Thank you so much for stopping by the Sew Merry and Bright: 21 Easy, Fun, and Festive Patterns book tour! Thanks to Sew,Mama,Sew! for being part of this party!

My name is Linda Lum DeBono. I am a designer and author of bright, happy applique [mostly] patterns. My new book, Sew Merry and Bright: 21 Easy, Fun, and Festive Patterns, is all about Christmas! As you can see, I love happy, nontraditional colors for the holidays.
I don’t know about you but during the holidays we watch a lot of movies. My son, Alex, loves to hug pillows and when he saw this Robert Kaufman polar bear fabric, he wanted a body pillow. He happens to love music and my favorite holiday saying– I’m not sure that it is a popular saying, but in our house we love to say, “have jingle will rock.” One of my favorite projects from the book is the “noel” pillow and I thought that it would be fun to incorporate all of these elements into Alex’s pillow.
Materials:
- 1/4 yard white print for the chevron center
- 1/4 yard light blue dotted print for the chevron center
- Fat quarter red print for the applique letters
- 2/3 yard polar bear print for the side panels
- 2/3 yard print for the backing
- Polyester fiberfill
- 12″ square fusible web
- Jingle pillow template
Finished size: 18 1/2″ x 29″
Cutting:
- From the white print, cut 5 squares, 8″ x 8″ (if you are using Triangulations)
- From the light blue dotted print, cut 5 squares, 8″ x 8″ (if you are using Triangulations)
- From the polar bear print, cut 2 rectangles, 6″ x 18 1/2″
- From the backing print, cut 1 rectangle, 18 1/2″ x 29 1/2″
First you need to choose two colors for the chevrons. I choose a light blue and a white fabric. When choosing fabrics for this part of the pillow, try to make it relatively subtle because the applique will need to stand out.

Next, decide on how you are going to make the half-square triangles. I used Triangulations in this project but in the book I used Thangles. Use what is comfortable for you. You want 3″ finished Triangulations.

Tip: I usually add an extra bit of fabric around the outside of the paper template. It is easier to trim down later for accuracy.
Follow the directions for the product that you are using and pin the fabrics to the paper template.
Stitch on the dotted lines with a relatively short stitch so that it will be easy to tear away the paper later.
Trim along the outside of the paper template. Cut apart the pieces on line and press.

Sew the half-square triangles into rows and then sew the rows together to form the pieced top.

Draw your letter applique shapes from the Jingle pillow template onto the fusible web. Follow the manufacturer’s directions and fuse to the wrong side of the applique fabric. Cut out and fuse onto the pieced top.

Use a raw edge, button hole, zig zag or any other stitch that you desire around the fused applique shapes.
Sew the side pieces to the center pieced section.
With right sides facing, sew the front and back of the pillow together. Leave a 3-4″ opening for turning. Turn right side out and press. Fill the pillow with polyester fiberfill and stitch opening closed.

Enjoy!

