It has been a long time since we’ve had a Free Fabric Friday. (So much to do, so few days of the week.) The amazing new fabric continues to roll in. A few examples:

What a variety of styles and base cloths! We’re looking forward to expanding our selection of knits, corduroy, voile, poplin and more in the coming months.
So tell us, have you been branching out into different types of fabric? Why or why not? If you have suggestions for tutorials you’d like to see that would help you with the various substrates, let us know. We’ll randomly select eight people to win one yard of fabric.

I’ve dabbled a bit with corduroy, but would love more tutorials on things to make with it, such as bags, kids/baby clothes and/or softies. Hugs Naomi
I love all the different types of fabrics. Especially decor weights for purses/bags. I would like a tutorial that uses cotton voile. I have wanted to work with the lightweight fabric but haven’t yet.
I pretty much stick with quilting cotton and poly/cotton broadcloth for smocking. But I have some lovely voile that I want to try but am a bit afraid of! I sew more now with knit than I used to and am really loving it.
I just started working a bit more with voile, cord and some heavier vintage fabrics (I believe are cotton). I’m tempted to work with silks and even some polyester chiffon fabrics as I love the flowy, billowy blouses and dresses that everyone’s wearing but am a bit scared of the delicate nature and slippery-ness of the those fabrics.

I usually stick to Cotton because I had bad expierience with anything thicker! Broken needles, puckering etc. If you could show how to sew thicker fabric with a small project/tutorial, that would be great!

Lately I wanted to try to sew with laminates, but I heard that you need a special sewing machine foot which does not stick to the laminate. What if I can’t get such a special foot? I have a very simple sewing machine and there are only few sewing feet available for it.
I had the same problem with heavier fabrics not cooperating. But after taking my sewing machine in for an overhaul, the shop was able to suggest a better needle, so I decided to try some corduroy. It worked great! I had about 10 yards of light gray corduroy, so I am making reusable shopping totes with it since it’s nice and durable…and unlike the ones you buy from the store, these won’t fall apart when you toss them into the washing machine!
We don’t carry laminates, but we used to sell a lot of oilcloth. Most of the same suggestions apply. Check out these tips:

I’ve tried voile once, but it didn’t come out as expected. It tends to pucker a lot. Maybe my technique was wrong. So tutorials on how to sew with voile or even corduroy would be awesome! Thank Sew Mama Sew!
Trying to sew with knits. I have seen a few skirts that were knit but way too expensive, so I am going to make one. Praying it turns out okay.
I managed to swap some old medal ribbons for some beautiful velvet at a vintage fabric store, I have been making some purses working out how to deal with the fraying situations during construction!!!
I mainly use quilting cotton but some heavier weights for bags

I recently made a beach bag with an oilcloth/ waterresistant lining. It turned out nicely although I found you have to sew and cut well because this fabric does not stretch at all…
I primarily use upholstery fabric for my bags and cotton or silk for interial of the bags.
I don’t know if I have a proper suggestion for a tutorial, but I’d love a tutorial on using bag bottoms. I bought some of it and don’t know how to use it. Do I sew in, do I glue it onto the bag?
Only been quilting for just under a year so stick to quilting cotton. I wouldn’t know what to do with voile, denim or corduroy so would be interesting to see how other people use them. Linda
I am cutting up old clothes so some of those have elastane in them. Hope it works in a quilt!
I’ve sewed with tulle and laminiated cotton (not at the same time, but ….) I have oil cloth waiting for the right project ( and a little more courage) and then just with regular fabrics but not too shabby since I have only been sewing for <2 years. I think so, don't you?
I have tried working with cotton velour, it is so stretchy and is difficult to work with, but makes cute bunnies! I like wool felt because you don’t have to worry about seams. I always enjoy sewing with cottons!
I would dearly love to be able to sew stretch fabrics. I don’t have a serger and I’m unlikely to get one for a while, but there are so many projects I want to do with jersey. A tutorial showing me how to sew jersey on a regular sewing machine without getting either a solid mess of zigzag stitching or a seam that frays (I swing between one extreme and the other, I can’t seem to be able to get a seem that stops fraying and isn’t solid satin stitching) would be a lifesaver (ok, a sanity saver). Thanks.

I love working with all kinds of fabrics. There are lots great patterns in the cotton/quilting arena that I’d love to see merge into other areas. So glad Amy Butler and other are branching out. Can’t wait to see her Rayons in person.
And for those having a hard time with heavy and/super lightweight fabrics, sometimes a simple change of your needle and adjusting the thread tension makes all the difference in the world. I can also adjust the pressure of my presser foot… great for bulky fabrics.
I’d love to try some voile and I haven’t used corduroy for years!
I would like to learn any easy way to sew eyelet over a lining in a skirt so that both layers have their own drape and they don’t look all glommed together.

I’m finally taking the plunge and attempting to sew jersey, despite my lack of a serger! Last time I tried it was a total disaster, but I think I may have more patience this time!
I wish I could stop the fabric from rolling in on itself when I’m trying to sew it.. It drives me mad!
Some tutorials for making summer clothes for in voile and/or lawn for young girls would be appreciated. The trouble is, that most summer clothes are very billowy, and as she is a bit on the scrawny side, she tends to get lost in billows and folds…
I’ve done a few reasonably successful rounds with garment-sewing before coming back to happy, well-behaved cottons. So I am happy to see pretty prints in different substrates (especially knits)…just wish they weren’t so pricey!
I’m trying to work our applique with rip stop nylon, so that I can embellish some of my re-usable bags and still leave them stuffable!
I’ve been wanting to try some rayon challis, I had a dress as a kid made from it that draped really nicely, but it seems like it could be a little fiddly to sew.
I love to sew with cotton jersey’s but hate the slippery poly-ones, but there are some available with great patterns on it. So you may have some advice how to work with slippery fabrics.

