Free Fabric Friday

December is looking merry and bright around here!  We received several beautiful collections this week.  In the spirit of the season, we’re going to give away a little bit of all of them.

Little Folks Voile by Anna Maria Horner

We’re very excited to have the complete collection of Anna Maria’s newest group!  This 54″ wide cotton voile is a beautiful, light-weight fabric with a silky, flowing drape.  It’s great for quilting and apparel and can be used as a sheer in home dec applications. We’ll give away one yard to two people.

Dolce by Tanya Whelan

Tanya Whelan’s new group is a departure from her usual style but just as (dare we say “more”?) beautiful!  We have all 26 pieces from this sherbety collection.  Well give away one yard to three people.

Wild Thyme by Carolyn Gavin

Carolyn Gavin of Ecojot has taken some of her fabulous designs to cloth!  We’ll give away one fat quarter pack of all 20 prints in the collection.

Quilts of Gee’s Bend Solids from Windham Fabrics

We have packs of 23 fat quarters of hand-dyed poplin solids from the Quilts of Gee’s Bend fabric group.  These solids make a statement and would be a wonderful addition to anyone’s stash.  We’ll give away one fat quarter pack of all 23 colors.

Don’t forget our current Quilting For Peace Team Sew,Mama,Sew! events:

  • Wrap Them in Love quilts.  This project runs through January, so it isn’t too late to join us.
  • SMS Grocery Bag Sew-Off!  Win great prizes from Fiskars!  Ends December 22nd.
  • Gifts for Givers.  Nominate a generous crafter–he or she might just get a small prize for her kindness.

Finally, if your family is like mine and they’re still bugging you for last minute gift ideas for you, you could always tell them about our sewing patterns, embroidery patterns, hand-sewing kits, fat quarter packs and gift certificates!  (And we still have lots of items in our sale and clearance sections!)

Tell us which one of the above prizes you’d most like to win and what you might make with it.  We’ll announce the winners on Monday.  Have a great (and productive!) weekend.

Oooo! I’m in love with the entire Wild Thyme collection! So many possibilities here. My 2nd favorite item is absolutely the Little Honey Ink flowers in blue!!! And of course the Marilyn Grey and Ella Ice fabrics are beautiful too!

My girls are 7 and 12 and really want a bunch of new dresses and skirts for Christmas this year, so I’d most likely try to make one of those teeshirt dresses with a long sleeve top trimmed just below the bust and this yummy fabric sewn on for the bottom half of the dress.

Thanks for the awesome giveaway! :D

I’d have to pick Little Folks Voile (look at the cute houses!!) to complete a few projects I’m working on (a purse, a coffee cozy, and pockets for my cape!).

  21. Erin responds:

Lots of people in the blogosphere are talking about the texture of Anna Maria Horner’s new Voile. I would love to feel the silkiness for myself. Perhaps I would make youngest one a skirt.

  23. wintu nancy responds:
    Posted: December 17th, 2009 at 11:51 pm →

What a decision to make. Guess I would have to pick the Wild Thyme fat quarters. Would love the voile, but can’t make a garment from one yard, so might just have to buy some!

  24. Beth responds:
    Posted: December 17th, 2009 at 11:51 pm →

I love “Wild Thyme” by Carolyn Gavin! I have three girls I love to sew for, so I’m thinking some cute and funky outfits! I like how the collection can be mixed and matched to coordinate, yet the patterns are all so different! The wheels are definitely turning…I’m thinking cute little pants with a little wide ruffle on the bottom, with a funky coordianted shirt…pillowcase dresses with a wide hem at the bottom in a different funky pattern…the possibilities are endless!!! Cute, cute designs!!!

Ack ~ So much loveliness, I never can decide!

Dolce would be nice for making my daughter some new clothes, but I really NEED some good solids. Sigh..Wild Thyme for a messenger bag for me, and Anna Marie Horner oh how I love thee.

Sorry, I can’t decide, does that disqualify me?

  30. Trina Dart responds:
    Posted: December 17th, 2009 at 11:54 pm →

Too hard to decide! I love them all…. but if I have to decide… I would choose LIttle Folks!
And I would make something lovely for my daughter… like an apron or skirt!

  31. Jo responds:

  47. Corky responds:
    Posted: December 18th, 2009 at 12:26 am →

I love the Wild Thyme!! I got some of the birds and flowers print and made a Travel Tray for my friend, used a solid turquoise on the inside, it is so cute I want to make a bunch more for all my family and friends who travel. Do you know what travel trays are? They are a little square of fabric that you put velcro or snaps on the corners so they make into a ‘tray’. They are so handy to use in hotel rooms to put your keys in, your glasses, jewelry, whatever you don’t want to lose on those colorful bedspreads (hence the solid inside cover) I didn’t get a picture of my first one, but as I make more I will show them on my blog – watch for them later this next week at PiecefulDays.SquareSpace.com

All of it’s great, but I think the Gee’s Bend solids would make a great applique quilt. I love the look of piecing plus applique, and I think the solids would carry that off nicely as a background for the applique.

