I’ve dabbled a bit with corduroy, but would love more tutorials on things to make with it, such as bags, kids/baby clothes and/or softies. Hugs Naomi
I love all the different types of fabrics. Especially decor weights for purses/bags. I would like a tutorial that uses cotton voile. I have wanted to work with the lightweight fabric but haven’t yet.
I pretty much stick with quilting cotton and poly/cotton broadcloth for smocking. But I have some lovely voile that I want to try but am a bit afraid of! I sew more now with knit than I used to and am really loving it.
I just started working a bit more with voile, cord and some heavier vintage fabrics (I believe are cotton). I’m tempted to work with silks and even some polyester chiffon fabrics as I love the flowy, billowy blouses and dresses that everyone’s wearing but am a bit scared of the delicate nature and slippery-ness of the those fabrics.
Yay for Free FAbric Fridays!!!!!
I usually stick to Cotton because I had bad expierience with anything thicker! Broken needles, puckering etc. If you could show how to sew thicker fabric with a small project/tutorial, that would be great!
venturing into knits!!!! Love that they don’t fray!
Lately I wanted to try to sew with laminates, but I heard that you need a special sewing machine foot which does not stick to the laminate. What if I can’t get such a special foot? I have a very simple sewing machine and there are only few sewing feet available for it.
I had the same problem with heavier fabrics not cooperating. But after taking my sewing machine in for an overhaul, the shop was able to suggest a better needle, so I decided to try some corduroy. It worked great! I had about 10 yards of light gray corduroy, so I am making reusable shopping totes with it since it’s nice and durable…and unlike the ones you buy from the store, these won’t fall apart when you toss them into the washing machine!
We don’t carry laminates, but we used to sell a lot of oilcloth. Most of the same suggestions apply. Check out these tips:
http://sewmamasew.com/blog2/2007/01/oilcloth-tips/
I’ve tried voile once, but it didn’t come out as expected. It tends to pucker a lot. Maybe my technique was wrong. So tutorials on how to sew with voile or even corduroy would be awesome! Thank Sew Mama Sew!
Trying to sew with knits. I have seen a few skirts that were knit but way too expensive, so I am going to make one. Praying it turns out okay.
I managed to swap some old medal ribbons for some beautiful velvet at a vintage fabric store, I have been making some purses working out how to deal with the fraying situations during construction!!!
I mainly use quilting cotton but some heavier weights for bags
Started working more with knits, they are not as scary as i thought they were!
I was doing fashion sewing before patchwork, sew I have been sewing with all sorts of fabric for more that 40years.
I love the look that the linen fabrics add to patchwork
I’ve learned that there is so much fabric available beyond my local fabric stores! Thanks to sew mama sew! I’m new to Internet quilting and blogging and still trying to understand it all! I look forward to one day understand more!
Hi, since I am still learning, I am just sticking to cotton blends! I want easy peasy lessons!
I recently made a beach bag with an oilcloth/ waterresistant lining. It turned out nicely although I found you have to sew and cut well because this fabric does not stretch at all…
I primarily use upholstery fabric for my bags and cotton or silk for interial of the bags.
I don’t know if I have a proper suggestion for a tutorial, but I’d love a tutorial on using bag bottoms. I bought some of it and don’t know how to use it. Do I sew in, do I glue it onto the bag?
Only been quilting for just under a year so stick to quilting cotton. I wouldn’t know what to do with voile, denim or corduroy so would be interesting to see how other people use them. Linda
I am cutting up old clothes so some of those have elastane in them. Hope it works in a quilt!
I’ve sewed with tulle and laminiated cotton (not at the same time, but ….) I have oil cloth waiting for the right project ( and a little more courage) and then just with regular fabrics but not too shabby since I have only been sewing for <2 years. I think so, don't you?
I have tried working with cotton velour, it is so stretchy and is difficult to work with, but makes cute bunnies! I like wool felt because you don’t have to worry about seams. I always enjoy sewing with cottons!
I would dearly love to be able to sew stretch fabrics. I don’t have a serger and I’m unlikely to get one for a while, but there are so many projects I want to do with jersey. A tutorial showing me how to sew jersey on a regular sewing machine without getting either a solid mess of zigzag stitching or a seam that frays (I swing between one extreme and the other, I can’t seem to be able to get a seem that stops fraying and isn’t solid satin stitching) would be a lifesaver (ok, a sanity saver). Thanks.
I’m venturing into vintage dupioni silk today as a matter of fact but I would love to try voile but so expensive!
http://hereswhatididtoday.blogspot.com/search/label/simplicity%205961
I love working with all kinds of fabrics. There are lots great patterns in the cotton/quilting arena that I’d love to see merge into other areas. So glad Amy Butler and other are branching out. Can’t wait to see her Rayons in person.
And for those having a hard time with heavy and/super lightweight fabrics, sometimes a simple change of your needle and adjusting the thread tension makes all the difference in the world. I can also adjust the pressure of my presser foot… great for bulky fabrics.
I’d love to try some voile and I haven’t used corduroy for years!
I would like to learn any easy way to sew eyelet over a lining in a skirt so that both layers have their own drape and they don’t look all glommed together.
Love the new fabrics!
Cotton for me, in all kinds of weights. It’s simple and pretty. Though I am also into vintage fabrics. Sooooo nice. More tutorials? Yes please!! What kind of tutorials? Bags, skirts and dresses (for adults!)
Esther.
I’m finally taking the plunge and attempting to sew jersey, despite my lack of a serger! Last time I tried it was a total disaster, but I think I may have more patience this time!
I wish I could stop the fabric from rolling in on itself when I’m trying to sew it.. It drives me mad!
Some tutorials for making summer clothes for in voile and/or lawn for young girls would be appreciated. The trouble is, that most summer clothes are very billowy, and as she is a bit on the scrawny side, she tends to get lost in billows and folds…
I’ve done a few reasonably successful rounds with garment-sewing before coming back to happy, well-behaved cottons. So I am happy to see pretty prints in different substrates (especially knits)…just wish they weren’t so pricey!
I’m trying to work our applique with rip stop nylon, so that I can embellish some of my re-usable bags and still leave them stuffable!
I’ve been wanting to try some rayon challis, I had a dress as a kid made from it that draped really nicely, but it seems like it could be a little fiddly to sew.
I love to sew with cotton jersey’s but hate the slippery poly-ones, but there are some available with great patterns on it. So you may have some advice how to work with slippery fabrics.
I have been working with a lot of Jersey lately, I love how versatile it is, even if a little difficult to work with! I would love some tutorials for summer dresses, in jersey or other fabrics. Trying to be thrifty and home made in these harder times
i have tried knits, would like to try laminates for bags and accessories
I’ve used all kinds of fabrics & I love to try new things.
I’ve really been having fun with the bright colors this summer.
I would love to make a swimming-bag with laminates, but I’m afraid that it’s impossible with my simply sewing machine. I’m going to check out the oilcloth-tips. Thank you Kristin for your suggestion!
All the design of material is great and colourful! i want to use it to make bags and pouch..is it possible for you to post to Malaysia?
0r do you have any branch selling it here.
I’ve just started working with light weight sheer fabrics for dress making and although the end results look ok I know it could be better. Some tutorials would be great and might help me to to reduce the number of garments waiting to be unpicked as they are not quite wearable.
I love working with denim. I really like the feel of it when its lost the stiffness and is old and faded. There should be more denim quilt patterns.
Apart from that give me solids and batiks any day!
I’ve been experimenting lots recently… oilcloth, chalk cloth, canvas weight cotton, but the fabric I have found the hardest to use is jersey knit.
As of now I’m only using woven cotton fabrics…will try knit soon!
I’ve been doing corduroy pants for the little one and it’s been great. I’ve also been using vintage cottons that were told to me as being “Winter Cotton’s”? They are great, easy to sew and look nice with no puckering. I’d like to know how to use cotton voile, and also how to add lace details. Thanks.
I stick mostly to cottons, but I love the new Amy Butler cords and plan to make some skirts with it.
I have used home dec weight a bit but would love a review/Overview of how the new Amy butler rayon behaves and how to sew with it!
I always stick to cottons, usually quilting type thickness, but would love to use some cord or denim. Have no idea how to attempt this? assume new needles? different weight thread???
Love any advice!
I’ve been branching into KNITS! They are totally awesome, and since I have a baby, totally necessary.
I even mastered the twin needle hem. Win!
I’d love some corduroy to make cute skirts for my little girl
I would love tutorials on working with knits and with heavier fabrics that have naps, like velour or courderoy. Thanks so much!
I haven’t had enough time to devote to sewing lately to be able to try new and different…for me, it’s good old cottons for garments and quilts this summer!
I’m absolutely loving playing around with bright batik fabrics from Asia and some bright African prints. I have always been drawn to bright colors but these open up so many more options.
I am new to sewing and have used mostly quilt weight cottons. However, I have started a project using denim and I accidentally ordered (and subsequently used) voile in a baby quilt. I’d like to branch out a bit more!
I would love to try working with voile because I keep hearing about how nice it is. Mostly I stick with what I have which is cotton. Thanks for bringing back FFF!!
I love the tops I’ve made with voile! I have no idea what to do with rayon.
linen is as brave as I have gotten so far, but I do love the look of it!
i just bought some laminate fabric. I’m going to make a rain hat. There are not many cute ones availeable and Amy Butler has such cute fabrics available along with instructions for sewing on this fabric.
I want to try using knits, but haven’t yet. I have been looking at several tutorials using them lately though.
I am a big fan of corduroy – from baby fine to thick wale. I have always been a little scared of knit fabrics so any tutorials about the basics would be appreciated.
I just bought my first yardage of voile, but haven’t gotten my nerve up to cut into it! Guess I need to suck it up and figure it out!
Love those Alexander Henry prints (as usual). I really haven’t used anything but quilting cottons. I’m pretty new at sewing, and I am also on a major budget, so most other base cloths aren’t very accessible to me.
I’ve recently bought some decor weight fabric to make a tote bag with but I haven’t gotten around to doing it yet. Not sure what I’m so afraid of!
I pretty much stay with cottons for quilting, but have found a new love for solids. Would love to see patterns for using solids in quilts or accessories.
I want to make something with voile or corduroy. A tutorial on any one of those fabrics would be helpful.
I tried a silk-ish blend a few months ago and I don’t know if I’ll try it again! Haha It frayed like crazy, but maybe now that I know that I can think of ways to prevent it a little more. I just cut every pattern out with pinking shears and that seemed to help a little bit.
I have always used cotton fabric for my quilts but I decided to use flannel for the back of my daughters quilt to make it feel cozy. I love the new fabrics you have online.
I’ve been trying to use different colors. I have some scrappy fabric that I got from somebody, and it’s not my normal colors. I’m trying to break out.
I am brand new to sewing, so i have only stuck with cottons. But, being a long-time knitter, I know that I will eventually branch out into other materials because having the right fiber can make all the difference in the project! Thanks for the chance to win one of these beautiful fabrics!
I picked up some knit and am excited to make something comfy with it, but right now I’m trying to read up on how to sew it so that it doesn’t get that shrivelly look along the stitching.
I bought some corduroy, but its still sitting in the closet. I’m afraid to use it. Guess I need to put on my big girl pants and just go for it! LOL
I have tried sewing on all of these fabrics and there are definitely some “tricks” to learn. I think some of my problems have been using the wrong needle and not knowing how to press/iron correctly. Perhaps some ironing hints (or don’t ever in the case of laminates!) might be also useful. Thanks for a great giveaway too!
I have branched out. Recently I tried using corduroy on an applique of a fire truck. it turned out AWESOME! Quilter’s Cotton used to be my only fabric, but I now sew with minky on a nearly daily basis!
Thanks Sew Mama Sew!
I just received some decorator weight fat quarters with which I am planning to make a bag of some sort.
I haven’t branched out – yet. I LOVE the Amy Butler cordury – I have visions of winter skirts, and perhaps a pinafore (think that might be a jumper in America?) for my daughter.
I’ve just started sewing with solids. Doesn’t sound like much of an adventure but you have to be really careful or every mistake shows up! It’s been a fun challenge.
I am sticking to cottons but experiment with weight.
I’d like to try some the voile and poplin.
I would love to try to sew knits for my children, but it sounds very challenging to me, and nice knits are not easy to find. It would be great if we could find both knit fabrics and tips on Sew Mama Sew!
I have been wanting to venture into knits so I could make some skirts for myself, but I have heard it is difficult.
I haven’t been doing too much with fabric lately, but I might branch out to get some corduroy if I win FFF!
I love trying different types of fabric! I need to try some knits and sheer. I would love to see tutorials on how to work with delicate fabrics.
I’d like to try out voile or some softer more drape-y fabrics. I have tried knits with mixed results.
