Sew Wild Inspiration + Giveaway
Alisa Burke, mixed-media artist, painter, designer and creative spirit, joined us on the blog earlier this year with her fun Doodle Pillow tutorial. We enjoy all she does over at Alisa Burke, and we’re excited to check out her latest book, Sew Wild.

Alisa writes, “Sew Wild gives you the green light to make great surface design and mixed media art by breaking the rules and showing you there is no right or wrong way of creating. Enjoy the unlimited freedom and possibilities of color, pattern, and customizable fabric. Get wild with printing, painting, drawing, stenciling, and other surface design methods. Explore unique design materials such as plastic bags, photographs, and cardboard.”
Comment today for a chance to win a copy of the book. Alisa’s baby girl is due soon, and today she shows us a beautiful project from the nursery-in-progress, inspired by Sew Wild. Baby will clearly be surrounded by art, color, beauty and love!

With a baby girl on the way we have been busy preparing, decorating and creating and I couldn’t resist making a fish mobile inspired by my new book, Sew Wild.

I started by gathering all my scraps in colors that we picked out for the room (blues, greens and turquoise). Most of my scraps include hand painted or dyed fabric and lots of upcycled fabric.

I placed the the scraps to pieces of card stock for stability and went wild with free motion sewing. I created lots of messy circles…

…And lots and lots of free motion, simple fish.

I cut out all the fish and the circles

And then sewed them together in groups of 8-9 shapes.

Next I wrapped an embroidery hoop with scraps of hand painted fabric and tied each strand of fish to the hoop, making sure they were places equal distance apart for balance.

Last, I hung the mobile above the crib and in front of a fun ocean painting that is in progress.

They complement each other perfectly!

For more wild and creative sewing projects check out my book, Sew Wild!

Great idea to use up fabric scraps as well! I like the idea of making my own decorations simply when i get out of my parents’ house and into my own place! I did end up buying a sewing machine to learn how to sew as i was wanting to make a costume for a convention but didn’t get very far in my learning.

That book would definately inspire me to let my creativity run WILD! I would love to win it!

Gorgeous! I have a little boy on the way so this is nice inspiration for me!
This is such a great idea. I’ve never tried free-motion quilting before (I would need one of those feet for my machine), but I would love to try and this seems like such a perfect project for a beginner in the area! Thanks!

So cute! If my son was still a little guy I’d have run to the sewing machine to stitch one up with planets and stars and comets. Instead, I’ll admire yours, and wait for nieces, nephews, and grandchildren. Thank you for sharing this project with us!
A splendid tutorial on free-motion and making wonderful use of scraps. The book looks like something a sort of stuck-in-the-mud, old-fashioned type like me would find inspiring. Thanks for the chance to win a copy.
I could always go for another sewing book!
Interesting project. Thanks for the chance to win the book
What fun! So cheerful and colorful. The idea of a mobile is really great idea. I’ve been tradional quilting for years and have within the last year gone into art quilting. I am thoroughly enjoying the “playing” with the fabrics and different surface designs. It has been fun learning experience and opened up so many different avenues for my art quilting. Can’t wait to see this book.
Beautiful! As a quilter, I have so many scraps of colorful fabric. I think this book would be a great way to use them creatively.
That’s so pretty and easy too.
What a fun project! I love Alisa’s take on paint/fabric and sewing!
So cute! Love the idea!
Loved it..
What a wonderfully creative project! I wish that sometimes I would stop thinking projects have to be complicated to the simple yet still beautiful projects could come to the forefront.
I’m new to sewing (completely new…as in, never used a sewing machine before) so winning this book would be so wonderful
this book is awesome. My husband and son are avid fishermen I would love to my this for a Grandchild.
So cool!
LOVE IT! I’ve been taking Alisa’s class on surface design which gives you lots of ideas how to design your own fabrics. I think I will try something similar with “leaves” for a great fall project!
Sew pretty! (ha!couldn’t resist) Seriously though, I love the theme and the colors are beautiful. The ocean painting is cute. It’s enough to attract the baby’s attention and curiosity without being too much. There’s a lot of nice potential in this theme, also. Pillows, puppets, soft fabric story books, blankets, stuffed ‘creatures’…
My book is on the way. Can’t wait!!!
What a fantastic idea!
Always wanted that book!
Love this mobile! It is adorable.
Fun! I’d love to see this book!

Love the mobile! This sounds like a fun and unique book!
As always, so inspired by Alisa’s design and use of color. Love the movement of this mobile and the smiles it will create on their sweet baby.
My son would love one of these mobiles! We moved right before he was born, so sadly, his nursery isn’t all that cute! Actually there’s hardly anything in it, so this would be the perfect project to jump start decorating his room! I’d love to win a copy and check out the rest of her projects!
Thanks for a fabulous tutorial! The fish theme is adorable. I loved Alisa’s Canvas Remix book and can’t wait to see Sew Wild.
Beautiful and calming! Thanks for all of your great ideas! I plan to make one for our guest room! Congratulations regarding your book.. how exciting!

Cool, cool, cool! How simple and fun–your daughter will love it. I already have your book and am already creating some “new” fabric. The DVD is like frosting on a yummy cake. Totally inspiring. I’d love to win another and share it with a good friend.
Oh how wonderful! I love the mobile! Again an incredible project of Alisa Burke! Greetings from Germany!
i adore Alisa’s blog, and I’m TOTALLY in love with the fish mobile!!
Since I am incapable of sewing a straight line I’d like to see more of this free-hand motion sewing going on. Obviously I’m not saying it’s easier but i have no hope in straight lines so this better work for me.
Anyway, what I was going to say is that this is so lovely and different (in a most positive way) and colour scheme is unexpected (again all in the most positive sense of the word). Many thanks for sharing.
Looks like an inspiring book. I hope to check it out!
Would love a shot a winning this copy!
LOVE this project and can’t wait to get her book!
I am a fan of Alisa’s! What a great mobile and painting! I love the sea and would love to make one of my bedroom in my beach house. In fact I think I would turn it into a lamp cover!Wouldn’t that be great?

I have a granddaughter coming in December and would love to build the mobile for her crib! In fact, I think I will! Would love to win your book, Alisa, sounds grand.
I love the wild creativity of this book! I will cross my itching fingers to become your winner.
The painting is wonderful, and this project is the perfect go-with. Thanks for the tutorial.
Wow what a gorgeous room! Almost 6 years ago when my son was born we created an under the sea room for him. To this day it is still the same so coloful and fun. I wish I would have realized at that time that I really did posess the talent to create some of the elements myself. I love the painting and mobile so much I think I will update his room with some of my own creations with the same underwater theme. Bringing it to a more reasonable age level for my almost 6 year old son.
I can’t wait to get this book and I am enjoying Alisa’s Beneath the Surface class. est wishes for your future and your family Alisa! Thanks to everyone for the give away and this awesome tutorial!