Would love to have a copy of this book – thanks for the chance
Thanks for an excellent tutorial – I’m going to try this project. I like to start things after Halloween because that usually requires a lot of sewing in our house, then it’s onward towards the Holidays!
This looks like a great book and I’d be really happy to win a copy! I haven’t started my Christmas sewing yet. Okay, I’ve never started it this early but this book might just change that!
Thank you so much!
LOVE the pillow! I’ve actually been acquiring, saving and hoarding up holiday themed fabric for the past year or so, in the hopes of making a bed-sized Christmas quilt for every bed in our house. I’m hoping to at least start that project this Christmas so it might be ready by next Christmas!
My holiday sewing plans…..I don’t even know where to start. I can tell you that I have started this year which is huge for me because I always wait until octoberish. So I have a wallhanging in the works, a couple quilts coming up and then I hope to find a couple smaller projects to tackle. Would love to win this book as it looks very inspiring and I could use a little of that at the moment.
Typically I wait until the last minute, but I was looking for a quick small project and already made some coasters. I’ll probably start my next holiday project on Dec 23.
So cute! My grandkids love having lots of pillows they can drag around and lay on. this pillow will make a cute Advent gift and will be well loved. Now off to find some cute holiday fabric. thanks so much fir the tutorial and giveaway.
I have not started my holiday sewing at all! I love to make present sfor family and friends but I am a bit of a last minute person. Maybe this blog tour will inspire me to get started early!
Just got in my order of Brrr! Haven’t decided exactly what I’m going to do with it yet but probably a quilt; thanks for chance to win!
I plan and create way ahead of time… in my head! I do the actual sewing/quilting last minute of course
This year I plan cuddle-worthy quilts for my kids and grandkids. Adults like cuddly quilts too right?
Wow! The book looks like it is filled with great ideas. Thanks for the cute Christmas holiday pillow pattern.
Most of the time I’m way behind, but with all the Christmas in July ideas now, I might get a head start this year!
I plan on making pillowcases and quillows.
I am sewing a quilt and pillow set for my Mother-In-Law using Basic Grey’s Jovial fabric. I have a baby due any day now, so I figured I needed a head start!
I don’t know if it counts as crafting, but I hope to make jam from wild berries around our house for everyone.
I’m concentrating on a wedding quilt for my son right now. If I have any energy left after it’s done in September then I’ll start thinking about Christmas…hahaha!! Thanks for the tutorial of the super cute pillow.
I haven’t even thought about the holidays yet. Just finished a quilt for a wedding present though.
I am making a quilt for my niece for Christmas and just started.
I wouldn’t say I’m last minute but I do wait until the weather cools before I start working on Christmas gifts. I know I will definitely be making one quilt for Christmas and ornaments (many) but that’s all I know for now.
I am determined to make a fun advent calendar and Christmas quilt for my boys!!!
I should probably make plans for handmande holiday gifts like, now, right?!
Looks like a great book. I haven’t decided my holiday sewing plans yet. Guess I better start thinking about before it sneaks up on me! Thanks for the giveaway.
so fun! I’m a last minute crafter… sadly
Seems so far away still! Although I know time will fly. No concrete plans yet, I would like a wall hanging though.
I haven’t even begun to think of holidays crafts but I now I’ll surely be making tons of gifts for friends/family.
I’ve thought about Christmas gifts yet haven’t sewn a thing. The pillowcase sounds like a nice idea too.
Not sure what I will be sewing for Christmas. Money looks to be super tight this year. this book looks great.
I am currently working on 3 quilt tops that I may give as Christmas gifts if they are finished by then. One thing I definitely want to make is a new Christmas tree skirt this year.
Love Linda and her wonderful book! I’m not sure about Christmas sewing, since I’ve been working too much and don’t see that changing. Maybe I just need Linda’s book to inspire me. Yes, I really think that’s it! Thanks for a great giveaway.
I have started several Christmas pillows already.
I need this book! I haven’t started any Christmas crafting – yikes!
That is a great quilt, thanks for the chance to win!
This looks a great book!
I really must start my Christmas sewing earlier this year!!

I am making one or two quilts for Christmas gifts this year. I am hoping to make two “flip-flop” pillows for my nieces too. (They were supposed to be for their birthdays, but you know how that goes…) So thanks for the chance to win Linda’s inspiring book! That will get me going on some fun projects!
I definitely need a kick in the butt to get some Christmas projects started.
Super cute pillow. Great tutorial as well. Thank you for the letter templates to make one of our own pillows.
Congratulations on your book Linda.
I am making my sewing plans for the holidays but have yet to start – shame on me.
I’m already sewing for Christmas! I have two quilts in process for my granddaughters and several small items for other family members.
Thanks for the giveaway!
This will be my first christmas sewing – so I have lots of ideas and a growing list of gifts to make. Now I just need some time to make them!
I hope to get started in September. The book would be a good source of inspiration.
Just what I need for some Christmas inspiration!