It has been awhile since I have had a moment to return to Sew Mama Sew. What greet things I have missed. Beautiful new fabric, summer tutorials, invitational postings…wow!! I have been dabbling with mixing linens and other fabrics. My practice piece was a little mug rug using linen and Kaffee Fasset fabrics. I love the look. The new fabrics you posted would certainly lend themselves to that type of a mix. I am thinking a beautiful iPad case witH linen and Happy Mochi Yum Yum or Paris Apartment accents. BEST. Accessorized teacher in town! I think it is time for me to look into developing some tutorials, as a veteran special Ed teacher I have spent my life task analyzing and writing directions. Maybe this post is sparking a new career…thanks..sew on everyone….
I do try different fabrics sometimes…rarely…linen or knit or chenille…mostly I stick with cotton.

I have tried a couple things with knits recently. It scared me at first, but its not too bad!
I love the micro coudoroy for Fall and Winter dresses! I cant wait to smock some cute dresses for my littlest one year old.
I am also on the hunt for some thick colorful knit to work with. I love the look and feel of the fabric but I get intimidated by the different ways to sew it! I would love to make baby gifts for friends or cute dresses for my tweens
I would love to see more projects that incorporate flannels. I love the extra cosiness they provide for the back side of lap quilts, but I always struggle to find beautiful prints that coordinate with the quilt front. Thanks!
I’ve enjoyed sewing clothes with knits and linens lately. They are cool and flexible and surprisingly easy to sew with!
I have been sewing for a little while now, but mostly simple handbags and skirts, etc. I just recently have attempted quilting because I have a lot of new babies coming into my life. So, I thought it would be genius to incorporate various textures (corduroy, satins, minky, etc.) in the quilts to keep baby entertained. But, I have found this approach to be exponentially more frustrating than rewarding. I would LOVE a tip or two on using multiple fabrics in one project or my babies will not be enjoying the texture aesthetic any time soon!
I’ve braved using laminated cotton and love it! It’s expensive so I was a bit scared of mucking it up but it’s great! I don’t have a special machine just use my quilting/walking foot and it works fine. thanks for the chance to win.
I’ve just ventured out to sewing with voile… and I love it! It’s not that I was afraid of working with this type of fabric, but I did not really have a project in mind to sew. Since then I’ve whipped up a few “practice” tunics, but am dying to get my hands on some the nice quality voiles that are being offerend now.
I have worked with quilting cotton (fat quarters and such) the most. Mainly because I am new to sewing. I have worked with other fabric like fleece, corduroy and jersey knit. I do a little costuming so I have worked with silk like material, linen and taffeta. There are probably some other fabrics I have worked with, but I can remember the names. I would love to work with laminated cotton. Any tutorial on how to work with laminated cotton or just any tutorial would be fine. I love sewing and would like to learn as much as I can. Sewing is my happy place.
I’ve been sewing with voiles and seersuckers lately–perfect for beating this summer heat.
Love those colors and I need a new bag (need, as in, want!). Looking forward to see you work with corduroy.
I enjoy experimenting with different types of fabric, but I don’t know much about them.
I’m a crazy quilter, so I love all sorts of different fabrics! My favorites are cottons, silk, and brocade. I’ve also done bags with upholstry fabrics, but I’ve had a hard time with that type of fabric (seam allowances and such).
I haven’t started yet, but am looking to branch out a little bit. I love corduroy and would love to learn to sew with it!
I have started working with knits but have a problem with the stretch of it. I would love to have some tutorials to address this. I have been making 18 inch doll clothes with various materials but mostly cotton. I would love some tutorials on making doll clothes as well.
I am slowly decorating our house – and it’s about time! We moved in September. I am looking forward to working with laminated fabrics and heavier weight fabrics for outdoor settings.
Excited to see more knits and corduroy coming in. I’ve mostly been working with lighter weight fabrics, but looking ahead to fall I’m thinking about sturdier fabrics. I’m also pregnant and plotting to make maternity dresses and tunics out of yummy knit fabrics now that I have a serger…
I just started working with solids. I have no idea why I haven’t tried it up to now but I just haven’t. Thanks Cynthia
I’m excited for more options of voile and lawn fabrics. They are so soft and drapey and fun to work with! Also, I’m really intrgued that Soul Blossoms is available in rayon now. I’ve never worked with rayon, so I’m not sure how it’s different from any of the other options out there.
There are others who have tutorials on working with knits, but I think more could be said. I’ve been working with knits lately and still sometimes have questions that have been unanswered. Also, I’ve got a shirt pattern that I’m anxious to try but am just waiting for the right voile or lawn fabric.
thanks for the chance at some free fabric
Sorry to double-post. I really am NOT trying to sneak a second entry here, but I thought of something else I’d like to read about: sewing with more formal fabrics. One of these days I know I’m going to be asked to make a bridesmaid dress or something. I’d like to see someone talk about the special considerations when sewing formal wear.
I’m mostly sewing cotton fabric. I made a couple new summer tops using a lightweight polyester fabric I found at an estate sale. The salvege said it was made in 1970. So, I guess I have a couple vintage tops.
I’m a little afraid of knits. Maybe wary is a better word. I know I need a different needle (I even have it!) but I haven’t attempted it yet. I’ve sewn slippery fabrics (when I didn’t know any better, and then later on when I did) and they were fine, and I have some voile that I’m making into a skirt as soon as I get a minute, and I’ve sewn denim, and all this mention of courderoy is getting me interested, but for some reason it’s the stretchy knits that worry me.
i’ve worked with many types of fabric and tend to gravitate towards quilting cottons. i like the selection and feel of those fabrics. i have, however, been branching out into using lots of solids for my quilts. i like the bold look of them!
I use mostly quilting cottons but I do hope to expand into other types in the future. Especially oilcloth. Thanks!
I love corduroy! it has been years since I made anything out of it but it use to be the only thing I used. Once I was multi tasking by doing laundry and cutting fabric and I accidently cut my husbands favorite pair of cords :0 Ten years later and he still reminds me of it!
I would love some ideas on using voile. It’s so intriguing! And that Happy Mochi Yum Yum fabric line is amazing! I love that you have some Kona paired with it.
I’ve recently tried chenille and I mostly use cottons. I used corduroy for a very small project!
I haven’t tried different fabrics, but I’m very interested in branching out. Any information about what fabrics are good for what uses and how to work with them would be helpful.
I’ve been attempting to work with swimsuit fabric. Much frustration ensues. The fabric just gets sucked into the machine! I would love to learn how to make bathing caps.
I tried sewing vinyl last weekend as I was trying to make a changing pad for my sister. It was too difficult to sew and keep paper underneath and to the side of the presser foot so it wouldn’t stick. I ended up buying some other treated fabric that has worked great!
I have just recently returned to sewing and am so in love with all of the new fabrics and vintage repros. Love love love this site!
I mostly have quilting cottons in my stash, which is fine I guess for most things. But I’ve used a few heavier fabrics (corduroy, canvas) for bags and I’d like to learn more about how to use fabrics that are better suited to making clothing, in particular women’s dresses and girls’ dresses and also tops. I’m not sure which types of fabric I should buy for those sorts of things, honestly.
I’m about to try my hand at velvet this weekend, and I’m looking for a laminate or oilcloth to make a raincoat for my daughter. I made a couple of corduroy dresses for my daughter this winter and it was very easy to sew with, just like cotton really. Thanks for the oilcloth tips!
I have some lawn and voile fabrics I’m planning for summer skirts (hopefully to be done this weekend). I’d love to see some tutorials for adult wearables made from heavier fabrics for fall, (not bags or purses – even though I love all bags!). I’m thinking maybe a jacket and/or skirt (maybe even made out of corduroy like other posters have mentioned). I think the key to working with corduroy is using a new jeans needle in your sewing machine.
I’m such a wuss. I stick with quilting type cotton. I tried to make a dress from some slinky knit fabric and it almost drove me to the brink of insanity. I do branch out as far as linen blends and decorator weight fabric. HA!!! So like my personality.
With quilting, I’ve stayed pretty true to cotton calicoes, but after joining a bee I decided to put some of the polycottons I’ve been given to use. I’m working up practice blocks in that, then eventually will have enough blocks for a picnic quilt. My machine is from the 70s, no fancy bells and whistles, so I’ve been nervous about trying knits. It does fine with canvas, though, and I remember my mom even working with vinyl. It’s all about the needle and the weight of the thread. Seems most fabric counter workers are more than happy to help you out on those types of decisions.
I just tried a silk blend. It’s definitely harder than cotton, but the results are amazing!!
i love jersey knit but that’s about as far as i’ve branched out….wait, i did make bridal party sashes out of satin taffeta, that was fun!! love the giveaway!!!
I have noticed in the last year my color choices have really been different…and I am leaning more toward modern but that could be because I “found” them via blogs. As far as tutorials…I love the small projects. Wall Hangings especially sound good.
I would LOVE to try oilcloth, but I’m just a little intimidated by it. I would love a few tutorials on great oilcloth goodies!
I haven’t tried much beyond quilting cottons yet. I’m very tempted to try something with voile, but don’t know quite what to make.
I haven’t sewn in 20 years. My children are now old enough so that I can sit and not be interrupted. I have even started a making chic diaper bags to give to new mommies at our church! It has been so much fun getting back into this beautiful art!
I want to try smocking on corduroy. My mom said that my great-grandmother used to make the prettiest pillows that way.
I like to work with some utilitarian fabrics and mix them up with pretty cottons. The simplicity tends to compliment the beautiful cottons available.
I’m still pretty new to sewing, so I’ve been sticking with cottons. I need to learn when to use different fabrics & what the advantages/disadvantages are. That would be a helpful post in my opinion.
I have only worked with cotton because I am new to sewing. I want to eventually try others but am still learning about the different types.
Yes. My very first quilt was corduroy, way back when I was in high school. Recently I made a new granddaughter a satin quilt and another granddaughter one that included dotted swiss. Oh, and a pillow top quilt from men’s ties and a little crazy quilt that included some velvet, satin, and lace–not my fave…too many weights. I’d love to win some fabric!!!
I love to use corduroy on bags and purses! I would die for some Amy Butler corduroy – they would look amazing!!
I tend to stay with the standard cotton blends. I would love to see some tutorials using knit and even (don’t laugh) but stretchy spandex type material for my daughters dance uniforms.
I’m a beginning sewer and have recently branched out from cottons and decorator fabrics. I’ve done two projects with lightweight sheers and am about to try out some linen. I would love some more tips on how to work with knits – they always give me so much trouble! I also want to make something with seersucker.
I’ve tried knits with no success. My machine skips stitches for some reason. I recently made a new patio umbrella with outdoor canvas and it turned out really well.
Yes I have been branching out a bit but more in terms of the fabric designs not the fabric itself. Although I have used some heavier — probably deco weight a bit. Mainly because I liked the pattern. But it doesn’t give me the antiquey puffed up look I like after quilting and washing
Thank you so much for all your generous giveaways. I’m still pretty new at quilting/sewing, so I’ve stuck with cotton. However, I would LOVE to learn how to make something for myself using knits. I’m just afraid to start because they’re so stretchy!!
I’ve been sewing with voile and lawn and had some hiccups at first because I was using the wrong needle size, but I must confess I love it now and the drape you get from lighter weight fabrics is great for garments. I’m excited to see you expand your garment weight fabric offerings.
Always have been and always will!
michelletripper(at)yahoo(dot)ca
I finally started using jersey knit to sew with. I bought a ball point needle and it makes it much easier. I’m liking it! I’ll have to branch out to other types of fabric too.
It is not so much a type of fabric, but I want more ideas on what to do with my finished hand embroidery panels. You can only have so many “samplers” on the wall!
I made a little A-line dress for my daughter with corduroy and had no problems. I would love to make something with that Soul Blossoms corduroy. I’m also thinking about trying some projects with laminates.
I’ve just purchased some linen and voile. Am excited to see how these fabrics blend with regular cotton fabrics. Thanks for a chance to win some great fabric.
I’ve mostly used quilting cotton and linen or linen blends. I did just get some voile for my birthday and am looking forward to using it.
Weights other than quilting cottons make me a little nervous. With the right pattern and instruction, though, I think I could handle it.
I have been trying to use more knits, especially so I can reuse tshirts I would otherwise be throwing out, and would like to see tutorials on the basics of working with knit. Nothing is going horribly wrong with what I’m doing, but I’m sure I’m not doing it the “right” way either
I bought a bunch of swimsuit fabric. Who can resist when it is $10 per yard for a super wide yard? I wish all fabric was that wide… I am going to try my hand at a free pattern from burdastyle. I would love to see more swim tutorials.
Corduroy would be fun for making bags, any tips would definitely be helpful! I want to try silk as well but fear the slippery factor !!