  58. Michelle responds:
    Posted: December 18th, 2009 at 12:46 am →

How funny, just realized that these first four comments picked four different fabric collections! :0) Just goes to show, you’ve got something for everyone!

Oooh, what a fantastic giveaway. Dolce is my favourite – I think I’d make kitcheny things – more oven gloves, a new plastic bag holder or a covered noticeboard for postcards and receipts.

The colours are so pretty, but elegant. Yum.

    Wishing you a lovely pre-Christmas week – it’s snowing here. x

I *love* the wild thyme! I’d likely incorporate it into the *shhhh* quilt I’m going to make for my sister and her fiance. I’ll be getting started on that as soon as the holidays are over.

  113. Kym responds:

Those prints are all so good! My pick would be the Little Folks Voile, namely the Forest Hills print because I’ve got deer on the brain at the moment. Can I be selfish and say, after all the christmas gift crafting I’ve been doing, I’d use it to make a summer top for myself??

  114. Junglewife responds:

Oh, I love the Wild Thyme bird print. (i tired to buy some last week, but was having internet problems). But the 23 fat quarters of solids would be nice too. In fact any of them. I’m not fussy. :-) Happy Holidays

Make a choice!?!?! Aaaaak … hmmm … I think I would go for the Wild Thyme and make myself a zingy quilt. No. Wait. I would go for the Gee’s Bend solids and make a real old school quilt. No. Hang on. Wild Thyme. Umm …. Gee’s Bend….oh.. oh.. oh.. it is all too much fabulous choice!

(In the end I think it would have to be Wild Thyme because I am a sucker for graphics over solids.)

I so love the Little Folks fabric, and can’t wait toget my hands on some. I’m really interested in seeing how it drapes — I’m thinking if it’s as awesome as people have described, that I might try turning some of it into a skirt for me!

  126. Anna responds:

I like the Dolce fabric (especially the Elle Ice and Marilyn Grey). I’m a quilter, and usually have a few bazillion quilt ideas floating around in my brain, especially since I started sewing for Quilts of Valour about a year ago … a wonderful excuse to make more quilts! (there’s only so many quilts I can use in my own home, sadly)

So difficult to choose between and so many ideas! Love the Little Folks Voile – possibly a dress or smock for my daughter. But then again the Dolce inspires me to make her a little quilt. I love the mixture of pink, turquoise and orange.

  132. Shannon responds:
    Posted: December 18th, 2009 at 4:09 am →

The Dolce line is just beautiful. I would love to make a quilt using fabric from this line to show off it’s beauty. With a yard, depending on the print, I think I’d try a handbag.

    Thanks for the giveaway! :)

  133. Eva responds:

Wild theme is just perfect! I renovate old furniture found in trash in my free time, and then give them away to people that can’t afford to buy new ones, so I always look for cheap raw materials as I gain no profit from this! I happen to have two chairs that need their fabrics changed and with these one they’ll be very cute! That’s what I would do with those fabrics!

  134. Jill Neely responds:
    Posted: December 18th, 2009 at 4:13 am →

I would just love the “Wild Thyme” fat quarter pack. I would love to make a bunch of Maggies from Lazy Girl’s new pattern.

  135. Andi responds:
    Posted: December 18th, 2009 at 4:13 am →

I would be happy with all of those choices! But if I have to pick one, the Wild Thyme collection would make a really fun quilt, I love the bright colours and the birds and florals! But the solids would be great too, as I am always looking for solids for quilting projects and never seem to have the colour I need in my stash – or I could make a quilt of all solids, which I have never attempted before!

Super hard choice but it has to be Wild Thyme. I’d make some boxy pouches or maybe coasters or place mats.

I love the patterns & colors in both Dolce & Wild Thyme – too hard to choose! I will be starting a quilt soon for a family member, and fabric from either one of those would be just what I need to get started.

  325. Dixie responds:
    Posted: December 18th, 2009 at 7:10 am →

Dolce’s Lana Pink is my fave for napkins, then some Ella Orange for coasters to go with.

  326. Nadia responds:
    Posted: December 18th, 2009 at 7:10 am →

Oh, the Anna Maria Horner voile is so pretty, I feel like eating it! It’s perfect for a dress, but with a yard (if I won it) I’d make a camisole top for summer sleeping.

