November 30 ~ Write It & Wrap It

With all of this year’s Handmade Holiday gift ideas we’re sure you could also use some inspiration as you Write It & Wrap It!

One more thing: Don’t worry… The fun (and prizes & more) will continue through December! Have you signed up for Give-Away Day and Holidays at Home?

A gift for you: Enjoy our unique printable gift tags. Download the free PDF, print on card stock or heavy paper, cut and enjoy!

Make It

spacer Patchwork Cards
You can use fabric to create holiday cards with the Patchwork Card Tutorial from Craft Apple.
spacer Paper Stars
You’ll want to embellish packages, cards, the tree, a garland… Once you start making Paper Stars from Curbly you won’t want to stop!
spacer Furoshiki
We love fabric, of course, and we like the idea of limiting our use of gift wrap a bit this holiday season. Print these fantastic PDF How to use Furoshiki diagrams from the Japanese government, and wrap with fabric!
spacer Paper Toys
We know first-hand that kids love Paper Toys from The Toymaker. A small set would make a great gift, or the toys could be a nice way to buy a little time as you write and wrap (occupy those excited, little fingers!).
spacer Gift Tags Galore
Cassie from Bella Dia offers a wonderful resource with her Free Gift Tag Round-Up from 2007. It includes our printable PDF gift tags from from last year (pictured!).

Note: We edited this post after publishing to remove a pop-up tree card tutorial. It was brought to our attention that the original designer was not noted in the tutorial, and at this time we are not able to contact the original designer to request permission to include his work. Sorry for the inconvenience!

Don’t miss these related items from the SMS archives: Fabric Boxes, Embellish! & Drawstring Bags (perfect for “wrapping”).

Here are just a handful of fabrics we love for some of these projects. Click on the fabric images to visit the Sew,Mama,Sew! shop:

spacer Custom Holiday Rubber Stamps from Sweet Papery
Buy your Custom Holiday Rubber Stamps from Sweet Papery for great designs and super-efficient holiday cards!

Mix It

spacer Molasses Crinkles
Give yourself a wrapping reward with the Thrifty Kitchen Molasses Crinkles Recipe (nibble, then tape, nibble and tie a bow!).

The pop-up Christmas tree is a design from reknowned pop-up artist & children’s book author, Robert Sabuda. The original pattern (and many more) can be found on his website: http://robertsabuda.com/popmakesimple.asp. The Curbly site took it from Wiki-how, which credits Sabuda but Curbly did not include the credit to him. Folks need to be careful about crediting the original designer/artist whenever they copy something to their own sites, as I’m sure all SMS crafters would agree!

I’ve used several of Sabuda’s patterns to make cards for family and friends, and they are always a big hit.

I love to make those moravian stars using ribbon! Sometimes, if the ribbon is too flimsy, I use spray starch and a hot iron to make each fold stay put. They are so pretty, and I love to hang them above the island in my kitchen!

The custom stamp is totally adorable. I have that furoshiki template already printed, and I’ve been using it to wrap gifts. I’m trying to go for 100% fabric (or at least no purchased gift wrap – using wrap that I already own is okay), and the furoshiki is a quick alternative to making drawstring bags.

Thanks so much for these, esp the gift tags! Last year I gave up on commercial gift wrap when I saw how well my daughter’s stamped kraft paper came out. I didn’t want to buy tags this year and now I have a much better solution than names on the scrap of papers!!! Thanks!!!!