I usually just stick to quilting cottons, but I have experimented with laminates before. I’d love a tutorial about knits though.
Like most of the other posts, I have had bad experiences with different fabrics, so I stick to quilting cottons. Mabye a tut that would help us to “branch out” into some thicker fabrics. Thanks for the giveaway! Amy
So far sticking with quilting cottons …
I am new to sewing and am staying with cotton for now
I am just getting into sewing so I haven’t really ventured into any materials yet! I’d love to see step by step tutorials on anything you’d be willing to make.
I haven’t tried new fabrics because my LQS hasn’t carried any. Would love to try some.
I don’t branch too far. I did sew some clothes with eyelet and other embroidered cotton fabric, though. That was new.
I’m a new sewer and would love to know more about sewing with stretchy material, jersey. Perhaps a tute for a cute sundress in jersey?
I’m just getting into sewing and haven’t really tried any specific fabrics! I’d love to see step by step tutorials on techniques that are helpful and tricks to make sewing easier!
I saw a beautiful voile quilt with bamboo batting that I am so excited to try. It was so soft but warm. The perfect California quilt!
I have been using knits and would love some maxi dress tutorials. Also I would love to make something with eyelet material, I envision a nice flowy summer dress.
Lately I have been making clothes for my little girl. A cord skirt tonight which is new to me. I’ve also been playing a little with Jersey knits. This is something I would love to learn more about. Jersey scares me a little but I would love to sew with it.
I’d like to try working with some stretchier fabrics, to make stretchy kids yoga pants, etc.! Thanks for the tutorials!
I have sewn some knits this year. I haven’t tried voiles yet but I am very tempted.
I’m a chicken and tend to stick to the “ordinary” – cottons and occasionally a knit here or there. I would love to do something with a corduroy some day. A dress for my daughter perhaps. I have sewn with some laminates and chalkcloth.
I’d love tutorials on gift-appropriate things for guys – I have four brothers plus a dad, father-in-law, plus my young son and nephews. They are the hardest when thinking “handmade” gifts.
I’m still trying to learn the basics of sewing so I haven’t branched out beyond regular cotton fabric.
I’d really like to learn more about how to handle laminates: special threads or attachments, certain patterns or projects that lend themselves to that material, etc. Love the fabrics you showed us, and hope I can win a piece! Thanks, SMS!
The kids love the softer fabrics, so I would love some tutorials on how to sew with knits and voile. I have never tried the voile.
I LOVE varying fabrics and prints. I think it makes a statement and can really stand out.
Corduroy- be still my beating heart!
I’ve started sewing with knits more. I still don’t have it perfected but I’m not intimidated by them.
I have always used a wide variety of fabrics, from the thinnest jersey knit to the heaviest canvas duck cloth. I do stick to natural fibers, however, as they simply feel better to work with and to wear.
I personally love to work with knits, but I do know that many, many sewing mamas fear these stretchy fabrics. I’d love to see a well done, comprehensive tutorial on sewing with knit fabrics that I could link to for others.
I’ll chime in on the desire to voile based tutorials. I feel like I’ve only seen the voile used in lightweight scarves – what else can I do with it? Thanks!
i love voile and lawn for summer items but sometimes i’m not quite sure what to do with them because they are so sheer. i’d like to venture into sundresses but i don’t know if lining/underlining would take away from the lovely light qualities that make voile/lawn so wonderful in the first place.
beautiful fabrics!I like all types of fabrics, but I prefer light and coloured ones…light cottons…lawn…poplin, because I like spring and summer clothes!so…I’d like tutorials about dresses in light fabrics…I have difficulties with jersey, so I’d like a tutorial with advices about how to sew jersey with a sewing machine (not with the overlocker).thanks!!!
I’m been so scared of Linen.. but I’m starting to work with it more and more. Its a wonderfully cool fabric but so freaking expensive. I had 8 yards of linen that took me over a year to get up the courage to cut!
I interested in working with jersey but scared to take the jump to knits.
no sewing due to a move, but I have not gotten past simple cottons or linens. Very interested in corduroy though.
Felt! I’ve been making felt tangram sets for toddler and preschooler gifts. I’ve also been discovering the fun and challenges of working with burlap. I’d love to learn how to sew collapsible burlap totes like I saw in a home store.
I would love to make an airy tunic with some voile. Thank you so much!
I am a quilter so I mostly use cotton fabric. I am also a gramma, which gives me opportunities to use other fabrics when sewing garments for the kiddos.
I have been collecting some silks, but haven’t gotten up the courage yet to start sewing with it! Would love some advice!
I have been trying to use more solids. I would love to see a tutorial or project using all solids. There are some BEAUTIFUL colors out there!
me me me!
I have some knit in my closet right now that I am going to use for a skirt. As soon as I get up the courage!
I usually work with cotton and cotton flannels. A tutorial to work with voile is a great idea!!
How I love corduroy! But I don’t know how to finish the thicker seams without having lumpy bits that my machine does not like. It’d be great to have some tutorials on construction/finishing techniques for heavier fabric please
I generally stick with quilters cotton, but I want to try sewing clothes with voile or rayon. These are so beautiful!
I used to sew with all types of fabric when my kids were young for clothes, costumes, etc. Now, just cotton for quilts.
I’m kind of new to doing my own projects (helped my mom when I was a kid), and just within the last year, I’ve finally picked up the sewing machine again. I’d love some fabric to help me learn!
I have been branching out into new types of fabric. But I am still a traditional quilter. So I would love to see modern fabrics made into traditional patterns. Not wonky cuts, but lovely Stars, Baskets, Log Cabins, and nine patches etc.
I admit that when I think of corduroy I think of stiff, unforgiving fabric. I’m curious to see if this corduroy is softer or more forgiving.
I don’t have a serger. But I want to learn how to sew with knits. Also- I find that my local fabric stores aren’t cutting it when it comes to fabric for apparel. I need tougher, more well-made stuff. Where do I go?
I recently tried seersucker (loved it) and I have some cotton gauze I still need to use. I used cords and upholstery fabric, knits, linen… I would like to try voile and leather. Any tips or tutorials would be great.
I just selected a gorgeous price of poly plus Lycra for a fall outfit…wish me luck, I have not done sewing like this ( for myself-garment) for years
I just got renewed vigor to make some clothes for my two year old girl. Would love to win some!
Look at all those beautiful fabrics!! Looking forward to Monday’s announcement!!
I’ve been trying stretch knits this summer. With some success and some duds. I really want to sew with it and have awesome clothes that fit me well. I’d love some tutorials on getting a good fit using patterns.
I mostly sew with cottons as I’m not a huge fan of wearing synthetics and therefore don’t buy a lot of them, but I love the look of mixing textiles for accessories (purses, headbands, etc.) and should probably be more adventurous in my fabric selections….
I’ve only used cottons so far as I am really new to quilting. I love reading on how to use other fabrics as someday I hope to be good enough at this to give them a try.
I am fairly new to sewing and at first, would buy any and all fabrics that came on sale at my local fabric store, but then, I started to realize, that as a newbie, so fabrics sewed up more easily than others. So I stopped trying other fabrics until I could at least sew a fairly straight line.
Now, with a little more experience under my belt, I am just beginning to try some new fabrics and textures. I have two nieces and I am so happy to see corduroy has come a long way since the 60s!
Thanks
Laura
Well, I am new to sewing and have pretty much stuck to basic cotton fabrics that are easy to work with. I am starting to venture into new types like fabrics with stretch and slinky fabrics. Last week I even tried a project with iron-on vinyl (didn’t quite turn out like I wanted, but good enough for a first try!)
I just bought my very first stretchy knit to make myself a skirt!
I’ve been working a little with knits lately. Knits used to scare me until I got a serger.
I love trying different fabrics, but te one thing I am scared of is stretchy fabric. Would love to see tutorials on different kinds and what to do with them! And of course, I would love to win.
I love to try new and different fabrics. I read in a blog on a smaller project they used tissue paper top and bottom of the laminate fabric with a slightly larger stitch so it would tear away easier, but have not tried this yet:)
I’ve just been branching out into sewing from knitting – so yes, for sure I’ve been branching out into ALL new types of fabric!
This blog is amazing, thanks so much!
I’ve been starting to sew with vinyl recently, which is a little daunting. I don’t think I would have branched out into it, but it’s for a costume, so it’s a little necessary.
Anything sheer, I just don’t get it.
I’m still learning how to sew with just cotton blends. Would love to see a tutorial on making ties for little boys!
i’d love to branch out and try new fabric…but i would love a tutorial first! these are some lovely prints–can you help with voile or rayon??
I second the calls for tutorials on voile and corduroy. There’s so many awesome prints on these but I’m afraid to buy any before I have some sense of how to work with them.
I recently backed a pieced cotton baby quilt with fleece, and was a little nervous about it stretching or slipping around on my sewing machine, but I didn’t have time to do it by hand. My fretting was for naught; it turned out just fine, and I’ll try it again next time I want to make an extra cozy throw.
I’m still fairly new to sewing and am terrified of other fabrics. I’m tempted by corduroy and will probably try that this winter. I’m just proud of myself that I’m putting flannel backing on a baby quilt…wish me luck.
I don’t know if I’ve been branching out too much to new fabrics. But I am being better about matching the correct fabric to the project.
I’ve played around a bit with Rayon Challis and really love the way it feels, but it’s so hard to find where I live.
I’ve been branching out into home decor fabrics, I love that I can make sturdier things with it – like floor pillows, totes, and bags.
I’ve also been practicing with knits – which are still a bit scary but I love how comfy things made with them are. I need some ideas for what to make with a fine rib knot (got some at 99C/Yd)
A tutorial about the importance of choosing the right fabric would be great, as would anything about slinkier or heavier fabrics.
I’ve been eyeing voile but am too scared to take the plunge.
I haven’t branched out beyond cotton yet. I’m sticking to what I know for now, but I’m still learning!
I’m tentatively playing about with voile at the moment and am having trouble with it puckering a bit. I’d love to see some tutorials on things to make with voile – oooh, especially something like a little nightdress or similar – that would be fab!
I’m tentatively playing about with voile at the moment and am having trouble with it puckering a bit. I’d love to see some tutorials on things to make with voile – oooh, especially something like a little nightdress or similar – that would be fab!
I saw a tutorial recently for a “shag pillow” made using knit fabric. I’ve never sewn before with anything other than cotton-based cloth, but I’d like to give it a try!
I love corduroy! Makes such cozy pants for my kiddos!
I’ve mostly been using quilting cottons and home dec fabric for totes/bags/purses, but I’m just starting to venture into clothes. (Made my first skirt last night!) The sheer array of different weights/fabrics for apparel is kind of mind-boggling to me! I think I’m going to start with voile and maybe a knit next.
I keep wanting to branch into silk- I have a lot of blank ready-to-dye silk my grandmother left me, but I haven’t been brave enough to paint/quilt it yet. Working up the courage- I’m just afraid it will be really slippery.
I’ve mostly been working with cottons. I tried to alter a thrift store knit something or other and it didn’t exactly work out. I can’t seem to get the fabric to lay properly. Would love some tips! Also there’s this adorable corduroy fabric with birdies on it that someone gave me, and I have no idea what to make with it or how to sew with it. Thanks!
This summer, I have ventured from quilting cottons and now have a stack including voile, stretch cotton poplin, knit and pique. Now i have to get brave to sew with it! I’m excited to see the lawn in this post!
I have not used lighter weight fabrics. Not sure what to do with them and how to sew with them. thanks for the lovely giveaway.
I bought some laminated cottons, but I haven’t sewn with it yet. Other than that, I haven’t ventured out into other types of fabric.
I’ve been doing more garment sewing and am thrilled to see Soul Blossoms in rayon! I’d love to see tutorials on how to work with fabrics with more drape, like voile, lawn, and rayon!
I live in Florida and use cotton almost exclusively. When it’s 95 outside with 90% humidity, you just sweat. The cotton helps you cool off when you get inside.
I’m new to sewing in general, and was blown away when I started discovering how many different types of fabric there are! I’ve been sticking to cotton, but am itching to use oilcloth or the like for some things outside.
Would love to try something in corduroy. I love the texture, but not sure how to work with it.
Love to add pieces of corduroy into patchwork projects! Haven’t sewn with Voile yet..need to give it a try! Love those AB corduroy prints.
I have just started making shopping bags and purses. Most of them call for interfacing, but do not specify weight. I have found this critical for certain styles. I would love a tutorial on how to choose an interfacing. (By the way, bags made from Amy Butler fabrics have received rave reviews! Glad to see them in your store.)I would also like information on how to coordinate fabric, thread wt., and needle size to get the strongest, longest lasting seams. Thanks.
I am afraid of knits because I had several experiences that didn’t turn as great as I would have liked. So, tutorials for sewing knits would be appreciated. Also, I always like to see new home decor tutorials. Thanks for your great work! I love your blog!
