Mushroom Pincushion from Doodle Stitching: Embroidery & Beyond + GIVEAWAY
Aimee Ray is the author of the popular and delightful Doodle Stitching series. Our Farmer’s Market Tote Bag from Doodle Stitching: The Motif Collection: 400+ Easy Embroidery Designs is a favorite project here at Sew,Mama,Sew!, and Doodle-Stitching: Fresh & Fun Embroidery for Beginners is a well-loved classic in our sewing libraries. Today Aimee is celebrating the release of a new book in the series, Doodle Stitching: Embroidery & Beyond: Crewel, Cross Stitch, Sashiko & More.

Aimee explores beautiful stitching techniques with over twenty projects in the book. We think the Redwork & Crewel section alone is reason to buy the book. (Hansel and Gretel Storybook Panels! Crewel Family Tree!) The Sashiko & Shisha projects are also completely wonderful, with an entirely different look.
Today’s Mushroom Pincushion project below is the project on the cover of Doodle Stitching: Embroidery & Beyond: Crewel, Cross Stitch, Sashiko & More. Learn how to do Stumpwork and add three-dimensional elements to your stiching!
Aimee is giving away a copy of Doodle Stitching: Embroidery & Beyond: Crewel, Cross Stitch, Sashiko & More. Add a comment below about your stitching experiences for a chance to win the book. Are you new to embroidery? Are you a true fan of Aimee’s work? Have you made something special with crewel, cross stitch or any of the other techniques in Aimee’s latest book? Let’s talk stitching! Aimee will be back next month with another fun project…

Mushroom Pincushion
Stumpwork is used to create three dimensional embroidery art. Padded Stumpwork pieces are the most basic technique, created by stitching a small felt piece onto a background and then stitching over it with the Satin Stitch to create a rounded shape. This is how you can create the cute mushrooms on this simple to sew pincushion!

What You Need:
- 7×2 inch piece of blue felt
- 7×1 inch piece of green felt
- 1 blue and 1 green, 2 inch felt circles
- Small scraps of red and white felt
- Pattern
- Stuffing
- Embroidery floss
- One skein each of dark coral 349, coral 351, light coral 352, green 471, blanc (white)
Stitches:
Satin Stitch, Straight Stitch, Running Stitch, Stab Stitch, Whip Stitch
Instructions:
1. Cut the green felt according to the pattern and stitch it to the blue felt using small running stitches.
2. Using the patterns, cut 5 mushroom top shapes and 5 bottoms from red and white felt.

3. For each mushroom, start by stitching a bottom felt piece in place on the felt background using the stab stitch (see figure). Keep your stitches small and close together.

4. Using white floss, stitch a Satin Stitch vertically over the felt piece (see above).
5. Now stitch the mushroom top in place, tucking a small amount of stuffing underneath. Stitch a horizontal Satin Stitch over the felt piece.
6. Stitch a few Satin Stitch spots on the mushroom top. Don’t pull your stitches too tightly.
7. Continue to stitch the rest of the mushrooms in the same way.
8. Fold the felt strip into a circle, overlapping the ends slightly, sew them together using the Whip Stitch.
9. Sew the bottom circle in place at the base with the Whip Stitch.
10. Sew the top circle in place at the top, tucking stuffing inside.