I’ve just started working with light weight sheer fabrics for dress making and although the end results look ok I know it could be better. Some tutorials would be great and might help me to to reduce the number of garments waiting to be unpicked as they are not quite wearable.
I love working with denim. I really like the feel of it when its lost the stiffness and is old and faded. There should be more denim quilt patterns.
Apart from that give me solids and batiks any day!
I’ve been experimenting lots recently… oilcloth, chalk cloth, canvas weight cotton, but the fabric I have found the hardest to use is jersey knit.
As of now I’m only using woven cotton fabrics…will try knit soon!
I’ve been doing corduroy pants for the little one and it’s been great. I’ve also been using vintage cottons that were told to me as being “Winter Cotton’s”? They are great, easy to sew and look nice with no puckering. I’d like to know how to use cotton voile, and also how to add lace details. Thanks.

I’m absolutely loving playing around with bright batik fabrics from Asia and some bright African prints. I have always been drawn to bright colors but these open up so many more options.
I am new to sewing and have used mostly quilt weight cottons. However, I have started a project using denim and I accidentally ordered (and subsequently used) voile in a baby quilt. I’d like to branch out a bit more!

i just bought some laminate fabric. I’m going to make a rain hat. There are not many cute ones availeable and Amy Butler has such cute fabrics available along with instructions for sewing on this fabric.

Love those Alexander Henry prints (as usual). I really haven’t used anything but quilting cottons. I’m pretty new at sewing, and I am also on a major budget, so most other base cloths aren’t very accessible to me.

I tried a silk-ish blend a few months ago and I don’t know if I’ll try it again! Haha It frayed like crazy, but maybe now that I know that I can think of ways to prevent it a little more. I just cut every pattern out with pinking shears and that seemed to help a little bit.
I have always used cotton fabric for my quilts but I decided to use flannel for the back of my daughters quilt to make it feel cozy. I love the new fabrics you have online.

I picked up some knit and am excited to make something comfy with it, but right now I’m trying to read up on how to sew it so that it doesn’t get that shrivelly look along the stitching.
I bought some corduroy, but its still sitting in the closet. I’m afraid to use it. Guess I need to put on my big girl pants and just go for it! LOL
I have tried sewing on all of these fabrics and there are definitely some “tricks” to learn. I think some of my problems have been using the wrong needle and not knowing how to press/iron correctly. Perhaps some ironing hints (or don’t ever in the case of laminates!) might be also useful. Thanks for a great giveaway too!
I have branched out. Recently I tried using corduroy on an applique of a fire truck. it turned out AWESOME! Quilter’s Cotton used to be my only fabric, but I now sew with minky on a nearly daily basis!

I have been dabbling with mixing linens and other fabrics. My practice piece was a little mug rug using linen and Kaffee Fasset fabrics. I love the look. The new fabrics you posted would certainly lend themselves to that type of a mix. I am thinking a beautiful iPad case witH linen and Happy Mochi Yum Yum or Paris Apartment accents. BEST. Accessorized teacher in town! I think it is time for me to look into developing some tutorials, as a veteran special Ed teacher I have spent my life task analyzing and writing directions. Maybe this post is sparking a new career…thanks..sew on everyone….
I do try different fabrics sometimes…rarely…linen or knit or chenille…mostly I stick with cotton.

I have tried a couple things with knits recently. It scared me at first, but its not too bad!
I love the micro coudoroy for Fall and Winter dresses! I cant wait to smock some cute dresses for my littlest one year old.
I am also on the hunt for some thick colorful knit to work with. I love the look and feel of the fabric but I get intimidated by the different ways to sew it! I would love to make baby gifts for friends or cute dresses for my tweens
I would love to see more projects that incorporate flannels. I love the extra cosiness they provide for the back side of lap quilts, but I always struggle to find beautiful prints that coordinate with the quilt front. Thanks!
I’ve enjoyed sewing clothes with knits and linens lately. They are cool and flexible and surprisingly easy to sew with!
I have been sewing for a little while now, but mostly simple handbags and skirts, etc. I just recently have attempted quilting because I have a lot of new babies coming into my life. So, I thought it would be genius to incorporate various textures (corduroy, satins, minky, etc.) in the quilts to keep baby entertained. But, I have found this approach to be exponentially more frustrating than rewarding. I would LOVE a tip or two on using multiple fabrics in one project or my babies will not be enjoying the texture aesthetic any time soon!

I’ve just ventured out to sewing with voile… and I love it! It’s not that I was afraid of working with this type of fabric, but I did not really have a project in mind to sew. Since then I’ve whipped up a few “practice” tunics, but am dying to get my hands on some the nice quality voiles that are being offerend now.
I have worked with quilting cotton (fat quarters and such) the most. Mainly because I am new to sewing. I have worked with other fabric like fleece, corduroy and jersey knit. I do a little costuming so I have worked with silk like material, linen and taffeta. There are probably some other fabrics I have worked with, but I can remember the names. I would love to work with laminated cotton. Any tutorial on how to work with laminated cotton or just any tutorial would be fine. I love sewing and would like to learn as much as I can. Sewing is my happy place.

I’m a crazy quilter, so I love all sorts of different fabrics! My favorites are cottons, silk, and brocade. I’ve also done bags with upholstry fabrics, but I’ve had a hard time with that type of fabric (seam allowances and such).

I’m excited for more options of voile and lawn fabrics. They are so soft and drapey and fun to work with! Also, I’m really intrgued that Soul Blossoms is available in rayon now. I’ve never worked with rayon, so I’m not sure how it’s different from any of the other options out there.
There are others who have tutorials on working with knits, but I think more could be said. I’ve been working with knits lately and still sometimes have questions that have been unanswered. Also, I’ve got a shirt pattern that I’m anxious to try but am just waiting for the right voile or lawn fabric.

