose and floral fabrics! I have a beautiful toile that has fat Victorian yellow roses on it and I can’t wait to make curtains for my laundry room.
would love to win!
Very cute fabrics!
I love seeing the trends from the web. It is so sweet that the old techniques and styles are coming back.
I love the embroidery! And I will make myself an apron this summer. I must! Ah, I wish my girl was small enough to make those dresses for!
Enjoyed this post on current trends. one of my first quilts was a sampler. good way to learn new techniques and keep things from getting boring. thanks.
I’m LOVING this trend. Thanks for the inspiration
I want to make them all!!!!! Such sweet quilts and little girls dresses.
So true! The embroidery is everywhere! I’m loving those sweet dresses, too!
love it!
Now I want to make some overalls!
I find myself sewing more vintage inspired patterns lately. My first real vintage is waiting for my to grade up on my sewing table.
I especially love the sampler quilt 2 and the kids clothes. Those overalls are adorable!
I think this is a trend I really love!
Predictions seem to be right on… I do like the embroidery examples shown.
If I embroider a floral apron for myself, would that be overkill, or just adorable?
The embroidery is SO CUTE!!! This could be a fun project for Kids!
I loooove the little dress embroidery and dresses. There are so many adorable “vintage” looking things. It makes me want to sew and be crafty all day long.
I love overalls for kids. And another sampler quilt along is being hosted by Leila at her blog: http://sewnbyleila.blogspot.com/p/skill-builder-sampler.html.
This is a great round up – thank you. Also very chuffed to see my daughters’s dress included!!
I’m in love with aprons! I’ve picked up such fabulous ones thrifting along with making my own. Just found a wonderful handmade gray/yellow/white apron with long spoon pockets in fantastic condition for a dollar.
I love this trend. Your collection really takes me back to a simpler time. Probably why these nostalgic pieces are trendy again! I do hope that overalls for “big girls” come back
Thanks for including my 50′s Diner Apron in your piece.
i love this trend! vintage rocks!
Wonderful roundup of Old is New again! I like how different styles of embroidery and stitching are making a comeback. It’s often my go-to method for embellishing items. A sampler quilt is a perfect idea for trying out new quilting techniques too. I must give it a try.
Old is new” is great for me since vintage fabrics have always been a hit with me!! I love the sweet little dresses that are coming out too like Shabby Apple makes with a vintage feel.
I love aprons – so useful! My boys grew up in overalls that I sewed. Now I have gone back to embroidering everything that doesn’t move – just like when I was a girl! Yes; everything old is new again
)
All the “old” stuff brings back my childhood! Thanks for the opportunity.
I have a sampler quilt that needs to have the quilting(by hand)finished. Because it is all by hand many other machine quilts have been finished.
I’m loving the return of embroidery. No one in my latest bee knows it, but all their blocks are going to have some!
I draw the line a dressing up in my original 80s clothes!
What’s not to love about something sweet? Old doesn’t mean obsolete!
Thanks for including my apron! I am loving these overalls — I need a baby boy to sew for!
Love how all of the vintagey fabrics are coming back into fashion again.
What’s not to like about vintage goodies! Some of my favourite vintage things – doilys, tablecloths and teapots….
I love turning old into new. there are so many things that one can do. I was just given a large box of vintage cottons and I am beside myself with joy!!!
