February 28 ~ Quilt of the Day

The Flood
By Carrie, Whole Cloth Designs

The Flood measures 40″ X 40″ and Carrie did most of the applique and all the embroidery by hand. The top is linen, with recycled fabrics (cotton, wool and linen). Carrie writes, “It is about my experience with postpartum depression… I used the image of our house to personify my experience.”

Carrie was influenced by Louise Bourgeois’ early work Femme Maison, 1947, and used a stem stitch, back stitch and running stitch for the embroidery. Read more about the story behind the quilt on Carrie’s Whole Cloth Designs blog, find detail images here and visit Carrie’s Etsy shop too.

Carrie has done an important thing in documenting an important time in her life. There is a deep and rich history of women making quilts that have helped them to grieve and heal, as well as to celebrate, all ages and stages of life. It is a way of telling the story of what it means to be a woman. Thank you for sharing this important quilt with us.

More and more I realize that the things we sew are truly art, and Carrie has proven it here. There is a lot more involved than thread, fabric and a sewing machine, especially in this quilt that shows us her heart. Thank you Carrie.
