Hi, I’m Janice, and today I’m going to show you how to make this Inset Wonky Star Block.
I originally designed this block for a sewing bee I participate in and I thought it would be fun block to use in a variety of projects.
It’s a large, 20” block, so one block is the perfect size for a pillow. If you want to make your own, sew up the block and then check out my pillow tutorial.
Four blocks and a 4” border will give you this great 47” x 47” starburst baby quilt. I can picture this made with comic book fabrics for a boy, or delicate, fussy cut fabrics for a girl.
Tackle 8 blocks and you have yourself a full-sized quilt! This layout is 88” x 88” with a 5” border.
For this block, you will need:
- 1/3 yard of background fabric
- A variety of scraps for the stars
From your background fabric, cut:
- 11 5.5” squares
- 11 3” squares
- 15 1¾” squares
From your star fabric, cut:
- 5 5.5” squares
- 5 3” squares
- 5 1¾” squares.
From your star fabric, take four 5.5” squares, four 3” squares and four 1¾” squares. Slice them diagonally so you have 8 triangles in each size. These will be your star points.
Take one 5.5” background square and one triangle cut from a 5.5” square. Pin triangle to square (as pictured above) with right sides together. Changing the angle of the triangle will change the wonkiness of the point. Make sure that when you flip and press your triangle flat, it extends past the edges of the background square.
Trim your seam allowance to ¼” and flip and press the star point flat.
Place a second star point on the left side of your background square and sew.
Trim seam allowance to ¼”, flip and press flat.
Trim your square back down to 5.5”. Your first one is done!
Now, do the same for the rest of the points. You’ll end up with 4 squares in each size.
Lay your squares out as pictured above.
Sew like-sized squares together horizontally and press seams open.
Then, sew the small and medium rows together, as pictured above.
Sew the remaining seams on the bottom two rows and then sew all four rows together. Trim to 20” square, and you are done.
Enjoy your block!