I’m just starting to leran how. I’m looking forward to the experience. In middle school we did candlewicking and I learned how to make french knots.
I have done a small amount of embroidery in the past, would love this book! Fresh and new design could inspire starting a new project for sure!!
Awww, how cute is that?! No, I’m not new to any of the above, been doing needlework since I was 8, and I’m not saying how many years ago that was! lol. I recently completed a 16 block embroidered crazy quilt. Took years, but was SO worth it!
I love all her books and really use them lots! Thanks for the chance to win.
I haven’t done much embroidery, it’s scares me a little.
I am new to embroidery. Done nothing but a basic couple of stitches, but I do always like to look at her books, and think about buying them
I am new to embroidery but am really enjoying what I have done so far.
I’m new to embroidery but I love it!
Love it! I enjoy embroidering but don’t get to do it often.
Still learning to whipstitch like my grand mom so this looks fun!
This book looks amazing! I’d love to win it! Thanks!
thanks for the chance! I love to embroider but so far I’ve only used iron on transfers. I would love to use a book.
I haven’t done crewel or needlepoint for years. But I did cross stitch for over 25 years and still do some now and again. I’ve pretty much run out of wall space and places to put my cross stitch. I’ve been doing a lot of knitting now. I wish I had more time for all of my crafting.
Other than the cross stitch pillow I made when I was a kid, I have not done any embroidery. I sure want to though!
What a cute project and this is a new technique for me to try! Thanks so much for Monday inspiration!
Haven’t done much embroidery, but it’s one of my “to try” things on some of my quilts soon! Thanks for the chance!
I have only embroidered on tea towels but this sounds really fun!
I am a fan of Aimee’s books. I have been an avid cross stitcher for as long as I can remember. I have done a little embroidery in the past but have really picked it up over the last six months. My new business has me doing quite a bit of it as a matter of fact. Thanks for a great giveaway.
I used to cross-stitch quite a bit, but have had the bug to teach myself embroidery lately. I just need a good jump start.
keeping my fingers crossed!
I love stiching! I like this way of stiching! I would love to see/ learn more of this way of stiching!
I love the Doodle Stitching books! I’m actually working on a doodley project right now–it’s a semi-sampler with images, stitches, and words that all connect up to the works of my very favorite author.
I have her other books and would love to add this one to my collection, it looks wonderful!
I LOVE embroidery, but I usually don’t know what to do with it once I have completed a pattern. Hence a number of pieces just sitting around my studio. I LOVE the pin cushion idea…maybe one of mine can be converted into a pin cushion…
This looks like a great book!
Oo what a fun giveaway and tutorial
I am a big fan of her designs and especially her little gnome sculptures! I havn’t done much embroidery lately but would love to win this book for my sister

I done lots of hand stitching over the years. The traditional embroidered aprons and pillowcases, of course, but I’ve also done embroidery on jeans. I have a counted cross stitch of some cats in my ufo pile. I am planning to use embroidery to embellish and appliqued quilt this year.
Well embrodery is not my strong suit but I have been practicing because I do want to add this sweet little touch to my projects. Thanks so much for the giveaway would be wonderful to add it to my collection!!!
My mom did crewl all the time i was growing up. Id like to earn it, too.
I have here, right next tome my Doodle Stitching The Motif Collection Book. She loves animals and we donot need to do anything complicated to make it beautiful. I really like Aimee’s work.
I love the mushroom pincushion, so cute! Combining some of my fav things, embroidery and pincushions! I would love to see what other projects Aimees bonny book holds. x

Love to embroider ~ something I learned before I started sewing with a machine even! This book looks really fun and love this little mushroom pincushion!
Thanks for the giveaway and a chance to win this cute book!
My grandmother, who was born in 1892, taught me to embroider when I was eight years old. (She also tried to retrain me to be right-handed, but my daddy put a stop to that!) As I learned my stitches, if they weren’t as neat on the back as they were on the front, I would have to rip it out and do it over.
In the 70s we embroidered EVERYTHING, but I mostly did chambray shirts and blue jeans. Today, I’m into retro, as well as Aimee Ray. I love doodlestitching!
That is so cute. It would make a great gift for some of my sewing friends! Thanks for the tutorial and giveaway.
i love this tutorial ! i will make my own pincushion soon. this is really really cute !!! thank you for sharing
I’ve admired my mom’s talent and learned a little from her over the years. I’m 38 and she is finally is trying to teach me to crochet- so happy! I love embroidering with cloth and felt on my kids’ clothes for a custom look. I’d love to win Aimee’s book. Thanks for this tutorial!