Sorry to double-post. I really am NOT trying to sneak a second entry here, but I thought of something else I’d like to read about: sewing with more formal fabrics. One of these days I know I’m going to be asked to make a bridesmaid dress or something. I’d like to see someone talk about the special considerations when sewing formal wear.
I’m mostly sewing cotton fabric. I made a couple new summer tops using a lightweight polyester fabric I found at an estate sale. The salvege said it was made in 1970. So, I guess I have a couple vintage tops.
I’m a little afraid of knits. Maybe wary is a better word. I know I need a different needle (I even have it!) but I haven’t attempted it yet. I’ve sewn slippery fabrics (when I didn’t know any better, and then later on when I did) and they were fine, and I have some voile that I’m making into a skirt as soon as I get a minute, and I’ve sewn denim, and all this mention of courderoy is getting me interested, but for some reason it’s the stretchy knits that worry me.
i’ve worked with many types of fabric and tend to gravitate towards quilting cottons. i like the selection and feel of those fabrics. i have, however, been branching out into using lots of solids for my quilts. i like the bold look of them!

I love corduroy! it has been years since I made anything out of it but it use to be the only thing I used. Once I was multi tasking by doing laundry and cutting fabric and I accidently cut my husbands favorite pair of cords :0 Ten years later and he still reminds me of it!
I would love some ideas on using voile. It’s so intriguing! And that Happy Mochi Yum Yum fabric line is amazing! I love that you have some Kona paired with it.

I’ve been attempting to work with swimsuit fabric. Much frustration ensues. The fabric just gets sucked into the machine! I would love to learn how to make bathing caps.
I tried sewing vinyl last weekend as I was trying to make a changing pad for my sister. It was too difficult to sew and keep paper underneath and to the side of the presser foot so it wouldn’t stick. I ended up buying some other treated fabric that has worked great!
I have just recently returned to sewing and am so in love with all of the new fabrics and vintage repros. Love love love this site!
I mostly have quilting cottons in my stash, which is fine I guess for most things. But I’ve used a few heavier fabrics (corduroy, canvas) for bags and I’d like to learn more about how to use fabrics that are better suited to making clothing, in particular women’s dresses and girls’ dresses and also tops. I’m not sure which types of fabric I should buy for those sorts of things, honestly.
I’m about to try my hand at velvet this weekend, and I’m looking for a laminate or oilcloth to make a raincoat for my daughter. I made a couple of corduroy dresses for my daughter this winter and it was very easy to sew with, just like cotton really. Thanks for the oilcloth tips!
I have some lawn and voile fabrics I’m planning for summer skirts (hopefully to be done this weekend). I’d love to see some tutorials for adult wearables made from heavier fabrics for fall, (not bags or purses – even though I love all bags!). I’m thinking maybe a jacket and/or skirt (maybe even made out of corduroy like other posters have mentioned). I think the key to working with corduroy is using a new jeans needle in your sewing machine.
I’m such a wuss. I stick with quilting type cotton. I tried to make a dress from some slinky knit fabric and it almost drove me to the brink of insanity. I do branch out as far as linen blends and decorator weight fabric. HA!!! So like my personality.
With quilting, I’ve stayed pretty true to cotton calicoes, but after joining a bee I decided to put some of the polycottons I’ve been given to use. I’m working up practice blocks in that, then eventually will have enough blocks for a picnic quilt. My machine is from the 70s, no fancy bells and whistles, so I’ve been nervous about trying knits. It does fine with canvas, though, and I remember my mom even working with vinyl. It’s all about the needle and the weight of the thread. Seems most fabric counter workers are more than happy to help you out on those types of decisions.

i love jersey knit but that’s about as far as i’ve branched out….wait, i did make bridal party sashes out of satin taffeta, that was fun!! love the giveaway!!!
I have noticed in the last year my color choices have really been different…and I am leaning more toward modern but that could be because I “found” them via blogs. As far as tutorials…I love the small projects. Wall Hangings especially sound good.

I haven’t sewn in 20 years. My children are now old enough so that I can sit and not be interrupted. I have even started a making chic diaper bags to give to new mommies at our church! It has been so much fun getting back into this beautiful art!
I want to try smocking on corduroy. My mom said that my great-grandmother used to make the prettiest pillows that way.
I like to work with some utilitarian fabrics and mix them up with pretty cottons. The simplicity tends to compliment the beautiful cottons available.

Yes. My very first quilt was corduroy, way back when I was in high school. Recently I made a new granddaughter a satin quilt and another granddaughter one that included dotted swiss. Oh, and a pillow top quilt from men’s ties and a little crazy quilt that included some velvet, satin, and lace–not my fave…too many weights. I’d love to win some fabric!!!

I would love some more tips on how to work with knits – they always give me so much trouble! I also want to make something with seersucker.
I’ve tried knits with no success. My machine skips stitches for some reason. I recently made a new patio umbrella with outdoor canvas and it turned out really well.
Yes I have been branching out a bit but more in terms of the fabric designs not the fabric itself. Although I have used some heavier — probably deco weight a bit. Mainly because I liked the pattern. But it doesn’t give me the antiquey puffed up look I like after quilting and washing

I’ve been sewing with voile and lawn and had some hiccups at first because I was using the wrong needle size, but I must confess I love it now and the drape you get from lighter weight fabrics is great for garments. I’m excited to see you expand your garment weight fabric offerings.

I finally started using jersey knit to sew with. I bought a ball point needle and it makes it much easier. I’m liking it! I’ll have to branch out to other types of fabric too.
It is not so much a type of fabric, but I want more ideas on what to do with my finished hand embroidery panels. You can only have so many “samplers” on the wall!
I made a little A-line dress for my daughter with corduroy and had no problems. I would love to make something with that Soul Blossoms corduroy. I’m also thinking about trying some projects with laminates.

Weights other than quilting cottons make me a little nervous. With the right pattern and instruction, though, I think I could handle it.
I have been trying to use more knits, especially so I can reuse tshirts I would otherwise be throwing out, and would like to see tutorials on the basics of working with knit. Nothing is going horribly wrong with what I’m doing, but I’m sure I’m not doing it the “right” way either
I bought a bunch of swimsuit fabric. Who can resist when it is $10 per yard for a super wide yard? I wish all fabric was that wide… I am going to try my hand at a free pattern from burdastyle. I would love to see more swim tutorials.
Corduroy would be fun for making bags, any tips would definitely be helpful! I want to try silk as well but fear the slippery factor !!

