February is Quilting Month!

We don’t want to go crazy with the analogies, but you know how the little pieces of a quilt come together to create something magical? We’ve been busy with all of the little pieces of Quilting Month and it’s going to be a wonderful month of fun here on the Sew,Mama,Sew! blog. Our resources, articles, inspiration pieces, interviews and projects for the month are sure to appeal to sewists and quilters of all skill and experience levels. It’s Quilting Month because quilting is a part of so many projects we love; the techniques we explore can apply to patchwork in a bag just as well as they can in a quilt (though we guarantee you’ll want to make a quilt by March!).

You can look forward to:

  • FAT QUARTER GIVE-AWAYS! Every Friday we’ll give away two packs of 10 fat quarters from Sew,Mama,Sew!  We’ll randomly select the winners from all blog comments in the previous week.  The first give-away is next Friday, February 1, so all comments from this point on are eligible for the drawings.
  • A Quilt of the Day feature, sharing a huge variety of our favorite quilts.
  • A Quilt Block Sew-Along! Every week we’ll share how to create a new quilt block. We can all make one in a big, virtual sewing bee and add our photos to the Quilting Month photo group. We’ll feature your blocks from the group on the blog too, with links back to your blog or photo set. We’ll have lots more information about our sew-along with our first block on February 1st but here’s your sneak peek: lots of 9-Patch variations, Log Cabin & Courthouse Steps and Pinwheel variations!
  • Articles, projects, guidance and interviews from some of our favorite quilters including Jennifer from Moving Hands, Denyse Schmidt, Kathy from Pink Chalk Studio, Amy from Happythings and Gina from QuiltersBuzz and Threaded Pear!
  • Top ten quilting books, batting resources, binding resources, information on quilting your pieced work, handstitching help and much, much more…

We can’t wait! If you’d like to help spread the word, feel free to use the button above (http://www.sewmamasew.com/media/blog/quiltingmonth.jpg) and link back to this post.

Yay! I got into a wee bit of quilting when I was in high school, by way of my mom’s new hobby. She has since made millions of quilts, I have made very few. I am looking forward to seeing NEW ways to present old patterns. I love the modern looks these days, so I’m hoping your readers will help kick it up a notch. Of course, I do still love the old fashioned farm looking quilts now and then, but the modern fabric out there…so much fun!

I’m just returning to sewing after a considerable absence…something like 30 years.

I have a confession to make. I have always associated quilting with old ladies. But now I find I AM an old lady, and much to my surprise, I find that young and old both are doing it.

I don’t know if I have it in me to make a whole quilt, but I’m warming to the idea of sewing little strips of scraps together for gussying up my simple aprons and bags like those I’ve been coveting in the photo pools.

So I’m looking forward to reading all that you’ve put together about quilting and hope to overcome my former bias and try some teeny, tiny patchwork.

Well you have done it again! I thought Bag month in August was the ultimate, but quilt month!…that is even better. I am a quilter and a “bag lady” so this is pure bliss. At first I was thinking that having February for quilt month was a little bittersweet, with Feb. being the shortest month of the year, but then I remembered that this is a leap year, so I felt somewhat soothed. I am so looking forward to this and will be spreading the word at our quilt retreat this weekend and our guild meeting next week. Sew Mama Sew!

just a note: i totally ruined a quilt project yesterday…i’m still new to all of this and i tried something before i really thought it through…so upset, but then i remembered some wise words from my mom about this whole quilting/sewing world that has opened up for me…posted about it on my blog and thought i would share here as well because i see so many comments from first-timers and those that are a little scared to try something so new and so big…”this whole quilting/sewing experience is supposed to be enjoyable and fun! if it’s tearful or a struggle, then that whole purpose is defeated…” everyone, have fun! there are going to be a few mistakes at first, a few crooked cuts, a few seams that don’t line up…but that’s part of the learning process and your new hobby will bring you so much more joy than all the mistakes in the world can take away…=)

Quilting Month has been great. I never really knew much about quilting. My impressions had been that is a very matronly hobby which is not very interesting, and only mildly creative. The county home themes and calico prints all seemed very homely and boring. How wrong was I!!!! Many of the quilts you have shown this month are spectacular and incredibly inspiring. I’ve already read 2 books on quilting since the month began and am about to start my own first quilt.