  327. Becky responds:
    Posted: December 18th, 2009 at 7:10 am →

I Love the Gee Bend Solids.
There are so many things I could make with a fat quarter pack. I’ve been wanting to try your fat quarter handbag tutorial

  328. Jennifer responds:
    Posted: December 18th, 2009 at 7:10 am →

Hmmm, I love them all but if I have to pick one it would be Wild Thyme. Great fabric, great name.

  329. Linda responds:
    Posted: December 18th, 2009 at 7:11 am →

My practice choice would be the pretty Wild Thyme to make a quilt for my daughter who loves these colors.

My ‘just for me’ choice would be the Gee’s Bend Solids. I would seriously need to hold them and play with them before I could make anything with them. They are just beautiful as is!

  330. Karen H responds:

  336. Charlotte responds:

I love them all! But I just ordered a bunch of Anna Maria Horner (couldn’t wait, plus it’s my birthday), so I think my next favorite is the Dolce (I’m always a sucker for birds).

  337. Connie responds:

I think Little Folks Voile would make a super cute sun dress for my daughter….Wild Thyme would be smashing in a handbag for me!

  338. Holly responds:
    Posted: December 18th, 2009 at 7:19 am →

i think my favorite is the AMH voiles, but I would be too scared to cut into it, that means that I would pick Wild Thyme- that would make great little cocktail napkins, or patchwork edging for some curtains I have been dreaming up.

  339. Sarah responds:

  345. Patty responds:

The Little Folks voile from Anna Maria Horner is definitely the one I’d like to win! Gavin’s Wild Thyme has captivated me! I would like to make one of Amy Butler’s quilted handbags with assorted fat quarters of these designs…although I’d love a skirt from the Chick Dot Brown fabric. It is fun!

Oh they are all fantastic fabrics, but I think I would get the most use out of the “Quilts of Gee’s Bend solids. I have read the history of these gals and was fastenated with the creativity with simple fabrics. These fabrics would be a wonderful addition to my collection of fabrics. They would most likely be made into a quilt or two.

  355. Johanna responds:
    Posted: December 18th, 2009 at 7:29 am →

Oh, they are all so beautiful, but I’m probably most attracted to those scrumptious oranges and pinks in Dolce. I’d probably make cloth napkins, coin purses, or clutches with them, or perhaps I’d have to simply frame them because they are like amazing art just as they are.

I’m new to quilting, but loving it, and I’d make my first one for my very own self, pieced on both sides, and HUGE so I could cuddle up under it and read a book. Or surf the ‘net. Or just hang out and stare at it in happy swoony love.

Aside from the actual technique, I’m really nervous about trying to mix and match patterns myself to create something cohesive and not crazy; colorful and full of pattern without causing retinal damage. These prints are beautiful!

WOW! Either the Wild Thyme or the Solids fat quarters would be wonderful — I have several rice-filled heating packs I’d like to make, and a few baby toys (Heather Bailey’s Happy Stacker, and some beach ball-type grabbing toys), and either of those would be fantastic.

Serendipity brought me to SMS during stash busters month and I have visited everyday since. More importantly, I have been inspired to start sewing again, after many years of letting my sewing machine gather dust and have made, to give as gifts, 4 stash busting quilts, about 60 criss-cross coasters and half a dozen grocery totes, all inspired from the wonderfully creative people who contribute to this site. I’d love to make a whirligig quilt top with the Carolyn Gavin fabrics – I might even give the finished article to my son whose name is Gavin!

I love the Wild Thyme set. I’ve come back to sewing since losing my premature son at the end of May. I’ve been making tiny clothes for preemies and micro-preemies to donate to the hospital that took such good care of me. They gave me clothes to dress my son and bury him in, and I’m forever grateful. I remember wishing they had some more attractive options than pastel crochet, and so I have been looking for other patterns and colors to use in my projects. The Wild Thyme set is whimsical, could be used for a girl or boy, and even as fat quarters, would be big enough to make different onesies, nighties, and tiny pants and tops. And I suppose I could learn how to make some blankets, too :)

A dear friend over at The Handmade Dress says that every Momma should have a “nest”- a comfy chair, lamp, and basket of sewing to escape to in the evening. I have been working on a handmade Christmas (gifts and tree decorations) and it seems absurd now- but I think a nice lap quilt for myself sounds like a hearty indulgence! ;O)

The Wild Thyme is awfully cute, but I could really use some solids in my quilting stash right now–and I see a couple of shades in that last offering that will work for a quilt I’m going to be making for my daughter’s room.