I’ve started sewing with knits more. I still don’t have it perfected but I’m not intimidated by them.
I have always used a wide variety of fabrics, from the thinnest jersey knit to the heaviest canvas duck cloth. I do stick to natural fibers, however, as they simply feel better to work with and to wear.
I personally love to work with knits, but I do know that many, many sewing mamas fear these stretchy fabrics. I’d love to see a well done, comprehensive tutorial on sewing with knit fabrics that I could link to for others.
I’ll chime in on the desire to voile based tutorials. I feel like I’ve only seen the voile used in lightweight scarves – what else can I do with it? Thanks!
i love voile and lawn for summer items but sometimes i’m not quite sure what to do with them because they are so sheer. i’d like to venture into sundresses but i don’t know if lining/underlining would take away from the lovely light qualities that make voile/lawn so wonderful in the first place.

I’m been so scared of Linen.. but I’m starting to work with it more and more. Its a wonderfully cool fabric but so freaking expensive. I had 8 yards of linen that took me over a year to get up the courage to cut!

I’ve been trying stretch knits this summer. With some success and some duds. I really want to sew with it and have awesome clothes that fit me well. I’d love some tutorials on getting a good fit using patterns.
I mostly sew with cottons as I’m not a huge fan of wearing synthetics and therefore don’t buy a lot of them, but I love the look of mixing textiles for accessories (purses, headbands, etc.) and should probably be more adventurous in my fabric selections….
I’ve only used cottons so far as I am really new to quilting. I love reading on how to use other fabrics as someday I hope to be good enough at this to give them a try.
I am fairly new to sewing and at first, would buy any and all fabrics that came on sale at my local fabric store, but then, I started to realize, that as a newbie, so fabrics sewed up more easily than others. So I stopped trying other fabrics until I could at least sew a fairly straight line.
Now, with a little more experience under my belt, I am just beginning to try some new fabrics and textures. I have two nieces and I am so happy to see corduroy has come a long way since the 60s!

Well, I am new to sewing and have pretty much stuck to basic cotton fabrics that are easy to work with. I am starting to venture into new types like fabrics with stretch and slinky fabrics. Last week I even tried a project with iron-on vinyl (didn’t quite turn out like I wanted, but good enough for a first try!)

I love to try new and different fabrics. I read in a blog on a smaller project they used tissue paper top and bottom of the laminate fabric with a slightly larger stitch so it would tear away easier, but have not tried this yet:)

I second the calls for tutorials on voile and corduroy. There’s so many awesome prints on these but I’m afraid to buy any before I have some sense of how to work with them.
I recently backed a pieced cotton baby quilt with fleece, and was a little nervous about it stretching or slipping around on my sewing machine, but I didn’t have time to do it by hand. My fretting was for naught; it turned out just fine, and I’ll try it again next time I want to make an extra cozy throw.
I’m still fairly new to sewing and am terrified of other fabrics. I’m tempted by corduroy and will probably try that this winter. I’m just proud of myself that I’m putting flannel backing on a baby quilt…wish me luck.

I live in Florida and use cotton almost exclusively. When it’s 95 outside with 90% humidity, you just sweat. The cotton helps you cool off when you get inside.

I have just started making shopping bags and purses. Most of them call for interfacing, but do not specify weight. I have found this critical for certain styles. I have some lovely cotton voile and some really gorgeous wool jersey. Both of which are intimidating me right now. I hear that super lightweight fabrics can be harder to manage and I’ve never had great luck with knits which makes me loath to cut into this beautiful (and expensive) jersey.

I’m a big wuss. I stick with cottons mostly. I sometimes venture into linen blends or decorator weight fabric. HA! It’s just a sign of my personality – very cautious. I would like to give that courderoy a shot. I think it would make a really cute bag. I agree with Isabelle – more tutes on sewing with knits.
I have been sewing more with knits recently because my three-year-old daughter prefers them (they move with her and they are easier to get on and off as she is learning to dress herself). There seems to be tons of skirt and pant patterns and tutorials out there that can be used for knits but not so many tops…would love to see some simple knit T-shirt tutorials. It’s great to start with basics and then I could modify and or embellish if I have the time/inclination.

I love working with knits now! When Patty Young & Oliver & S brought out their lines, I was hooked! I even finally bought a serger which I love. It’s a wholr new world of sewing for me!

I’d like to work with voile or lawn, to make some pajamas. And decor weight fabrics as well, for purses.
I would like to use some sheer kind of synthetic fabric to cover a horrible, ugly ceiling at our house. Kind of drape it from the ceiling. Typically I try to stick with fabrics that aren’t too stretchy as I’m a bit of a novice seamstress. I have sewn vinyl into a number of projects though. Sometimes I pick up fabrics at thrift store and use them for things like dog beds or other little bags or holders I need around the house.
I did my first (very small) sewing project with fake leather recently. It actually went better than I had expected.

Wow! I love reading all the responses to this. Makes me feel so much better about also being a ‘cautious’ sewer. I tend to still with the decor fabrics and cottons as well, just for bags and clothing for my daughter. But this year she wants to be a princess for Halloween and that requires tulle and satin, yikes!!! Would love to see some tutorials on working with those two fabrics. I have no experience with that.

I know there’s going to be some hate, but I just bought a bunch of polyester print fabric, because the colors were so vibrant and I need to make some work skirts that I can take on the road that won’t wrinkle and can be washed in the tub quickly.
I also have a lot of upholstery fabric sample books that I want to play with and make something patchworky out of.

I like to incorporate thrift store fabric finds into the bags, so I have ended up with lots of different types of upholstery fabrics. The bags end up being sturdy and a combination of prints and solids. Best recent find was some high-quality, light-weight denim; looks fantastic with almost any other print I have in my stash.

I’d love to learn how to use corduroy. I got a pattern to make pants for my toddler but I’m too scared to try anything but cotton! I don’t know what type of needle/thread/stitch/tension to use to avoid ruining the project or breaking a sewing machine (once I get a new one…broke the one I had and it’s not repairable)

After working with knits, I’ve branched out into that unusual fabric – woven cotton! It’s a challenge and a bit scary because it doesn’t have the give that knits have, and I’ve been working on fitted garments so it’s been a nice challenge but it also means that I have to be more precise in my measurements. I’ve also made swimsuits for myself and my children, and swimsuit fabric turned out to be quite easy to use – even easier than regular knits.

