November 2 ~ Pincushions & Pins

Pincushions are just handy. They are also one of those beautiful, small items people always welcome as a gift! These would be great for teachers, friends and crafters on your gift list. Pins add to the total “Wow” effect! Here are our favorite pincushion tutorials on the web (and one for those “Wow” pins too):
Tiny Pincushion
Jess shows how to repurpose bottle caps in this Tiny Pincushion Tutorial on How About Orange.
Shrinky Dink Pins
Who could resist these fun pins from Hillary of Wee Wonderfuls? Here is Hillary’s Shrinky Dink Tutorial.
Patchwork Pincushion
Leah, from Hyena in Petticoats, creates a beautiful pincushion with her Patchwork Pincushion Tutorial.
Just as an aside, at the very last minute Leah’s tutorial pictures “disappeared” in one of those special, odd technology glitches we all run into from time to time. Leah worked hard yesterday to re-shoot all of the photos so you could enjoy this fantastic tutorial (and spread the good tidings with some great gifts over the holidays). Thank you, Leah, for all of your hard work; we appreciate it!
Offset Square Wrist Pincushion
This Offset Square Wrist Pincushion Tutorial, from June of PlanetJune, is handy for the crafter with a lot of “creative clutter!”

Shrinky Dink pins — love those and it gives me an excuse to go to Hobby Lobby… :) Thanks for a wonderful start to Handmade Holidays!

never really use a pincushion since they came out with those magnetic ones. like the idea of the wrist one, handy. made yesterday’s apron, came out so-so, ruffles still need work.

I love the shrinky dinks! I am going to make some to go with the pincushions I make for Christmas gifts!!
Thanks again for another great idea!

I keep meaning to make a pincushion for myself — I never thought about making them as a gift for my few friends that do sew. I have a really cheap wrist cushion for myself that doesn’t stay put on my arm, so I wonder if I could work something out with velcro.

    Thanks for the reminder!

Those are adorable pincushion ideas! Love the shrinky dink pins – I’ll have to try that.

I love this tutorial! These pincushions make excellent gifts for my quiliting class buddies.

Day 2, still goin’ strong. Definitely need to try the wristband pin cushion. That would come in very handy!!

  8. Deb responds:

this is just too much fun, seriously. I’ve made a promise to myself to craft a little (or more than a little) every day this month. Some say it takes 30 days for a habit to become ingrained, so here’s to making crafting as important as brushing and flossing!!!

I love those shrinky dink pins, too!

I really should be looking at this blog for gifts for OTHER people, but I keep finding gifts for ME! OK, one pin cushion for someone else and one for me. That’s fair.

  11. Jay responds:
    Posted: November 2nd, 2007 at 8:11 am →

These are GREAT! I lose needles all the time (a rather big hazard for the summer months) and so do my friends. I’ll have to make several of these :)
    Thanks!

i love them all! but those shrinkydink pins would be some kind of fun while sewing – and great to make for fabric swaps.

After making the apron last night, I was hanging around the computer impatiently this morning, waiting for the next tutorial. Ten A.M. and my wrist pincushion is done … I love it! Thank you so much for all these daily links.

Ooooh, I’ve been saving bottlecaps to make bottlecap-sized pin cushions. There’s a tutorial over in Flickr… somewhere.

And the shrinkydink pins are to die for :)

I’ve made an apple pincushion before, but that was a gift for someone else. Every time I sew and keep scrambling after loose pins in a box I wonder why I haven’t got around making a pincushion for myself. It’s on my to-do list…

  25. MaryBeth responds:

Oh WOW!! I think those shrinky dink pins are so cool! I will have to get out my shrinky dink stuff and make some rite away:O)

  28. adrienne responds:
    Posted: November 2nd, 2007 at 11:09 am →

I never cared for pin cushions. I much rather like collecting them on the table, hoping they don’t fall off and “accidently” finding them stuck to my foot when they do. I’m getting tired of the so I am planning to make the offset wrist one…super cute! =]

  29. Rachelle responds:

I love the different shapes besides just round So creative!!

  30. Lisa Clarke responds:
    Posted: November 2nd, 2007 at 11:38 am →

I desperately need a pincushion – I still keep all of my pins in that little plastic “box” they came in – and it doesn’t even seal shut. There’s a pins-all-over-the-floor disaster just waiting to happen…

  31. Lisa NYC responds:
    Posted: November 2nd, 2007 at 11:44 am →

oh, how I LOVE pincushions!!! Thanks for the tutorials!

I’ve listed additional pincushion tutorials over on my blog today if anyone needs added inspiration. I think I’m gonna go with a pink and black flower shaped one!

And then off to the craft store to find some Shrinky Dink sheets.

I’m having too much fun! You girls are the best!

  44. Carol responds:

Great tutorials! But I hate it when pincushions aren’t weighty enough and slide all over the place. I’ve been contemplating filling half with lentil or walnut shell.

  45. Coralee responds:

    can’t wait to try these!

  46. Kirstin responds:

Ahhh, I think I have some shrinky dink plastic in the basement! I’d better go hunt. I was looking for the perfect pins to go in a pin cushion from the Therese Laskey “Softies” book, and these are going to be it!!!

I want to make a slew of tiny pincushions! I could make one for every room in the house, then I wouldn’t be constantly looking for pins.

  61. Michelle responds:

OK, I’m ADDICTED to those cute little pincusions. I made 2 on saturday because I could only find 2 lids – we didn’t have soda bottle lids so I snagged two off of salad dressing bottles that were *almost* empty : D I LOVE them. I’ll be making more.

That Hillary, she’s everywhere with her cuteness! I’m definitely going to make some shrinky dink pins. After reading the tutorial, I think I may attempt to make the shrinky dink part flat against the pin so that I may use them in sewing, instead of just for pretty.
I also wanted to say the growing tutorials list has quickly become my “go to” spot for all things sewing and crafty, such a treasure trove. Thank You!!
