Free Fabric Friday

First up:  Did you know about our $5 shipping?  All US orders no matter how large.   No need for a coupon or a code.  Postal rates went up, but our prices went down.

Next up: You might have noticed it’s been quiet here on the SMS blog.  Trust me, it only means we’re working feverishly in the background.  We’re getting ready for our February theme, True Love, which actually starts on Monday!  (No, Silly, not February–just the theme.)  We also have several other exciting little things that will be popping up in the next couple of weeks, including a great pattern review and information about meeting up with other sewists in your neighborhood.

We’ve been busy in the shop too.  Fabulous new products have been arriving all month:

Four New Quilt Patterns by Denyse Schmidt

Denyse Schmidt has produced some fantastic, fun, approachable quilt patterns.  Of course they’d all look great with Hope Valley prints, but the possibilities are endless.  (You have to take a look at the Proverbial Quilt–it comes with an alphabet!)  We’ll give away one pattern.

Snorkel by Cosmo Cricket

Following up on the very popular Girl Friday collection, Cosmo Cricket has created another youthful, vibrant group, Snorkel.  The beach theme is happy and festive.  We’ll give away one yard to two people.

Japanese Imports from Yuwa/Kei

We received a variety of fantastic pieces from the Japanese company Yuwa/Kei.  A few novelties, an adorable linen, and lots of the hard-to-find stash essential, Honeycomb.  We’ll give away one yard of Honeycomb.

Isabelle by Anna Griffin

Isabelle, by Anna Griffin, is a gorgeous group of coordinating motifs.  Stick with one of the three colorways, or mix-and-match–it all looks great!  (These prints are a smaller scale than you might think.  Be sure to click through to the product pages to see the fabric with rulers.)  We’ll give away one yard to two people.

Little Folks Dobby by Anna Maria Horner

We have a handful of dobby dot prints from Anna Maria’s Little Folks Dobby collection, which coordinate with the Little Folks Voile.  They are a lightweight cotton, with a raised dots throughout the cloth–very retro and cool.  We’ll give away one yard of Dobby.

Vera’s Garden from Robert Kaufman

These bright and beautiful Vera’s Garden prints from Kaufman were inspired by vintage Vera designs.  Like a Vera scarf, these fabrics  make a statement. We’ll give away one yard to two people.

Free Fabric (and a pattern!)

Did you add it up?  That’s right, nine winners today!  Comment below and tell us which of the above you’d most like to win and what you’d make.  We’ll announce the winners on Monday.

Haitian Relief Efforts

All of us are deeply saddened by the crisis in Haiti.   From what we understand, only life-saving supplies are being shipped to Haiti at the moment.  The time will come, however, when they’ll need get-on-with-your-life supplies–clothing, blankets, fabric and more.  We’ll be watching and waiting for opportunities to send these types of things. In the meantime, there are many, many worthy charities that could use your monetary contributions. We also wanted to make sure you know about an opportunity to raise money through your craft.  Craft Hope is organizing an Etsy shop to raise funds for Doctors Without Borders.  Click on over to the Craft Hope site for all the details.

    Happy sewing to everyone

What lovely fabric, you really have spoiled us for choice! I’d have to say the Isabelle fabric, as I’ve had my eye on it for awhile (even before it hit the shops). Not only is it really pretty, but it also shares its name with my gorgeous 9 year old daughter. Yes, I have my very own Isabelle, and I think it would be fabulous to make her a quilt with Isabelle fabric.

If I’m the lucky winner I’d love something in the pink/orange colour way.

    Thanks,
    Kelly :-)

Oh Golly, how to choose. We’ll okay – I love the Anna Maria Horner fabrics – love everything about her. And those new linens look beautiful – I never have enough spots and stripes and simple colours in my stash, so that would be a good addition. But I think most of all (and surprising to me that this is my number 1 choice) is the Kaufman floral prints. I really like Hazy Days Spring, Lazy Days Spring and Vintage pillow case.
So – what would I make…. I think I’d finally make something just for me (and no-one else). A sweet little top from my new book would be perfect. (And the book is “One Yard Wonders”, so I know that one yard of any of those fabrics would be just the right size and I wouldn’t have to share with anyone else).
    Thank you.