Honestly with a baby around, I haven’t sewn much lately so haven’t tried out different fabrics recently. What better way to get me back in the groove than to win some fabric!!!
I have some lovely cotton voile and some really gorgeous wool jersey. Both of which are intimidating me right now. I hear that super lightweight fabrics can be harder to manage and I’ve never had great luck with knits which makes me loath to cut into this beautiful (and expensive) jersey.
I use quilting cotton the most and have used some corduroy. I would like to try using voile. Thanks for the chance.
I’m a big wuss. I stick with cottons mostly. I sometimes venture into linen blends or decorator weight fabric. HA! It’s just a sign of my personality – very cautious. I would like to give that courderoy a shot. I think it would make a really cute bag. I agree with Isabelle – more tutes on sewing with knits.
I have been sewing more with knits recently because my three-year-old daughter prefers them (they move with her and they are easier to get on and off as she is learning to dress herself). There seems to be tons of skirt and pant patterns and tutorials out there that can be used for knits but not so many tops…would love to see some simple knit T-shirt tutorials. It’s great to start with basics and then I could modify and or embellish if I have the time/inclination.
I actually started sewing on knits and find them much more forgiving in terms of final fit, etc than sewing on woven fabrics. I’d love some more tutorials using knits!
I love working with knits now! When Patty Young & Oliver & S brought out their lines, I was hooked! I even finally bought a serger which I love. It’s a wholr new world of sewing for me!
I usually stick to cotton because I know it’s easy to sew, but I’d like to learn to sew with knits.
I just made a quilt top with mostly cottons, but I also included a synthetic silk and a stretchy nylon…both were tough to get right! I’ve had trouble with knits and other stretchy fabrics in the past, so tutorials on that would be great.
I just bought some seersucker fabric, for the first time. I’ve been wanting to try knit, but I’m too big of a wuss.
I have to admit I have been staying inside my little box lately with just buying cotton fabric!! But I did purchase a little bit of knit to experiement with….wish me luck!!
Can’t say I’ve been using a lot of different fabrics as I’m just starting to get the hang of sewing, but LOVE these fabrics!
I have great plans to make a corduroy quilt!
I’d like to work with voile or lawn, to make some pajamas. And decor weight fabrics as well, for purses.
I would like to use some sheer kind of synthetic fabric to cover a horrible, ugly ceiling at our house. Kind of drape it from the ceiling. Typically I try to stick with fabrics that aren’t too stretchy as I’m a bit of a novice seamstress. I have sewn vinyl into a number of projects though. Sometimes I pick up fabrics at thrift store and use them for things like dog beds or other little bags or holders I need around the house.
I did my first (very small) sewing project with fake leather recently. It actually went better than I had expected.
I have tried working with a few different fabrics and some have been easy and some have been frustrating. I would like some tips on working with voile. Great new fabrics. I love them!
I have used nothing but cotton and linen. I would love to branch out, but I am always so excited about the feeling of great cotton. Thanks for the chance!
I sew mostly with cotton or cotton blend fabrics but tried sewing with corduroy this past winter. I still prefer the cotton. Thanks for a chance to win.
twelve30{at}gmail{dot}com
I’m really tempted to dabble in voile because a friend of mine said it’s the ideal little girl dress fabric. I really want to feel it so I understand better what it is!
I’m still a novice sewer and haven’t yet gotten past cotton!
Wow! I love reading all the responses to this. Makes me feel so much better about also being a ‘cautious’ sewer. I tend to still with the decor fabrics and cottons as well, just for bags and clothing for my daughter. But this year she wants to be a princess for Halloween and that requires tulle and satin, yikes!!! Would love to see some tutorials on working with those two fabrics. I have no experience with that.
I stick with cottons…brightly colored cottons.
I am new to the sewing game, so I’m learning ALL about different types of fabric etc.
have started exploring linens and LOVE THEM. can’t believe its taken me this long!
As a beginner, I tend to be very cautious with fabrics, but I think I need to get over that and branch out! I need to hit the remnant bins for “intimidating” fabrics that I can practice on.
Well I am a quilter at heart, but have been branching out and making lots of bags lately…but I’m trying to get into some garment sewing..and am trying to overcome my fear of knits!
I’ve sewn more with some heavier fabrics, but mostly I have been sticking to the normal quilting cottons!
i haven’t tried voile yet, but i would love to! and honestly, i just have trouble sewing on knits…
I’ve tried sewing with knits lately since they are so great for kids clothes. Thanks for the great giveaway! Those new fabrics are gorgeous!
I haven’t branched out very far, but I am making a quilt right now using some shot cottons which I’ve never done before. I love how light the shot cottons are!
I have been working with mostly cotton because I’m still a beginner but I’m thinking of trying knits because of the cool dress tutorial posted this week. I’d love to see more women’s clothing with these beautiful prints–summer dresses? Thanks for posting so many cool things!
I know there’s going to be some hate, but I just bought a bunch of polyester print fabric, because the colors were so vibrant and I need to make some work skirts that I can take on the road that won’t wrinkle and can be washed in the tub quickly.
I also have a lot of upholstery fabric sample books that I want to play with and make something patchworky out of.
I’ve used quilting weight cotton, corduroy, twill, and canvas. I would like to try making some clothes with lawn and knit. I’d love some more knit fabric tutorials for both children and women. kristie_keely(at)yahoo(d0t)c0m
I love all fabrics! I think I have sew on almost every type of fabric at different times of my life! Can’t wait to see what you will be adding to your collection!! LOVE IT ALL!!
I mainly still with cotton….but I have been thinking of trying jersey. Some tutorials using jersey would be cool!
I’m thinking of working with oilcloth since I saw your tutorials and links.
I have been in a fabric rut, but it’s not a terrible rut
There are just too many quilter’s cotton choices!
sweetbeebuzzingsATgmailDOTcom
I like to incorporate thrift store fabric finds into the bags, so I have ended up with lots of different types of upholstery fabrics. The bags end up being sturdy and a combination of prints and solids. Best recent find was some high-quality, light-weight denim; looks fantastic with almost any other print I have in my stash.
I usually stick with cotton, but I have used some corduroy and I would love to do more….
I’ve just started trying corduroy. It’s kind of fun and such a different look! Thanks for sharing.
i’ve been using an alarming amount of cotton lawn and voile lately. mostly because it’s summer and they’re easy to work with. not a big fan of linen but i may give it a try in the future.
I just bought my first Charmeuse to sew my first dress for myself! A little excited, a little nervous. Little kids don’t have curves and I definitely do. This will be much different than what I have been sewing…
Thanks for the giveaway!
I’d love to learn how to use corduroy. I got a pattern to make pants for my toddler but I’m too scared to try anything but cotton! I don’t know what type of needle/thread/stitch/tension to use to avoid ruining the project or breaking a sewing machine (once I get a new one…broke the one I had and it’s not repairable)
I’m trying out seersucker to make shorts and a dress. How great is it that it supposed to be wrinkled!
After working with knits, I’ve branched out into that unusual fabric – woven cotton! It’s a challenge and a bit scary because it doesn’t have the give that knits have, and I’ve been working on fitted garments so it’s been a nice challenge but it also means that I have to be more precise in my measurements. I’ve also made swimsuits for myself and my children, and swimsuit fabric turned out to be quite easy to use – even easier than regular knits.
I mostly just use quilting cotton, but recently started dabbling in making clothes with other fabrics that I picked up from the thrift store. I am going to try voile next, and i am excited!
Mostly quilting cottons but recently picked up some rayon/silk blend to attempt a dress for my daughter…Yikes
I haven’t tried other fabrics, but I really want to make a bag with corduroy.
I mostly sew clothes, so I have worked with cottons, voiles, corduroy, knits, fleece. More information on working with floaty wovens (that new AB rayon, satin, etc) would be great!
I’m about to branch out into voile. Starting today! Eeeks! Going to make the quick change pant from Ana Maria Horner! Would love to see tips/tutorials for working with it and with knits. Thank you!
I’ve started branching out into knits but tips on making knits look more professional (less puckering or stretching) is always helpful.
I’ve used some lawn and voile and I’m tin king about corduroy for some fall sewing. Tutorials are always great!
I don’t think I have been actively quilting long enough to branch out on fabric types. Well, unless you want to count the flannel I am using for the backing of a quilt I am just finishing up for my son.
Knit, knits, knits! I’m new to sewing and would love more help with knits!! Love this site!!
I am glad to see knits returning. It has been hard to find good knit fabric. Used to do a lot of sewing with it. Would love refresher tutorials on how best to use today’s knits.
I’m not sure enough of my skills to branch out into unfamiliar fabrics, but I did just buy some courdoroy for a skirt, so maybe I’m starting to get there.
I’ve been experimenting with corduroy and knits a little bit. Now that it’s summer I just have more time to try out new things. I think corduroy is pretty easy to work with, but knits are a little more challenging. I would like to see more tutorials for women’s tops.
I just started sewing with knits, and I’m getting the hang of it. I’d like to start using both lighter- and heavier-weight wovens for some of the clothes I make for my daughter. Quilting cotton doesn’t always cut it.
I’ve been wanting to experiment with knits more. I have a serger but I’m not very comfortable using it yet. I’d also love to do some projects with corduroy as soon as the budget allows. :0)
I’ve been quilting with cottons and flannels but I’m thinking about adding some other fabrics. I’d like to add more textures to my quilts.
please show me the best way to use voile in quilting!
I have been working mainly with cotton for quilting and I have been short on time lately because I have an infant. I would love to start making some cute fall jumpers for her in corduroy!
I use a lot of knits! They’re just so comfortable for children’s clothes. And voile, and sometimes cords. I probably buy more other fabrics than quilting-weight cottons. Thanks for adding more variety!
I would love to try out making lunchbox bags out of the coated fabric, and getting better at zippers!
I am such a beginner sewer, I haven’t branched out enough yet!
I have been venturing into knits although they still scare me a bit!
I like combining linen with cotton in quilt projects for some texture.
I’m a fan of many kinds of fabric – as long as they are not polyester. Different fabrics for different applications. It takes time to learn how each fabric acts – especially knits.
I usually stick with decor fabric and cotton prints for my projects! I make wallets, handbags, accessory bags, laptop cases, etc…but have started to branch out using stretch knits to make sundresses! I’m still figuring out the best way to approach stretch fabrics!
I have just started working with knits. I made my 4 y/o a dress and it went much easier than I expected. I am preparing to make leggings for my 9 y/o. I would love more tutorials using knits. especially for kids.
voile seems to be pretty trendy right now but i really don’t know anything about it, i’d like to know more about sewing with different apparel fabrics as i’m still sewing with cotton.
I usually stick to cottons and natural fabrics. Considering switching to only organics due to my allergies (ah…choo!) but still have to consult with my wallet.
And, of course I’ll be stopping by on Monday, I stop by everyday!
I started backing my quilts with different fabrics, mostly flannel and fleece, but sometimes velvet or other ’soft and fuzzy’ just depending on what I have. With the fleece I’ve been eliminating the batting to minimize bulk.
I usually stick with my tried and true cotton as well as decorator weight, and have dabbled in knits. I know there’s a lot of knit tutorials, but I still feel like I need to know more!
I admit it…I’m a fabric coward! Only cotton for me in my quilts. I have made a tote using outdoor fabric though!
I’ve been trying to work with knits (specifically bamboo rayon knit) and I don’t have a serger, so it’s been a challenge. I was trying to sew them with my Singer Simple and some iron-on interfacing, and while I eventually got it to work, I hated picking the bits of paper interfacing out of the stitches afterward! I ended up temporarily giving up on it.
I recently upgraded to a Janome DC2011 and it is AWESOME! I figured out yesterday that using the walking foot on knits works pretty well and I think I can skip using the interfacing. I’m going to give knits another try!
I’d love to play with lawn fabric. Just wish it wasn’t so expensive…
I just bought some jersey knit and I’m going to make a skirt out of it.
I recently bought some baby-wale corduroy, but I haven’t cut into it yet. I think it’s great to see so many new types of fabric made available. I’m anxious to try voile, too!
I have been using home decor fabric lately, it works great for a purse with more body and shape.
right now I’m just collecting cotton fabric – eventually I’ll make a quilt…
Having a new baby has meant branching out into laminated cottons! There are so many cute new patterns to choose from for diaper changing pads and chair covers.
I am often scared to branch out to fabrics I haven’t used before, but if I find a great tutorial I think I would be more willing to.
I have been working mostly with quilting cotton, but I have received some cotton/linen blend fabric as a gift recently. I have a bunch of good ideas how to use this and can’t wait to get started.
I’ve been exploring knits in sewing clothes for my little girl. Bamboo knit is particularly yummy! What gorgeous fabrics you’ve inspired us with today.
