November 21 ~ Holidays at Home

Happy Friday! It’s almost time to really decorate your home in earnest (or have you started already?!). Each Friday we focus on making your home cozy and festive for the holiday season (enjoy our previous Friday posts).

Also: Don’t forget to share your preparations with us, and be sure to check out Giveaway Day!

Make It

spacer Gumdrop Wreath
Alicia from Posie Gets Cozy (have you fallen in love with her new book?!– Wonderful!) shares a Gumdrop Wreath Tutorial, hosted on Kiddley.
spacer Felted Balls
Mason-Dixon Knitting, home of so many brilliant knitting adventures, brings us a Felted Ball Tutorial. It’s a great way to involve (even quite young) kids in a fun, decorating project. Make up the balls, let them dry and then string them into garlands!
spacer Ribbon Wreath
This Ribbon Wreath Tutorial was created for Halloween (hence the black), but we think it would look perfect for the holidays with some beautiful, red ribbon (or sewing scraps?!). Ellen from The Long Thread always has great ideas!
spacer Woodland Ornaments
Meg from elsie marley (and our board) created this Woodland Ornament Tutorial (pine cones, mushrooms & a sprig of holly) series with a PDF pattern download just for you! We’re already planning the fabrics we’ll use for our pine cones.

Don’t miss these related tutorials from the SMS archives: Holidays at Home Week 1, Holidays at Home Week 2 and Fabric Ornaments.

Here are just a handful of fabrics we love for some of these projects. Click on the fabric images to visit the Sew,Mama,Sew! shop:

spacer Felted Wool Christmas Stocking by Betz White
Betz White’s Felted Wool Christmas Stockings sell out fast, so you’ll have to visit her Betz White shop on the 24th for her next update. In the meantime, however, you can snap up her many other felted pieces like beautiful scarves, journals and more.

Mix It

spacer Eggnog
Janelle from Talk of Tomatoes makes her Eggnog Recipe a priority, and you should too (it takes at least three weeks for the flavors to “marry and marinate”)!
spacer Pavlova
Lara, one of our board members, shared one of her Australian family holiday favorites: Pavlova! Find the details in this Pavlova Recipe from Exclusively Food.

French General: Home Sewn — As the founder of the renowned crafts and notions store, French General, Kaari Meng scours the French countryside and Parisian flea markets for vintage treasures. I just checked out this book on a childless evening at the bookstore. Amazing! It’s on my ever-growing wishlist. I have been thinking about gumdrops a lot lately too…could be because they were a favorite childhood treat at G’ma & G’pa’s…or because we just read Hansel & Gretel for the 20th time the other night. Either way, a gumdrop wreath (or mini version) is now on the list of things to do in preparation for the holidays! Thanks!

These are all lovely! I love the nature ideas~ we drilled holes into acorns that were
dry and hung them with ribbon. The kids love them. If you drill very small holes
into the lids and scoop out the “meat” of the acorns then drill small holes on either
side about 1/16th of a inch. then thread the thin ribbon through top then from outer
side of acorn the through center to outer side… then back through the bottom of the
cap. two holes in the cap and two in the acorn… tie it and it is a small fairy pouch for
you to wear around your neck. I made these with a small pom pom on the inner
cap (with hot glue) then added powder glitter. I made sure the cap could still move
up and down the ribbon. I used a small cork that I cut to fit each one and these
were halloween gifts for my daughters friends. But this could be for hollidays or any day!!
I hope that you could understand my directions…. of not post and I will try again,
    Rane