I started backing my quilts with different fabrics, mostly flannel and fleece, but sometimes velvet or other ’soft and fuzzy’ just depending on what I have. With the fleece I’ve been eliminating the batting to minimize bulk.
I usually stick with my tried and true cotton as well as decorator weight, and have dabbled in knits. I know there’s a lot of knit tutorials, but I still feel like I need to know more!
I admit it…I’m a fabric coward! Only cotton for me in my quilts. I have made a tote using outdoor fabric though!
I’ve been trying to work with knits (specifically bamboo rayon knit) and I don’t have a serger, so it’s been a challenge. I was trying to sew them with my Singer Simple and some iron-on interfacing, and while I eventually got it to work, I hated picking the bits of paper interfacing out of the stitches afterward! I ended up temporarily giving up on it.
I recently upgraded to a Janome DC2011 and it is AWESOME! I figured out yesterday that using the walking foot on knits works pretty well and I think I can skip using the interfacing. I’m going to give knits another try!
I’d love to play with lawn fabric. Just wish it wasn’t so expensive…
I just bought some jersey knit and I’m going to make a skirt out of it.
I recently bought some baby-wale corduroy, but I haven’t cut into it yet. I think it’s great to see so many new types of fabric made available. I’m anxious to try voile, too!
I have been using home decor fabric lately, it works great for a purse with more body and shape.

Having a new baby has meant branching out into laminated cottons! There are so many cute new patterns to choose from for diaper changing pads and chair covers.
I am often scared to branch out to fabrics I haven’t used before, but if I find a great tutorial I think I would be more willing to.

I’m stretching my sewing skills by trying out garment fabrics instead of just quilting cottons… things that stretch… a bit scary, but hopefully worth trying out in the long run!
Ihave tried a bit of corduroy, linen and flannel. I think I still like cotton the best for quilts though. The corduroy went nicely for a bag and i would considering doing that again (although I still like canvas for bags).
I haven’t tried any new fabrics, but I love the new stuff coming in!

I’ve worked with many different types of fabric. I’ve tried the Michael Miller knits, I’ve worked with corduroy, poplin etc. Rayon is a bit more slippery but not too difficult. I despise working with minkee and with satin. That said, I will if I need too. After I comment I’m going to check out the Soul Blossoms Rayon. I’m interested in that!
I would love to see more tutorials for knits as well. I’d love to try sewing with it more, but am too afraid of messing it up!
For quilting I use cotton, but when I make smaller projects I
incorporate whatever works! Felted wool is a favourite.

I use home decorating fabric for purses but have been very curious about and wanting to try others. What stops me is sometimes I have no idea what these fabrics are (voile for instance).

I’ve been playing with corduroy as a durable fabric for clothes for my little one, but I’ve been seriously considering trying some knit fabric to make something comfortable for myself. I’d LOVE to see a maxi-dress tutorial using a jersey knit.
I have done some work with Levi, but mostly cotton and cotton blends. Sometimes I will embelish clothing with lace. But I do need to branch out. I was given some cordoroy and knit that I would like to find something to do with it. I have 3 boys, so it can be challenging to find cute things to do with fabric, that they like also.
My fabric buying money is a little skimpy these days. To satisfy the urge, I’ve been going to yard sales. I find vintage sheets and tshirts for a bargain. I clean them and start sewing when the mood strikes me. For bigger projects, I have to save up for fabric.
I played around with knits and I have loved them. Come fall I really want to use corduroy is some projects.
I haven’t really used much of anything except cotton because I am primarily a quilter. I have a few other types of fabric, but they mostly end up sitting in my stash forever. Someday I’ll branch out, but for now, I’m a 100% cotton gal!

I have been sticking with the same basic materials but I am itching to get into sewing with faux leather for handles and such. Just need to find some that I want to sew up!
I love a lot of the tutorials you’ve had for clothing lately but how shall I say this? They all would only look good on non-curvy women. There is some really cute tutorials but I find them they would like pregnancy clothes on me due to my hour-glass figure. Tunics and tops that flair out at the chest are cute but do not flatter figures with curves.
Perhaps you could offer tutorials for women that are not a size 8 and deal with how to tailor things in (like at the waist and such) to make them flattering? Or how to create tops with empire waists.
But I have to say that I love the Floraburst Blue Happy Mochi Yum Yum fabric. So delicious!

I’ve pretty much stayed within my comfort zone with quilting cottons & home decor fabric. Deep down inside though, I’d love to branch out in other fabric areas. Like knits, oil cloth, and corduroy.
I’ve been using a lot of cotton prints, have used corduroy, denim, rayon, and recently bought some linen to experiment with, but have done some knits as well–though I have to figure out how my machine (a Shark) can do a better job on those knits…… so I’d love to see more tutorials on sewing with knits as well.
jersey knits. I just got “Growing up Sew Liberated” and found some unused t-shirts here at home and thrift store. I hope to venture into sewing with the knits next week.
I use velvet and corduroy sometimes, and I made a whole quilt of denim. The new fabrics look really nice!
I’m learning how to sew, and I’ve mostly stayed with cotton, although I have a water-resistant polyester that I’m going to try to use on the underside of a picnic blanket I’m making. Hopefully it will go well!

I have sewn quite a bit, more before I had children, but I am starting to pick it up again. I really don’t have much experience with knits though and would love to see some tutorials on them:)
As a quilter I really do prefer all cotton in the quilting weight, so that is what I prefer to make my girls skirts and dresses with too, unless it is some denim. BUt I have really been branching out in patterns, tryng new things, and that has been fun.
I have been using voile and double gauze a lot this summer, and I just got a serger and a bunch of knits, so I’m looking forward to learning new things. I’d love more tutorials on knits or on serging!

I mostly sew skirts and dresses for my daughter and I did try some satiny fabric for a Tinkerbell costume recently. I will be making a jumper with corduroy for her soon. I’m interested in how to sew lighter fabrics like voile and how to sew without using a serger.

