November 1 ~ Wear

We’re kicking off our third annual Handmade Holidays with Gifts to Wear. Brighten someone’s days with a really big and beautiful poppy boutonniere, make a tablecloth skirt for your best friend & greet 2010 with style only the right cuff can give… Let the gift-making begin!

Make It

spacer Poppy Boutonniere
Kathleen from Grosgrain shows you how her Poppy Boutonnieres make the perfect accessories (adorn everything from silk pillows to a favorite sweater).
spacer Ruffle Top
We think our Ruffle Top from Rae is super-cute, easy and gives you really nice options, whether you select contrasting or complementary fabrics for the main pieces.
spacer Scrappy Selvedge Bracelet
A Scrappy Selvedge Bracelet from Steph at Stephalicious might be the perfect thing for someone on your holiday list…
spacer Bandana Dress
Julie from Joy’s Hope has an easy Bandana Dress Tutorial for all of the little girls on your list. She writes, “I also think that a little package of two bandanas, elastic, a spool ribbon and thread along with a little card for sewing lessons would be a wonderful gift. So many of my friends want to learn how to sew but are scared and something like that might just be the confidence they needed.”
spacer Ruffle Skirt
Our Ruffle Skirt by Emu is another easy project with high impact. This one works for girls and women!
spacer Mama Chic Wrist Cuff
The Mama Chic Wrist Cuff from Jennifer at JCasa *handmade is fun to create in multiples!
spacer Table Cloth Skirt
Vanessa from V and Co. has a fantastic Table Cloth Skirt Tutorial. She adds that table cloths often go on “major sales” so you can make some bargain skirts!

Born-Again Vintage: 25 Ways to Deconstruct, Reinvent and Recycle Your Wardrobe

By Bridgett Artise and Jen Karetnick

(Potter Craft, $24.95, ISBN:978-0-307-40527-2 (0-307-40527-3))

From the Publisher:

Fashion designer Bridgett Artise believes in second chances—a philosophy that extends all the way to her clothing line, B. Artise Originals. Fashion gave her a second chance at happiness and success, and, in turn, she gives vintage garments that have lost their luster another chance at being fashionable. Mixing contemporary clothing with the best elements of a vintage piece—like the collar of a funky fifties housedress or the pockets of a seventies-style jacket—and piecing them back together in a whole new way, she creates one-of-a-kind garments that are both trend setting and timeless. An old-fashioned ruffled shirt with terrific buttons, plus an inexpensive tank top, can become a unique top. A poodle skirt and that so-last-year’s knee-length cardigan sweater can be turned into anything from a mini-poncho to a structured tube top. With fashions for every season, Born-Again Vintage contains patterns for:
  • Pants that pair perfectly with winter boots and a sweater dress that’s sexy and simple
  • A cropped jacket + sweater corset that are perfect for a flirty spring fling
  • Dresses + bags to keep summer easy and breezy
  • Pretty-in-a-blink dresses + accessories for a big night out
Born-Again Vintage updates the trends of fashion eras gone by and brings the unparalleled quality of vintage into a new age. Complete with a vintage shopping guide, handy style tips, and ideas for reinventing disused cast-offs, Born-Again Vintage is a must-have for vintage shoppers and sewers alike.

Our apple trees went wild with abundance this year and I have so much canned apple pie filling I was planning on giving it away as gifts. The pie in a jar idea sounds like a much better way to use the filling as gifts, with absolutely no effort on the part of the recipient. Better yet, I can make an assortment of other fillings for those who aren’t wild about apple pie. Kudos!

The bandana dress also sounds like a great gift kit idea for my daughter who is expecting in January. She is a reluctant sewer, but a kit like this will let her stretch her sewing muscles without getting burnt out.

Don’t know if I’m eligible since I live overseas (Holland), but I think this book looks fantastic. Especially because there aren’t many thrift stores around here and the few that do exist aren’t great so the chances of finding even a t-shirt that I like as-is are slim to none… so everything needs re-fashioning.