Adorable. My daughter and I will enjoy making it together.
I’ve done very little hand stitch work. It always looks so lovely, but it’s a bit intimidating to me. I’d love to give it a go, though.
I’m a complete newbie, but I’d like to try.
That is adorable! I am learning how to embroider and have been envying the Doodle Stitch books. This looks like a great project and useful too! Thanks!
I recently tried cross-stitch for the first time. I managed to complete a small project and made it a valentine for my husband. Nothing says true love like nearly losing your eyesight over a a few hundred tiny x’s!
I received one of Aimee’s books for Christmas. (A gift for myself
) I taught myself to embroider last May during a short stint of working the graveyard shift answering phones…… I took 2 calls in three weeks! Now, I am hooked and find great peace in hand work. It is very relaxing for me. I have not ventured into cross stitch yet, it looks very daunting and has instructions!!! Gasp!! I prefer to wing it!
Thanks for the tutorial and giveaway! Mostly I cross-stitch and I’ve been wanting to try some other types of embroidery (especially sashiko) for a while now.

x
I have been wanting to work more stitching into my projects. This would be a great way to start.
I have been cross-stitching since I was eight-years-old. I absolutely love it! I tried to hand embroider, but it never comes out nice! I think I need some patterns to follow!
I love pincushions and I love handwork. It is so relaxing. I’ve been looking at this book for awhile now. I would love to add it to my stitching library.

I mostly do cross stitch but would love to learn more stitches.
I have done a bit of embroidery. I have one of the doodle stitching books and love it! I am quite taken with sashiko embroidery but haven’t tried it yet!
When I was a small child I used to like those sewing cards, the ones that were cardboard with a picture on them, and I used shoelaces as thread. Does that date me, or what?
I started doing real embroidery and counted cross stitch when I was 18 and haven’t stopped since. Hardanger, other pulled thread work, crewel, a little bit of stumpwork, those are the things that I do now. I’d like to learn more about stumpwork, so thank you for the tutorial!
I first learned embroidery in school and just recently came across the sampler I made (1974!). I’m currently working on two quilts with embroidery, and two cross-stitch stockings for my grandbabies. This book has been on my wish list for a while now, thanks for the reminder that I need to get it (if I don’t win! LOL)
I’ve only done a little bit of embroidery.. I’d really love to make this pincushion though! It’s so adorable!
Embroidery is my creative indulgence. I love Crewel embroidery kits; especially the ones with birds and butterfly motifs. Last year, I embroidered an elegant pair of butterflies, and I was looking for new motifs to complement it. Aimee’s creations are so inspiring. I can’t wait to grab a copy of her new book!

I’ve done a little bit, just enough to be entranced by new designs and ideas! Makes for great on-the-go sewing.
I love Aimee’s books! I’ve also spent all day working on this little pincushion. It was too cute to pass up! I learned to cross stitch as a child and have branched out to simple embroidery since.
I love embroidery, I’m not new to it, but I really like the new books that are out now, full of great idea. I’ve been waiting for that one to arrive !
I’m a fan of Aimee’s, I love all the little creatures she makes, both stitched and sculpted, her artwork is truly inspiring! I’d love to win a copy of her newest book, I’m slowly stitching my way through the motif collection, it’s terrific!
I did cross stitch as a child. Now usually I just embroider to add faces to stuffed animals and things like that.
I love embroidery. I self taught myself as a little girl. It’s the perfect take along project and nearly everyone will keep it as a treasure when you gift it to them. I would love some new ideas! Thanks for the opportunity.
I’ve been embroidering for quite some time. I go in and out of phases with it. I’m sure this book would send me back into a phase!
How adorable is that! I’ve been doing embroidery, cross stitch etc since before I can remember; it’s been a constant way to keep my hands and mind busy my whole life. I think I’ll put these little mushrooms on polo shirts for my kiddos. Thanks!

I have embellished some onesies with some basic embroidery but always looking for some new inspiration
I am still feeling new to embroidery. I have Aimee’s other two Doodle Stitching books and have made a couple projects with the techniques I learned. I am not totally comfortable with too many stitches yet, but I love her books! I would be thrilled to add this one to my learning library and hope that one day the stitches come easily!
I’m just new to embroidery. The book seems to be fantastic!
I use Aimee’s Doodle Stitching books specifically when I am mending. I like my mends to be whimsical — so once I have secured the rip or hole, I embroider over it with one of her sweet design.
I love cross stitching and spend hours every week on it. I haven’t tried stump work though. I also have a bit of a pincushion addiction so will have to have a go at this cute design. Thanks for sharing the tutorial and giveaway.
I’ve become a real fan of sashiko stitching, though I really loved Aimee’s previous books as well.
I’ve done mostly cross stitch up till now. My daughter brought her books over to share and I fell in love with Aimee’s style!
Right now I’m working on a cross stitch using latch hook canvas and yarn. It’s such an interesting new way to look at cross stitch for me! I’ve used both of Amiee’s first 2 books, and can’t wait to get a hold of this third one.
What a sweet pincushion!