I’m dying to try a knit dress now that I have a serger, I just need to find the right pattern!
Trying to get back in to sewing! New fabric would be awesome.
i’m relatively new to sewing, so i’m just finding out which are the best types/quality of fabric to quilt with. but i’d love to try and make some home decor items with a weightier fabric. and i LOVE canvas!
I am so new to sewing. I have worked mostly with cottons while I learn the basics. I am definitely interested and wanting to branch out more.
So far Flannel has been a branching out for me!
I would like any tutorial showing me how to branch out!
I’m stretching my sewing skills by trying out garment fabrics instead of just quilting cottons… things that stretch… a bit scary, but hopefully worth trying out in the long run!
Ihave tried a bit of corduroy, linen and flannel. I think I still like cotton the best for quilts though. The corduroy went nicely for a bag and i would considering doing that again (although I still like canvas for bags).
I haven’t tried any new fabrics, but I love the new stuff coming in!
I have not branched out to any new fabrics. I have been afraid and don’t know how to sew with them. But I would love to win this great giveaway for the opportunity to try out some new fabrics!
I’ve worked with many different types of fabric. I’ve tried the Michael Miller knits, I’ve worked with corduroy, poplin etc. Rayon is a bit more slippery but not too difficult. I despise working with minkee and with satin. That said, I will if I need too. After I comment I’m going to check out the Soul Blossoms Rayon. I’m interested in that!
I would love to see more tutorials for knits as well. I’d love to try sewing with it more, but am too afraid of messing it up!
For quilting I use cotton, but when I make smaller projects I
incorporate whatever works! Felted wool is a favourite.
I have sewed with cotton blends, corduroy, denim, twills and broadcloth but I mostly stick to my quilting cottons now. I do very little clothing sewing. Thanks for the chance to win fabric. The Happy Mochi fabric is so fun and lively.
I use home decorating fabric for purses but have been very curious about and wanting to try others. What stops me is sometimes I have no idea what these fabrics are (voile for instance).
I really want to try laminated fabric for a quilt back to make a picnic quilt that would be good on damp grass. I’ll get around to it one of these days
I’ve been playing with corduroy as a durable fabric for clothes for my little one, but I’ve been seriously considering trying some knit fabric to make something comfortable for myself. I’d LOVE to see a maxi-dress tutorial using a jersey knit.
I have done some work with Levi, but mostly cotton and cotton blends. Sometimes I will embelish clothing with lace. But I do need to branch out. I was given some cordoroy and knit that I would like to find something to do with it. I have 3 boys, so it can be challenging to find cute things to do with fabric, that they like also.
My fabric buying money is a little skimpy these days. To satisfy the urge, I’ve been going to yard sales. I find vintage sheets and tshirts for a bargain. I clean them and start sewing when the mood strikes me. For bigger projects, I have to save up for fabric.
I played around with knits and I have loved them. Come fall I really want to use corduroy is some projects.
I haven’t really used much of anything except cotton because I am primarily a quilter. I have a few other types of fabric, but they mostly end up sitting in my stash forever. Someday I’ll branch out, but for now, I’m a 100% cotton gal!
good to hear about the tips for heavier fabric, maybe I’ll get somebody to give me advice on needle types. The last broken needle flew right at me! very traumatic…
I have been sticking with the same basic materials but I am itching to get into sewing with faux leather for handles and such. Just need to find some that I want to sew up!
I love a lot of the tutorials you’ve had for clothing lately but how shall I say this? They all would only look good on non-curvy women. There is some really cute tutorials but I find them they would like pregnancy clothes on me due to my hour-glass figure. Tunics and tops that flair out at the chest are cute but do not flatter figures with curves.
Perhaps you could offer tutorials for women that are not a size 8 and deal with how to tailor things in (like at the waist and such) to make them flattering? Or how to create tops with empire waists.
But I have to say that I love the Floraburst Blue Happy Mochi Yum Yum fabric. So delicious!
I am about to make a baby dress with chiffon. I hope it goes well!
I have just started to play a little with silk dupponi! using it to embelish bags which has been fun. i have never been comfortable using knits or sewing them, perhaps some tutorials with them???
I’ve pretty much stayed within my comfort zone with quilting cottons & home decor fabric. Deep down inside though, I’d love to branch out in other fabric areas. Like knits, oil cloth, and corduroy.
I’ve been using a lot of cotton prints, have used corduroy, denim, rayon, and recently bought some linen to experiment with, but have done some knits as well–though I have to figure out how my machine (a Shark) can do a better job on those knits…… so I’d love to see more tutorials on sewing with knits as well.
jersey knits. I just got “Growing up Sew Liberated” and found some unused t-shirts here at home and thrift store. I hope to venture into sewing with the knits next week.
I use velvet and corduroy sometimes, and I made a whole quilt of denim. The new fabrics look really nice!
I’m learning how to sew, and I’ve mostly stayed with cotton, although I have a water-resistant polyester that I’m going to try to use on the underside of a picnic blanket I’m making. Hopefully it will go well!
I would love to learn more about sewing with knits. I also love trying to work with more mixed texture, especially love vintage chenille and corduroy.
Thanks for the chance to win!
I just bought some voile for the first time. SO so so pretty and soft but I am not sure what to do with it. I think it is a little sheer for a top for me but I was thinking a nice top or dress for one of my girls. Hope I win!
Thanks
since i’m a beginner, i haven’t branched out. starting w cotton quilting weight was a big enough change for me!
I have sewn quite a bit, more before I had children, but I am starting to pick it up again. I really don’t have much experience with knits though and would love to see some tutorials on them:)
As a quilter I really do prefer all cotton in the quilting weight, so that is what I prefer to make my girls skirts and dresses with too, unless it is some denim. BUt I have really been branching out in patterns, tryng new things, and that has been fun.
I have been using voile and double gauze a lot this summer, and I just got a serger and a bunch of knits, so I’m looking forward to learning new things. I’d love more tutorials on knits or on serging!
I have just started sewing so all fabrics are new to me. I am really enjoying all the things I have made for my daughter. A yard of fabric would be awesome.
I sitck mostly with cotton. However, I recently made some adult bibs using 100% PEVA with polyester backing. Thanks for free fabric Friday!
I mostly sew skirts and dresses for my daughter and I did try some satiny fabric for a Tinkerbell costume recently. I will be making a jumper with corduroy for her soon. I’m interested in how to sew lighter fabrics like voile and how to sew without using a serger.
Ohhhhh such beautiful new prints and colors. I love sewing ALL fabrics. Interesting uses for interesting fabrics would be a great tut.
I’ve just ordered some tencel, which I’m excited to try to make into a top or drapey bodice for a dress. Wish me luck!
As another poster mentioned, I’m just trying to get into sewing garments and would love advice for working with different types of fabric.
I’d like to do more with knits, but I’m not sure how to deal with the stretching. For now it’s just quilter’s cotton.
I’d love to see more about oilcloth, which I thinking about using for some projects around my kitchen.
Knits! Most items off the rack I have to hem to fit, so I usually only buy things that are sturdy to hem. And then I found this awesome knit, long, charcoal grey, maxi skirt at old navy. Which needs to be hemmed. I bought some cheapo knit remnants to practice on. Love these colors!
Amy Butler rayon!! So excited! While not directly fabric-related, tutorials on fitting clothing would be helpful as some of these new fabrics are clearly intended for clothing.
I would love to learn more about knits…I tend to shy away from them but I would love to give them a try!
I love using cotton and am slowly branching out to others-a little intimidating though
The corduroy is fantastic. It reminds me of a pair of pants I had as a child in the late sixties. I mainly sew with cotton but I would love to make something out of viole.
I love the Mochi Yum Yum it reminds me of wonderful summers spent creating in Canada. The colors are so FUN! thanks for sharing.
I am learning how to work with knits because my daughter loves how comfy they are! Plus i am in love with upcycles so I am trying to learn how to make them!
I’m just finishing up a project with vinyl. And I hate it. Back to cotton I go…
I’ve had this bamboo lycra for almost 2 years sitting in my stash. I was too scared to sew with it, but this week decided to get to work on it. I’d love to see some tutorials or posts about working with this finnicky fabric.
Thanks for the giveaway!
I have sewn with all of these types of fabrics, mostly for clothing. Sometimes cotton is just not the right type of fabric for clothing so I love that the great designers (like Amy Butler)have their prints on rayon, corduroy, knits, etc.
I’m pretty much nonstop sewing with lawn and voile cottons right now so I’m glad tonsee you guys expanding. Can’t wait for the big announcement!
I’m going to try a skirt with some of that yummy Amy Butler corduroy so I’d like info on some basics, like which needle size to use and things like that. I’m also curious to try knits sometime soon and tutorials on using knits would be good too, I’m confused by what types are best for which types of projects.
I’ve started to work with knits. My daughter has a bit of a sensory issue with clothing, and the knits seem to agree with her. I would love to see more tuts on how to work with knits.
I’m so afraid of knits too! I really need to just bite the bullet & get used to it! I want to make tshirts but am afraid that they would not be worth wearing. That beautiful line of soul blossoms is gorgeous!! I would like to see more tutorials on bags & pouches & skirts!
I Would love to do more work with shears, also with laces and sequined fabrics. Have tried working with all kinds of fabric but feel really intimidated by fine laces and sheer fabric. More projects on how to use those would be nice. Thanks
I’ve been thinking recently I really need to start using knits more. There is just so much you can do with them!
I’ve been avoiding silk like the plague, which is sad as I love it! It just seems too easy to destroy. Thanks for the chance to win!
I’m a newbie so I stick with cotton…I did try to sew something on to one of my hubbies jersey type shirts the other day and it did not go very well
Great giveaway!
I usually use cottons, mostly because it is what I feel most comfortable wearing. I would love to learn more about working with knits
I’d love to see tutorials for using corduroy in home decorating and sewing with knits, especially in children’s wear. Thanks for the peaks of great new fabrics!
I have been using a lot more fabrics saved from vintage clothes. I scored majorly and got one green velvet suit and one blue velvet dress — I can’t wait to use them.
I’ve been starting to experiment with knits and would love some easy tutorials for sewing knits without a serger. Also, I would love to try out working with voile.
I have been using alot of corduroy for baby shoes and bookbags. I want to try oilcloth but i am a little scared since I have never worked with it. I found out the hard way not to iron outdoor fabric. LOL My husband wanted a cover for his generator so I made one with a velcro closure on the front for easy on and off. Well When making one of the strips for the velcro, not thinking and out of habit I turned it and pressed it. LOL Now I have got to find something to clean all the blue off my iron. Lesson learned. I have quite a few friends with girls and have been using alot of knit for skirts, sleep wear, and cute little dresses. My boys are about to get some nice knit pj’s and boxer briefs. I would love to see how to properly use the oil cloth and I wasn’t sure if I need to take any extra steps while using it. I heart sewmamasew!! Awesome giveaway!!
I have used some voile. I’d love to see some tips on working with it. Do you need to use wider seam allowances? Should it be paired with regular quilting cotton, or not? Etc.
I’ve been sewing since I could reach the pedal and have worked with most types of fabrics. I am a huge fan of voile and poplin is a staple in my stash. Would love to see you guys branching out with your inventory. Keep up the good work!
I’ve been doing quite a bit of sewing with home decor weight lately for large beach totes and I have a stockpile of knits just waiting for me to feel adventurous
I pick up whatever fabric strikes my fancy at the time. (for better or worse!)
I stick to cottons, although I’m currently working on a quilt with knits. I’m more in need of general sewing tutorials, regardless of fabric type. :]
I could really use some new fabrics! I love sewing, but have only made things for my boys, new fabric would be an excuse to sew for myself
)
Hmmm, I’ve been using voile lately and I love it! I’m curious to try some rayon soon!
i love corduroy and would love to see more creative and fun colors and patterns
-t
I just bought some knit for the 1st time, and am hoping to sew an easy shrug with it. I’d love more tutorials for knit and voile. Even though there are so many great prints and colors in these fabrics, I avoid both because I don’t know what to do with them.
I’m hoping to branch out into Amy Butler’s rayon line soon!
Stretchy fabric-I’m a beginner and stretchy fabric is tricky!
I was just looking at corduroy yesterday! I didn’t know Amy Butler did it. I like my bags to have a little more weight to them, so I’ve been looking for heavier fabric!
I’d love to try the voile, or the corduroy. I’m trying to make more clothes for my kids, and quilting cottons sure do wrinkle easily!
I just ventured into knits last weekend! I had seen so many great reviews on the “Tee for Two” pattern that I eventually gathered enough courage to try it. This was my first ever clothing pattern, first time making a shirt (I’ve done a few skirts) and first time using knit. Once I got through a few bumps on the first shirt it was smooth sailing and now I am looking forward to trying more with knit.