Knits! Most items off the rack I have to hem to fit, so I usually only buy things that are sturdy to hem. And then I found this awesome knit, long, charcoal grey, maxi skirt at old navy. Which needs to be hemmed. I bought some cheapo knit remnants to practice on. Love these colors!

The corduroy is fantastic. It reminds me of a pair of pants I had as a child in the late sixties. I mainly sew with cotton but I would love to make something out of viole.

I have sewn with all of these types of fabrics, mostly for clothing. Sometimes cotton is just not the right type of fabric for clothing so I love that the great designers (like Amy Butler)have their prints on rayon, corduroy, knits, etc.

I have been using alot of corduroy for baby shoes and bookbags. I want to try oilcloth but i am a little scared since I have never worked with it. I found out the hard way not to iron outdoor fabric. LOL My husband wanted a cover for his generator so I made one with a velcro closure on the front for easy on and off. Well When making one of the strips for the velcro, not thinking and out of habit I turned it and pressed it. LOL Now I have got to find something to clean all the blue off my iron. Lesson learned. I have quite a few friends with girls and have been using alot of knit for skirts, sleep wear, and cute little dresses. My boys are about to get some nice knit pj’s and boxer briefs. I would love to see how to properly use the oil cloth and I wasn’t sure if I need to take any extra steps while using it. I heart sewmamasew!! Awesome giveaway!!
I have used some voile. I’d love to see some tips on working with it. Do you need to use wider seam allowances? Should it be paired with regular quilting cotton, or not? Etc.

I just bought some knit for the 1st time, and am hoping to sew an easy shrug with it. I’d love more tutorials for knit and voile. Even though there are so many great prints and colors in these fabrics, I avoid both because I don’t know what to do with them.

I just ventured into knits last weekend! I had seen so many great reviews on the “Tee for Two” pattern that I eventually gathered enough courage to try it. This was my first ever clothing pattern, first time making a shirt (I’ve done a few skirts) and first time using knit. Once I got through a few bumps on the first shirt it was smooth sailing and now I am looking forward to trying more with knit.
I would really like to work with voiles more. They drape so much more flatteringly on a woman’s figure than quilting cotton.
Linen is another I’d like to use more, and knits!

I have been interested in sewing with a few different fabrics, such as silk and lace, which I have never done before. Knits are on my list, too.
I’ve always used a variety of fabric, mostly for apparel and home dec. I like the idea of using different textures within a quilt for the tactile interest. So far though I have used all cotton or all wool for the tops. I have used flannel and fleece for backings also.
I have some laminated cotton for a bag project I want to do, but I’ve been putting it off and working on other things. I do love making scrap quilts with vintage fabric of all kinds mixed with regular quilting cottons – it’s mostly cotton, but different weights and textures go together better than I thought they would.
I stick mostly to cottons and knits. I made some adorable baby pants out of a crazy printed corduroy, but that was just because I liked the print, not the fabric type! Open to trying new things.
I always use print cotton to make things for my boy. It’s also nice to mix textures like corduroy and flannel
LOVE those In the Kitchen prints, and the Corderoy “Soul” prints, and Oh, just ALL OF THEM! You choose!
I find myself staying in my comfort zone. I used to sew much more when my children were little.

Yes, I have been using cotton voiles for summer clothes because I want something light, airy, and breathable. I love the Anna Maria Horner designs, and would love to see more. Also, I can easily see myself using corduroys and velveteens for pillows, furniture slip covers, sewing machine covers, little boy pants and short-overalls, and possibly bags.

I have been trying to sew more with vintage fabrics, like found in antiques stores or garage sales. I love old flour sack cloth, etc. However, it poses some challenges. I would love more tutorials or tips and tricks for working with them. the widths are narrower, some are thinner fabric, should i wash it first or not, will stains come out or not, should i use a different needle. . .oh, the questions i have!

I’ve used some voile scraps in my quilting, but haven’t purchased any yardage for larger projects. Corduroy is easy for me to work with, but the more delicate fabrics… not so much. Some sewing tips would be grand!
I generally make do with whatever old stuff we have, what I’ve found in large sizes at the thrift store, or bits of things in the remnant bin — I can’t sew too well, so I try not to buy much fabric until I sharpen my skills a little. So yes, cotton woven, jersey, fleece, corduroy, whatever!

I’ve messed around mostly with cotton, but previously in my youth ( big laugh here because I’m 30 ) I worked alot with knits. I started sewing at 11 and worked with knits alot, however I dropped working with them in my early twenties.. late teens.. making clothing is something I plan on getting back into.

I sew mostly for my 2 daughters so have started with quilting cottons. I’d like to get into some jersey but haven’t mustered the courage yet. As for the heavier fabrics, i’ve used some in tote bags and in a computer sleeve. What i’m currently dreaming of is making a courdoroy dress for my 3 year old for the fall/winter, but i can only get solid dark colours locally. I dream of pretty cordouroy!

I recently started experimenting with terry cloth. I am making some really cute embelleshed hooded towels for my kids as well as for baby shower gifts. I have broken a few needles while figuring out how to tackle it on my machine, but I am making great progress.
I’d love to use some of the new designer fabrics – certainly voiles and maybe corduroy. The price has kept me from doing it, though. For now, I’m just stickin’ with the cotton.

As a beginning sewist I’m experimenting with going beyond quilting cottons. I’ve used corduroy, acetate lining, voile, poplin, and basic cotton knits in re-fashioning t-shirts. I still need more practice with knits of all sorts and understanding just what makes each different and for what garments each is used. I have been sewing with voile and knits recently. I am slowly learning. I chose to add these fabrics to my repertoire because i like sewing garments for my daughter and occasionally, myself too. These are soft and comfortable to wear and they arnt as prone to wrinkle as quilt weight cottons. I actually incorporated a piece of silky fabric into quilted pillow top that I made yesterday. (one of my first ventures sewing with it!) and boy was I frustrated!!! It was fraying all over the place and I felt like my needle was too big for the delicate fabric. Ug! It looked so pretty once I was done but I promised myself not to do that again!