I’m already working on a table runner and hope to get several made for Christmas. Thanks for the giveaway!
I usually sew something for everyone for Christmas. Having just gotten back from a trip to Scandinavia, my mind is blank about Christmas in July.
Although everyone needs new pillowcases so I am lovin’ the Have Jingle Will Rock.
The book looks fun with great projects. Thanks for the tutorial-
My holidays sewing plans began two months ago with a BOM called Reinders Games hostrd by Sally and Barb. Also want make a tree skirt.
Have a look here:http://moramargaritaster.blogspot.com.es/2012/07/garden-stepsreinders-gameguardatijeras.html
I have a bunch of ideas for gifts for Christmas. Starting now would be a good idea. Thank you for the fabulous inspiration.
Appropriate name for the book, the projects are merry and bright!!!!!!!
Kid is terrif!!! I have the fabric for my grand’s first Chrsitmas quilt. Had the fabric last year. May still have it by the end of this year….
I usually have things planned out by now- this year has been slow in that category!! I want to make really useable things this year- maybe quilted/appliqued book covers, etc. Or maybe stuffed animals for everyone!!
I always wait until the last moment because that’s when I get my best ideas – unfortunately. Every year I say that next year will be different, but I just can’t seem to get excited about Christmas projects until December. Maybe this year……
I am definitely a last minute sewer for Christmas presents…well, let me change that. I usually start them early so I can be done early…but every year it happens and I am up late on Christmas Eve binding a quilt or whatever it is.
I always tell myself I’ll start working on Christmas projects during the summer, but end up starting after Thanksgiving. Looks like there are some great projects in this book that might inspire me to get an early start!!
I normally make a good number of food gifts. Maybe this year I’ll try to sew some gifts – this book would surely supply me with many ideas. Thanks for the chance to win!
My husband and I were married last fall so Christmas 2011 was very low key. This year I am making quilted Christmas stockings for each of us and sewing felt Christmas ornaments for the tree!
I am planning on making a queen size quilt for my oldest daughter and stockings for all of the children and grandchildren. Thank you for the chance to win a copy of the book.
How cute ! (Your son and the pillow both!) My holiday sewing is still very much in the planning phase and I’m probably being overly optomistic about what I will get done, but it always seems to be that way. I want to make a few easier quilts, some table runners and bags. And 2 pillows. Oh, and some ornaments !
I have started a few things and i am planning a lot more!
I’ve started sewing already. I’ve got a Christmas quilt in the works and I’ve started my tree skirt! I have to start early or it won’t get done on time haha
This book sounds awesome.
Christmas is at my house this year so I will be busy sewing up a table runner and some Christmas stockings for everyone. I’d love to start now but uni is pretty hectic so it might be a last minute thing I’m afraid.
No Christmas sewing for me this year but, if I win a copy of Linda’s book, I could start sewing for the holidays in January, 2013! Thanks for the chance to win.
I have some quilts in progress for this Christmas.
Some Christmassie bunting flags sound like a good place to start…
I want to make that hexagon pillow on the front cover of the book!
I am usually much more organized than this year. Not motivated yet, still a lot of “ideas” but no plan of action. (Help!)
I do have sewing plans for holiday gifts, but haven’t started them yet. I LOVE that you are using non-traditional colors for your holiday crafts. Makes me think I can do it too!
Lovely tutorial and such a great looking book. I’ll have to get on wth covering some pillowcases.
I’m making small pouches for all of my fiends and co-workers.
Book looks great. I usually make gifts but haven’t completely decided for this year – kind of hard to think of with heat wave. Thanks for the giveaway.
I haven’t started yet but do plan on making at least a tablerunner, chair cushion covers, and throw cushion covers. maybe I will find time to make a wall hanging and a small tree skirt. Oh, and one of those hanging fabric banners–I’ve seen lots of those on blogs lately.
Would really like to win this book-looks great!
It just wouldn’t feel right if it wasn’t finished at the last minute.
I don’t think I will EVER do Christmas sewing early – I’m still catching up on the other holidays! I’m going to be making some small quilting gifts soon though!
I love the quote. Pillowcases are long standing gifts fun for kids to redecorate! Hard to imagine starting to sw for Christmas already– I haven’t finished my summer projects and its almost August!
I have lots of plans/lists but really get started around Labor Day!
Thanks for the chance to win!
Deborah
I want to make a second tree skirt for this Xmas. I started in January by choosing fabric and drew a circle on my background and that’s as far as I got. Pathetic.
I just joined a Christmas fabric charm swap so I’m ready to start some holiday sewing! Maybe this year I’ll get those patchwork stockings made and I could use a new tree skirt, too.
I am just finished a Fun and Done quilt that was a quilt as you go, in a variety of white black green and red fabrics. It came out nicely. I would like to finish Santa in his sleigh wall hanging I started 2 yrs ago too.
I’m afraid I do always wait for the last minute. I’ve been planning on making a tree skirt ever since we moved two years ago.
Unfortuneately, I am a last minute person. BUT – there is always a chance I will change my ways and this year has some strong possibilities for progress. The book would help – ha ha!!
I have started my Christmas sewing and would love to have this book for more ideas!
My holiday craft plans usually begin in August – this year, it’s new stockings for us, and some homemade travel accessories as gifts!
let’s just say I am behind…. my christmas presents in July plan is failing. Looks like I’ll be sewing like crazy next week. Where do the days go? congrats on your new book. janita
haven’t started on Christmas yet, but will be definitely making a couple of those pillows. finishing up a quilt for my daughter’s wedding present.
I am trying to finish my first full size quilt for my hubby as well as cross-stitching my son an elaborate stocking (old fashioned boy’s toys…). I also need to sew up a Mary, Joseph, and Baby Jesus counted cross-stich designs into stand-alone figures for a cross-stitched nativity.
Wish I would start early … but ‘early’ means november for me;-)
Greetings from germany, Hildy
Each year I have GRAND plans to work on Christmas projects (typically ones I didn’t finish in time) during January and February…and I never do it. This year I have no large quilts to make as gifts, but I am starting to make some pillows (for ME!!) and table runners (again, for ME!!)now from a pattern and fabrics I bought a year and a half ago.
I am a teacher, and it seems that once September hits, I have no time to sew and Christmas sneaks up on me. I am looking forward to completing some possible (small) gift items as time allows, too…mostly small zipper bags and maybe a few tablerunners.
Thanks for the chance to win–I LOVE Linda’s work!!!
Last minute of course
I’m not sewing yet, but I did just pick up a couple yards of red and lime green with Christmas sewing in mind.
I have all the necessary ingredients to make a set of stockings for the family. I should probably get started on them now!
Yep, started sewing already. But that doesn’t mean I will be finished in time!
really want to make a tree skirt this year. bought fabric last year and….yeah so that’s why I still want to do it
Thanks!
I will start next month. I plan on making a couple of quilts and pillowcases to give as gifts this year, plus one to keep for myself if I have enough time.

