Cutwork Felt Bookmark from Doodle Stitching: Embroidery & Beyond + Giveaway!
Aimee Ray is back with another fun project from Doodle Stitching: Embroidery & Beyond: Crewel, Cross Stitch, Sashiko & More. Aimee shared the Mushroom Pincushion from the book last month, and she’ll be back in April with another project too! We love Aimee’s; the classic Doodle-Stitching: Fresh & Fun Embroidery for Beginners is a favorite in our sewing libraries, and the Farmer’s Market Tote Bag from Doodle Stitching: The Motif Collection: 400+ Easy Embroidery Designs is a favorite project here at Sew,Mama,Sew!

In Doodle Stitching: Embroidery & Beyond: Crewel, Cross Stitch, Sashiko & More, Aimee shows you how to experiment with a variety of techniques. There’s a wonderful Redwork & Crewel section, a pretty exploration of Sashiko and so much more. Today’s Cutwork Felt Bookmark shows you how to reinforce cut panels with stitches!
You can win a copy of Doodle Stitching: Embroidery & Beyond: Crewel, Cross Stitch, Sashiko & More with your comment below. Tell us what you’re stitching!

Cutwork embroidery involves cutting windows into your fabric and reinforcing them with special stitches.

If you haven’t tried Cutwork before, it is easy to learn using felt. This bookmark is designed to adjust to fit books from about 7- 10 inches, but you can alter the pattern to fit any sized book.
What You Need:
- 1 – 2 ½ x 12 inch piece, and 2- 2 ½ x 5 inch pieces of green or orange felt
- 2 – Pieces of Velcro, 3 inches long
- Bookmark template
- Embroidery floss
- One skein of light green 772 or one skein each of aqua 3817, orange 3853, yellow 3855
Stitches:
Overcast Stitch, Stem Stitch, Satin Stitch

Instructions:
1. Trace the bookmark template onto the large piece of felt and cut it out.
2. Use the Overcast Stitch around the holes. First stitch a row of Running stitches around the cutting pattern, then cut out the center piece of fabric. The hole will usually end up larger than the space you cut, so keep your cutting 1/8 inch inside the pattern line. Starting at the back of the fabric, bring your needle and floss up at the edge of the hole, down through the hole over the edge, and back up again right next to the first stitch. Repeat along the edge, completely covering the raw edge of felt.
3. Finish the design with the Stem and Satin Stitches.
4. Stitch the short pieces of felt to either end of the long piece, overlapping them ¼ inch.
5. Sew two rows of Velcro to either end of the bookmark. Wrap the bookmark around your favorite book and secure the Velcro in the back.

My current project is a quilt for a friend newly diagnosed with breast cancer. It’s mainly in her favorite color–RED–with some black and a leetle bit of pink for pop. There is some great silk dupioni in there with the batiks and cotton prints, and it’s looking pretty good.
I don’t do a lot of handstitching–usually only as embellishments for my sewing so I’d love to learn some techniques to give it a good go!

I am still in the planning stages of an “Embroider the Sky for 2013″ project (one French knot a day). I’ve been dutifully recording the appearance of the daily sky (at around 11 am), and will be plotting out the design soon. Then, I’ll be going French knot crazy! I need to start before the end of March so I don’t feel too far behind… Once I get caught up, it’ll be much easier to stay caught up.
And, I love this bookmark project! I’m going to see what I have on hand for supplies (but I can’t start it until I start my sky project
).
