Elizabeth’s Fabric Focus ~ Laminated Fabric Recipe Cards & Recipe Folder

Each month Elizabeth from Oh, Fransson! shares a fun project with us, and features one of our current collections in the Sew,Mama,Sew! shop. This month’s project with PDF download instructions features Riley Blake’s Bloom and Grow collection.

Find all of Elizabeth’s monthly tutorials on our blog: Quick-Piece Tiny Squares, Charm Squares Baby Quilt, Advent Calendar, Stack & Nest Quilted Blocks, Laptop Sleeve, April Bags, Pincushion Organizer, Ponytail Scarves, Sawtooth Stars. Any of Elizabeth’s projects would make great holiday gifts! Elizabeth also has a wonderful selection of PDF patterns for sale in her Etsy shop and many beautiful projects and helpful sewing resources on Oh, Fransson!

Happy Thanksgiving, everyone! As many of us are enjoying good food today, it seemed like a great time for a project that celebrated favorite recipes. One year for Christmas, my mother made my sisters and I each a set of recipe cards that included all of the recipes that she uses most often. It was a wonderful gift that I continue to use all the time.

So, in the spirit of sharing and remembering favorite recipes, I’ve written up a simple project for creating laminated, fabric-backed recipe cards and a handy folder to store them in. You can download the pattern and instructions for the Laminated Recipe Cards & Recipe Folder, and get right to work!

For this project, I used fabrics from Riley Blake’s Bloom and Grow collection. I love the warm chocolate brown and orange accented with light aqua blue, especially on the Bloom Vine print used for the outside of the folder and the Bloom Daisy print used on the inside.

The recipe cards are laminated using iron-on vinyl. I tested other materials, including contact paper and regular non-fusible vinyl, but the iron-on vinyl was the clear winner in terms of ease of use and look of the finished product. (If you don’t want to fiddle with lamination, you can always fill one of these folders with regular non-laminated recipe cards.)

As always, if you do end up using this pattern, we’d love to see the results in the Sew,Mama,Sew! Photo Pool. (And if you’re looking for my cookie recipes, you can find them here: http://www.ohfransson.com/oh_fransson/baking/)

I love this idea! I love the idea of lamianting the cards. I wonder if it would work with regular laminate and a laminating machine?

Taking a sit-down break from all the cooking and cleaning up. I’m so happy I ordered some of these fabrics last night BEFORE they are GONE! I am sure, after seeing these ideas, the fabrics will fly out of the store. I can’t wait to get mine now. I want to make the recipe holder, and more. Thanks for all the fabulous ideas. Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

    Thanks, everyone.

Andi, I think it would work fine with a regular laminator, but I would still use the fusible webbing first to stiffen the fabric and adhere it the back of the card.

You have a good taste choosing the kind of fabric and the colors that match.