So fantastic! I just started with embroidery a few months ago and love it! I received both of Aimee’s first two books for Christmas and have this newest one on reserve at the library. I can’t wait to try out some of the different projects! I can’t get enough of her wonderful, cute style and find doodle stitching to be freeing and relaxing without the pressure to get it “just right.”
Oh I adore Aimee’s books and creations! I am fairly new to hand sewing but love how calming it can be, blanket stitch would be my fav stitch at the moment, but would love to learn more!
I am in awe of people who stitch these crazy cute items! I remember taking a stitchery class – I don’t know when? In elementary school or middle school? I still have the sampler, which we then sewed into a pillow. I can remember the store where the class was — it’s long gone — called the “Yarn Barn”
I love kneedle work but never know what to do that. This book looks fun
I’m going to have to make this little pincushion! I’m sure it won’t look nearly that perfect, but it is so cute I need to try.
Embroidery is my ONE craft this year and I am hoping to actually get GOOD at it. AND have fun with it. I love Aimee’s books and would love to have a copy. She is AMAZING!
I love embroidery and am glad to see it making a comeback!
I have been doing embroidery since my mother taught my how to embroider dish towels that were actually used for doing dishes! I have taken breaks occasionally to pursue other crafts but always find that embroidery draws me back. I love Aimee’s books and use a lot of her ideas and patterns. I would love to win the new book.
I’ve done some embroidery using Sublime Stitching patterns and stem stitch. I mostly wish I could make a decent french knot.
I love to stitch! I started out as a teenager doing cross-stitch, then eventually found my way into embroidery. I just love it! I think I have embroidered something for every single person in my family!
I love to embroider and still have so much to learn. But I love
teaching kids techniques that help them learn to work with floss and thread and branch into sewing. This book looks like a great one for fabulous ideas.
That’s one cute little mushroom! I used to do lots of cross-stitching when I was younger, but not too much embroidery. I’ve been tempted to try it some more after picking up a fantastic Japanese embroidery book. Would love to give it another go!
I have her first book and have made a handful of projects but I really need to stretch my skills and do something more complicated. I love embroidery.
I cross stitch, and embroider other things VERY occasionally.

Thanks for this great opportunity!
I grew up with cross stitch, but embroidery itself (free style) is rather new to me. It’s the first time I’ve seen these Doodle Stitching books and they look lovely. I’m a sucker for all things mushroom and this one caught my eye!
I’m a big lover of embroidery, cross stitch, sashiko, crewel, hardanger you name it, I love it! I’d be interested to see Amy’s take on these techniques as she has such a fresh, modern approach.
I have done quite a bit of embroidery in my younger days, but have lost touch in the past few years. Would love a copy of the book to revive !
Normally I stick to counted cross-stich, but I’m always looking to expand my repertoire.
Ah, I remember my Grandmother teaching me cruel, embroidery, and counted cross-stitch when I was about 8 or 9 I’d bet.
She also taught me to crochet. But the quilting she always did? I had to teach that to myself in her memory.
I did my first embroidery work last week!! It was a great experience (but small one
). Now I’ve been gatering material and organizing all the floss (my mother old cross stitch stuff). This book would be a great adition to my small stash * ***
I have done counted cross stitch, embroidered quilt blocks, and am currently working on a stamped cross stitch tablecloth which will be an anniversary gift to my daughter and son-in-law (that is if I get it done in time!). Would love to win Aimee’s book. Thanks!

