Modern Block of the Month (BOM) ~ November Sew-Along
We’re sorry you had to wait so long for November’s Modern Block of the Month post! Handmade Holidays filled our posting schedule for November, but today’s November block was worth the wait. Alissa Haight Carlton from Handmade by Alissa designs a new block every month in our series, helping you create a modern and pretty block in fabrics of your choice. There’s a new design every month but you can sew any time (December’s block will post at the end of the month!).
Alissa’s book with Kristen Lejnieks, Block Party: The Modern Quilting Bee: The Journey of 12 Women, 1 Blog & 12 Improvisational Projects, inspired our BOM series. Alissa’s second book, Modern Minimal: 20 Bold & Graphic Quilts, is due in early 2012 and includes many beautiful, new quilt designs.

It’s finally time for the next Modern BOM block! You’ve all been patiently waiting for the November block but meanwhile I’m sure you’ve been loving Handmade Holidays… Here is the November block in early December!
Fabric requirements:
- Fabric A: (Kona Cotton Bone) 6” WOF strip
Fabric B: (Kona Cotton Butterscotch) 3” x 20” scrap
Fabric C: (Crossweave Blue Blue) 2” x 20” scrap
Fabric D: (Shot Cotton – Galvanized) 3” x 20” scrap
Cut list:
- A1 = 3.5” x 3.25”
A2 = 5.5” x 2.75”
A3 = 7.5” x 2.75”
A4 = 9” x 2.75”
A5 = 9.5” x 2.75”
A6 = 9.5” x 2.75”
A7 = 7.5” x 2.75”
A8 = 5.5” x 2.75”
A9 = 3.5” x 3.25”
B1 = 4.5” x 3”
B2 = 8.5” x 2”
B3 = 6.5” x 2”
C1 = 4.5” x 2”
C2 = 9.5” x 2”
C3 = 4.5” x 2”
D1 = 6.5” x 2”
D2 = 8.5” x 2”
D3 = 3” x 3”
Assembling the Block:
1. Sew together two columns of piecing as pictured in the diagram.
2. Sew the two columns of piecing together, lining up the colorful strips so that they are centered in the background fabric (Fabric A) strips from the opposite column.
3. Now turn the piecing at a 45 degree angle and trim down to 12.5” square. Make sure that your upper left and lower right corners fall on the center seam of the piecing.
Tip: This is another block ideal for a 12.5” square ruler. If you don’t have a ruler like that consider drawing the block onto the piecing before making your first cut. You wouldn’t want to cut one edge incorrectly and not be able to get a full 12.5” square block out of the piecing.

I am really disappointed that this November BOM was not posted until December. Honestly, I’m afraid that y’all are going to drop the ball one this quilt along and all the materials I’ve already invested in are going to go to waste.

*I’m not minimising your concern, but in the great global scheme of things it’s only a quilt block and it’s only a few days late!
And a jolly lovely block it is too … I’d like to play with this idea with longer strip piecing and do something with the offcuts …

I would also add that you have no need for concern, Concerned Quilter. Rather than dropping the ball, in fact Sew Mama Sew was providing you with amazing content every single day in November for Handmade Holidays. That is the only reason the block was posted in early Dec. Thanks.
Can we use these designs for bee blocks? I really like this one, but I don’t want to step on copywritten toes…
I’m a little late getting to the party of the BOM. These look like a great introduction to making a large quilt slowly as I’m a newbie. They are such fun blocks and we get to learn so many techniques. Love it!
