This pattern lets you make a tunic to wear as a dress or over jeans, or make a shirt. The Schoolhouse Tunic features front and back pleats, 3/4 -length sleeves with optional elastic gathering at the cuff, and an open bodice perfect for layering over your favorite camisole or tank.” | |||
| Materials | |||
| I used a light weight cotton (it was from a bed sheet from Urban Outfitters) But I think any quilter’s cotton, lightweight cotton, or even linen would all work beautifully. If you opt for the elastic cuffs than you will also need 1/4 inch elastic. | |||
| Fabric Recommendations | |||
| I would recommend something that drapes nicely. Light weight cotton, high quality quilter’s cotton, or linen. | |||

| I thought it was super cute in the picture and I was very pleased when I got mine finished because I love it on me too! And I love that you could make it into a tunic length or shirt length, I could see myself making different versions of this.

| The written instructions were very clear and easy to follow which was great because to be honest, I am really not a pattern person. I was pleasantly surprised! |

| The pattern pieces were on tissue and they had sizes 2-20 on them. This always makes me nervous because I am too lazy to transfer the pattern to other pattern paper, so I just figure out my size and cut it out and hope that it fits, in this case it fit perfectly! |

| I thought this was a pretty simple pattern, I would say it is for a beginner.

| I followed the pattern. The only thing I found was that it tells you to gather the sleeves and it didn’t need any gathering to make it match up to the bodice. | |||

| I was very pleased with this pattern. It was simple and fun to make and I love the end product, I can see myself making more of these in the future. And this is coming from a person that doesn’t make many things from a pattern because they usually frustrate me, but this one did not! | |||

How does the sizing run? I’m at the top end of the size curve, and would *love* to get this one, but haven’t been able to find any information on how the sizing for this pattern runs.

I am totally a pattern person. I can make a few alterations/changes but am completely jealous of those of you who sew clothing with out a pattern!!!!!!

I made two of these beauties. One with a linen-cotton blend and one with a very light cotton. The later was a bit too soft at the front, so the two sides wouldn’t “stay together”. It doesn’t matter and is still my favourite piece at the moment.

I think this pattern is really cute and I am interested in trying it. However, I am a buxom size 16/18 and I am concerned that it would look like a big box on me. Has anyone tried this on a larger person? Amy’s version is very cute, but she is definitely much smaller than me
I am an experienced seamstress and could easily adjust the pattern with darts, etc. but I am not sure it is worth the $15 and time…. Thoughts anyone?
Seriously, thank you so much for doing a review on this pattern! I really wanted to try it but I haven’t yet ventured into making clothes in anything bigger then 2T. Although I’m not a total beginner I’m no expert either and wanted to make sure I wouldn’t be totally over my head if I attempted this pattern. I’m now convinced it is well within my skill level and just ordered it and some fabric last night! Thanks again for helping me take the leap and keep the great pattern reviews coming!

I’ve been wanting that pattern since it was released last fall! I love how yours turned out; that bedsheet fabric is adorable! Now I’m off to add the Schoolhouse Tunic pattern to my birthday list!

I’ve been thinking about making this as I am 6 months pregnant and I think it would make a cute looking maternity shirt! Do you think it would be possible to make the top half of the shirt in my normal size and then cut the bottom half of the shirt out from a bit bigger size (to accomodate my belly)? Either way, yours turned out adorable!

The sizing question: For me,the top of the shirt is probably right on, the bottom, at least for me and my measurements was a little big, if I had used my actual measurements for the bottom, I would have been one size up, but then the top would have been big. So I just went with the size that fit me up top and I think it worked out perfect. Hope that makes sense. I have a smaller chest and some nice hips from having three babies

As for a Maternity shirt, I think it would work fine, you would just have to adjust for the extra fabric by maybe making the pleats bigger, or adding more pleats.

I love this tunic, but have had some of the same concerns about sizing. Is it only cute on skinny girls? I am afraid it will look like maternity wear on me. Also, I like dresses that come to the knee. What do you think? Would this look cute that long, worn with some leggings or tights?
Ah! I love the fabric. I just ribbed my favorite tunic and have been looking for a pattern to try my hand at making a replacement.
I have this pattern at home, too – now I can’t wait to dig in and give it a shot!

I made this pattern using the measurements I took, and it was a muu muu on me. I scaled it back and it still fits a little big on me. I’m on the bigger side of the sizes, and it’s lofty on me. I still like it. The pattern’s super easy, so hopefully I can learn how to alter it to fit.
I also left the sleeves off and did it sleeveless. In Texas, that helps me take this into the summer.
I did this tunic as well and really enjoyed making it. I reviewed the pattern on my blog. I shortened it as I’m petite, so it’s not as long as the above review. I really recommend this pattern.

I made this last week and thought I’d toss my two cents in- I loved the directions on the pattern. They were succinct, easy to follow and worked really well for a pseudo-beginner.. I LOVE the look of the tunic. I am one of the overly-gifted sect and had to add a few inches to accomodate my bust.

Sorry, haven’t been back to the blog in a while. I scanned the pattern and increased its width as well as length.
I am a beginner to advanced beginner – I easily made this tunic. The directions were very clear and I had no trouble in any part of the design. I found it ran pretty true to size. I also did not gather the sleeves and they matched up perfectly. Highly recommend for anyone to try – there is also a link to a ruffle tutorial on http://www.sewliberated.com so you can add one if you like. Next time I will try a shorter one to wear with jeans!
