Elizabeth’s Fabric Focus
Today we’re pleased to introduce Elizabeth’s Fabric Focus. Each month Elizabeth from Oh, Fransson! will share a new project featuring one of our current fabric collections. Elizabeth was a SMS Board Member last spring, and we can’t get enough of her wonderful way with fabrics. You can see Elizabeth’s beautiful quilts, bags and other sewn items on her blog. When you fall in love with her unique designs, you can try out one of her many free tutorials, or you can purchase a PDF pattern in her Etsy shop. (Sorry, her cookies aren’t for sale.)
This month’s focus is Annette Tatum’s House collection; Elizabeth has a free PDF download to share so you can create your own Sawtooth Star block (or a whole quilt?!) with House fabrics.

Have you seen Annette Tatum’s House collection? It’s filled with beautiful pink, aqua and mocha florals in a wide range of sizes. My favorite is Rosa in blue. I’ve always thought there was something delightfully retro about blue roses and this print, with its delicate vines and mocha leaves, reminds me of some of my grandmother’s dishes from the 1950’s. I’m also a fan of pinks and the range in this collection is wonderful – from soft powder puff pink to bright lipstick.
I wanted to make a quilt to show off these floral prints and ended up using a traditional Sawtooth Star block with a white cotton/linen blend for the background.
Because so many of the House prints have white backgrounds, this resulted in a kind of watercolor effect, with parts of many of the stars blending into the white cotton/linen. To add some contrast, I also used natural linen for some of the stars.

If you’ve never made a Sawtooth Star block, I encourage you to give it a try. Even if you’re not going to make a quilt, a single block can make a simple project fabulous. For example, a 6” block and a fun vintage button could be turned into a fancy pincushion. An 8” block could become a potholder and a 12” block would make a great start to a throw pillow.

This is a great idea. I can’t tell you how many times I see a fabric collection and think, “that is so pretty, but what would I make with it.” You chose a great quilter to write the monthly spot too. I love Oh Fransson! for eye candy and inspiration.

what a lovely quilt. i love the spring colors as well as the pattern. i wish i could get over my fear of quilting. it’s the one craft that i have never attempted. one day this blog will give me the gusto to get past my quilt block.
