My name is Linda Lum DeBono. I am a designer and author of bright, happy applique [mostly] patterns. My new book, Sew Merry and Bright: 21 Easy, Fun, and Festive Patterns, is all about Christmas! As you can see, I love happy, nontraditional colors for the holidays.
I don’t know about you but during the holidays we watch a lot of movies. My son, Alex, loves to hug pillows and when he saw this Robert Kaufman polar bear fabric, he wanted a body pillow. He happens to love music and my favorite holiday saying– I’m not sure that it is a popular saying, but in our house we love to say, “have jingle will rock.” One of my favorite projects from the book is the “noel” pillow and I thought that it would be fun to incorporate all of these elements into Alex’s pillow.
Materials:
- 1/4 yard white print for the chevron center
- 1/4 yard light blue dotted print for the chevron center
- Fat quarter red print for the applique letters
- 2/3 yard polar bear print for the side panels
- 2/3 yard print for the backing
- Polyester fiberfill
- 12″ square fusible web
- Jingle pillow template
Finished size: 18 1/2″ x 29″
Cutting:
- From the white print, cut 5 squares, 8″ x 8″ (if you are using Triangulations)
- From the light blue dotted print, cut 5 squares, 8″ x 8″ (if you are using Triangulations)
- From the polar bear print, cut 2 rectangles, 6″ x 18 1/2″
- From the backing print, cut 1 rectangle, 18 1/2″ x 29 1/2″
First you need to choose two colors for the chevrons. I choose a light blue and a white fabric. When choosing fabrics for this part of the pillow, try to make it relatively subtle because the applique will need to stand out.
Next, decide on how you are going to make the half-square triangles. I used Triangulations in this project but in the book I used Thangles. Use what is comfortable for you. You want 3″ finished Triangulations.
Tip: I usually add an extra bit of fabric around the outside of the paper template. It is easier to trim down later for accuracy.
Follow the directions for the product that you are using and pin the fabrics to the paper template.
Stitch on the dotted lines with a relatively short stitch so that it will be easy to tear away the paper later.
Trim along the outside of the paper template. Cut apart the pieces on line and press.
Sew the half-square triangles into rows and then sew the rows together to form the pieced top.
Draw your letter applique shapes from the Jingle pillow template onto the fusible web. Follow the manufacturer’s directions and fuse to the wrong side of the applique fabric. Cut out and fuse onto the pieced top.
Use a raw edge, button hole, zig zag or any other stitch that you desire around the fused applique shapes.
Sew the side pieces to the center pieced section.
With right sides facing, sew the front and back of the pillow together. Leave a 3-4″ opening for turning. Turn right side out and press. Fill the pillow with polyester fiberfill and stitch opening closed.

Love your ideas! Last Christmas I gave 8 quilts to family members plus 4 sets of placemats. I finished with a great deal of help and support from my husband two days before the family arrived to celebrate the holidays! Yes, I do wait till the last minute!
My holiday plan this year is to work on decorations for my house. I have done gifts for several years but due to the April 2011 Tornadoes we are in a different house and will need new decorations.
This is a lovely project. I haven’t started my holiday projects yet but I’m getting a list together. I have several for my two little ones in the works.

LOVE the pillow! I’ve actually been acquiring, saving and hoarding up holiday themed fabric for the past year or so, in the hopes of making a bed-sized Christmas quilt for every bed in our house. I’m hoping to at least start that project this Christmas so it might be ready by next Christmas!
My holiday sewing plans…..I don’t even know where to start. I can tell you that I have started this year which is huge for me because I always wait until octoberish. So I have a wallhanging in the works, a couple quilts coming up and then I hope to find a couple smaller projects to tackle. Would love to win this book as it looks very inspiring and I could use a little of that at the moment.
Typically I wait until the last minute, but I was looking for a quick small project and already made some coasters. I’ll probably start my next holiday project on Dec 23.

I always wait until the last moment because that’s when I get my best ideas – unfortunately. Every year I say that next year will be different, but I just can’t seem to get excited about Christmas projects until December. Maybe this year……
I am definitely a last minute sewer for Christmas presents…well, let me change that. I usually start them early so I can be done early…but every year it happens and I am up late on Christmas Eve binding a quilt or whatever it is.
I always tell myself I’ll start working on Christmas projects during the summer, but end up starting after Thanksgiving. Looks like there are some great projects in this book that might inspire me to get an early start!!

I want to make a second tree skirt for this Xmas. I started in January by choosing fabric and drew a circle on my background and that’s as far as I got. Pathetic.
I just joined a Christmas fabric charm swap so I’m ready to start some holiday sewing! Maybe this year I’ll get those patchwork stockings made and I could use a new tree skirt, too.
I am just finished a Fun and Done quilt that was a quilt as you go, in a variety of white black green and red fabrics. It came out nicely. I would like to finish Santa in his sleigh wall hanging I started 2 yrs ago too.
I’m afraid I do always wait for the last minute. I’ve been planning on making a tree skirt ever since we moved two years ago.
Unfortuneately, I am a last minute person. BUT – there is always a chance I will change my ways and this year has some strong possibilities for progress. The book would help – ha ha!!

haven’t started on Christmas yet, but will be definitely making a couple of those pillows. finishing up a quilt for my daughter’s wedding present.
I am trying to finish my first full size quilt for my hubby as well as cross-stitching my son an elaborate stocking (old fashioned boy’s toys…). I also need to sew up a Mary, Joseph, and Baby Jesus counted cross-stich designs into stand-alone figures for a cross-stitched nativity.
Wish I would start early … but ‘early’ means november for me;-)

Each year I have GRAND plans to work on Christmas projects (typically ones I didn’t finish in time) during January and February…and I never do it. This year I have no large quilts to make as gifts, but I am starting to make some pillows (for ME!!) and table runners (again, for ME!!)now from a pattern and fabrics I bought a year and a half ago.
I am a teacher, and it seems that once September hits, I have no time to sew and Christmas sneaks up on me. I am looking forward to completing some possible (small) gift items as time allows, too…mostly small zipper bags and maybe a few tablerunners.

Yikes, Christmas! I’m always late finishing things. Ask my family. I’ve given boxes with fabric and a pattern and a promise, or when I was painting a warning “don’t touch it, it isn’t dry yet!” maybe I should start now?