I am normally scrambling at the last minute to get my gifts finished. I would LOVE to get started early this year to avoid holiday gift making stress.
Have I started? No, not even thought about it. I’m just getting through summer birthday season!!
Thank you so much for a great tutorial. I have not started sewing for Christmas yet. This book looks like it’s full of inspiration and great projects.
Thank you and Linda for a great giveaway and a chance to win.

Last year I made stockings and ornament. This year, I would like to add a tree skirt and throw pillows. Every year, I want to make Christmas even more special by surrounding my young children with handmade love!
I make plans early but end up waiting until the last minute.
melodyj(at)gmail(dot)com
I haven’t started my Christmas sewing yet, but I have recently received some new holiday fabric. I’m thinking of making some holiday place mats or a table runner among other things this year. Looks like a fantastic book. Thanks for sharing.
I haven’t started my Christmas sewing yet, but I have recently received some new holiday fabric. I’m thinking of making some holiday place mats or a table runner among other things this year. Looks like a fantastic book. Thanks for sharing.
Love this book. Just making my first ever granny quilt.
This book looks glorious. Christmas i have to admit s the last thing on my mind so i have not even thought about sewing at present.
Once I get this book, I’ll have a list of gifts to make in about three seconds flat!
As always, my plans to finish my Christmas sewing by the end of July have gone by the wayside. I’m not even sure what they will be, but do plan to start after vacation next week!
All I have seen is the cover of this book and it screams to me! It’s Sew my style. Thanks for the chance to win!
What a cute project.
I haven’t done any holiday sewing yet but this makes me want to!
Looks like a great book! cute pillow
I’m planning to make cotton flannel scarves for my friends and co-workers … I have big plans, but it will probably end up being last minute! Thank you for the giveaway!
I should be beginning now to sew for Christmas. Last year I was finishing things at the last minute and some items got cut.
Yikes, Christmas! I’m always late finishing things. Ask my family. I’ve given boxes with fabric and a pattern and a promise, or when I was painting a warning “don’t touch it, it isn’t dry yet!” maybe I should start now?
Barb@Witsend
I don’t exactly wait until the last minute, but right now haven’t made plans as to what my holiday crafting will be. Often close deadlines are good incentives…so I’ll probably wait a bit before starting.
I started making a list of what to make this year just a couple of days ago, but haven’t started (or finished that list) yet.
My Christmas crafting….hasn’t started yet…..I have thought about it though….I get a little nervous when I think of how soon it will be here…..I look forward to Sew Mama Sew’s Handmade Holidays and I usually start then…..
Great pillow!!! Love the design!!! Would love the book……fingers crossed…. : )
I’m pretty proud that I only have two gifts outstanding from holidays past… But I should really finish those first this year, eh?
What a fab book – I love the festive season and am already sewing for it!! Still loads to make though
I’m hoping for a sewing-panic-free November/December!!!
Thanks for such a fun book. Christmas is such a fun time however I’m usually rushing around at the last minute finishing gifts. This book has such cute projects you would just want to sit down and start in. Great tutorial also. I’m making some table runners and stockings this Christmas. Thanks.
Each year, I try to make at least a few hand-crafted gifts. But honestly I have not thought that far ahead yet. This beautiful book would be great inspiration!!!
I am planning on sewing a holiday quilt, not sure of what fabrics I will go with, but I better decide soon huh? Thanks
This looks like such a fun book. Really fun pillow too. Thanks.
Hi Linda
Really hoping to try and make something this year
