Mushroom Pincushion
Stumpwork is used to create three dimensional embroidery art. Padded Stumpwork pieces are the most basic technique, created by stitching a small felt piece onto a background and then stitching over it with the Satin Stitch to create a rounded shape. This is how you can create the cute mushrooms on this simple to sew pincushion!
What You Need:
- 7×2 inch piece of blue felt
- 7×1 inch piece of green felt
- 1 blue and 1 green, 2 inch felt circles
- Small scraps of red and white felt
- Pattern
- Stuffing
- Embroidery floss
- One skein each of dark coral 349, coral 351, light coral 352, green 471, blanc (white)
Stitches:
Satin Stitch, Straight Stitch, Running Stitch, Stab Stitch, Whip Stitch
Instructions:
1. Cut the green felt according to the pattern and stitch it to the blue felt using small running stitches.
2. Using the patterns, cut 5 mushroom top shapes and 5 bottoms from red and white felt.
3. For each mushroom, start by stitching a bottom felt piece in place on the felt background using the stab stitch (see figure). Keep your stitches small and close together.
4. Using white floss, stitch a Satin Stitch vertically over the felt piece (see above).
5. Now stitch the mushroom top in place, tucking a small amount of stuffing underneath. Stitch a horizontal Satin Stitch over the felt piece.
6. Stitch a few Satin Stitch spots on the mushroom top. Don’t pull your stitches too tightly.
7. Continue to stitch the rest of the mushrooms in the same way.
8. Fold the felt strip into a circle, overlapping the ends slightly, sew them together using the Whip Stitch.
9. Sew the bottom circle in place at the base with the Whip Stitch.
10. Sew the top circle in place at the top, tucking stuffing inside.

I haven’t done crewel or needlepoint for years. But I did cross stitch for over 25 years and still do some now and again. I’ve pretty much run out of wall space and places to put my cross stitch. I’ve been doing a lot of knitting now. I wish I had more time for all of my crafting.

I done lots of hand stitching over the years. The traditional embroidered aprons and pillowcases, of course, but I’ve also done embroidery on jeans. I have a counted cross stitch of some cats in my ufo pile. I am planning to use embroidery to embellish and appliqued quilt this year.

I have here, right next tome my Doodle Stitching The Motif Collection Book. I’m teaching my 10 year old daughter to embroider and the designs are simple enough but also so perfect to call her attention. My grandmother, who was born in 1892, taught me to embroider when I was eight years old. (She also tried to retrain me to be right-handed, but my daddy put a stop to that!) As I learned my stitches, if they weren’t as neat on the back as they were on the front, I would have to rip it out and do it over.
In the 70s we embroidered EVERYTHING, but I mostly did chambray shirts and blue jeans. Today, I’m into retro, as well as Aimee Ray. I love doodlestitching!

) I taught myself to embroider last May during a short stint of working the graveyard shift answering phones…… I took 2 calls in three weeks! Now, I am hooked and find great peace in hand work. It is very relaxing for me. I have not ventured into cross stitch yet, it looks very daunting and has instructions!!! Gasp!! I prefer to wing it!

When I was a small child I used to like those sewing cards, the ones that were cardboard with a picture on them, and I used shoelaces as thread. Does that date me, or what?
I started doing real embroidery and counted cross stitch when I was 18 and haven’t stopped since. Hardanger, other pulled thread work, crewel, a little bit of stumpwork, those are the things that I do now. I’d like to learn more about stumpwork, so thank you for the tutorial!
I first learned embroidery in school and just recently came across the sampler I made (1974!). I’m currently working on two quilts with embroidery, and two cross-stitch stockings for my grandbabies. I use Aimee’s Doodle Stitching books specifically when I am mending. I like my mends to be whimsical — so once I have secured the rip or hole, I embroider over it with one of her sweet design.

So fantastic! I just started with embroidery a few months ago and love it! I received both of Aimee’s first two books for Christmas and have this newest one on reserve at the library. I can’t wait to try out some of the different projects! I can’t get enough of her wonderful, cute style and find doodle stitching to be freeing and relaxing without the pressure to get it “just right.”