I’m a novice and trying to use some different fabrics. Made my first baby blanket set with minky on one side and cotton on the other. Turned out great once i figured out how to work with the two fabrics together and not have puckering. It would be helpful to know more about thread type when working with two different fabric types.

I mostly use cottons. I occasionally branch out, but I don’t really know how to work with more difficult fabrics, so I usually give up fairly quickly.
I am interested in learning about knits, just don’t know how to start! Love the site =)

I haven’t really experimented much beyond cotton fabrics. However, I did recently experiment with elastic thread. Every tutorial I looked at had completely different guidelines for using it. I took bits of info from all sorts of resources and eventually found what worked best for me and my ~40 year old sewing machine.

I love sewing with quilting cottons, but have been branching out to knits lately, and love them! I’ve got some corduroy on hand too that I can’t wait to make some cute fall/winter clothing out of-I just need to find a good pattern. I love it when one of my favorite designers come out with fun new fabrics (i.e.: Amy Butler corduroy!)
I bought knits but haven’t tried sewing with them yet. I do not have a serger. I just bought some twill and used it to make a bag – I’m definitely trying to find something right in between quilting cotton and canvas for bag making. I love corduroy and used that to make a dog sling – it turned out great! I just used sew-in instead of fusible interfacing. I can’t wait to see what you get in!
Ducky. I was scared to use duck fabric at first because of the weight of it, but I ended up loving it. So far I’ve only used it to make grocery bags, but my favorite thing was that I didn’t have to use interfacing to give the bag extra body and strength. The duck did that for me. It washes good, doesn’t shift, is 100% cotton, and best of all – no attitude from my sewing machine! Even when sewing duck, standard cotton AND the cotton webbing straps all together! Still no ‘tude!
I’ve been sewing with corduroy lately, being Winter here it’s nice to use the thicker fabrics for extra warmth.

Well, I just love the newer, more modern print collections (like some of those shown in this blog post) and I find making bags and little gifts, things for the home, etc., are fun. I like making modern quilts, usually baby or lap size, and landscape quilts also. I use cotton fabrics 99% of the time. Some tuts on dressmaking for a refresher would be wonderful – I’m thinking of trying that again, after many years away from dressmaking. Love your site!
I’ve tried corduroy and canvas and just ordered some voile… hopefully I’ll be able to make something nice with it!
I have only sewed one item with voile – a scarf – I loved the soft feel of the fabric but it sure was slippery to sew with and led to some serious frustration. I may try again…with even more pins!
I bought some super slippery knit that I was thinking of making a nursing top out off, and to test out my serger on. I also bought some voile recently, I made an investment in trying something new, now to just get off the fence and DO IT!
So many of the scarfs that women are wearing so beautifully are voile, but I know that it can pull threads. What is the trick? I would love to make some of the infinity scarves for Christmas.

Hmmmm different fabrics???? I was just working with a soft poly sheer…I prefer 100% cottons. As far as tutorials I would say simple dresses would be lovely.
I have never used anything but cotton. This is mainly because I mainly quilt. I love the laminated fabrics and think that it would be fun to attempt a lunch bag or something similar with that type.
I actually just bought some great velour. Very ’80s, I know, but it’s for parts of a busy book for my nephews.
I like voile but I mostly just like to touch it- feels so nice, almost buttery. I would like to know more about working with voile.

I have a silk that I’m still not brave enough to use and some knit. Would love to see more easy tutorials for children’s clothing using voiles and corduroy. I’m not a pattern kinda gal and I mostly work with cotton right now.
I LOVE all fabrics but lately have especially enjoyed making rag quilts with flannel.
I am sticking to only 100% cotton, quilt weight fabrics — mostly because I make quilts and table runners, and I like using fabrics that are all the same weight!
I would love to see a tutorial that uses flannel fabric to make a quilt to get any hints and tips on what needs to be done differed.
I’m interested in trying voiles and velets. The fabrics look terrific.

Wow! i love the Happy Mochi yum yum! I have recently used vinyl to create some fun cosmetic bags. It was easy to sew, but I had to put paper between it and my presser foot so it wouldn’t stick.
I haven’t really tried any other fabrics but maybe I should think about it!
My biggest branch out into new fabrics has been using chalkboard fabric for the first time. My chalkboard placemats turned out really great!
I have branched out lately. I’ve began to buy solids. Up until now the beautiful patterns always grab my eye and pocketbook, but you just have to have solids to showcase those beautiful patterns, and hey some solids are so pretty they really can stand alone.
I’ve been using cotton/linen blends and find they dye up beautifully! But I think my fave is cotton sateen. Nothing to say but yummy, yummy, yummy!
I’m loving all the new substrates! I just wish that more designers would print on double cotton gauze – I fell in love with it with Heather’s Far Far Away I!
I’ve never met a fabric I didn’t like…still working hard to find one! I do have some velvet and velveteen in the stash that I can’t bear to cut into…
I continue to try to get up the guts to do more with knits. So far mostly in my mind. I actually came to cotton later, after just experimenting with whatever was pretty and learning that cotton is in fact way easier to sew!

I bought some cotton knit fabric a few months ago. I made a shirt for my daughter, it came out okay. I need to try again.
I decided to be adventurous and sew my girls swimsuits for this summer. It was not as scary as I had thought and they turned out so cute! Next I want to try voile, so tutorials on that would be great!
Cotton is my friend, though I just made a linen tunic out of a Japanese pattern book.
I usually stick with cottons and fleece. I recently tried olean fabric to make some lunch bags and it worked out wonderfully. It’s fun to try different fabrics.

This may be too basic, but I’ve been learning about so many fabric types since I’ve started getting into sewing. Cotton, knit. Pretty simple. But what is voile? What type of projects can you use it for? A primer about the different types of fabric would be helpful. What does each feel like? What would the fabric be best used for? That sort of thing.

