Pattern Review ~ Anna Tunic
![]() |
From Beth: Stephanie loved the style and detailing of Amy Butler’s new Anna Tunic. She gives it a very positive review below and provides great tips too. It’s easy to tell just how beautiful Stephanie’s tunic is from her photos! Enjoy Stephanie’s review and her introduction.
* Please note that the design includes patterns for the Anna Tunic, cami, dress mini dress and fabric flower. |
| Pattern | |||
| Amy Butler Anna Tunic | |||
| Description | |||
| Mod style and clean lines give this tunic it’s “annatude.” The back has a unique button closure. Add the belt for an hourglass shape, and the sweet fabric flower makes for an artistic accent piece to ginger up your Anna Tunic. (from the pattern)

|||
| Fabric Recommendations | |||
| Lightweight cottons such as quilting cottons for the exterior, cotton batiste for the lining. | |||
| Materials | |||
| You can find a list of materials via the Anna Tunic in the store. Click “View Larger Image” below the pattern image for a full view of the back of the pattern. |
|||
| Overall Design | |||
| I love the look of this tunic. The yoke with the buttons in the back adds an interesting and stylish touch to what would otherwise be just a basic tunic. I think this look would flatter many body types. The tunic is fully lined and all seams are enclosed for a very professional finished look. |
|
||
| Written Instructions | |||
| Amy’s instructions were very clear and concise. I think both new and advanced sewers would be able to understand her explanations very easily. |
|||
| Diagrams / Images | |||
| Many helpful diagrams are included in the instructions. A lot of times it’s easier to see something done than to read how it’s done. |
|||
| Pattern Pieces | |||
| All of the pattern pieces are included on one tissue sheet and easily identifiable. The mini dress, tunic, and cami all use the same pattern pieces. |
|||
| Overall Level of Difficulty | Intermediate |
||
| Those who are new to sewing clothes might find the gathering stitches and the amount of curves to sew a little difficult.
Detail showing the yoke with buttons in the back. |
|||
| Modifications + Tips |
|||
| ~ Since several different looks are included in this one pattern, I recommend tracing the pattern from the tissue sheet so that you keep all of your pattern pieces intact.
~ Make sure you transfer all the markings from the pattern pieces to the fabric. ~ Go slow. There are several curves in this design which are a bit more challenging to sew than straight seams. ~ Make a muslin first. This will allow you to test out the pattern in a cheaper fabric and allow you to alter it to make it fit better.
|
|||
| Conclusion | |||
| Amy Butler has made another outstanding pattern. I really like this tunic! The tunic and mini dress can be worn with a long sleeve shirt underneath in the colder months and sleeveless in the spring and summer for a year-round look. | |||

Great review! I just bought this pattern and your review will be helpful in making it. Thanks so much! The tunic you made is just gorgeous.
Looks great!! Putting this on my “to sew” list.
I just made the tunic with cap sleeves this weekend and I LOVE it! As someone just beginning to sew again after learning in when I was about 9 (4-H class) I only needed a little help with the zipper and the cap sleeves. I gathered the cap sleeves a little too much and need to redo the binding around them but can’t wait to make it one of my mainstay fashion pieces!!
Love it! Those buttons on the back are such a nice touch!
I love this tunic and the fab ric is gorgeous. Thank you for the suggestions. I definitely want to try this pattern, you make it sound like something I can accomplish. Thanks for the review
Great job! Unfortunately I’ve got a lot of things to sew before I get to this, but maybe it can be my summertime goal!
It looks great Stephanie! Wonderful review!
I love the fabric. Thanks for the great review.
Excellent pattern review! I’ve been thinking about trying this Amy Butler pattern, but wasn’t sure about it, since I’ve heard both positive and negative about Amy Butler patterns. This one sounds do-able for me. Love the fabric choice!
I am working on this now and am so thankful for this review. I haven’t sewn many clothing patterns and am so intimidated I’m not going to understand all the markings on this one. That said, I’m plowing forward.
Thanks again!
I was so inspired I bought this pattern after reading the review. Never made something for myself before, just kids clothes. Super Excited, thanks for the review!
this is so nice, I love it!
I’ve looked at this pattern several times! I think it would be great on my daughter.
Thanks for the review, and the tips!
The buttons are very classy! Little touches and great fabric are what make the clothes for me.
Stephanie, you are awesome! I think your tunic and photos are better and more flattering than the one on the front of the published pattern. I wouldn’t have taken a second look at it before, and now I’m seriously considering “taking the leap” into sewing clothing, too…
looks very lovely.
Oh, wow. What a gorgeous top. I’ve been toying with sewing my own threads for a while. This may have just cinched the deal for me! Love the fabric choice, too.
Your top came out so cute! I just ordered the Anna pattern and I will definitely be referring to your tips when I make it. Thanks for a great review
I’m going to check out your blog now too!
I’ve never been one to make clothes. It’s very intimidating for me. It’s nice to know that this could be done by a beginner. Thank you for the review!

This one’s a definite maybe on my list of clothes I plan to make. I might build up my courage with other thinsg first, though.
Thanks for the review, Stephanie! This is a pattern I would have otherwise probably ignored. But I’m going to have to check it out for sure now.
Great job!!
Thanks for the review! I’ve been thinking about trying this Amy Butler pattern but I’ve never sewn any clothes before…
Nice! And beautiful fabric too.
you mentioned tracing your pattern. what do you trace it onto?
thanks, liz

This pattern has been on my must haves. Now with a great review I want it even more!
wow. i’ll have to pick that pattern up, it’s really beautiful in that fabric.
Thanks for all of your wonderful comments on my finished tunic!
Liz, I use what I think is called “Pattern Perfect” paper I bought from Joann’s (in the interfacing section). It is thin enough that you can lay it on top of the pattern piece and just trace out the pattern. I’m sure there are a lot of different ways to trace the pattern, but that has been the easiest for me so far.
Wow! That’s a pretty tunic! Thanks for the review – I want to make it this weekend!
This is absolutely beautfiul! I would love to make something like this *sigh. Unfortunately, I don’t trust myself to make my own clothes!
Great review!! I might have to give this one a try. Thanks! Your pictures look great!!
Looking forward to making this one, thanks for the review.
