As fun as it is to dress up in costume finery, it’s even more fun when you dress up with a group. Whether you’re headed to a party with friends or just walking around the neighborhood for some trick-or-treat action, group costuming turns up the fun– and the impact.
While you can certainly stick with the traditional costumes associated with your group, you don’t have to limit yourself to exact replicas. Some of the most fun costumes I’ve seen (and done) have taken well-known characters and added a twist. For instance, my daughter, son, his girlfriend and I wore Alice-in-Wonderland-inspired costumes to Dragon*Con this year, but with a Steampunk twist.

Steampunk isn’t your thing? How about rockabilly? Wild West (saloon girl Disney princesses, perhaps)? Downton Abbey? Flapper? A friend of mine was part of a burlesque Avengers group at ComicCon this year, with all-female versions of familiar heroes like Thor, Loki and even a Nikki Fury.
Here are ten group ideas to get you started:
- The Scooby-Doo Gang
Disney princesses
Disney villians
Avengers/Justice League
The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou
The Royal Tenenbaums
Alice in Wonderland
Clue (game or movie)
Harry Potter
The Addams Family
Have you created some amazing group costumes? Are you working on a fabulous idea right now? Tell us about your group costumes in the comments!

A friend of mine did group costumes for her sports minded family last year. Dad was a football coach, mom was the referee, 3yo daughter was a cheer leader and 1yo son was the football player. They looked really great
We dressed as Dr Teeth and Electric Mayhem ( the band from the Muppets) few years ago.
We’re going to do the peanuts gang this year. My oldest==Charlie Brown, then Lucy, Sally, Linus, and the new baby boy will be Snoopy!
My friends and I went to a Halloween party one year as the Breakfast Club. It was my favorite group costume and really needed all of us to make it work. No one recognized the costume until we struck a pose together.
I had friends do Star Wars – it was a large group, and it was AWESOME!