I would really like to work with voiles more. They drape so much more flatteringly on a woman’s figure than quilting cotton.
Linen is another I’d like to use more, and knits!
i really want to play with tshirt material. I love jersey dresses, and would love to see a tutorial on how to work the fabric into a comfy cozy weekend dress….
I have been interested in sewing with a few different fabrics, such as silk and lace, which I have never done before. Knits are on my list, too.
I’ve always used a variety of fabric, mostly for apparel and home dec. I like the idea of using different textures within a quilt for the tactile interest. So far though I have used all cotton or all wool for the tops. I have used flannel and fleece for backings also.
I have some laminated cotton for a bag project I want to do, but I’ve been putting it off and working on other things. I do love making scrap quilts with vintage fabric of all kinds mixed with regular quilting cottons – it’s mostly cotton, but different weights and textures go together better than I thought they would.
I stick mostly to cottons and knits. I made some adorable baby pants out of a crazy printed corduroy, but that was just because I liked the print, not the fabric type! Open to trying new things.
I always use print cotton to make things for my boy. It’s also nice to mix textures like corduroy and flannel
LOVE those In the Kitchen prints, and the Corderoy “Soul” prints, and Oh, just ALL OF THEM! You choose!
I find myself staying in my comfort zone. I used to sew much more when my children were little.
Love the new fabrics!
Have a good weekend!
D xo
I stick with quilting cottons, but I love buying new designers!~!
I love the center fabric in the Happy Mochi Yum Yum group by Monica Solorio-Snow and the right and center fabrics from Cookery~ In the Kitchen from Alexander Henry. I have so much fabric right now I’d have to win them. I can’t buy any more!
I worked with a linen blend recently, which I LOVED! And I have some home dec and some knits waiting to be created with. I’d also love to make some back-to-school creations with the new corduroy’s coming out!
Would love more knit options & info about working with rayon challis. Especially tips on how to make them behave on the cutting table!
I have been making and selling children clothes. I have used corduroy, knits, cotton and cotton blends. I love all this new fabric!!
Yes, I have been using cotton voiles for summer clothes because I want something light, airy, and breathable. I love the Anna Maria Horner designs, and would love to see more. Also, I can easily see myself using corduroys and velveteens for pillows, furniture slip covers, sewing machine covers, little boy pants and short-overalls, and possibly bags.
I have been working more with make my son pants so I have been using seersuckers more. I want to try corduroy next for fall Love the new fabric.
I will try to sew any fabric but only with the right machine, needles, and settings. Fabrics determine the tools we need to use and some require special machines.
Yes, I do use different fabrics. Vinyls and upholstery fabric add stability and a different dimension to tote bags.
I’m just venturing into the world of garments and am really excited about it! I’m also excited for the world of new fabrics it opens!
Ok, I love the idea of branching out. But, I have so many projects on my mental todo list for sewing. Can I add another? Oh, you’ve convinced me. I want to try voile.
I have been trying to sew more with vintage fabrics, like found in antiques stores or garage sales. I love old flour sack cloth, etc. However, it poses some challenges. I would love more tutorials or tips and tricks for working with them. the widths are narrower, some are thinner fabric, should i wash it first or not, will stains come out or not, should i use a different needle. . .oh, the questions i have!
I have been branching out because I am expecting a little girl. I have a precious boy who I have loved sewing for. With him I seemed to sick with seersucker, gingham and cordory. Now I am SO excited and little overwhelmed by all of the options there are for little girls!!!
I’m venturing into: knits. Da-da-da-dum!
I’m enjoying it! I finally have a great sewing machine that will handle knits well and I’m going to take advantage of it!
I’ve used some voile scraps in my quilting, but haven’t purchased any yardage for larger projects. Corduroy is easy for me to work with, but the more delicate fabrics… not so much. Some sewing tips would be grand!
I generally make do with whatever old stuff we have, what I’ve found in large sizes at the thrift store, or bits of things in the remnant bin — I can’t sew too well, so I try not to buy much fabric until I sharpen my skills a little. So yes, cotton woven, jersey, fleece, corduroy, whatever!
I have always done cotton until just recently. I tried my first flannel quilt and am hooked. That makes the most cozy comfy quilts. The kids love them
Not branching out really at all right now since I’m trying to do my best not to buy any fabric for a while. So far it’s going okay, but there are some things I just can’t resist!
I’ve always stuck mostly to cottons but I’m trying to work with things that have a little less give so that I have to get better with zippers and tailoring!
I am really afraid of jersey.. my machine has aöways trouble and forget stitches. so maybe a tutorial on basic sewing with this kind of fabric would help…
I’m pretty new to all things sewing, so mostly different weights of cotton and some canvas, and fleece. Have some laminated fabric I’m going to try sometime soon, and would love to try knits soon as well!
Oh yes please! I love trying different fabrics. Tips and tricks for using voile and corduroy would be fantastic. Would love some fall corduroy projects.
I’ve messed around mostly with cotton, but previously in my youth ( big laugh here because I’m 30 ) I worked alot with knits. I started sewing at 11 and worked with knits alot, however I dropped working with them in my early twenties.. late teens.. making clothing is something I plan on getting back into.
I would love advice on mixing weights of fabric, velvets and corduroys accompanying cottons and satins,Or am I just mad?
I’m leery of ordering fabric online without ever having worked with it or felt it before, and I’m finding it hard to find a truly local “good” fabric store in my area. I’ve heard rumors, though, that a new quilt shop is going to be coming to my neighborhood! Until then, I use thrifted vintage sheets for most of my projects
Thank you for the opportunity to receive a piece of beatiful fabric!
I’ve been making lots of Barbie clothes for my daughters, which gives me a chance to experiment with lots of fabric choices. I’ve already done denim and knits and I’ve got some fancy, just-right-for-a-four-year-old gold lame that will be making Barbie look more glam than ever. I’d happily welcome anything you want to teach me about sewing with knits. Thanks!
I primarily use cotton for quilting, but do like to work with heavy weights when I make bags, curtains or upholster things. All the fabrics you shared are beautiful. But I have a project in mind that Soul Blossoms would be perfect for. Yes, it touches my soul.
SewCalGal
http://www.sewcalgal.blogspot.com
I sew mostly for my 2 daughters so have started with quilting cottons. I’d like to get into some jersey but haven’t mustered the courage yet. As for the heavier fabrics, i’ve used some in tote bags and in a computer sleeve. What i’m currently dreaming of is making a courdoroy dress for my 3 year old for the fall/winter, but i can only get solid dark colours locally. I dream of pretty cordouroy!
I’ve not so much been working with different fabrics as with bolder brighter prints instead of my usual drab stand-bys. I think voile would work well with a few of the patterns I have, so I have been wanting to try it but haven’t yet.
Soul Blossoms CORDUROY? Soul Blossoms RAYON? Sounds wonderful!
I made a Martha Stewart tube dress with jersey. It is so comfy! I want more!
I recently started experimenting with terry cloth. I am making some really cute embelleshed hooded towels for my kids as well as for baby shower gifts. I have broken a few needles while figuring out how to tackle it on my machine, but I am making great progress.
I’d love to use some of the new designer fabrics – certainly voiles and maybe corduroy. The price has kept me from doing it, though. For now, I’m just stickin’ with the cotton.
I have been trying to sew swimsuits lately (just cut out the pattern for the swimsuit on your site today!, hopefully it will be ready for my trip on monday!) I would love more tutorials on swimwear and swimwear fabric.
Hooray for new fabrics in new substrates!
As a beginning sewist I’m experimenting with going beyond quilting cottons. I’ve used corduroy, acetate lining, voile, poplin, and basic cotton knits in re-fashioning t-shirts. I still need more practice with knits of all sorts and understanding just what makes each different and for what garments each is used. Thanks for being a great sewing and sewing information resource.
I usually use cotton but have ventured into stretch knits a little… But quilter’s cotton with all it’s gorgeous colors and prints will always be my first love!
I just started to teach myself to sew in February of this year, and the only fabrics I have attempted to sew on have been cotton or cotton/blend and home dec. I have also sewn with some cotton that had some iron on interfacing, but other than that, I haven’t sewn enough to try different fabrics. I would like to see some tutorials that use water proof fabric, so I can line my little makeup bags. Thanks for the opportunity to win FREE FABRIC!
I usually sew with cottons but would really like to try knit. All tips are appreciated!
I have been sewing with voile and knits recently. I am slowly learning. I chose to add these fabrics to my repertoire because i like sewing garments for my daughter and occasionally, myself too. These are soft and comfortable to wear and they arnt as prone to wrinkle as quilt weight cottons. I still love the varitey I can find in cottons so I think I may start quilting—un familiar teritory for me. I like the serging tips for knits at indietutes.com
I haven’t much, but mostly because all I do is quilt. But I do have hopes of sewing up some easy clothes patterns, so in the future, it’s definitely a possibility.
I am doing way more flannel but that is because I am sewing for two new to arrive grand babies. I would love to see more tutorials for gift items. Both baby and gifts that we can start now for Christmas.
I think I have a fear of matching colors. I see the sets above and they look great together, but I probably would walk into a fabric store and think those clashed. I’d love to learn how to sew anything other than cotton blends.
I’m not very experienced, but I would like to try sewing knits and corduroy (for fall).
I love madras cotton but it is so rare to see it in the shops or on the internet.
ps. So nice to see Amy Butler’s corduroys – such a change from the spriggy flowers you normally get.
I usually work with cottons, I guess i am stuck in my ways. I do have some corduroy that i might try to do something with soon.
I actually incorporated a piece of silky fabric into quilted pillow top that I made yesterday. (one of my first ventures sewing with it!) and boy was I frustrated!!! It was fraying all over the place and I felt like my needle was too big for the delicate fabric. Ug! It looked so pretty once I was done but I promised myself not to do that again!
I think I’ll stick with cottons:)
I’m LOVING the Happy Mochi Yum Yum by Monica Solorio-Snow!!! That is the best fabric I’ve seen in a long time.
I just love FABRIC !!! If it’s fabric, I will sew it, serge it, weave it, knot it, glue it, just about anything!! I’m just always looking for new designs….interesting graphics…colors!!! I love this blog
I would be interested in more polyester fabrics to sew no iron dresses with!
I stick to woven fabrics. I’m terrified of knits, but I figure that I’ll have to try it eventually. I like sewing with home decor weight, quilting weight. Linen is pretty easy too.
I’m a novice and trying to use some different fabrics. Made my first baby blanket set with minky on one side and cotton on the other. Turned out great once i figured out how to work with the two fabrics together and not have puckering. It would be helpful to know more about thread type when working with two different fabric types.
I mostly use quilting cottons but would like to make canvas bags for my nieces.
I mostly use cottons. I occasionally branch out, but I don’t really know how to work with more difficult fabrics, so I usually give up fairly quickly.
I am interested in learning about knits, just don’t know how to start! Love the site =)
corduroy. i like the softness & the texture.
I’m just starting out so everything is a dabble right now
I am trying to make the granddaughters birthday gifts so am using a variety of fabrics. Any tutorials on kids gifts or crafts would be great!
I will do dec fabric or corduroy as well as lots of cottons. I would love to try voile or oilcloth, but they’re just so pricey!
I’d love to see how to make things with knit — without using a serger!
I’ve been using quilting cottons mostly. Would love to try some kind of knit.
I work mostly with quilting cotton but have used corduroy for a couple of bags I made. I would love to see more tutes geared towarded beginner & novice sewers.
I haven’t really experimented much beyond cotton fabrics. However, I did recently experiment with elastic thread. Every tutorial I looked at had completely different guidelines for using it. I took bits of info from all sorts of resources and eventually found what worked best for me and my ~40 year old sewing machine.
I would love a good tutorial on working with corduroy for making jumpers for my daughters.
I would like to see more simple clothing tutorials for adults.
I’m wanting to get into knits to start making my own clothing. I live where it’s hot and wearing cotton is sometimes the most comfortable fabric.
I’m currently obsessed with felt. It’s so fun to sew!
I recently branched out into knits so that I could make my daughter hip-looking clothes, but still ‘made by mom’. also voile and rayon for skirts that hang nicely.
I’ve only worked with cotton, just because I haven’t bought all that much fabric. I would love to work with voile and linen!
No branching out for me lately. It’s been a baby ball making craze for a while now. So many babies, so little time.
I just picked up my first corduroy, thinking ahead to the midwest fall.
Just cotton, but I’d love to try others…
I mostly quilt so I stick to cottons, but I have used silk/cotton blends and minkee. I have a small stash of non-cottons, but I just don’t buy much because I’m having too much fun with cotton.