I’ve embroidered lots, but stumpwork and sashiko are both on my list of techniques to try, especially Sashiko! Aimee’s stuff is always so cute!
I haven’t done embroidery for quite a while but her designs inspire me to give it a try again.
I used to do cross stitch ALL the time! I’ve made many birth and wedding samplers and I still have some fun framed nursery rhymes pieces that I made for my kidlets when they were still babes (that was 30 years ago!!) The only embroidery I’ve really done is for doll faces, but lately I’ve seen some larger pices that I’d really like to try…
I am in awe since I just bought “Doodle Stitching” t a local bookstore (Monterrey, Mexico), was amazed to find it waiting for me and now I find out about this give away!! couldn´t be happier! Wonderful book design and thanks for the show and tell of the technique.
I haven’t done any handwork in a long time! This book would certainly get me back in the mood!

Crewel was actually the gateway into embroidery for me
And I love Aimee’s books!
I’d love the chance to enter your giveaway for the delightful embroidery book. I learned to embroider when I was about 7 or 8 years old, but didn’t really like it until I was in my teens. I discovered cross-stitch, and became obsessed for about 20 years, but have now started back with crewel work and embroidery.
My grandmother used to do beautiful things to my collars when I was young. My mother and all of my aunts have her talent as well. I’d love to relearn, and practice before my mother notices!
New to embroidery. Would enjoy the book!
I love cross-stitching and sewing on my machine…I’m in process of making a quilt for my senior daughter. Nice pin cushion thanks
I have Doodle Stitching. I learned how to embroider on felt using tissue paper as a way of “transferring” the stitch onto the material. Love her stuff. The book layouts are great too!
I bought her first Doodle Stitching book!!…..sadly I haven’t made anything yet….but I am looking forward to embracing handwork once again.
Mom started me with embroidery when I was a little girl, and some of my projects still hang about their house! I stopped needlework for a while, but after marrying my husband, moving to Pittsburgh, and finding myself in the car for very long stretches at a time to go visit our families (both 5+ hours away—I can’t fly), Hubby heard me mention that embroidery might be something I could happily do in the car and he grabbed the Sublime Stitching Stitch-It Kit for me after we saw it online. I’ve been stitching away most happily ever since!
I’ve Aimee’s other two Doodle Stitching books now, too, and they’re wonderful. I’ve learned a few new tricks from them (though I’ve not tried crewel yet)…and continue to push embroidery on everyone I know.
I’ve been embroidering for awhile now but at a snail’s pace. I love Aimee’s books and Etsy shop!
I adore Aimee’s work! Her second book, the motif collection, is what inspired me to start doing embroidery again! I liked doing embroidery, but I was always stressed out by technique and choosing colors. In addition, I didn’t see a use for my embroidery. Aimee’s book, with it’s fun embroidery patterns, and it’s exciting projects, got me eager to stitch again! Right now I am working on a handkerchief with teapot, tea cup, and teabag patterns on it from Aimee’s book, in a color scheme of bright pink and green. I love it, and I am not afraid to embroider anymore!
I use Aimee’s other books and it would be a delight to receive this one. Thank you.
I’ve been obsessed withe embroidery for the last few months and have worked with fabric and hand sewn cards. I’m excited to see Aimee’s book for more project ideas and inspiration!
I absolutely love to embroider!! I started back in the 70s embellishing “work” shirts with flowers and such! Working with felt is another love of mine! I guess I’ve been at it for 40 years now!
I love Aimee’s books, this one look beautiful.
I`ve always been a counted cross-stitch girl, but lately I`m seeing so many lovely embroidery designs that my fingers are itching for a book like this!
Book looks fantastic! I’m looking for ideas for a felted bag that I’m in the process of knitting.
I am pretty new still. But I love it so!!!
I love to embroider, but I am not really that good at it so I could use a good book and this looks so cute!
I have done very little embroidery, when in elementary school when they used to teach home ec I did a holly hobbie pattern where we had to do different stitches on it. My mother actually still has mine and my sisters hanging in frames at the house. I would love to win this book to freshen up what skills I have and learn new ones. Cross your fingers for me please!!
Thanks for the chance at the giveaway!!
This is an adorable pincushion! I would love to win the book. I made a felt purse, lipstick and wallet for my niece last year and she loved it.
I learned how to do basic embroidery 40+ years ago. (I can’t believe I said that!!) Shortly after that I learned to cross stitch really well and continued that for more than 10 years. I am now doing both again THANKS TO ALL OF YOU YOUNG AND EXTREMELY TALENTED LADIES! I love the creativity I find with all of you and would love to win Aimee’s new book. I can promise that I would make as much as I could from her book because this younger generations creativity has re-started mine like you would not believe!
I am new to embroidery, but am excited to try this project and share it with my good friend who has been doing lots of embroidery!
Just starting to dabble in embroidery. I used to cross stitch as a kid but had a hard time actually finishing anything! I’d love to have this book.
This looks amazing!!sure the rest is great too.
Very new to embroidery, but would love to pick up some new techniques, and think that crewel work is so beautiful! I have been practicing on Mother Bear faces… but haven’t gotten much beyond that!

