November 2 ~ Pincushions & Pins
| Pincushions are just handy. They are also one of those beautiful, small items people always welcome as a gift! These would be great for teachers, friends and crafters on your gift list. Pins add to the total “Wow” effect! Here are our favorite pincushion tutorials on the web (and one for those “Wow” pins too): | ![]() |

Shrinky Dink Pins Who could resist these fun pins from Hillary of Wee Wonderfuls? Here is Hillary’s Shrinky Dink Tutorial. |

Patchwork Pincushion Leah, from Hyena in Petticoats, creates a beautiful pincushion with her Patchwork Pincushion Tutorial. Just as an aside, at the very last minute Leah’s tutorial pictures “disappeared” in one of those special, odd technology glitches we all run into from time to time. Leah worked hard yesterday to re-shoot all of the photos so you could enjoy this fantastic tutorial (and spread the good tidings with some great gifts over the holidays). Thank you, Leah, for all of your hard work; we appreciate it! |

Offset Square Wrist Pincushion This Offset Square Wrist Pincushion Tutorial, from June of PlanetJune, is handy for the crafter with a lot of “creative clutter!” |

Shrinky Dink pins — love those and it gives me an excuse to go to Hobby Lobby…
Thanks for a wonderful start to Handmade Holidays!
never really use a pincushion since they came out with those magnetic ones. like the idea of the wrist one, handy. made yesterday’s apron, came out so-so, ruffles still need work.
I love the shrinky dinks! I am going to make some to go with the pincushions I make for Christmas gifts!!
Thanks again for another great idea!
Vickie
I keep meaning to make a pincushion for myself — I never thought about making them as a gift for my few friends that do sew. I have a really cheap wrist cushion for myself that doesn’t stay put on my arm, so I wonder if I could work something out with velcro.
Thanks for the reminder!
Those are adorable pincushion ideas! Love the shrinky dink pins – I’ll have to try that.
I love this tutorial! These pincushions make excellent gifts for my quiliting class buddies.
Day 2, still goin’ strong. Definitely need to try the wristband pin cushion. That would come in very handy!!
this is just too much fun, seriously. I’ve made a promise to myself to craft a little (or more than a little) every day this month. Some say it takes 30 days for a habit to become ingrained, so here’s to making crafting as important as brushing and flossing!!!
I love those shrinky dink pins, too!
Thought I’d mention that Piecework Magazine is having a pincushion design contest

I really should be looking at this blog for gifts for OTHER people, but I keep finding gifts for ME! OK, one pin cushion for someone else and one for me. That’s fair.
These are GREAT! I lose needles all the time (a rather big hazard for the summer months) and so do my friends. I’ll have to make several of these
Thanks!
I love all of these ideas!
I love pincushions. I am always looking for a good pattern. Thanks so showing that pattern.
This is so exciting. Pin cushions seem so easy, but I’ve never made one before. I have lots of scraps and can’t wait to try some. Thanks for the inspiration!
Oooh, I could definitely use a wrist pincushion!
Thanks!

Those are so cute, but I’ve found that I really like the magnetic ones. Maybe I’ll make a few just to look at! The shrinky dink pins are too cute.
I love the tiny pincushions. There’s just something about tiny stuff!
I’ve never made a pincushion. I think I’ll give it a go!
i love them all! but those shrinkydink pins would be some kind of fun while sewing – and great to make for fabric swaps.
After making the apron last night, I was hanging around the computer impatiently this morning, waiting for the next tutorial. Ten A.M. and my wrist pincushion is done … I love it! Thank you so much for all these daily links.
Ooooh, I’ve been saving bottlecaps to make bottlecap-sized pin cushions. There’s a tutorial over in Flickr… somewhere.
And the shrinkydink pins are to die for
I used Hillary’s tutorial and made some shrinky dink pins! They are addictive and so, so much fun!
Beth – You are an absolute star.
Thanks so much for including my tutorial, and for the appreciative post!
All the pincushions look fabulous – can’t wait to see what’s next!
Cheers!

