Phoenix Quilts: Quilts for Families
This summer Julie from Having Fun Quilting decided to create a quilt for friends who lost their home to a wildfire. Julie then decided to get handmade quilts to all 52 families who lost a home in that fire (the Wood Hollow wildfire). Subsequently, and due to the amazing generosity of lots of sewists around the country, Julie developed the Phoenix Quilts project. Julie writes, “…We decided to help every family in the Western United States who has lost a home to a wildfire this summer.” Julie goes on to say,
“There have been approximately 937 homes that have been lost to wildfires this summer. Since my first blog post on my quilt blog on June 25, 2012 asking for help, we’ve had around 350 quilts donated so far, with another five or six more received in the mail every day! People have been soooo generous! Quilts are coming from all over the world-– Australia, Ireland, Italy, South Korea, New Zealand, and Canada-– and from 36 states across America! Quilt guilds that are close in proximity to the fires are really awesome because they are also making quilts to help their ‘neighbors’ so we are able to help more people with what we have! We’ve delivered quilts to fire victims in Utah and Idaho. We’ll be going to Colorado Springs and Ft. Collins, Colorado, in a couple of weeks! I’m still going to quilt-a-thons (I have one tomorrow!) and speaking around the state of Utah to help spread the word about these families that need some comfort during this tragic time of their lives.”
The project grew quickly and Julie can use your help!

Julie and Phoenix Quilts need:
- Volunteers willing to help research fires in your home state. It only takes a few minutes a couple of times a week. Look at the Volunteers section on Phoenix Quilts to see which states still need a volunteer. Contact Julie for more information and/or to lend your support.
- Julie needs completed lap size quilts and monetary donations. The project can no longer accept quilt tops or blocks alone due to time constraints. Money people donate will be used to complete quilt tops and blocks already received (for batting, etc.) and to help with distribution costs. Donate online or at a Wells Fargo Bank (Phoenix Quilts account).
Donations from Riley Blake Designs and Winline Textiles in Julie’s car!
