Fat Quarter Project ~ One Strap Bag Tutorial

This bag is currently my favorite kids accessoires and I bet your kids will love it!
It looks really modern and it’s easy to make.
You Will Need:
- 1 fat quarter
- Fabric scraps
- 16 inch zipper
- 6 inch zipper
- Ribbon for strap (I used my old belt)
- Coordinating thread
Let’s Cut!:
- Cut 22˝x 16˝ rectangle of main fabric
- Cut (4) 4˝x 3.5˝x 2˝ trapezoids of fabric scraps
- Cut 22˝x 4.5˝ rectangle of multicolored fabric
- Cut 7˝x 2.75˝ rectangle for pocket
- Cut 7˝x 0.75˝ rectangle for pocket
- Cut a circle 7˝ in diameter for the bottom of bag
- Cut 16˝ long ribbon for strap
Let’s Sew!:
We are going to start by adding a 16˝ zipper to a shorter side of the main fabric. Set zipper and fabric right sides together and sew it.
Then turn it and sew one more time.
Now, take two trapezoid pieces. They should look like this:
Place the trapezoid pieces right sides together and set the ribbon between them.
Sew three sides, leaving the longest open. Turn to a right side. Sew it on the top of the bag, from the outside.
Fold the top part of the bag in two times from each side, as shown in the photo, and sew it together.
It should look like this:
And this:
Take the edge of the multicolored piece, pin and sew it.
Sew a zipper to pocket pieces.
Fold all edges except the bottom one and press them. This will make sewing a lot easier and everything will look nicer.
Place the pocket next to the multicolored fabric piece, pin it and sew it together.
Take the bottom of the bag and of the multicolored piece, pin them and sew together.
Take the other two trapezoid pieces, turn them right sides together and set the other side of the ribbon between them. Sew three sides, leaving the longest open. Turn to a right side. Sew it on the bottom of the bag, from the outside.
Keeping the bag wrong side out, take the bottom and the circle, and pin right sides together. Sew around the circle.
Done!

Oh my goodness! This is so cute, and you can tell the children love it! Those kids are adorable! I don’t have any children, but I might make one for my adult sister. I’m definitely adding this one to the project list for my Bag of the Week stash-busting blog. I’ve got some cute upholstery and very utilitarian ticking material that would work perfectly here. Or maybe the polka dots. Forget it, I’ll just have to make several. Birthdays coming up… this would make a great present!