I am in awe of people who stitch these crazy cute items! I remember taking a stitchery class – I don’t know when? In elementary school or middle school? I still have the sampler, which we then sewed into a pillow. I can remember the store where the class was — it’s long gone — called the “Yarn Barn”

Ah, I remember my Grandmother teaching me cruel, embroidery, and counted cross-stitch when I was about 8 or 9 I’d bet.

I have Doodle Stitching. I learned how to embroider on felt using tissue paper as a way of “transferring” the stitch onto the material. Love her stuff. The book layouts are great too!
I bought her first Doodle Stitching book!!…..sadly I haven’t made anything yet….but I am looking forward to embracing handwork once again.
Mom started me with embroidery when I was a little girl, and some of my projects still hang about their house! I stopped needlework for a while, but after marrying my husband, moving to Pittsburgh, and finding myself in the car for very long stretches at a time to go visit our families (both 5+ hours away—I can’t fly), Hubby heard me mention that embroidery might be something I could happily do in the car and he grabbed the Sublime Stitching Stitch-It Kit for me after we saw it online. I’ve been stitching away most happily ever since!
I’ve Aimee’s other two Doodle Stitching books now, too, and they’re wonderful. I’ve learned a few new tricks from them (though I’ve not tried crewel yet)…and continue to push embroidery on everyone I know.

I adore Aimee’s work! Her second book, the motif collection, is what inspired me to start doing embroidery again! I liked doing embroidery, but I was always stressed out by technique and choosing colors. In addition, I didn’t see a use for my embroidery. Aimee’s book, with it’s fun embroidery patterns, and it’s exciting projects, got me eager to stitch again! Right now I am working on a handkerchief with teapot, tea cup, and teabag patterns on it from Aimee’s book, in a color scheme of bright pink and green. I love it, and I am not afraid to embroider anymore!

I absolutely love to embroider!! I started back in the 70s embellishing “work” shirts with flowers and such! Working with felt is another love of mine! I guess I’ve been at it for 40 years now!

I have done very little embroidery, when in elementary school when they used to teach home ec I did a holly hobbie pattern where we had to do different stitches on it. My mother actually still has mine and my sisters hanging in frames at the house. I would love to win this book to freshen up what skills I have and learn new ones. Cross your fingers for me please!!

I learned how to do basic embroidery 40+ years ago. (I can’t believe I said that!!) Shortly after that I learned to cross stitch really well and continued that for more than 10 years. I am now doing both again THANKS TO ALL OF YOU YOUNG AND EXTREMELY TALENTED LADIES! I love the creativity I find with all of you and would love to win Aimee’s new book. I can promise that I would make as much as I could from her book because this younger generations creativity has re-started mine like you would not believe!

I did a little cross stitch when I was a lot younger, but since then I’ve not done any. I’ve started machine sewing again, but am a bit lost to know where to start with embroidery etc!

I have been embroidering on and off for 20 years. I love the stitchery part of it but do not enjoy the tracing of a design, putting it in a hoop and all the other stuff you have to do first to get it right.
However, seeing Aimee’s mushroom has made me want to do some more.
My mom was always doing embroidery or crocheting – I learned when I was older – doing cross stitch and embroidery – love the affect you can get. I do have Aimee’s first book on Doodle Stitching – such fun designs.

What an adorable project! I’m an experienced-novice embroiderer. I learned from my mom, a cross-stitcher whom learned from her mother a creweler. Now my sis doesn’t care for it yet we’re teaching my 9 year old niece the joys of needlework. The book sounds great for sharing with my family.

I love your books! The designs are beautiful… Embroidery is a relaxing way to play with colors. I am working on a baby quilt for my first grandchild, embroidering animals that go in Noah’s Ark. Also working on wool applique with embroidery. Lots of fun! Congrats on the new book!!!

I love her new book however, I bought a copy the other day. The book store gave me a small discount, because my book is missing pages 80-96 and it has 2 sets of pages 65-79 I’am ok with that but I thought I would let someone know so you make sure all your pages are there. Happy Embroidering!!!!!