I think the sub spray, fish spray, and beach ball spray would make very cute summer clothes for my two year old. But I also LOVE Japanese fabric. I often get it and decide later what to do with it. Normally is something for my living room. Vera’s Garden is nice too. I love Mums and Daisies. You really shouldn’t tease me like this.

My favorite fabric is the Floral Medallion Blue from the Isabelle Collection by Anna Griffin. I would use it to line and embellish a laptop sleeve I am knitting and felting for my 15 year old daughter. She has a penchant for small prints and this would look great with the yarn I am using.
All the fabric collections are beautiful.

And if I were the lucky winner of free fabric, I would race to grab the Little Folks Dobby, hesitating only in choosing between the colors. While I love the detailed designs of the other collections, and typically love Anna Maria Horner’s prints in particular, the simplicity of this design and the texture add up to a stunner. I’d want to make something with very few lines, like a squarish blouse or even a scarf, to showcase the design of the fabric.

I was just looking at the Snorkel collection earlier this week trying to find an excuse to buy some (I promised my husband I wouldn’t buy any more fabric until I started using some of what I already have or unless I have a specific project in mind). I’m new to quilting and I’ve become obsessed with fabric and trying to come up with my own quilt designs. We have a little niece who has been having a lot of medical problems and I’m sure she needs a new quilt made out of that material. =)

Oh I absolutely love the snorkel prints! As a mom to a boy, it is so hard to find boy-ish prints but the Subs-Mist and Fish-Spray are absolutely perfectly boy-ish! I think I would make my son a new laundry bag with one of those if I won. The laundry bag he had broke (store-bought, figures) and we’ve been throwing his dirty clothes in the corner for longer than I care to admit :) I swear, one of these days I’m destined to win this! HAHA!

I would love to win anything from the Isabelle line by Anna Griffin. I would love to make myself a new purse with it! I will say though it was really hard to pick just one!

  391. Jennifer responds:

I’m nuts over the snorkel collection! LOVE those whales! I would have to make a little beach-comber button-down shirt for my little nephew.
But I also love the Isabelle collection. I have friends with a 2-year old little girl who has just been diagnosed with Leukemia. Her name is Isabelle and these fabrics remind me of her! They are cheery & happy & beautiful, just like her. That would have to become a cute little sundress for her!
    Gorgeous stuff, you guys!

  402. Kelly responds:

What great fabrics! I’m having trouble deciding which I like the best! It’s either the Lace Swirls Blue (Isabella) as a skirt, or the Little Honey Berry (Little Folks Voile) as a hat. For either I’ll have to add/buy a fraction of a yd too, but *so* worth it! If I really must pick, I’ll choose the Little Honey Berry since it’s just so cheery and bright!

  403. Margie Bennett responds:

I would love to make her a quilt and a yard of ‘Isabelle’ would get me started. A pretty girl deserves a pretty quilt to snuggle in don’t ya think??!

do we have to pick just one??? these are all so great! i guess i would go with The Proverbial Quilt Pattern ~ Denyse Schmidt Sewing Pattern and make a quilt for both of my children, using different fabrics to suit their taste. Depending on the letters, i might use specific ones and create a personalized saying for each of them. that would be fun:) thank you for the chance to win one of these great products!

What a fabulous Friday! I’d be thrilled to have any of the fabric choices, but Onnanoko would have to be my #1 pick. Since visiting Japan last year, I’ve fallen in love with all things Asian (even sushi). I think I would use the bulk of the fabric as a skirt overlay for a dress, but I might trim the decorative bits at the top to use on the bodice– somehow.

Definitely Anna Maria Horner, I have been holding myself back from spending our grocery money on a huge stack of it for summer dresses and skirts for my girls (and maybe for myself too!).

