Looking for something fun to do with your Valentine? How about a game of tic tac toe?
- Two 16″ x 16″ squares of fabric for the game board
- Ten 4″ x 4″ squares of fabric for X beanbags
- Ten 4″ x 4″ squares of fabric for O beanbags
- One 16″ x 16″ square of fusible fleece or batting
- Dried beans, rice, popcorn kernels, or other filler for beanbags
- Fabric paint
- Freezer paper or other stencil
(All steps assume 1/2″ seam allowances unless noted otherwise.)
If using freezer paper, cut 5 X stencils and 5 O stencils. Iron, waxy side down, to tops of beanbag fabric squares. (A detailed explanation of how to use freezer paper to stencil can be found here.) If using another type of stencil, follow your usual way of stenciling.
Paint Xs onto five 4″ x 4″ squares and Os onto the other five 4″ x 4″ squares. Set paint according to fabric paint’s instructions.
Paint a tic tac toe grid on top of one 16″ x 16″ square. My grid lines are 1/2″ thick, and placed 5.5″ from each edge.
Assemble game board by ironing fusible fleece to the wrong side of one 16″ x 16″ square.
Pin 16″ x 16″ squares right sides together. Sew along edges, leaving a 4″-5″ gap for turning.
Trim excess fabric in corners, being careful not to snip any stitching, and turn right side out.
Iron and top stitch 1/4″ around edge, being sure to sew opening shut.
Assemble bean bags by pinning all 4″ x 4″ squares right sides together and sewing along edges. Be sure to back stitch and leave a small gap for turning.
Trim excess fabric in corners, again being careful not to snip any stitching, and turn right side out. Iron.
Fill each bean bag half way with beans, rice, popcorn, or other filler.
Top stitch 1/4″ around edge, being sure to sew opening shut.
Now you’re ready to challenge your valentine to a game of tic tac toe!