I love sewing with quilting cottons, but have been branching out to knits lately, and love them! I’ve got some corduroy on hand too that I can’t wait to make some cute fall/winter clothing out of-I just need to find a good pattern. I love it when one of my favorite designers come out with fun new fabrics (i.e.: Amy Butler corduroy!)
I bought knits but haven’t tried sewing with them yet. I do not have a serger. I just bought some twill and used it to make a bag – I’m definitely trying to find something right in between quilting cotton and canvas for bag making. I love corduroy and used that to make a dog sling – it turned out great! I just used sew-in instead of fusible interfacing. I can’t wait to see what you get in!
Ducky. I was scared to use duck fabric at first because of the weight of it, but I ended up loving it. So far I’ve only used it to make grocery bags, but my favorite thing was that I didn’t have to use interfacing to give the bag extra body and strength. The duck did that for me. It washes good, doesn’t shift, is 100% cotton, and best of all – no attitude from my sewing machine! Even when sewing duck, standard cotton AND the cotton webbing straps all together! Still no ‘tude!
I’ve been sewing with corduroy lately, being Winter here it’s nice to use the thicker fabrics for extra warmth.
Cheers
I love sewing all the new fabrics and having great choices. I’d like to learn more about working with laminates.
Well, I just love the newer, more modern print collections (like some of those shown in this blog post) and I find making bags and little gifts, things for the home, etc., are fun. I like making modern quilts, usually baby or lap size, and landscape quilts also. I use cotton fabrics 99% of the time. Some tuts on dressmaking for a refresher would be wonderful – I’m thinking of trying that again, after many years away from dressmaking. Love your site!
I’ve tried corduroy and canvas and just ordered some voile… hopefully I’ll be able to make something nice with it!
I have only sewed one item with voile – a scarf – I loved the soft feel of the fabric but it sure was slippery to sew with and led to some serious frustration. I may try again…with even more pins!
I bought some super slippery knit that I was thinking of making a nursing top out off, and to test out my serger on. I also bought some voile recently, I made an investment in trying something new, now to just get off the fence and DO IT!
So many of the scarfs that women are wearing so beautifully are voile, but I know that it can pull threads. What is the trick? I would love to make some of the infinity scarves for Christmas.
I’ve been sticking with woven cottons lately, but I’m ready to venture into sewing with knits. I’m interested in making my own clothes!
Hmmmm different fabrics???? I was just working with a soft poly sheer…I prefer 100% cottons. As far as tutorials I would say simple dresses would be lovely.
I have never used anything but cotton. This is mainly because I mainly quilt. I love the laminated fabrics and think that it would be fun to attempt a lunch bag or something similar with that type.
I actually just bought some great velour. Very ’80s, I know, but it’s for parts of a busy book for my nephews.
I like voile but I mostly just like to touch it- feels so nice, almost buttery. I would like to know more about working with voile.
Mmmm…Let’s try some corduroy. Fabric of the kings. Thanks for Free Fabric Friday.
Lovely! I just bought three types of fabric that I’ve never bought before. I’m going to make the baby swim diapers! PUL fabric, Jersey Mesh and Swimsuit material!
Beautiful fabric!
Genevieve
I have a silk that I’m still not brave enough to use and some knit. Would love to see more easy tutorials for children’s clothing using voiles and corduroy. I’m not a pattern kinda gal and I mostly work with cotton right now.
I LOVE all fabrics but lately have especially enjoyed making rag quilts with flannel.
I am sticking to only 100% cotton, quilt weight fabrics — mostly because I make quilts and table runners, and I like using fabrics that are all the same weight!
I would love to see a tutorial that uses flannel fabric to make a quilt to get any hints and tips on what needs to be done differed.
I’m interested in trying voiles and velets. The fabrics look terrific.
I stick mostly with cottons when quilting, but I’ll venture into cords and others when making bags or clothes. Thanks for the opportunity!
Wow! i love the Happy Mochi yum yum! I have recently used vinyl to create some fun cosmetic bags. It was easy to sew, but I had to put paper between it and my presser foot so it wouldn’t stick.
I haven’t really tried any other fabrics but maybe I should think about it!
My biggest branch out into new fabrics has been using chalkboard fabric for the first time. My chalkboard placemats turned out really great!
I have branched out lately. I’ve began to buy solids. Up until now the beautiful patterns always grab my eye and pocketbook, but you just have to have solids to showcase those beautiful patterns, and hey some solids are so pretty they really can stand alone.
I’ve been using cotton/linen blends and find they dye up beautifully! But I think my fave is cotton sateen. Nothing to say but yummy, yummy, yummy!
I’m loving all the new substrates! I just wish that more designers would print on double cotton gauze – I fell in love with it with Heather’s Far Far Away I!
I’ve never met a fabric I didn’t like…still working hard to find one! I do have some velvet and velveteen in the stash that I can’t bear to cut into…
I continue to try to get up the guts to do more with knits. So far mostly in my mind. I actually came to cotton later, after just experimenting with whatever was pretty and learning that cotton is in fact way easier to sew!
I have slowly ventured into knits. Though I’d like to get much more comfortable with it. I also need to conquer my fear of my serger as well
.
I want to know how people are successfully working with voile (not as a clothing fabric). I’ve used it in large patchwork with poor wear. I’d like some tips!
I bought some cotton knit fabric a few months ago. I made a shirt for my daughter, it came out okay. I need to try again.
I decided to be adventurous and sew my girls swimsuits for this summer. It was not as scary as I had thought and they turned out so cute! Next I want to try voile, so tutorials on that would be great!
Cotton is my friend, though I just made a linen tunic out of a Japanese pattern book.
I usually stick with cottons and fleece. I recently tried olean fabric to make some lunch bags and it worked out wonderfully. It’s fun to try different fabrics.
I’ve been trying more knits lately as I’ve been learning to sew cloth diapers, and knits are good for those. Love all the new options out there!
Sewing with knits is something I would love to know more about! I made a baby hat with a knit one time, but I’ve been intimidated by them because I keep reading about how they can be terrible to work with! Tips would be great:)
I’ve been trying to resist buying new fabric, while using what has already been accumulated. So, not much branching out around here. Although, it would be nice to have an excuse to try something new.
I’ve been making doll clothes lately and trying to use knit fabric. I don’t have a serger, so I’d love some tips on sewing knits on a “regular” machine. Sometimes I get waaaay too much stretching!
I’ve been trying to expand my view of fabric by looking right under my nose– at articles of clothing that I nonchalantly have thrown into the Goodwill corner!
I have recently started sewing with knits. Not near as scarely as I thought. Thanks to some great articles on your blog. Thank you!!
I’ve purchased cordoroy, but haven’t sewn with it yet- I do at least have a project planned. I want to try knits, but haven’t been brave enough to purchase any yet! There’s just so many options and I don’t know what would be best to use! Ain’t nothin’ to it but to do it though!
This may be too basic, but I’ve been learning about so many fabric types since I’ve started getting into sewing. Cotton, knit. Pretty simple. But what is voile? What type of projects can you use it for? A primer about the different types of fabric would be helpful. What does each feel like? What would the fabric be best used for? That sort of thing.
For now I have been sticking with 100 percent cotton, but perhaps I should venture out. Love your website! Thanks.
Quilting cottons for me.
I love sewing with knits! I’m going to try quilting. That’s new for me.
aliben7 (at) gmail (dot) com
I have sewn all kinds of fabric, but at this point in my life, i am all for cottons. please, i would love some free fabric!!
I haven’t really been branching out because I have SUCH a big stash of old quilting cotton that I’ve been working my way through. But I’m making progress and I’m looking forward to acquiring some more soon!
In addition to quilters cotton, I love using corduroy and cotton/linen blends. I’ve been looking a getting into decorator weight fabric for purses and handbags.
I’ve been afraid to use knits because I don’t have a serger, so I would especially love some tutorials and tips on how to sew knits with a regular old sewing machine!
I would love to see more on the Home decs… since this is my second choice after quilts, so therefore I mostly sew cottons.
Love your blog…
Thanks Jackie
I have sewed with a lot of different types of fabrics but not laminates. I would like to see tutorials on that.
I’ve been sticking to cotton, with a little bit of linen, which is so slippery that I’ve been hesitant to branch out any farther. I’d love to see spotlights on different kinds of fabrics, with technical information about using them (needles, thread, etc) with any other tips thrown in. Thanks for the chance to win, I love FFFs!
I have ventured out to a lawn for a beach cover up. I’ve used other bases for bags as well. I’m not sure how I feel about it in a quilt. On the surface, I like the idea. I guess it would depend on how accurate my piecing would be.
I have been attempting to work with minky, but it is a little tricky to sew. Any advice or tutorials would be helpful. Thanks!
I’ve been using knits lately. It was scary at first but I’m getting better and love that I don’t have to worry about fraying!
I’d love some tips on how to successfully quilt with silk!
just started using upholstery remnants to make bags/pillows. seems to work ok on my vintage morse machine, but not on my 1990’s singer. love your tutorials and just finished two wallhangings using the fanfold and sliver-cut method on the two inch squares. ingenious!! amazed all my friends at knitting night show-and-tell.
I would love to sew more with corduroy … Seems so versatile … Pillows, clothes, slip covers!
I. Like to mixed it up a bit but mostly use cottons and fleece.
I have used everything, as I have a degree in fibers…now since most of what I do is quilts as gifts I stick with washable and durable quilt shop quality cotton, but I have bins of future projects that include an all wool and all silk quilt (including each respective batting) and knits as in tee shirt quilts for my 4 children with things saved as far back as Star Wars onsies!
I would love tips for working with heavier weight fabrics, fall is coming too soon.
I normally sew with knits, but I’ve been wanting to start sewing with more woven fabrics! I really want to start getting into making more houseware type stuff, and clothes for me!
I’ve tried some projects with laminate. I have a pattern that I’m dying to try that uses poplin and netting.
I have pretty much been doing cottons and cotton blends. I’m liking the voile though.
I’ve got some voile that I’m wanting to cut into before the summer is over, but usually use quilting cotton. I’m thinking that a corduroy quilt for winter would be fun to try…at least for backing.
I use 100% cottons because I love the feel of them through my fingers. However, tonight at a retreat a friend was showing an applique project she made using wools, and I loved it! So now I’d like to try my hand at that; it looks so warm & friendly, and the ones she used had a slight plaid pattern to it, which really excited me.
I mix in corduroy for fall and winter clothing. Fleece and minky for baby gifts. Oilcloth for tote bags. This summer I made a ton of ruffle leg shorts for my little girls from knits. I just purchases my first yards of voile and I’m ready to start with a scarf and then see if I can make a tunic for myself. I will be glad to see more info on different ways to use the varieties of fabric that the designers are starting to produce. Especially helpful would be tips on what changes need to be made on my machine…needles and tensions, etc.
I’ve been tempted by the many oilcloth projects I’ve been seeing lately. Haven’t done anything about it yet but it’s definitely something I want to try soon!
I recently came across some lawn that has a pretty print, but because of the sheerness of the fabric I’m afraid my original dress idea won’t work. I’m mulling it over. I just tried making the yoga skirt from the tutorial. I love it! Simple, inexpensive, cute – what a great project! And it was fun to try working with knit.
I usually use cotton but I’ve been using nylon chiffon for pettiskirts, lately.
Courderoy sounds like fun! I really want to make a courderoy skirt. I just haven’t gotten any to try it yet.
I mainly stick with quilting cotton, but have other types of fabric in my stash (voile, linen, etc). I really want to try knits but am too intimidated! SMS tutes are always so helpful though!
I love the new Soul Blossoms Rayon line. I’d like to see a tute on sewing apparel with rayon fabric. I always love to see women’s tutorials, especially with newer fabrics. Thank you!
i want more corduroy!
Looking forward to using some decorator fabric samples. Will never stop using cottons but it is fun to branch out to silks, velvets and brocades.
I would love to see more tutorials or tips on knits. My projects never turn out the way its supposed to. Thanks
I have sewn on every type of fabric, probably because i have been sewing for soooooo long. Right now it’s quilting cottons/linens. Thanks for the giveaway
I accidentally used a broadcloth or some cotton blend in a quilt. I don’t recommend doing this on accident. Luckily the quilt was for a service project in Hawaii so the finished product looked like waves and we’ll just pretend it was on purpose
I love all the different colorful prints. I’m a beginner sewer but I love trying out new fabric and textiles.
I’m still a beginning quilter, so I’m sticking with plain old quilter’s cotton for the time being. I do have some old rayon skirts & dresses that I’d like to use in quilts someday — need to figure out how to work with the challis.
Laminates, chalk fabric, faux leather.
I’m really getting into velvets right now (though it gets a bit 90s).
Im fairly new to sewing, so not really. Another problem is that my local fabric shop is awful and doesn’t have quality fabrics. Having to buy online is getting expensive so only do it once in a while. I would LOVE to make clothing for myself so would love to venture out into something else other than quilting fabrics ! Would like to see some more tutorials for clothing, maybe for teenagers?