I LOVE snorkel!! I just got the book “One Yard Wonders” for Christmas. There’s a laundry bag pattern in there that I would LOVE to see hanging from the back of my son’s nursery door. A snorkel bag would make getting the laundry done a cheery chore. =)

  589. Krista responds:
    Posted: January 15th, 2010 at 10:42 am →

I could probably find something do to with all of them. However, I’d have to pick Snorkle. I’ve been wanting to do a quilted wall hanging with some applique for my children’s bathroom. This fabric would also be perfect to add a tiny bit of flair to a simple linen bag pattern I’ve been working on! Wish me luck!

I’m so glad to hear about February’s theme! I am very much looking forward to it. Sounds awesome.

As for the prizes, it is really tough to choose. I love the look of the honeycomb fabric, but I also love the Isabella line. I would use whatever I won to make a sewing machine cover. I despterately need to make myself one, but all my other fabrics in my stash are currently “promised” to other projects!

I encourage everyone to visit Craft Hope, or SouleMama, or NPR, for some suggestions about ways to help. Blessings…

Snorkel and Isabelle are my favorites. I would love to make a shirt and snuggle quilt for my youngest boy out of the Snorkel. And, I would love a lap quilt just for me (in a house of dudes) just for me out of the Isabelle … love anything Denyse (Proverbial and Hills & Hollers are my favs there). They way you have them laid out they look like a fabulous deck of cards. So, ATCs for my art quilting friends, too. And, a backpack for my and my little guy … and, … and, … and, ….

Just picking one, though, hmmmmm … that’s difficult … They are all lovely. I’m more in a Snorkel mood today. So, I will go with that one.

I love the Snorkel collection. I will probably make some fancy-smancy tote bags as the handles are wearing out of my summer berries one. I will have to look out for that collection since I noticed the bathroom shower curtain is ripping out the holes for the hooks (yes, I know it takes more than one yard. Darn!)

I so do not need any more fabric, but I can already see my kids in outfits with snorkel by Cosmo Cricket. A sundress out of umbrella spray, a shirt/pants combo out of beach blanket mist. Some fun jammies out of subs mist. And a few headbands for me out of the different bubbles. Mmhhmm…summer, where are you?

My mom just gifted me with her sewing machine and a lesson to get me started for the holidays. I have been making small baskets and bags so far. I would love to make my mom a thank you gift of a set of collapsible fabric boxes that she can use when traveling in her RV and think of me back at home missing her. I think the Japanese Imports from Yuwa/Kei would be just perfect for this purpose.

Oh my goodness you have no idea how excited I was to see the snorkel collection!! I have been a HUGE scrapbook for years and last summer when that paper collection came out I wanted it SO bad! I was busy with my son and being 8 months pregnant that by the time I got around to going to my LSS it was all gone =(

Oh I was so sad!! Now here it is! Like it was meant to be! If I could actually win this thing I would want more than anything to have a peice of Cosmo Cricut’s Snorkel fabric! Seriously I wish I could win a yard of each print! Boy would my family benifit from such an extatic mom!

Anyway you can see how VERY excited I am!! You asked what I’d do with it…well being a seemstress, quilter and scrapbooker let’s just say the possibilities are endless!! My first instinct was a funtabulous quilt!! And with a little decopauge, some chipboard and my cricut the scraps would make an amazing mini album probably better than the one I originally would have made!!

    PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE pick me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

OK. Snorkel is just perfect! Youthful and fun. I have two kids who are splitting up as roommates later this year – one boy and one girl – and I can see making some pretty cool pillow cases and drapes from the snorkel. A duvet cover would be cool too. And…spotting the turquoise and red dots, I can see some Christmas projects coming out of it too. I am really really tired of flowers right now, and so the snorkel is awesome. :)

As for fabric, I think my vote goes for the dobby fabric. Just because I love a new-to-me silly sounding word. Plus I’m on a clothes making mission at the moment, and it sounds like the perfect fabric for summer tops.

I will have to say “Snorkel by Cosmo Cricket” to make stuff for boys. We just seem to have a lot of girly fabric colors and prints. Our group does donated quilts and it would be good to have something a little more masculine :) Of course all of them would be great! heehee
