November 10 ~ Craft

Today’s gift ideas ideas are perfect for the crafters in your life! You may also want a few Craft gifts for yourself this year… (Take advantage of our archive links today too– There are tons of great projects in there.)

Make It

spacer Hex Pincushion
Malka shows you how to make these pretty Hex Pincushions at a stitch in dye. We’re also very excited about Malka’s new book, released earlier this month! Color Your Cloth: A Quilter’s Guide to Dyeing and Patterning Fabric looks beautiful. Malka writes, “It’s got lots of information for folks who want to learn how to dye and pattern fabric with wax resist and 12 patterns to sew.”
spacer “Housewives” Needlecase
Melissa recently shared her “Housewives” Needlecase Pattern at tiny happy. The pattern is based on a version she found in a vintage craft book. (Be sure to check out Melissa’s Coco version too!)
spacer Pincushion Organizer
Our Pincushion Organizer from Elizabeth includes lots of ingenious little details to make your sewing more efficient (and your sewing area more beautiful!).
spacer Crochet Project Roll
You can easily adapt our Crochet Project Roll Tutorial from Lara to fit knitting needles, paintbrushes or crayons!
spacer Kitten (Kid?) Proof Sewing Organizer for Sofa or Travel
Susan from FlossieBlossoms shares this clever organizer tutorial for sewing on the go. Susan writes, ” I live in NW Arkansas in the Ozark Mts with one happy husband, 3 dogs and 4 rascally cats, one of whom prompted the invention of this particular sewing caddy– a kitten well-named ‘Nosey Parker,’ who wanted to eat my pins, needles and thread. Hence– a fold-up, portable, put-away-able sewing organizer/sofa caddy. I made this to fit MY needs, but it’s very customizable, I hope people will take what I’ve given them and change it if they need to and make it work for them. The caddy is very handy and would make a great gift for a sewer or stitcher. I made mine out of selvages, but I’ve also made several using regular quilting cottons and they always turn out great.”
spacer Checkered Pincushion
We like this tiny Checkered Pincushion from Sharon at The Sproutz Store Blog. It would make a nice little ornament for a crafter too, with some ribbon attached in a loop at the corner.

You might also enjoy these related tutorials from the SMS archives: Patchwork Sewing Machine Cover, Fabric Boxes (perfect for craft areas), Drawstring Bags (the Bagsket link is a great tote for knitters), Gifts for the Crafter, Pincushions & Pins, Gifts for Artists, (More) Gifts for Crafters

spacer Vintage Sewing Machine Journals from kate blocher book shop
Kate writes, “I love to sew and have always wanted a vintage sewing machine. I always have a place to write down inspirations and sketch out my next project, which is how I came up with this hand-screenprinted and hand-bound book. It is the perfect gift for any seamstress!” Kate’s Vintage Sewing Machine Journals are on clearance at the moment, and are just one of many pretty designs in her shop.

How Much Fabric Reference Cards

Gwyn Hug

Set 1: Women’s Clothes
Fabric yardage requirements printed on 5 cards:
  • Skirts
  • Pants
  • Tops
  • Dresses
  • Jackets
Card size: 3⅜” x 2⅛” (Credit card size)
  • Sometimes the perfect fabric catches your eye and demands to be bought, but you do not have a particular pattern in hand. How much should you buy?
  • These reference cards will help you estimate as accurately as possible, by providing tables that summarize actual fabric requirements from real patterns, broken down by outfit size and fabric width.
  • Over 2,000 patterns were used to build the tables, including patterns from Simplicity, McCalls, Butterick, Vogue, Burda, Neue Mode, Kwik Sew, Hot Patterns, & New Look.

So many great projects! I love seeing the vintage sewing machine journals . . . wouldn’t that silhouette be perfect for a wall art thingie? My other fav is the kitten-proof sewing organizer. My kitty loves to pull pins out of the pincusion with her sharp little teeth. Aargh! I need to make this little foldie organizer.

That Owl measuring tape is the absolute cutest thing! The Fabric reference cards would sure come in handy. I usually buy in 3 yard increments for apparel if I don’t have a plan but just love the fabric. For quilt fabrics, I buy in 1/2 yard increments because I love scrap quilts.

  195. Nichole responds:
    Posted: November 10th, 2009 at 12:31 pm →

Cute stuff – but I wish you would showcase one of the tutorial items on the front page photo (before the jump) on some of the days. Every day I see a cute little photo teaser and think I’m going to get instructions on how to make it, only to find that it is a for sale item. I do love supporting handmade artisans, but I think most of us are here because we want to make things ourselves; otherwise we’d be cruising etsy instead. Just my 2 cents – but I am loving the handmade holidays, so thanks for all your compilations!

So many cute ideas – I’ll have to make myself a gift, too! :) The cozies book looks great; my MIL has some older, plain cozies… The cover photo gives me some good inspiration. Thanks!