I’ve made an apple pincushion before, but that was a gift for someone else. Every time I sew and keep scrambling after loose pins in a box I wonder why I haven’t got around making a pincushion for myself. It’s on my to-do list…
Too cute! Thanks for sharing!
I love making pincushions. I have a nice collection myself, but they make great gifts.
Oh WOW!! I think those shrinky dink pins are so cool! I will have to get out my shrinky dink stuff and make some rite away:O)
I never cared for pin cushions. I much rather like collecting them on the table, hoping they don’t fall off and “accidently” finding them stuck to my foot when they do. I’m getting tired of the so I am planning to make the offset wrist one…super cute! =]
I love the different shapes besides just round So creative!!
I desperately need a pincushion – I still keep all of my pins in that little plastic “box” they came in – and it doesn’t even seal shut. There’s a pins-all-over-the-floor disaster just waiting to happen…
oh, how I LOVE pincushions!!! Thanks for the tutorials!
I’ve listed additional pincushion tutorials over on my blog today if anyone needs added inspiration. I think I’m gonna go with a pink and black flower shaped one!
And then off to the craft store to find some Shrinky Dink sheets.
I’m having too much fun! You girls are the best!
I love the way yall have your choices in fabrics at the bottom. I can’t wait to try all these cute ideas.
Those Tiny Pincushions are adorable!
I love to make pincushions from scraps I have. I have a lot of fabric scraps because I can’t bring myself to get rid of them…I just know I’ll need them someday.
Here’s mine: http://jusshardesigns.blogspot.com/2007/11/day-2-pincushions.html
thanks so much for sharing this wonderful tutorial!
i hope to make myself a new pincushion this weekend!
I was just saying the other day that i needed a pincushion. Can’t wait to try out one of the tutorials!
Oooooh! Can’t WAIT to try these out. I’ve had the same (single) pincushion for 10 years. I think it’s time for an upgrade! The shrinky-dink pins are incredible too!
I bought fabric to make a new pincushion for myself months ago, but I haven’t found a pattern I like–these are fabulous! I will definitely be trying them.
love the patchwork pincushion!
I love those pins…sooo cute!!
The patchwork pincushion is really sweet. I really need to make myself one of these. The one I have was my great g’ma’s I think and really beat up.
this month of tutes is going to get huge – I can sense its momentum like a snowball gathering speed and mass – at the end of the month there will be an exhausted heap of crafters from all over the world!!!
I think I’ve found my next project!
Great tutorials! But I hate it when pincushions aren’t weighty enough and slide all over the place. I’ve been contemplating filling half with lentil or walnut shell.
can’t wait to try these!
Ahhh, I think I have some shrinky dink plastic in the basement! I’d better go hunt. I was looking for the perfect pins to go in a pin cushion from the Therese Laskey “Softies” book, and these are going to be it!!!
i may just make everyone a pin cushion for christmas, even though 95% of the people i know don’t actually sew.
Another pressie to tick off the list: pincushions for best friend. One from me one from her favourite (and only) goddaughter.
I love the recycling possibilities of the tiny pincushions!
I know EXACTLY who Im going to make one of these for…thanks for the inspiration!!!
I’ve actually made shrinky dink pins before! They’re fun!
I’ve never made a pin cushion before…this should be a fun quick project!
What a great resource, I will definately be having a go at the tiny pincushions, if not the rest! I am a school teacher and these could be grat for class. love carol t
Oh, I just found the perfect gifts for my sewing students! Now I just have to decide which tutorials to use! :-S
FYI: verybigjen has a tutorial on the tiny pinkeeps on flickr.
I am enjoying your handmade ideas each day…I have your button on my sidebar so others will be able to come visit!
Those are really cute pincushions!
They are all so lovely.
Thanks again! These lists are really handy
Cute ideas, and great gift ideas. But which project to start first?
I want to make a slew of tiny pincushions! I could make one for every room in the house, then I wouldn’t be constantly looking for pins.
OK, I’m ADDICTED to those cute little pincusions. I made 2 on saturday because I could only find 2 lids – we didn’t have soda bottle lids so I snagged two off of salad dressing bottles that were *almost* empty : D I LOVE them. I’ll be making more.
Ooh that patchwork pincushion is so nice looking. I’m going to have to run to the fabric store agian!
I have wanted to make myself a pincushion for a long time, and am thinking that they, along with other ideas from Handmade Holidays would make some great gifts for sisters, Bible study friends and sisrers! Thanks so much for all the great thoughts! Marcia
I finally got around to posting a tutorial on my blog for making an apple shaped pin cushion, so stop by if you’re interested – it’s a very forgiving project for beginner like me.
Does anyone have a idea for a western type pin cushion? Thanks!
PS. I posted a pear pincushion tutorial too
Hey I make my big patchwork pin cushions just like that! Cool!
Kim
Oh, your pinkeeps are awesome!!!
That Hillary, she’s everywhere with her cuteness! I’m definitely going to make some shrinky dink pins. After reading the tutorial, I think I may attempt to make the shrinky dink part flat against the pin so that I may use them in sewing, instead of just for pretty.
I also wanted to say the growing tutorials list has quickly become my “go to” spot for all things sewing and crafty, such a treasure trove. Thank You!!
I’ve made the bottle cap pincushions and they are so easy. I love the idea of shrinky dink pins. That is a great additon to a pinsushion for a gift.I need some for myself too! Very cute! Nice pincushion tutorials here. Love seeing the differnt designs created.
Thanks for more goodies to look at.
what a neat little gift to make someone! And we can ALL use a pincushion….or two…or three!!!
last minute christmas gifts…
I saw something about that on TV last night….