I’m starting to love knits. Making some summery dresses for my granddaughter..
I rarely venture beyond cotton, flannel and wool because if bad past experiences. I’d love to see tutorials that lure me out of this comfort zone to give something new a try!
i do a lot of heirloom sewing and have used many fabric types. I worked on knits when my children were small – eons ago – and would like to see more tutorials on the cover stitch for knits, hemming knits and just knits in general. Excited to see you will be expanding in this arena.
Have been having fun with corduroy lately. But really struggling to sew bias tape to the cord with out sewing machine drama. Tuts on sewing with different weights of fabric would be useful.
I’m finishing up a project using canvas weight fabric, then jersey!
I would love to learn how to work with rayons. I find myself buying them because they’re so pretty and then they just sit because I don’t know how to work with them.
Help?
Beautiful fabrics ! I’d love a tutorial on uses
of voile & how to finish seams, kind of thread
to use, interfacings, linings….just all the
nitty gritty stuff !
So far, I’ve just stuck with cottons and corduroy. I would like to branch out someday, though!
Wow- everything looks gogeous! I especially like the corduroy.
I use mostly lightweight cotton and linen, but I would love to make
Fall bag out of corduroy.
I use many kinds of fabrics, because I usually choose them by colour and print and if they happen to be of an unusual kind, what can I do?
I love knits for garment sewing for myself and my daughters. I also absolutely LOVE linen, especially when combined with cotton prints. I would love to see a tutorial on quick, fun projects with linen combined with cotton!
I really like working with the voile for quilts…I’m on a bag kick right now – I think corduroy would be fun!
OOOH I love the Happu Mochi Yum Yum especially the pattern in the middle!
I’m new to quilting so I’ve only been using quilting cotton and flannel. Tutorials for repurposing old jeans for bags would be fun.
I like all brights. I love making crafts for children. The yum yum are soo pretty!
I’ve been trying to work with more knits, even though it pains me every single time. Thanks for the chance!
I would love to see a tutorial on ruffles and flower bunches. I love those kinds of details, but am scared to try them myself.
I’ve been sewing with more knits! I’m pregnant so stretchy fabric is my friend.
How did you know I get in a rut? So true. I’m trying to branch out by making tunics (thanks to you) in fabrics I never would have considered. Brighter colors, more contemporary prints. Lately, after Tunic One, I thought I’d love to use a home dec weight fabric for the fall/winter. Using fabric like this brings up a whole new area of pitfalls and special handling. I’d love to hear more about that as I continue experimenting myself! Thanks!
I love using all kinds of fabrics! I recently made my wedding flowers using all different kinds from cotton to satin!
I love your tutorials! I’d love more dress patterns, simple ones. I haven’t tried one yet
Oops… I hit the send button too fast. I dont have much experience with different types of fabric, but would love a chance!
I am not very adventurous, I do like corduroy for baby shoes. I would love to give that lawn a try, but do not know what I would make with it.
I would love to get some ideas/tutorials for corduroy. I have a bunch of scraps and would love some info on the best way to use them in a quilt.
What beautiful fabrice – I’d like to branch out and work with some of the silk duponi that is out there
I’m slowly getting back into sewing. Love the different patterns!
I have some great heavy twill that I will be diving into as fall gets closer, I envision a jumper for my daughter & maybe a skirt for me. I have been loving all the tutorials, I just wish I had the time to get all the lovely things made! I love the vintage look of “In the kitchen” by Alexander Henry!! The colors are soo rich!!
I want to know more about knits! I even paid for an online class but my fabric didn’t come in until it was over. I’m oversseas so it’s hard to get fabric I want here.
I have started working with Knits. I love interlock, but want to use jersey knits.
I really had some fun with the velveteens this fall/winter, but now I would love to try some voile.
I just received a serger so I am experimenting with knits. I can’t wait to get into the Soul Blossom corduroy too! I hope I win!
I just started using some voile for the first time and I LOVE it. It works so beautifully for itty-bitty baby skirts. Corduroy sounds like it might be nice to work with too, though!
Love your fabrics – when sewed garments, used many different kinds of fabrics. If sew garments again, would like to try some of the new knits and voiles. Normally, use all cotton for quilts.
I’m a novice sewer, to aside from cotton/poly blends, I haven’t tried sewing with anything else. I’d love to get my hands on some oilcoth to made some cute summer bags or some voile to make a cute summer top for my daughter.
I have been making flutter-sleeved pull over tops for my daughter to wear. She loves the feel and easy care of the fabric. I, too, would like to try something using the voile.
Dec weight fabric – I just got a big pile of great prints and have never sewn anything using it. Seems to have lots of possibilities!
Haven’t really branched out- I keep fingering the voiles at our nearby quilt shop but can’t bring myself to buy any… I think they’d be better for clothes? I’m afraid they’d rip in a quilt (I moslty do quilts for kids/babies). But corduroy…hmmm….
I’ve just started quilting, so right now I’m sticking to basic cottons. I’m not opposed to trying other fabrics, though, and would tackle it in a second if a project inspired me to!
OOOH! I am just now learning about all the world of wonderful fabric designers such as these! (I have been limited to JoAnn’s up to now.) I would love to try some of these pretty patterns for tea placemats and aprons, etc.
Oh I LOVE that Happy Mochi Yum Yum! I have recently been working with linen and linen-look fabrics for making skirts and dresses for myself, but I can see myself incorporating scraps of those into quilts!
I am loving the new bright prints….kind of a change for me from the traditional ones! Thanks for the chance to win!
I sew with all kinds of fabrics. Good knits and rayons are always welcome.
I like to make some children’s clothes using knits. Comfort at its best.
Currently working on two bereavement quilts where the fabric available was primarily knits. Been reading a bit about quilting with knits and I think I may have it down pat…maybe.
I’ve started working a bit with knits, but really need to branch out. I’d like to start sewing more clothes, but the biggest hurdle is figuring out the appropriate type of fabric to use.
Haven’t branched out yet but I am loving all solids right now!
I’d like more info on working with fabrics other than cottons. I’ve got my quilters-weight wovens down, but I’d love advice on using voiles, silks, jersey, etc. When I go to the fabric stores, I’m intimidated by all these fabrics I don’t know what to do with.
Oooo, I looove the Alexander Henry prints (big surprise). The Pink Hills print would make a great tank top!
I’ve worked with corduroy, but REALLY want to work with knit but have been too scared! I would love some tutorials (and posibly a little encouragement:) ) on working with knits.
KNITS! For years, I was terrified of them, but am slowly trying something besides tried-and-true cotton. My first (and only) project was a t-shirt from _Sew U Home Stretch_. Lots of compliments already. Thanks for offering this giveaway!
I hope there would be more tutorials on embroidery.
I was drawn initially to quilting as a place to begin playing with prints and colour but am excited to branch out from the traditional to discover the depth and breadth of textiles more fully. Each type of fabric has so much potential to create interesting new dimensions and so I find there is lots of exploring to be done. Having a walking foot on my machine allows me to handle a lot of different weights of fabric and the textures. Soft sculpture and three dimensional use of fabric is where I’m exploring at the moment..it’s all just great fun!
I have been using some of the corduroys for the backs of pillows as they are so soft and cuddly!
Some tips for sewing knits would be great. I’m very tempted to try but don’t know where to start and an easy project (maybe a little outfit for a child) would be great
Amy Butler’s a machine! I’m curious to see how people use corduroy, never sewed with it but intrigued!
I would lvoe to venture into knits a little more! I’m such a perfectionist and the finishing drives me crazy!
I love the stylized roses in the happy mochi pattern set. The pink butterflies definitely appeal to my inner girlie girl side, too!
I typically work with cotton for projects because I find it a lot easier in more fun patterns. I would love some knit tutorials, but I don’t have a serger and would like some tips and tricks that leave nice ends on the inside.
My head is already spinning wit all the awesome cotton choices but I would love to see what quilters are making with the new fabrics. I’m guessing clothing & household items, not quilts?
I have made bags, clothing, home decor, and quilts so I have experimented with a wide variety of fabrics. I have also made costumes for family members!
I have only really made bags and little accessories in the past bit I look forward to taking fashion sewing classes.. And with that comes new fabrics!!! Linen would be nice to work with as well as knits!
I’m just getting back into sewing, and stumbled upon this blog. I have mostly stuck with cottons, but I would definitely appreciate more tutorials on working with different types of fabric!
I am a beginning sewer and have only sewn cotton, but am about to try terry cloth for a pool robe (Made’s pattern). I’d love to try corduroy and voile.
I am new to sewing and I have been sticking with quilting cotton. I love all of your tutorials and would like to see a few regarding stretch fabrics like jersey knit. Thanks!
I never bought “good” fabric before. Sad, but that’s what branching out would be to me.
I would like to try laminated fabric but the price is just too high for me.
Once did a lot of garment sewing and used most every type of fabric available at that time. Now, if resume some garment sewing, would like to use some of the new knits and voiles. Otherwise, the quilter in me loves 100% cotton fabrics.
Voile . . . that would be a great tutorial subject :0) New to your blog. Love what I have discovered so far!
Hi! recently discovered laminated fabrics. They do not contain PVC, which makes them ideal for children!
I’m another sewer who wants to branch out with knits. On occasion, I’ll even search for simple sewing patterns, but then I can’t think of a fabric that would work, or the directions on the pattern are too hazy about what sort of stretchy fabrics are okay.
Have been giving ultrasuede a go lately. Fun. Mostly cottons. Batiks. Been enjoying some prints also.
I have been on a flannel kick recently. I Love all this darling material.
I love home-dec weight for quilts so I don’t have to use a thick batting just a liner.
I’ve never worked with voile before – I just got some to try sewing a top with. I’d love to branch out into other apparel fabrics and would love tutorials on those.
I’ve recently tried sewing with sheer fabrics and iron on vinyl. Definitely a learning curve when working with new fabrics, but I love the challenge!
I have been wanting to try some cotton knits for skirts and to experiment with some wool felts.
I bought a big roll of vinyl just today to monkey with — Had issues with it in the past but think I’ve got it worked out now. Lately I’ve been making some soft sweet pillowcases from old sheets! They’re already so soft and broken in. And used the same sheets to make sleep pants, too!
i’ve been to scared to try anything beyond knits, but i’m making a tote bag with canvas, so we’ll see.
Voile and lightweight fabrics scare me. They just seem so delicate. Would love to see a tutorial making something with a really lightweight fabric.
I’d love to try any of them!
My cupboards are filled with quilting cotton but I’d love to know more about sewing fabrics with a pile – velvet, etc. Also finer fabrics like gauzes or fine voiles.
I haven’t tried any new fabric at all! I’m just stuck! Would love something new.
Love that Happy Mochi Yum Yum!!! I can’t bear to stray off the path of cotton for now, but maybe because it’s so hot, I can’t imagine sewing on anything other than cool cotton!
Amy from Gabriel’s Good Tidings
http://gabrielsgoodtidings.blogspot.com
my biggest branching out has been in color….I used to use mostly florals or sweet baby patterns, now I’m into black and darker colors….and loving it! But I also recently bought some velvet and silk to add to a string quilt…just haven’t gotten up the nerve to do it yet!
I’m loving all the new fabrics for clothing for my niece!! I’m a beginner but I’m trying new things!
I’ve really liked cotton poplin lately. I LOVE LOVE LOVE the “soar” organic poplin I got recently. It Makes a sturdier sling that’s still breathable for baby #2
in a way I guess I am I am experimenting since I am now very much into repurposing adn thrifting for fabric
At the last quilt show I went to I purchased 3 small pieces of silk. Now I just have to gather up the courage to cut into those lovely pieces…..
Thanks sew much for the chance to win!!!
My group World of Charity Stitching, at http://www.worldofcharitystitching.blogspot.com/ makes lap quilts for seniors and children from cross stitched squares and we could always use fabric for the quilts.
Thanks,

I have just bookmarked this blog post. Along with good presentation on the subject, you have also maintained quality moderation by allowing ontopic comments. I would just like to add an extra tip to you and i would advise you to have a feedburner feed …
venturing into the sewing world altogether
Ooooooh, the things I could make. Love, Love, Love, all of those new prints. Thank you for sharing.
Knits. Everything I love is made of Knit and is simply made. If I could just master knits without a serger I would be happy.
Oh I just got a ruffler too so I’m making lots of ruffles for things – looks like the ’80s around here.
I use mostly cotton for quilting, but have been using fleece for applique – it doesn’t fray and with a wide variety of colors and patterns it lends itself well to applique.
I LOVE knits and would love some advice for sewing w/ them & project ideas
I heart all fabric, though….kinda of an addiction!