I’ve been stitching almost my whole life and still LOVE it! I love Aimee’s stuff and look forward to learning new techniques.
I did a little cross stitch when I was a lot younger, but since then I’ve not done any. I’ve started machine sewing again, but am a bit lost to know where to start with embroidery etc!
I haven’t done much, but I’ve been wanting to learn. Great stuff!
Oh I would so love to win this book! I just love Aimee’s work!
I have been embroidering on and off for 20 years. I love the stitchery part of it but do not enjoy the tracing of a design, putting it in a hoop and all the other stuff you have to do first to get it right.
However, seeing Aimee’s mushroom has made me want to do some more.
My mom was always doing embroidery or crocheting – I learned when I was older – doing cross stitch and embroidery – love the affect you can get. I do have Aimee’s first book on Doodle Stitching – such fun designs.
I’m a beginner – I’d love to learn crewelwork and stumpwork!
Would LOVE to win this – thx for the chance. Love to embroider
I’ve done a little embroidery when I was younger, and just now starting pick it back up! I love it.
What an adorable project! I’m an experienced-novice embroiderer. I learned from my mom, a cross-stitcher whom learned from her mother a creweler. Now my sis doesn’t care for it yet we’re teaching my 9 year old niece the joys of needlework. The book sounds great for sharing with my family.
Big fan of Aimee’s work. I would love this book. I love doodle embroidery stitching..I’ve embroidered since I was very young!!
I love the doodle stitching books! This project is fabulous! thank you!
I do not know how do to crewel or stumpwork but would love to learn! I love the doodle stitching embroidery books!
I’ve dabbled a little with embroidery stitching. What a wonderful giveaway to win this book! I would love to learn more!!
I want to learn more embroidery! Mushrooms are so cute!

I love your books! The designs are beautiful… Embroidery is a relaxing way to play with colors. I am working on a baby quilt for my first grandchild, embroidering animals that go in Noah’s Ark. Also working on wool applique with embroidery. Lots of fun! Congrats on the new book!!!
I’ve always loved the ease of working with felt and the beauty of crewel embroidery. The way you combine them never fails to inspire me. I own several of your books, and this is another “must have”! Thanks for keeping me creative…now “I Gotta Go Make Something”!
I dont work and lot with hand stiching but really enjoy it when I do it. So nice and portable.. I love this pin cushion. I might have to give it a try. Thanks for the chance to win this neat book.
I have done a lot of cross stitching in the past, but quilting took over for a while. This would be wonderful to have to try new techniques that really intrigue me! Thank you for doing this giveaway!
I am a newbie to embroidery and would love to learn more.
I love her new book however, I bought a copy the other day. The book store gave me a small discount, because my book is missing pages 80-96 and it has 2 sets of pages 65-79 I’am ok with that but I thought I would let someone know so you make sure all your pages are there. Happy Embroidering!!!!!
I’ve never done embroidery, but I have been collecting lots of vintage floss and patterns because I’m so fascinated. I think it’s time to learn!
I have been stitching for many years and am quite passionate about it. I have, of course, seen Aimees books all over the internet, but have never held one in my hands due to a teeny, tiny fixed income. Obviously I would be overjoyed to wi a copy. Thank you for the opportunity…:)
I´m new to embroidery!! Love this cute proyect!!