I have ventured out to a lawn for a beach cover up. I’ve used other bases for bags as well. I’m not sure how I feel about it in a quilt. On the surface, I like the idea. I guess it would depend on how accurate my piecing would be.

just started using upholstery remnants to make bags/pillows. seems to work ok on my vintage morse machine, but not on my 1990’s singer. love your tutorials and just finished two wallhangings using the fanfold and sliver-cut method on the two inch squares. ingenious!! amazed all my friends at knitting night show-and-tell.

I. Like to mixed it up a bit but mostly use cottons and fleece.
I have used everything, as I have a degree in fibers…now since most of what I do is quilts as gifts I stick with washable and durable quilt shop quality cotton, but I have bins of future projects that include an all wool and all silk quilt (including each respective batting) and knits as in tee shirt quilts for my 4 children with things saved as far back as Star Wars onsies!

I’ve got some voile that I’m wanting to cut into before the summer is over, but usually use quilting cotton. I’m thinking that a corduroy quilt for winter would be fun to try…at least for backing.
I use 100% cottons because I love the feel of them through my fingers. However, tonight at a retreat a friend was showing an applique project she made using wools, and I loved it! So now I’d like to try my hand at that; it looks so warm & friendly, and the ones she used had a slight plaid pattern to it, which really excited me.
I mix in corduroy for fall and winter clothing. Fleece and minky for baby gifts. Oilcloth for tote bags. This summer I made a ton of ruffle leg shorts for my little girls from knits. I just purchases my first yards of voile and I’m ready to start with a scarf and then see if I can make a tunic for myself. I will be glad to see more info on different ways to use the varieties of fabric that the designers are starting to produce. Especially helpful would be tips on what changes need to be made on my machine…needles and tensions, etc.

I recently came across some lawn that has a pretty print, but because of the sheerness of the fabric I’m afraid my original dress idea won’t work. I’m mulling it over. I just tried making the yoga skirt from the tutorial. I love it! Simple, inexpensive, cute – what a great project! And it was fun to try working with knit.

I accidentally used a broadcloth or some cotton blend in a quilt. I don’t recommend doing this on accident. Luckily the quilt was for a service project in Hawaii so the finished product looked like waves and we’ll just pretend it was on purpose

Im fairly new to sewing, so not really. Another problem is that my local fabric shop is awful and doesn’t have quality fabrics. Having to buy online is getting expensive so only do it once in a while. I would LOVE to make clothing for myself so would love to venture out into something else other than quilting fabrics ! Would like to see some more tutorials for clothing, maybe for teenagers?

How did you know I get in a rut? So true. I’m trying to branch out by making tunics (thanks to you) in fabrics I never would have considered. Brighter colors, more contemporary prints. Lately, after Tunic One, I thought I’d love to use a home dec weight fabric for the fall/winter. Using fabric like this brings up a whole new area of pitfalls and special handling. Love your fabrics – when sewed garments, used many different kinds of fabrics. If sew garments again, would like to try some of the new knits and voiles. Normally, use all cotton for quilts.
I’m a novice sewer, to aside from cotton/poly blends, I haven’t tried sewing with anything else. I’d love to get my hands on some oilcoth to made some cute summer bags or some voile to make a cute summer top for my daughter.
I have been making flutter-sleeved pull over tops for my daughter to wear. She loves the feel and easy care of the fabric. I, too, would like to try something using the voile.

I was drawn initially to quilting as a place to begin playing with prints and colour but am excited to branch out from the traditional to discover the depth and breadth of textiles more fully. Each type of fabric has so much potential to create interesting new dimensions and so I find there is lots of exploring to be done. Having a walking foot on my machine allows me to handle a lot of different weights of fabric and the textures. Soft sculpture and three dimensional use of fabric is where I’m exploring at the moment..it’s all just great fun!
I have been using some of the corduroys for the backs of pillows as they are so soft and cuddly!
Some tips for sewing knits would be great. I’m very tempted to try but don’t know where to start and an easy project (maybe a little outfit for a child) would be great

Hi! recently discovered laminated fabrics. They do not contain PVC, which makes them ideal for children!
I’m another sewer who wants to branch out with knits. On occasion, I’ll even search for simple sewing patterns, but then I can’t think of a fabric that would work, or the directions on the pattern are too hazy about what sort of stretchy fabrics are okay.

I bought a big roll of vinyl just today to monkey with — Had issues with it in the past but think I’ve got it worked out now. Lately I’ve been making some soft sweet pillowcases from old sheets! They’re already so soft and broken in. And used the same sheets to make sleep pants, too!

Voile and lightweight fabrics scare me. They just seem so delicate. Would love to see a tutorial making something with a really lightweight fabric.

My cupboards are filled with quilting cotton but I’d love to know more about sewing fabrics with a pile – velvet, etc. Also finer fabrics like gauzes or fine voiles.
I haven’t tried any new fabric at all! I’m just stuck! Would love something new.
Love that Happy Mochi Yum Yum!!! I can’t bear to stray off the path of cotton for now, but maybe because it’s so hot, I can’t imagine sewing on anything other than cool cotton!

my biggest branching out has been in color….I used to use mostly florals or sweet baby patterns, now I’m into black and darker colors….and loving it! But I also recently bought some velvet and silk to add to a string quilt…just haven’t gotten up the nerve to do it yet!
I’m loving all the new fabrics for clothing for my niece!! I’m a beginner but I’m trying new things!
I’ve really liked cotton poplin lately. I LOVE LOVE LOVE the “soar” organic poplin I got recently. It Makes a sturdier sling that’s still breathable for baby #2
in a way I guess I am I am experimenting since I am now very much into repurposing adn thrifting for fabric
At the last quilt show I went to I purchased 3 small pieces of silk. Now I just have to gather up the courage to cut into those lovely pieces…..

Knits. Everything I love is made of Knit and is simply made. If I could just master knits without a serger I would be happy.
Oh I just got a ruffler too so I’m making lots of ruffles for things – looks like the ’80s around here.
I use mostly cotton for quilting, but have been using fleece for applique – it doesn’t fray and with a wide variety of colors and patterns it lends itself well to applique.
I LOVE knits and would love some advice for sewing w/ them & project ideas
