Quilting for Peace ~ Join our Team!
In September we conducted a poll to find out what you’d like to see on the blog in the future. Many of you left comments about your desire to see more opportunities to contribute to charities through craft. This is important to us too, so we were happy to see that there were so many of you looking for ways to become sewing activists.
We were really excited when we heard about Quilting for Peace: Make the World a Better Place One Stitch at a Time. In the book, Katherine Bell turns the spotlight on 25 organizations that effect change through sewing. It includes stories about groups who provide bedding for the homeless, organizations who make quilts for soldiers, people who make items for Newborns in Need and many others. In addition to heart-warming tales of generosity and love, the book also includes 15 simple projects that you can make and give.
We were very inspired by the book and the encouragement to Get Involved, so we’ve planned a little Quilting for Peace effort of our own and we hope you’ll be a part of it. We have a post lined up every day this week and a thread in the forum for your discussion, questions, ideas and photos. We’ll also have a little contest during which you’ll have the opportunity to win some great prizes from Fiskars. Here’s what’s up:
On Wednesday Katherine Bell will be our guest. We’ve asked her a few questions about the book and what it means to be a sewing activist.
On Thursday we’ll tell you about Wrap them in Love, an organization that collects handmade quilts and distributes them to children around the world. We’ll give you some links to quick and easy quilt patterns and encourage you to make a quilt of any size for a child (of any size.) This project will run through January.
On Friday we’ll give you some information about Morsbags and a reader of SMS, The Green Bag Lady. Both have a goal of reducing our usage of paper and plastic grocery bags by giving away cloth bags. We’ll direct you to some bag tutorials and challenge you to a Grocery Bag Sew-Off. You’ll be doing the earth a favor and you might just win some great products from Fiskars in the process! This project will run through December 22nd.
So, we know you’re crazy busy with holiday preparations and festivities, but we do hope you’ll join the Quilting for Peace Team Sew,Mama,Sew! and help us spread a little love this season. Share a bit of your time and talents as a sewing activist. If you’d like to be a part of our team, please go to this thread in our forum and let us know that you’d like to participate (in one or both of our efforts.) As an extra incentive, one person who comments in the forum thread will win a copy of Quilting for Peace! (You don’t need to decide today. We’ll pick a winner and rally our team on Friday.)

This is great, I am a regulat user of cloth grocery bags, they are wonderful, I would love to get a chance to use some of my stash and give away a bag at the same time.
Count me in also, my guild just made over 40 pillowcase for ConCerr cancer. What a way to give back to others in need.
I purchased this book a couple of weeks ago and it is lovely. There is a lot of information on various ways to get involved, as well as some simple projects to make for each charity. This is a great idea, I hope I can contribute!
The joy of giving is with us all year long. I started a group to make comfort quilts for children involved with The Children’s Aid Society in our County. What fun and joy we get out of this. It is so rewarding to hear the stories of some of the children who receive our quilts. we include a label and ak the worker to write the childs name on it, so that the quilt becomes theirs forever to take whereever they go. (And we know that many of these children, it will be the only thing they “own”. Thanks for bringing our attention to how rewarding and important it is to give back!

Wonderful ideas. The quilt guild I belong to makes various items for local hospitals, shelters and other programs. Every guild I know of has community projects. The fabric shop where I work part-time completed 224 placemats for our local home delivered meals program (fabric,etc. provided free by the store with mats made by volunteers)

I sew regularly for our guild children’s quilt project and have logged almost 100 morsebags that I’ve made and given out at a local farmers market. SO sign me up.
I’m in!! As a Project Linus Chapter Coordinator, I make quilts, on a regular basis, for children in need. On occasion, we get a Thank You note from one of the children who receive our blankets. Nothing makes the heart sing like knowing how much these blankets mean to these children!

I have worked with a group called “Adopt a Chaplain” forn several years. An individual or group adopts a military chaplain who serves somewhere in the Middle East. Though I’m not a fan of the war, these chaplains serve the soldiers who are there. Two years ago I started making liturgical stoles for the chaplains. These are hip legnth stoles made out of cotton or silk fabric with their unit patch on one side and a cross on then other. I don’t care about denomination, I’ll make one for whoever requests or needs one. (I’ve sewn for Catholic and just about every Protestant denomination chaplains, (I can sew something for the Jewish Chaplains if they need something, I just have never been asked) The soldiers and the chaplains have responded weill tomy stoles and I enjoy individualizing them for an particular chaplain.

This is a fantastic idea!!! There is a wonderful organization you should consider for this. http://www.sishope.org. They send reusable cloth menstrual pads to girls and women in poverty. They are always looking for women to chip in and sew reusable pads.
